The objective of this paper is to show main difficulties in the intercultural translation process which has been taking place during the Discovery and the Conquest of the New World, in the 15th and 16th centuries. These historical facts are considered as a metaphor of translation in general, and letters, chronicles and histories of some Spanish authors of that period are analyzed as examples of interpretation / translation based on their eurocentric and Christian background. Finally, domestication of the New Spain culture is indicated as a main translation strategy and a confrontation of cultures rather than dialogue is stressed as a general feature of the cultural contact.

Tematem artykułu jest autobiograficzna narracja polsko-szwedzkiego pisarza i dziennikarza (ur. 1951). Uwaga autora skupia się na przybliżeniu wpisanego w utwór procesu translacji pojęć i kategorii związanych z polskimi realiami na język i system pojęć zrozumiałych dla czytelnika szwedzkiego. Ta translacja odbywa się na co najmniej trzech płaszczyznach: językowej (język polski versus język szwedzki), kulturowej (obecność realiów związanych z kulturami: polską, szwedzką i żydowską) oraz tożsamościowej (narrator identyfikujący się równocześnie, choć w różnym stopniu i na różne sposoby z trzema kulturami). Obecność bohatera autobiografii w kilku przestrzeniach kulturowo-językowych pozwala mu na dystans do każdej z nich, to zaś ułatwia mu przeprowadzenie autowiwisekcji (główna motywacja powstania zapisu), mającej wymiar autoterapeutyczny.  
This article concerns an autobiographical narrative written by a Polish-Swedish writer and journalist Maciej Zaremba Bielawski (born in 1951). It focuses on the process of translating concepts and categories related to the Polish realities into the language and system of concepts that are comprehensive to Swedish readers. This process occurs at three levels: linguistic (Polish versus Swedish), cultural (realities related to the Polish, Swedish and Jewish cultures), and identity (a narrator who identifies himself with three cultures, though to a different degree and in different ways). The narrator lives in a few cultural and linguistic spaces, distancing himself from each of them. Keeping the distance allows him to focus on himself and to practice self-reflection (the main motivation for writing the book in question). It also instigates a process that is not only self-cognitive but also self-therapeutic for the writer.

The article reconstructs selected motifs in the philosophy of Lin Yutang, a twentieth-century Chinese thinker, translator and editor, especially popular in the West, undertaken, as it were, on the margins of his work to explain and popularize Chinese culture and philosophy in the West. Lin reflects on issues such as how to effectively and accurately explain a radically alien civilization to the Western-educated reader, in his or her own language, and who can appoint himself as the representative of Chinese culture at all? As a bilingual author, Lin very accurately shows the state of suspension between two cultures, characteristic of an intercultural interpreter who attempts to simultaneously move within two disproportionate, culturally determined conceptual schemes.
W artykule rekonstruuję wybrane wątki refleksji Lin Yutanga, popularnego, zwłaszcza na Zachodzie, dwudziestowiecznego chińskiego myśliciela, tłumacza i redaktora, podejmowanej niejako na marginesie jego pracy na rzecz objaśniania i popularyzowania chińskiej kultury i filozofii na Zachodzie. Lin podejmuje namysł nad takimi zagadnieniami, jak: W jaki sposób skutecznie, a jednocześnie trafnie opowiedzieć czytelnikowi wykształconemu w kulturze zachodniej, w jego własnym języku, o radykalnie obcej cywilizacji? Kto w ogóle może mianować samego siebie reprezentantem kultury chińskiej? Jako autor dwujęzyczny Lin nader celnie ukazuje stan zawieszenia, stan bycia pomiędzy, charakterystyczny dla tłumacza międzykulturowego, który podejmuje próbę jednoczesnego poruszania się w obrębie dwóch niewspółmiernych, kulturowo zdeterminowanych schematów pojęciowych.

The text presents the tasks and conditions of making Polish thought and culture present on the example of the implementation of Biblioteka Kultury Polskiej [Library of Polish Culture] project (2014–2020). It includes a presentation of the individual volumes of Biblioteka (Kłoskowska, Białostocki, Ossowska, Strożewski…) in their translational aspects, history and communication of cultures and their humanities. It summarizes the results and experiences of the first edition and chalks out tasks for the post-pandemic and wartime period. It includes considerations on bringing out in cross-cultural translations the shared horizon of the Humanum.

My point of departure for this paper is that translation, so long neglected in foreign language teaching, can not only improve students’ linguistic competences in both a foreign language and their mother tongue, but also their awareness of cultural and intercultural elements. It is a widespread popular assumption, among those not involved in language teaching, that linguistic competences are the key to learning a language and to communicating in a foreign language; consequently, they assume that translation ought to play a major role in the study of a foreign language. Indeed, late 20th century theories of language teaching, apart from the grammar-translation method, have largely ignored or criticized the role of translation. I will focus on a translation course I taught to a class of a year three Italian undergraduate students studying foreign languages, and discuss the advantages of using translation to improve students’ linguistic competences, in their mother tongue and in the foreign language, and to develop their intercultural communicative competences and their cultural (Bassnett, 2002, 2007) and intercultural awareness (Kramsch, 1993, 1998). The translated text was taken from The Simpsons, season 21, episode 16.

Cultural codes, that is elements of permanent perception and interpretation of reality in a given culture, have impact on the effectiveness of intercultural communication. An effective translation of these codes constitutes the core of international understanding on many planes, including the political and legal systems of particular countries, or to put it broadly - their legal cultures. The present article proposes a general discussion of the issue of translating cultural codes of legal Polish and Russian, as well as outlining ways to cope with difficulties occurring in the translation process.

Tłumaczenia biznesowe w nauczaniu języków obcych na wyższych uczelniach: Cele i metodyka Sonia Colina (2003) stawia tezę, że nauczyciele języków obcych mają trudności z określeniem właściwej metodyki przekładu w dydaktyce. W niniejszym artykule zbadano, w jakim stopniu spostrzeżenia dydaktyczne dotyczące rozwijania kompetencji interkulturowej w translatologii są spójne z założeniami funkcjonującymi w glottodydaktyce. Przedstawiamy zintegrowany model dydaktyczny, który jest wynikiem naszych poszukiwań, oraz niektóre wyniki badania pilotażowego, w którym zintegrowany model został przetestowany pod względem wykonalności podczas praktycznych zajęć tłumaczenia w ramach programu nauczania języka obcego. Zakelijk vertalen in het universitaire vreemdetalenonderwijs: doelstelling en aanpak Sonia Colina (2003) stelt dat docenten vreemde talen moeite hebben met het bepalen van een didactische benadering van het vertaalonderwijs in het vreemdetalenonderwijs (VTO). Op zoek naar een oplossing zullen we onderzoeken in hoeverre de didactische inzichten uit de vertalersopleiding voor de bevordering van de interculturele communicatieve competentie (ICC) compatibel zijn met die voor verbetering van diezelfde competentie in het VTO. Na een overlap in betekenis en inhoud van een aantal kernbegrippen uit beide onderwijsdomeinen te hebben bevestigd, konden we een gecombineerd didactisch model (hierna model 1) definiëren voor de verbetering van de ICC in VTO-vertaling. De combinatie van de twee modellen komt neer op de implementatie van elementen van de functionele benadering (Nords-model) bij de vertaling naar een ICC-model dat wordt gebruikt in het VTO (Van Kalsbeek-model). In dit artikel presenteren we enkele bevindingen van een pilotstudie waarin model 1 werd getest op de implementeerbaarheid ervan in vertaalcolleges in het kader van het onderwijs Nederlands als Vreemde Taal.
According to Sonia Colina (2003) foreign language teachers have difficulties in determining a didactic approach to teaching translation in foreign language education (FLE). In search of a solution, we will examine to what extent the didactic insights in Translation Studies on intercultural communicative competence (ICC) are compatible with those for the enhancement of the same competence in FLE. In this article we present some findings of a pilot study in which an integrated didactical model was tested on its implementability in the framework of translation classes for Dutch Foreign Language Teaching.

Translation encompasses a complex activity in which we must transfer ideas from a source language to a target language, so that knowledge of the environment surrounding the working languages becomes a necessary competence to carry out the translation activity. Within this knowledge, we must necessarily include the cultural aspects of a language, either from an intercultural or an intracultural perspective. For the purpose of this article, we will focus on how intercultural elements can be developed in the classroom of Spanish as a foreign language. In order to accomplish our aim, we will expose based on empirical analysis the introduction of sociocultural items in university studies with beginners learners (A1-A2) and the result obtained, knowing that the primary objective of this curriculum is to prepare students to be translators or interpreters.

The article analyses Brygida Helbig’s novel Niebko (2013) and its German translation (Kleine Himmel, 2019). The author of the paper discovers numerous inconsistencies in the two language versions. The adopted perspective is of an interdisciplinary nature, it combines linguistic and literary elements. The conclusions of the analysis contribute to reflections regarding the translation of intercultural literature, the phenomenon of self-translation, and the redefinition of the term “translation”.
Artykuł poświęcony jest analizie translatorycznej powieści Brygidy Helbig pt. Niebko (2013) oraz jej niemieckiego przekładu (Kleine Himmel, 2019). Porównanie obu wersji pozwala stwierdzić liczne rozbieżności. Przyjęta perspektywa translatologiczna ma charakter interdyscyplinarny, łączy elementy językoznawcze oraz literaturoznawcze. Wnioski z analizy stanowią przyczynek do refleksji na temat przekładu literatury interkulturowej, zjawiska autotranslacji oraz redefinicji pojęcia „przekład”.

Translation as an encounter of different identities The interest in the national identity of Slavic people is related to the processes of social, political and ideological changes as well as to European integration and globalization. The question of the national identity of Slavic people concerns similarities and differences between them, influenced by the specific perception and categorization of reality. After the period of forced transnational integration and constructed linguistic and cultural national communities, the Slavic linguistic views of the world are diversified. Both for Macedonian and Polish people, language is one of the exponents of national identity. Macedonian literary texts translated into Polish enable readers to encounter different cultural phenomena, reflected in artistic visions and symbols. Their perception is quite difficult as it requires profound knowledge and intercultural competence. As examples, we will consider Polish translations of important Macedonian novels, Tvrdoglavi (Polish title: Zawzięci) by Slavko Janevski, Vremeto na kozite (Polish title: Czasy kóz) by Luan Starova, Razgovor so Spinoza: roman‑pajažina by Goce Smilevski (Polish title: Rozmowa ze Spinozą: powieść–pajęczyna) and Skriena kamera (Polish title: Ukryta kamera) by Lidija Dimkovska.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest opis kompetencji interkulturowej jako kompetencji bazowej w dydaktyce przekładu na poziomie uniwersyteckim. Kompetencja interkulturowa składa się na ogólną kompetencję tłumaczeniową. Jest definiowana jako zespół wiedzy, umiejętności i nawyków w komunikacji w zakresie przynajmniej dwóch kultur, świadomie wykorzystywanych przez tłumacza w różnych środowiskach pracy. Kompetencja interkulturowa poprzez taką propozycję nominacyjną podkreśla relacyjny charakter kultur uczestniczących w komunikacji za pośrednictwem przekładu (kultury oryginału, kultury przekładu oraz często kultury trzeciej). W artykule podjęta została próba opisu sposobów nabywania takiej kompetencji poprzez analizę konkretnych przypadków problemów przekładowych w procesie tłumaczenia w warunkach dydaktyki akademickiej.
The purpose of this paper is to provide a description of intercultural competence as basic competence in translation teaching at a university level. Intercultural competence is part of general translation competence. It is defined as a combination of knowledge, skills and habits in communication with regard to at least two cultures, consciously used by the translator in different work environments. Intercultural competence through such a definition proposal emphasizes a relational character of cultures participating in communication via translation (the culture of the original, the culture of the translation and frequently the third culture). The paper aims to describe ways of acquiring this competence through the analysis of concrete examples of translation problems in the course of translation in translation teaching.

Opis:
The following article has two goals. The first is the presentation of theoretical approaches to the translation of culture-specific content and explanation of some relevant terms, which include culture, interculturality, intercultural competence and translational cultural competence. The second is to discuss practical teaching problems and possible solutions that translational didactics must keep in mind in its research perspective. The practical considerations relate to the transfer of written texts and to the education of students who gain their first experiences in translational activity. With questions about the text, which trigger its analysis on the macro- and microstructural level, the students should be motivated to approach cultural content reflexively and to reflect it in the target language.

The article discusses the research proposal presented in Światowa historia literatury polskiej. Interpretacje [World History of Polish Literature. Interpretations], edited by Magdalena Popiel, Tomasz Bilczewski and Stanley Bill. Mikołajczak contrasts the research concept of world literature with the dominant approaches to the world literature in the area of contemporary literary studies and the traditional model of the history of literature. She reflects on the situation of Polish literature in the world, taking into account the ways in which Polish works circulate in other cultural circles, the possibilities and limitations of translation as well as shifts within the canon. She also indicates the opportunities that open up for Polish literature in the global context.

Leta 2015 je v slovenskih prevodih izšlo 15 poljskih knjig, kar je skoraj dvakrat več v primerjavi z letom 2014. Dominirala je proza; glede poezije poljsko leposlovje sta predstavljala dva pesnika različnih generacij: Tadeusz Różewicz, katerega dve zbirki (Profesorjev nožek in Siva zona) prevedla je izkušena prevajalka Jana Unuk ter Justyna Bargielska, mlada poljska avtorica, katere je izbor pesmi z naslovom Serija manjših ran pripravila prevajalka Staša Pavlović. Zanimivo je, da so Slovenci leta 2015 prevedli celo 6 knjig za otroke in mlajše bralce (Onichimowska, Maleszka, Żółtowska -Darska) ter dve knjigi o verskih tematikah (Sestra Faustina Ewe Czaczkowske ter osebni zapiski Janeza Pavla II z let 1962—2003). Popestren izbor, ponudba prevajalcev ter z leta v leto naraščajoče število slovenskih prevodov poljskega leposlovja (ki so jih večinoma izdale zelo prestižne založbe, kot so Beletrina, Družina, Modrijan in Cankarjeva založba) pokazujejo, da se slovenski bralci zanimajo za poljsko kulturo in rade volje berejo poljske knjige.
In 2015, fifteen Polish books were translated into Slovenian, which is almost twice as much when compared to 2014. Prose has been dominant; Polish poetry was represented by two poets of different generations: Tadeusz Różewicz, whose two collections (Profesorjev nožek and Siva Zona) were translated by the experienced translator Jana Unuk. Furthermore, Justyna Bargielska, a young Polish poetess, whose poetry selection entitled Serija manjših ran was prepared by Staša Pavlović. Interestingly, in 2015 Slovenes translated six books for children and young readers (Oni- chimowska, Maleszka, Żółtowska -Darska) and two books on religious topics (Ewa Czaczkowska’s Sestra Faustina and John Paul II’s personal notes from 1962 to 2003). The varied selections, translators’ offerings and the growing number of Slovenian translations of Polish literature (which were mostly published by very prestigious companies such as Beletrina, Družina, Modrijan and Cankarjeva založba) demonstrate that Slovenian readers are interested in Polish culture and interested in reading Polish books.

En el presente artículo comentamos el carácter paradójico de la traducción literaria percibida como una de las herramientas para el diálogo intercultural. Cada traducción de este tipo se realiza dentro de un marco de posibilidades vinculadas a varios factores, desde las aficiones y las capacidades del traductor, pasando por las condiciones del actual mercado editorial, hasta la situación política local e internacional. Además, frente a la creciente conciencia de la intrínseca intraducibilidad de los textos, relacionada con la estructura del lenguaje como tal, parece fortalecerse la tendencia a considerar la traducción no tanto como una transferencia de significados, sino más bien como un tipo de creación original. Esta constelación de factores, que siempre funcionan de manera caótica y arbitraria, constituye, sin embargo, una de las bases más importantes del diálogo intercultural. Concentrándonos en el diálogo cultural polaco-argentino, tomando en cuenta la marginalidad de las dos culturas en cuestión y ubicándonos en el mapa de las discusiones traductológicas recientes, trataremos, primero, de mostrar qué consecuencias tienen estos factores para las relaciones culturales entre Polonia y Argentina y, segundo, de proponer un proyecto cuyo objetivo sería mejorar la eficacia de las transferencias culturales entre ambos países.
In this paper we discuss the paradoxical nature of the literary translation seen as one of the tools for international dialogue. Every literary translation depends on a variety of factors, starting with the interests and capacities of the translator and ending with the conditions of the editorial market and with the local and international political situation. Also, in view of the increasing consciousness of the intrinsic untranslatability of every text, resulting from the very essence of language, we can observe a strong tendency to perceive the translation more as an original creation than an effort to transfer meanings. This constellation of factors, which seem to function chaotically and arbitrarily, is, however, one of the most important foundations of every international dialogue. Concentrating on the cultural dialogue between Poland and Argentina and taking in consideration the marginality of these two cultures, we will demonstrate the consequences of the factors above for the cultural relations between the two countries and we will try to imagine how to improve the effectiveness of the cultural transfers between them.

The article presents the main concepts of biblical translation studies and their importance in intercultural education. On the example of the New Testament term παρακαλέω, the need to update religious translations of source texts is shown due to the changing culture and the loss of some traditional terms of their original meaning. In the theoretical layer, the importance is discussed of language in the formation of human identity and social structures, and the possibility is indicated of including these processes in the strategy of intercultural education.
W artykule przedstawiono główne koncepcje translatoryki biblijnej oraz ich znaczenie w edukacji międzykulturowej. Na przykładzie nowotestamentowego terminu παρακαλέω ukazano konieczność aktualizacji przekładów religijnych tekstów źródłowych ze względu na zmieniającą się kulturę i utratę przez część tradycyjnie funkcjonujących terminów ich pierwotnego znaczenia. W warstwie teoretycznej omówiono znaczenie języka w kształtowaniu się tożsamości człowieka i struktur społecznych oraz wskazano na możliwość włączenia tych procesów do strategii edukacji międzykulturowej.

Rekontekstualizacija Gombrowiczeve proze v slovenskih prevodih se je izvršila v treh različnih časovnih in prostorskih interpretacijskih okvirih: v sedemdesetih, devetdesetih letih in 2000 letih. Opredeljujejo jo: strategija prevajalcev, politični položaj, prevodi in recepcija tujih književnosti (predvsem zahodnih), globalni kulturno-civilizacijski položaj in stanje ciljne literature prevoda. V prevodih Gombrowicza prihaja ocenjevanje kulturnih barier in stopnja njihovega preseganja tako iz izhodiščne kot tudi ciljne kulture: torej od politične aktualizacije poljske zavesti prek retorične zaznamovanosti njenega koda do hibridizacije in obojestranskega prenikanja časov, prostora, spoznavnih in emocionalnih stališč. Težavo pri opazovanju literanega medkulturnega dialoga v slovenski prozi poglablja dejstvo, da so se poleg prevodov Gombrowicza približno v istem času (zlasti od druge polovice osemdesetih let naprej) pojavili prevodi iz ameriških literatur.
The recontextualization of the prose by Gombrowicz occurred within three different interpretational frames in the translation into Slovene, time frames and space frames: in the 70., 90. and in 2000. They are appointed by the strategy of the translators, by the political situation, by the translations and the reception of foreign literature (above all western literature), by the global situation connected with culture and civilization and by the condition of the target literature of the translation. All of them are determined by the system of expectations of the audience and by the „life” of the translations. In the translations of Gombrowicz have evolved cultural barriers and the degree of crossing them from the side of the source culture and also from the side of the target culture: beginning with the political actualization of Polish awareness through its rhetorical over-coding up to hybridization and mutual merging of times, space, cognitive and emotional attitudes. The difficulty of following the intercultural literary dialogue in the Slovene prose is deepened by the fact that the translations of American literatures occurred more or less when the translations of Gombrowicz were done (particularly, beginning in the mid 80.).

The aim of this paper is to examine translation of the European arrest warrant in the lightof intercultural communication. The paper consists of three parts. The first part addresses majoraspects of judicial cooperation in criminal matters within the territory of the European Union (EU)and introduces the European arrest warrant (EAW) as one of the major legal instruments of suchcooperation. The second part focuses on the notion of legal translation as an act of interculturalcommunication. The third part illustrates, via translation of the European arrest warrant, howcertain differences between the two most important legal families of the world, the Common Lawand the Civil Law, influence the process of intercultural communication.
Niniejszy artykuł poświęcony jest badaniu nad tłumaczeniem Europejskiego nakazu aresztowania (ENA) w świetle komunikacji międzykulturowej. Artykuł składa się z trzech części. Celem pierwszej z nich jest przedstawienie głównych aspektów współpracy sądowej w sprawach karnych w Unii Europejskiej (EU) oraz przybliżenie ENA jako jednego z głównych instrumentów prawnych prawa karnego UE. Część druga omawia tłumaczenie ENA w świetle komunikacji międzykulturowej. Część trzecia opisuje w jaki sposób pewne różnice pomiędzy dwoma najważniejszymi systemami prawnymi, tj. prawem zwyczajowym oraz prawem cywilnym (kontynentalnym) wpływają na proces komunikacji międzykulturowej.

The article presents theoretical considerations pertaining to the use of translation in foreign language teaching and argues for the reinstatement of translation activities in language teaching to contribute to the development of intercultural sensitivity among language users. The authors build upon critical-ecological reflections in language education. They posit that a globalized world requires a departure from the monolingual language teaching paradigm, particularly in multicultural and multilingual contexts such as, for example, a united Europe. The argument touches upon the issues of neoliberal skills training, intercultural education, language pedagogy (glottodidactics), language acquisition and translation theories as well as observations of the practicalities imposed on L2 users by the postmodern reality and market forces. The authors present the incorporation of translation practices into foreign language teaching as a means of enhancing intercultural sensitivity and a way of fighting linguistic and cultural colonization. The ultimate goal – the new “paradigm shift” (Butzkamm and Caldwell, 2009) – is to contribute to social justice via foreign language education.

With the superdiversity (Blommaert 2010, 2013) of today’s societies translator training faces new challenges. This article sets out to explore the issue of intercultural competence in translator training from the perspective of the views and beliefs of English language majors in Poland. Rather than discussing the translation programmes offered to students, the study presented here concentrates on preconceptions as to who a translator is, what skills, knowledge and competences are crucial for a translator and what difficulties s/he may face. Students’ beliefs prove that they are ready for courses which will encourage them to reflect on their views and will help them deepen their understanding of culture to include intercultural aspects as well as aspects of their own culture. As Polish students wanting to be translators may simply not be aware of the intercultural challenges entailed by the profession, it is argued here that overt, explicit focus on intercultural communication and raising students’ intercultural competence is needed.
Określenie kompetencji tłumacza dla potrzeb kształcenia stanowi ogromne wyzwanie wobec zmieniającej się rzeczywistości, w której przyjdzie pracować absolwentom studiów językowych. Jednym z kluczowych elementów, których brak może podważyć użyteczność oferowanych kursów jest kompetencja interkulturowa. Omówiwszy modele kompetencji tłumaczeniowej oraz rolę kompetencji interkulturowej jako elementu kompetencji tłumacza, artykuł przedstawia wyniki badania przeprowadzonego wśród 60 studentów I i II roku, z których większość deklaruje gotowość podjęcia kursów i pracy tłumacza w przyszłości. Badaniu poddano przekonania dotyczące tego, kim jest tłumacz, jakie umiejętności, wiedzę i kompetencje powinien posiadać i jakie trudności może napotkać w swojej pracy. Wyniki pokazują, że studenci potrzebują kursów, które zachęcą ich do refleksji na temat ich poglądów i pomogą im pogłębić zrozumienie kultury o aspekt interkulturowości oraz ich własną kulturę. Ponieważ polscy studenci pragnący zostać tłumaczami mogą nie być świadomi międzykulturowych wyzwań związanych z tym zawodem, istnieje potrzeba rozwinięcia ich kompetencji interkulturowej poprzez wyraźne zaznaczenie wagi tej kompetencji w ich kształceniu.

Prevajalec in prevod sta pogosto označena metaforično (npr. prevajalec kot izdajalec, kanibal, kuhar, prevod kot uvoz avtorja in izvoz bralca, prevajanje kot širjenje obzorij ipd.), k tem oznakam želim dodati še eno: prevajanje kot dogodivščina prevajalca in bralca, prinaša jima zadovoljstvo, zadoščenje, razočaranje in muke. Prevajamo predvsem zaradi antropološke in obenem tudi sporazumevalne vloge prevoda. dogodivščina ni vezana le na potovanja, čeprav se ob pripravah na pot pogosto pripravimo tudi na nenavadna doživetja. od samega potovanja se razlikuje glede na racionalna, pragmatična, emocionalna in fizična pričakovanja. na pojem pričakovanje se vežejo lastnosti: šibke točke posameznika, ambicije, želja po sporazumevanju, spoznavanju in doživetju nečesa dotlej nepoznanega ter interakcija med njimi v obliki presenečenja, očaranosti in celo šokiranosti. V vsakem tipu prevoda je vsaj eden od elementov pomensko-predstavnega polja pojma »dogodivščina«. zaradi tega se posploševanje pravil (zlasti pri umetniškem prevodu) nenehno srečuje s težavami, tako kot udeležba na tečaju ustvarjalnega pisanja ne naredi iz vsakega udeleženca pesnika, pisatelja ali dramatika. zmeraj je zraven tisto, čemur rečemo nadarjenost in empatija.
The translator and translation are often referred to by means of metaphors (e.g. translator traitor, cannibal, cook, translation is the author’s import and the reader’s export, translation is a fusion of horizons, etc.), to which i will add another one: translation is an adventure for the translator and the reader, bringing joy, satisfaction, disappointment and suffering. We translate predominantly because of the anthropological, and thus the communicative, aspect of translation. adventure does not only mean a journey, although taking to the road, we very often expect extraordinary experiences. it is distinguished from the road by means of a desire of rational, pragmatic, emotional and physical nature. The paradigm of desire is defined by: individual weaknesses, ambition, desire for communication, knowledge and experience of something so far unknown and the interaction between them in the form of surprise, dazzlement, and even shock. all types of translation include at least one of the elements of the semantic-imagery field of the phenomenon and the word adventure. This results in that the normalization of rules (especially in the case of artistic translation) often meets with difficulties, just as not every participant of creative writing course is turned into a poet, writer or dramatist. There remains the ‘something’, which is called talent and empathy.

Opis:
Elementy kulturowe stanowią jeden z głównych argumentów na rzecz nieprzekładalności. Niemniej jednak nagroda Instytutu Cervantesa przyznana Ewie Zaleskiej za przekład Żołnierzy spod Salaminy po raz kolejny kwestionuje poglądy sceptyków tłumaczenia. Powieść Javiera Cercasa, głęboko osadzona w realiach historycznych i społecznych Hiszpanii, jest przykładem tekstu przepełnionego elementami kulturowymi. Rola, jaką autor powieści przypisuje pamięci historycznej, wymaga od tłumacza nieustannego podejmowania decyzji w kwestii wierności autorowi i/lub potencjalnemu czytelnikowi przekładu. W niniejszym artykule analizujemy techniki zastosowane przez Ewę Zaleską podczas tłumaczenia elementów kulturowych, zwracając szczególną uwagę na elementy charakterystyczne dla hiszpańskiej wojny domowej. Traducción al polaco de Soldados de Salamina de Javier Cercas desde la perspectiva de la comunicación intercultural Los referentes culturales constituyen uno de los principales argumentos a favor de la intraducibilidad. No obstante, el Premio de Traducción Literaria del Instituto Cervantes otorgado a Ewa Zaleska por la traducción de Soldados de Salamina desmiente una vez más a los escépticos de la traducción. La novela de Javier Cercas, fuertemente anclada en el contexto sociohistórico de España, podría citarse entre los libros más espinosos en cuanto a la traducción de los elementos culturales. El fuerte compromiso del autor con la memoria histórica exige del traductor una constante toma de decisiones en cuanto a la fidelidad al autor y/o al potencial lector de la traducción. En este trabajo nos proponemos analizar las técnicas de traducción elegidas por Ewa Zaleska, prestando una especial atención a las técnicas de traducción de los culturemas específicos de la guerra civil española.
Cultural references constitute one of the main arguments to support untranslatability. However, the prize of the Cervantes Institute for Literary Translation awarded to Ewa Zalewska for translation of Soldados de Salamina proved translation skeptics wrong again. The story by Javier Cercas is deeply set in the social and historical context of Spain; therefore, it could be an example of a very demanding book with regard to the translation of cultural references. The author’s strong attachment to the historical memory requires making endless decisions concerning faithfulness to the author and/or to a potential reader of the translation from the translator. The article analyzes translation techniques used by Ewa Zalewska, with the special consideration of cultural references specific for the Spanish Civil War
