    The main objective of the presented analysis was to investigate to what extent even minor changes in the hydrological and hydrogeological environment affect the changes in the dynamics of landslide surface displacement. The research was carried out for selected monitored landslides, which, in addition to the in-depth monitoring devices, were equipped with corner reflectors suitable for satellite radar interferometry measurements. The high temporal resolution of the interferometric data allowed demonstrating the existence of a relationship between the speed of surface movements and slight changes in the depth to the groundwater table. The analyses were performed for five landslides, which also showed a high dependence of these compounds on the geological structure of the landslide and its substrate.

    The paper describes geohazard events that took place in 2020 on the territory of Poland. The PGI is responsible for geohazard monitoring in four areas of interest :landslides and mass movements within the Landslide Counteracting System (LCS, SOPO in Polish), earthquakes within the Geodynamical Monitoring of Poland and ground motions within the Interferometric Terrain Deformations Monitoring of Poland, and coastal monitoring carried out by the Marine Geology Branch within a framework of the 4D Cartography. In 2020, there were no spectacular geohazard events; however, there were some permanently active phenomena, mostly landslides, which caused significant damages to the infrastructure.

    The scope of presented work was to apply the ENVISAT/ASAR data acquired in different alternating polarization modes and under different viewing geometry to characterize Persistent Scatterers (PS) in the context of their scattering mechanism. Persistent Scatterers are explored by SAR interferometry (InSAR) in the Persistent Scatterers Interferometry (PS-InSAR) method. This technique is nowadays one of the most actively developing branches of InSAR. It utilizes coherent natural "radar reflectors" with a consistent reflectivity pattern in time. The PS-InSAR method is the first one to allow the exploration of almost all archived SAR data over a certain area and can retrieve a long-term series of the observations of the individual PS points. Despite this, PS-InSAR used as an operational method of the scattering mechanisms of individual PS is still not fully explored. It is usually not known if the scatterer has specular, dihedral or trihedral geometry and if the reflection comes from one individual strong target or a set of targets located within the resolution cell. Knowledge about scatterer characteristics is very important to separate scatterers representing different deformation regimes: e.g. subsidence, deformations of the construction, soil compaction. This problem becomes crucial if spatial interpolation of the deformation signal is required. A high density of PS is typical for densely urbanized areas (> 100 PS/km²). Urban areas are also ones of the highest interests, in terms of inhabitants’ safety. For purposes of this study, Malbork City in Northern Poland was selected because of its very good coverage of ASAR alternating polarization data acquired under different modes and incidence angles. The specific various ASAR acquisitions have been designed for the purposes of the ESA AO-783 project which was focused on environmental and agricultural classification. A set of Persistent Scatterers has been collected by processing a stack of 55 ERS-1/2 SAR scenes (ESA C1P.3915 project) using Delft University of Technology’s implementation of the PSI method. The 5683 PS points have been obtained that have a coherent behavior. ASAR scenes were calibrated and an analysis of auto-interferogram phase and image amplitudes was performed. Further analysis of the ASAR data is focused on the relationship between incidence angle variations and amplitude, and on the change of polarization. The results were compared with the scattering models of canonical scatterers (specular, dihedral and trihedral). Preliminary results show that applications of variable incidence angle and alternating polarization data are a promising technique regarding scatterer characterization. However, to fully quantitatively analyze the data, precise coregistration is required.
    W artykule przedstawiono próbę wykorzystania danych ENVISAT/ASAR zarejestrowanych w różnych trybach polaryzacji przemiennej i przy różnej geometrii padania wiązki radarowej do scharakteryzowania rozpraszaczy stabilnych (Persistent Scatterers - PS) w kontekście określenia ich mechanizmu odbicia. Rozpraszacze stabilne wykorzystuje się w satelitarnej interferometrii radarowej (InSAR) w tzw. metodzie interferometrii rozpraszaczy stabilnych (Persistent Scatterers SAR Interferometry - PSInSAR). Zagadnienie to jest szczególnie istotne dla określenia charakteru mierzonej metodą PSInSAR deformacji w danym punkcie. Największe skupiska PS (pow. 100 PS/km²) spotyka się na obszarach zabudowanych, gdzie pozwala na to geometria obiektów składająca się z płaszczyzn, materiał, brak rozpraszania objętościowego powodowanego przez roślinność, a także stabilność w czasie. Dla przeprowadzenia omawianych badań wytypowano miasto Malbork z uwagi na niewielkie rozmiary (łatwa identyfikacja obiektów) i dobre pokrycie danymi ASAR w trybach polaryzacji przemiennej uzyskane w projekcie ESA AO-783. Zbiór rozpraszaczy stabilnych dla obszaru Malborka uzyskano metodą PSInSAR na podstawie serii 55 rejestracji ERS-1/2 SAR pozyskanych w ramach projektu ESA C1P.3915. Łącznie wyznaczono 5 683 punkty a następnie przeprowadzono analizę amplitudy i fazy dla wybranych obiektów na obrazach ASAR. Badano zależności fazy auto-interferogramów obrazów AP (alternate polarization) oraz zależności amplitudy od zmiany kąta padania wiązki. Otrzymane wyniki porównano z modelami odbicia fali radarowej od 3 elementarnych typów reflektorów: jednościennych, dwuściennych i trójściennych. Wstępne wnioski potwierdzają przydatność obrazów o polaryzacji przemiennej i różnym kącie padania wiązki do rozpoznawania charakterystyki PS.

    Geological hazards caused by landslides, earthquakes, erosion, land surface deformation and collapse in 2021 in Poland were among the average compared to recent years. They did, however, affect material losses. The Polish Geological Survey (PGS) recorded 41 events related to sudden landslide activations, which damaged or destroyed 17 road sections. Through ongoing monitoring of 72 landslides, 33 were shown to be active. In 2021, more than 5,200 landslides were identified and inventoried in Poland. Geodynamic monitoring performed by PGS recorded 611 seismic events in Poland, whose magnitudes reached M4.2. In addition, using satellite radar interferometry, continuation of land surface deformations was found mainly in mining areas. In 2021, there was a number of collapses of various origins. The paper is a brief report on the ongoing tasks of the Polish Geological Survey in the field of geological hazards and presents events that took place in Poland in 2021.

    Artykuł przedstawia zastosowania teledetekcji satelitarnej (EO) w badaniu osuwisk egzaminując główne przyczyny ruchów osuwiskowych i typy deformacji stoków. Wprowadzono koncepcję pośrednich indykatorów rozpoznawalnych na powierzchni Ziemi i wskazujących na zmiany granicy równowagi stoków. Wpływ tych zmian na współczynnik bezpieczeństwa i na deformacje stoków jest analizowany z uwzględnieniem różnych klas materiałów geotechnicznych. Wyniki są przedstawione syntetycznie w formie tabeli, wskazującej ich zastosowanie do kartowania stopnia zagrożenia osuwiskowego.

    The aim of this study was to evaluate millimeter-scale deformations in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, by using repeated leveling data and the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images of Sentinel-1 satellite mission. The persistent scattered interferometric SAR (PS-InSAR) analysis of images from ascending and descending orbits from June 2016 to November 2021 resulted the line-of-sight (LOS) displacement velocities in the Tallinn city center. Velocity solutions were estimated for the full period of time, but also for shorter periods to monitor deformation changes in yearly basis. The gridded LOS velocity models were used for the decomposition of east-west and vertical velocities. Additionally, the uncertainty of 2D velocity solutions was estimated by following the propagation of uncertainty. The 3D velocity of permanent GNSS station “MUS2” in Tallinn was used to unify the reference of all PS-InSAR velocity solutions. The results of the latest leveling in Tallinn city center in 2007/2008 and 2019 showed rather small subsidence rates which were in agreement with InSAR long-termsolution. However, the short-termInSAR velocity solutions revealed larger subsidence of city center with a rate about –10 mm/yr in 2016–2017, and the uplift around 5 mm/yr in 2018–2019 with relatively stable periods in 2017–2018 and 2019–2021. The inclusion of groundwater level observation data and the geological mapping information into the analysis revealed possible spatiotemporal correlation between the InSAR results and the groundwater level variations over the deep valleys buried under quaternary sediments.

    TanDEM-X jest projektem Niemieckiego Centrum Kosmicznego - DLR(Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt) - zastosowania wysokiej rozdzielczości interferometrii SAR. Otwiera on nową erę w dziedzinie teledetekcji opartej na satelitarnej technologii radarowej. System bazuje na dwóch satelitach: TerraSAR-X i TanDEM-X, poruszających się po bliskich sobie, ściśle kontrolowanych orbitach. Artykuł zawiera krótki opis techniki radarowej i koncepcji misji Tandem-X bazującej na innowacyjnych technologiach. Głównym zadaniem projektu jest wygenerowanie z interferometrycznych obserwacji radarowych globalnego numerycznego modelu wysokości (DEM) z nieosiągalną dotąd dla produktu o globalnym zasięgu dokładnością równą lub lepszą od standardu HRTI-3 (rozdzielczość terenowa 12 m × 12 m, względny błąd wysokości ±2 m w terenie o nachyleniu < 20% oraz ±4 m w terenie o nachyleniu > 20% [8]). Misja zapewnia również platformę badawczą nowych technik obrazowania radarowego i aplikacji.
    TanDEM-X is DLR(Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt) the Earth surface observation project using high-resolution SARinterferometry. It opens a new era in space borne radar remote sensing. The system is based on two satellites: TerraSAR-X (TSX) and TanDEM-X (TDX) flying on the very close, strictly controlled orbits. This paper gives an overview of the radar technology and overview of the TanDEM-X mission concept which is based on several innovative technologies. The primary objective of the mission is to deliver a global digital elevation model (DEM) with an unprecedented accuracy, which is equal to or surpass the HRTI-3 specifications (12 m posting, relative height accuracy ±2 m for slope < 20% and ±4 m for slope > 20% [8]). Beyond that, TanDEM-X provides a highly reconfigurable platform for the demonstration of new radar imaging techniques and applications.

    This paper presents detailed analysis of interferometric maps of subsidence in Upper Silesian Coal Basin. For the period of one year (from October 1997 to October 1998) the subsidence map have been calculated based on leveling observations. For the same period another subsidence map have been processed from Jive ERS SAR interferograms. The comparison of these data shows that the range and extents of subsidence pattern strictly correlates however, there are large differences in amount of subsidence. This research has been carried under European Space Agency project АОЗ-127. The agreement between University of Silesia and Marshal Office of Silesia Province allows performing the analyses towards to integration of interferometric data with regional GIS system of Silesia.

    Landslides – natural disasters be caused by various factors - are frequent in the region surrounding Souk Ahras. Comprehensive fieldwork, such as geotechnical drilling investigations and soil excavations, is conducted to monitor ground movements and assess the feasibility of geological locations. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and other active satellite remote sensors are utilized in Earth Observation-based systems to identify and track ground deformation and landslides in the study area. This research aims to illustrate how open-source processing software, SNAP, provided by the European Space Agency, can be combined with freely available datasets from Copernicus to accomplish this goal. In the North Eastern part of Algeria, which includes Souk Ahras, there is a high risk of landslides Through the use of InSAR technology, the research provided satisfactory results in identifying the morphology of landslides and generating a largescale interferometric map covering several regions in the East of Algeria, revealing the extent of distortion and spacing caused by the landslide phenomenon.

    The paper presents preliminary results of possible application of SAR interferometry in the studies of landslides. Two areas have been selected: Wieliczka and Nowy Sącz. The application of InSAR (SAR Interferometry) in the Carpathians is difficult due to rough topography, vegetation and long season with the snow cover. Such problems may be overridden by applying PSInSAR (Persistent Scatterers SAR Interferometry) which utilizes long time series of the SAR data. PSInSAR was used for both areas. Obtained sets of PS points show evidence of the landslide movement. The most reliable points were then used in quantitative cartographic study to qualify activity of slopes. Analysis of landslide dynamics was performed for the area of Wieliczka where, for instance, a landslide velocity movement in Lednica Górna reaches 74.8 mm/yr. The preliminary results are very promising for the development of PSInSAR methodology in the study of landslides in Poland.

    W artykule autorzy przedstawiono pierwsze spostrzeżenia na temat interferometrycznego przetwarzania danych TerraSAR-X, który jest pierwszym na świecie wysokorozdzielczym satelitą obrazującym w zakresie mikrofal. W opracowaniu zostały użyte dane SAR zarejestrowane w trybie StripMap o rozdzielczości przestrzennej ok. 3.3m. Dane te, obejmujące swym zasięgiem obszar LGOM posłużyły do wygenerowania interferogramu przedstawiającego deformacje terenu wywołane eksploatacją rud miedzi. Z uwagi na wysoką rozdzielczość przestrzenną i małą długość fali nie można było do danych tych wprost zastosować istniejących algorytmów interferometrycznych. Otrzymany interferogram TerraSAR-X charakteryzuje się bardzo dobrą koherencją. Wykazano, że dane radarowe w paśmie X bardzo dobrze nadają się do monitoringu deformacji, a wysoka rozdzielczość umożliwia również śledzenie bardzo drobnych zmian wysokościowych. Wskazano, że czynnikiem znacznie poprawiającym koherencję jest jak wysoka rozdzielczość przestrzenna danych: charakterystyka rozpraszania sygnału jest bowiem częściej zbliżona do odbicia typu powierzchniowego niż tzw. odbicia objętościowego.
    The paper presents preliminary results of interferometric analysis of the high-resolution TerraSAR-X data for a deformation monitoring applications. The interferogram was computed for the Legnica-Głogów Copper Ore Mining Area with a dominant terrain deformation signal. This is the first interferogram of this type computed for any area in Poland. In addition, general characteristics of TerraSAR-X system were reviewed with a particular reference to different SAR acquisition modes and their significance for interferometric applications. Due to its shorter temporal baseline, the TerraSAR-X interferogram shows only a fraction of the deformation detected by Envisat, but the average velocity still remained almost identical, as shown by the selected examples. The comparison of the two SAR systems showed their detectability and measurability to be similar.

    Opis:
    Badania rejonu Zatoki Gdańskiej oraz Półwyspu Sambijskiego prowadzone były w ramach projektu GEO-IN-SAR, którego celem było wykorzystanie najnowocześniejszych osiągnięć satelitarnej interferometrii radarowej (InSAR) do pomiaru zachodzących współcześnie, naturalnych ruchów powierzchni terenu na obszarze Polski i terenach przygranicznych. Dla badań wytypowane zostały trzy poligony badawcze: rejon półwyspu Sambia nawiedzonego przez silne trzęsienie Ziemi we wrześniu 2004 oraz rejon Gdańska i Elbląga. W ramach projektu została przeprowadzona analiza PSInSAR dla scen satelitarnych obejmujących swym zasięgiem rejon półwyspu Sambia i Gdańska, na poligonach badawczych zlokalizowanych w rejonach Kaliningradu, Bałtijska, Gdańska i Elbląga. Do analiz wykorzystano łącznie 117 obrazów z satelitów ERS-1 i ERS-2, na podstawie których wygenerowano odpowiednio 57 interferogramów dla obszaru Gdańska i 60 dla rejonu płw. Sambia. Dla wszystkich poligonów uzyskano zadowalające zagęszczenie rozpraszaczy stabilnych. Wyniki pomiarów deformacji wskazują na istnienie pionowych ruchów terenu o genezie geodynamicznej jak i antropogenicznej.
    Within the framework of the GEO-IN-SAR project, a study was carried out in the Gulf of Gdańsk and on the Sambia Peninsula. The project was aimed at applying the newest achievements in SAR interferometry to measure recent natural terrain vertical movements in Poland and in adjacent areas. Three areas in which substantial movements were expected selected as study sites: Sambia/Gdansk, Wrocław and Podhale, and Sambia Warmia. An additional reason for including the Sambia/Gdansk area was its high seismic activity: on 21 September 2004, the area was affected by a relatively strong (M=4 to 5) earthquake. PSInSAR analysis was completed for the ERS-1/2 SAR scenes (two separate frames) covering the Sambia Peninsula and the Gulf of Gdańsk coast. 117 SAR scenes were used and detailed analyses were performed for the following locations: Gdańsk, Elbląg, Kaliningrad, and Baltijsk. PSInSAR results for all the locations mentioned showed evidence of surface movements. The origin of that deformation might be related to shallow geology and industrial activity (Gdańsk, Elbląg) as well as to seismotectonics (Kaliningrad and Baltijsk).

    Opis:
    W artykule przedstawiono problematykę wykorzystania metod satelitarnej interferometrii radarowej InSAR i jej najnowszej odmiany PSInSAR bazującej na obiektach punktowych tzw. rozpraszaczach stabilnych, do badania współczesnej geodynamiki wybranych obszarów Polski. Scharakteryzowane zostały poligony badawcze „Warmia”, „Podhale” i „Otmuchów”. Omówiono zastosowana metodykę PSInSAR a także problemy związane z przetwarzaniem danych ich analiza oraz interpretacja wyników. Z uwagi na ograniczenia techniczne w ramach projektu analiza PS przeprowadzona została dotychczas jedynie dla wybranych obszarów w ramach poligonów badawczych We wszystkich przypadkach uzyskano zadowalające zagęszczenie rozpraszaczy stabilnych (PS). Otrzymane wyniki pomiarów deformacji są obecnie poddawane wnikliwym analizom. Wstępne analizy wykazały, że w niektórych przypadkach konieczne będzie powtórne generowanie punktów PS dla nieco większego obszaru. Wykazano, _e analizy punktów PS dla celów geodynamicznych nie da się prowadzić w oderwaniu od samej metodyki PSInSAR. Dotychczasowe wyniki pozwalają mieć nadzieje, że dane PSInSAR w istotny sposób przyczynia się do wzbogacenia wiedzy na temat współcześnie zachodzących deformacji na terenie Polski oraz zweryfikowania lub zmodyfikowania hipotez o charakterze deformacji i w niektórych przypadkach pozwolą na uszczegółowienie modeli geofizycznych deformacji.
    This paper presents problems related to the applications of SAR interferometry and its newest branch Persistent Scatterers Interferometry in geodynamical research of selected areas in Poland. Three study areas of “Warmia”, “Podhale” and “Otmuchów” were characterized. The methodology employed was described and problems associated with analysis and interpretation of PSInSAR data were highlighted. Due to technical problems with large data processing, only some smaller areas were processed. In all cases, the resultant PS densities were high and thus allowed further analysis. However, in the recent stage of the project, the detection of deformation was possible, but its detailed interpretation is still very difficult. The preliminary interpretations show that, in some cases, the processed area was too small and the data needed reprocessing. It was shown that, in case of geodynamical analysis, the data cannot be interpreted separately, without in-depth knowledge of PSInSAR processing and the parameters applied. The authors hope that PSInSAR data will significantly improve the knowledge on recent dynamics of the Earth crust in Poland and give an input to verification of geophysical models and hypotheses.
