Nowadays intermodal transport is the foundation of international trade. In contrast to traditional transport, this transport seeks to combine various services and resources, thus contributing to the improvement of the entire distribution process. The basis of the interchangeable method for limiting the consequences of road transport is, as far as possible, intermodal transport. However, it should be noted that the implementation of the described system requires not only direct connection of each branch of transport, excellent knowledge of strengths and shortcomings, but also proposing more effective financial solutions and a better level of services. It is important that intermodal transport may play an important role in the exploitation of trade, as well as transit transport through Poland. In 2016, 35 active terminals were located in Poland: 28 of them are road terminals that served rail - road, while 7 other terminals were sea terminals that served sea - road and sea - rail.

This papers aim is to focus on the specifications of the intermodal services in Slovakia (partly also in the Czech Republic and Austria) as representative of Central Europe as well as on the existing and potential clients of intermodal transport through the region of Southeast Europe. The analysed market has enough potential to offer intermodal services. Currently, the competitive situation compared to road transport is very unsatisfactory. Yet, it is hardly possible to realize a good revenue situation with intermodal transports. Nevertheless, the paper identifies three areas in question where potential was analysed by doing literature researches as well as using expert opinions. New intermodal services from the Adriatic port to Slovakia as well as between between Central Europe (Slovakia) and the southern CIS counties, e.g. Russia have been identified. In addition, new intermodal services into the direction of Romania and respectively Turkey show enough potential to establish several strategies to enhance the transport level within the whole corridor. Especially Turkey is characterized as "chance" for the area in question.

The purpose of this paper is to present intermodal transport as a part of the companies' supply chain in which rail transport is not a necessity but a value added element. The European Commission stated in its current "White Paper" as follows: "Railway is sometimes seen, particularly as far as freight transport is concerned, as an unattractive means of transport. However, certain examples of some Member States have shown that railway can offer high quality transport services". In fact, rail freight transport has undergone a large transformation in recent years. A growing number of shippers and forwarders have discovered rail transport as an economically viable and environmentally friendly alternative to road transport for the movement of cargoes.

The study presents the analysis of the possibility of increasing the share of rail transport in the carriage of goods through the development of intermodal transport. The inspiration for discussion were the records of the transport White Paper of 2011, in which it was assumed that by 2030, 30 % of freight carried by road at a distance of over 300 km, will be transferred to the more environmentally friendly modes of transport, especially rail, inland waterways and maritime transport. The paper presents basic data on rail freight in Poland. Particular attention was paid to data on intermodal transport. It presents the basic advantages and disadvantages of rail transport. The main aim of this article was to show that there are possibilities of increasing the share of rail transport in the carriage of goods. For this purpose, an efficient modernization of railway lines and terminals, among other things, must be ensured in order to reduce transport time and handling. It should put systems in place to monitor traffic and track shipments in real time. Increasing the share of rail transport in the carriage of goods would be aimed primarily at relieving road transport, whose negative consequences for the environment and for human life and health are much higher than rail transport.

A modern world’s transportation system in the global economy shows a high level of complexity of networks and transport processes. The division between the stages of carriage by modes of transport is often blurred, and delivery process itself increasingly involved more than one of its modes. Therefore, there are many different concepts and definitions that attempt to capture what is changing and relates to the transport sector. With this article we try to systematize concepts operating in the field of multimodal transport and propose a reasoned one, common definition of intermodal transport as such a concept, which is able to extend to all transport processes consist of at least two transport modes with supporting of unitized cargo.

Paper presents analysis of intermodal rail transport in selected loading units. The brief description of the loading units is presented. The volume of intermodal rail transport of load units in European countries in 2021 is shown, taking into account mass of transported goods, transport performance and average transport distance. Goods in the intermodal transport are carried out in container, swap bodies, semi-trailers and road sets. The most frequently used loading unit is the container. Semi-trailers is the most often used loading unit in road freight transport. However, semitrailers are rarely used in intermodal transport in most European countries. In the case of Poland, the share of intermodal transport of containers and swap bodies by rail constitutes a significant share in the European market, however, the transport of semi-trailers and road sets is still a rather unpopular form of transport compared to other European countries.

Efficient transport solutions are based on multimodal systems, with the dominant role of rail and road transport in land versions of the systems and the connecting and directing part of intermodal terminals, transhipment terminals or warehouse centres. The implementation of transport processes is always associated with the risk of lack of timeliness (quality) or threats to people, equipment and cargo (safety) resulting from human, technical, organizational and global factors like pandemics or war. The article contains a risk mapping method in multimodal transport systems configured to estimate the risk of lowering the quality of logistics services (on-time deliveries, etc.). The method combines factors usually considered separately in studies on individual modes of transport. A formal notation of risk factors as a mathematical model was proposed, and a case study was provided to picture the implementation.

The dynamic development of car transport caused that there are more and more nuisance problems associated with this mode of transport and therefore the ways for solving them are in demand in Poland. Transport system which links the various branches of transport, creating a coherent transport chains is rail and intermodal transport. Supporting the growing importance of rail and intermodal transport is primarily aimed at reducing transport costs by improving its organization and using the most effective means of transport at each stage. Moreover, on the one hand, the basic advantages of intermodality are associated with the use of the most effective modes of transport, and on the other hand, intermodality requires the standardization of products carriage in the form of railway transhipment terminals. As a result, intermodal transport facilitates the management of supply chains, generating significant positive external effects, such as reducing the reliance on the most environmentally harmful road transport or reducing time and handling costs.

The main objective of the text is to try to carry out the analysis with the predominant objective to try and present in realistic way the factors influencing the choice between a service realised only with the use of a road transport and intermodal transport. The author of the analysis put particular stress on the costs of the carriage service, time of its realisation and CO2 emission. The analysis also aimed at showing which of the presented technologies of service providing is more friendly to natural environment. This is due to the fact that the market for intermodal transport and road transport in Poland, knowledge of the mechanisms of price formation and the costs are still low. It is often difficult to determine the unit price of transport modes or mechanisms of shaping them. This results primarily from difficulties with the calculation of the actual cost of transport, terminal operations, management and other issues occurring in road transport and intermodal logistics functions.

Increasing demand for transport of goods exerts negative influence on the environment. Therefore most European countries divide realization of transportation of commodities between various transport branches by using so-called intermodal transport. Therefore it seems reasonable to carry out an analysis with the predominant objective to try and present in realistic way the factors influencing the choice between a service realized only with the use of a road transport and intermodal transport. The author of the analysis put particular stress on the costs of the carriage service, time of its realization and CO2 emission. The analysis also aimed at showing which of the presented technologies of service providing is more friendly to natural environment. The results obtained from the comparison of intermodal and road transport for a given distance enable stating that effectiveness of railway-road transport is influenced by 22% lower internal costs than the ones of road transport and by lower emission of carbon dioxide.

The article presents the railway entity PKP LHS Sp. z o.o. and its role in the development of the New Silk Road. In consequence, the increase in traffic on the Silk Road with the participation of Polish companies translates into the economic development of the Lublin Province and the development of border crossings in that province. The importance of transport corridors and the participation of PKP LHS in the development of those corridors have been highlighted. Investment assumptions have been presented, the effects of which will be visible in a few years, strengthening the potential and economic capabilities of the province.

W artykule przedstawiono propozycje poprawy stanu infrastruktury liniowej i punktowej wykorzystywanej w kolejowych przewozach intermodalnych. W pierwszej części artykułu przedstawiono stan obecny kolejowych przewozów intermodalnych w Polsce, w tym rozmieszczenie terminali intermodalnych na polskiej sieci kolejowej. Opisano również zakres wsparcia finansowego dla przedsiębiorców działających w obszarze transportu intermodalnego w obecnej perspektywie finansowej (2007-2013). W drugiej części omówione zostały kierunki rozwoju transportu intermodalnego w kolejnych latach. Przedstawiono główne założenia wynikające z projektu Programu Operacyjnego Infrastruktura i Środowisko na lata 2014 – 2020 oraz propozycje nowych inwestycji infrastrukturalnych dla tego segmentu przewozów.
Some proposals of state improvement of the line and point infrastructure used in railway intermodal transport have been given in the paper. The present state of railway intermodal transport in Poland including the location of intermodal terminals in the Polish railway network has been presented in the first part of the paper. The range of finance support for entrepreneurs operating in the area of intermodal transport in present finance perspective (2007-2013) has been discussed. The directions of intermodal transport development in the next few years have been shown in the second part of the paper. The main assumptions resulting from the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment in 2014-2020 and the proposals of the new infrastructural investments for this segment of the transport have been presented.

W artykule przedstawiono analizy dynamicznego wzrostu przewozów intermodalnych w Polsce na tle zaawansowanych technologicznie rynków europejskich i światowych. Autorzy przedstawiają zalety i wady tego rodzaju transportu. Inwestycje terminalowe są bardzo kosztowne, a ich budowa czy też rozbudowa wiąże się z podjęciem ryzyka inwestycyjnego. W opracowaniu zaproponowano i scharakteryzowano model wyliczeń możliwości przeładunkowych terminala intermodalnego dla różnych warunków jego funkcjonowania.
The article shows the analysis of dynamic growth in reference to intermodal transport in Poland against the technologically advanced European and world markets. The authors present the advantages and disadvantages regarding this type of transport. The paper proposes and characterizes a model for calculating intermodal terminal handling possibilities for various conditions of its operation as the terminal investments are very expensive. Their construction and extension is also associated with taking the investment risk.

This article presents the different intermodal transport systems in selected countries in the world, with an indication of their development and impact on environmental protection. The conducted research indicates much faster development of intermodal transport as compared to the transport of goods in other technologies. The studies were based on the latest obtainable statistics on intermodal transport from Asia, Europe, North America, and Australia. In all the cases examined, it is apparent that intermodal transport is supported by state authorities and international intermodal transport associations. The scientific and cognitive value of the article is expressed in the collection of a large number of materials, their systematization and generalization of conclusions. The literature on this subject lacks such comprehensive scientific studies, and this study will therefore clearly fill the research gap.
