Migrant integration remains a continuous challenge in many EU countries, as shown by the retreat from multiculturalism and the concerns regarding Muslim migrants. In recent years, the increase in asylum-seekers has added further complexities to the issue. Meanwhile, volunteering is considered to be an important aspect of today’s society and a thermometer of civic well-being. Bringing together the field of migration studies and research on volunteering, we investigate whether volunteering would foster processes of integration and intercultural relations. We do so by presenting an innovative empirical study based on interviews and self-administered questionnaires conducted at two points in time over a period of about a year in a specific setting that brought together EU and third-country nationals in volunteering activities in six European contexts. Thus, we are able to provide an in-depth account of volunteering experiences and their effects on intercultural relations and processes of integration. The research highlights how volunteering fosters social interactions, intersecting with dynamics of inclusion. It is a valuable tool that strengthens the community as well as the process of social integration, helping to overcome the tensions and conflicts that persist in European societies. At the same time, we argue that volunteering cannot make up for all integration challenges since the process of societal integration requires a more comprehensive approach which includes tackling discrimination in structural integration.

The extent to which relationships in organizations are co-operative depends on the level of internal integration between functional and departmental groups. These relationships become even more critical in international businesses as well as in geographically dislocated subsidiaries. Cultural characteristics and different factors which managr, facilitatr and/or hinder internal integration present the basis for studying internal integration of different functions. Therefore, the following paper discusses various theories of internal integration and its role in organizations. More specifically, it focuses on logistics and marketing functions and explores studies that have investigated and examined the levels of internal integration of logistics and marketing functions. With the objective to identify potential implications, high/low levels of internal integration may have on intercultural communication which occurs in international business practices, the most prominent cultural frameworks are presented to identify implications different levels of internal integration may have for intercultural communication, in particular between Slovenian companies and their foreign subsidiaries.

Opis:
Amulticultural society, moving from a reaction to differentiation to conscious cognition, understanding, dialogue, negotiation as well as cooperation and collaboration, creates multiculturalism. Relationships between representatives of various social and cultural environments as well as national, ethnic or religious groups are treated as a manifestation of the disappearance of social distance and one of the best indicators of integration. London’s multicultural environment, in which there is a clear tendency to collectively integrate cultural identity, enables the creation of intercultural relationships with their own cultural identity. This phenomenon includes various strategies of the acculturation process and mutual adaptation of people from different countries, cultures, religions and speaking different languages. The multicultural identity of mixed relationships is determined, interalia, by the obligations of marriage resulting from the fulfilment of marital roles and compliance with the marital identity. Identity sets internal boundaries between spouses and regulates contacts with family and friends in the family, local, neighbourhood, and global environment.

W artykule przedstawiono zagadnienia dotyczące stereotypów i uprzedzeń wobec innych narodowości w oparciu o wiedzę zawartą w literaturze przedmiotu oraz badania własne prowadzone w wielonarodowych jednostkach wojskowych. Autor skupił uwagę na dwóch obszarach badań stereotypów i uprzedzeń. Pierwszy opiera się na kontekście historycznym i trwałości badanych zjawisk, natomiast drugi dotyczy zmiany stosunku do innych narodowości pod wpływem podwyższenia kompetencji kulturowej pod wpływem faz asymilacji kulturowej. W artykule przedstawiono również cechy charakterystyczne narodowości wchodzących w skład wielonarodowych jednostek wojskowych w oparciu o opinie respondentów.
The article presents the issues of stereotypes and prejudices against other nationalities on the basis of knowledge contained in the literature and own research conducted in multinational military units. The author focuses attention on two research areas of stereotypes and prejudices. The first one is based on the historical context and sustainability of the phenomena studied, whereas the other one relates to changes in relation to other nationalities under the influence of increased cultural competence under the influence of cultural assimilation phases. The paper also presents the characteristics of nationalities that are part of the multinational military units based on the opinions of respondents.

Opis:
Economic and political changes in Europe, particularly in the last decade have led to an increase in the cultural diversity of its citizens. Latvia, which received a troubling legacy from the former Soviet Union – a diverse ethnic mix, also found itself EU. In 1989, after nearly fifty years of Soviet domination it regained its independence and stood on the way of reform and transition from a totalitarian to an independent style of governance. Among the many problems that appeared in front of this small country in 2004, there were also those that are lively debated in contemporary Europe. Some of them are laws for immigrants and minority rights. Analysis of past and present situation in Latvia seem to be particularly important to the events which have recently been seen in Ukraine which is an another country of the past Soviet Union – and after 1990 also the Russian – sphere of influence. Article deals with the integration process, with Latvian law regulating issues of citizenship, minority rights and the status of the state language as conforming to international standards. It also deals with the education of national minorities in Latvia. Bilingual education proposed to the minorities has goal to integrate the Latvian society as a whole, to build a multicultural state based on unity. Bilingual education also enables the acquisition of language skills allowing the free movement on the labor market. This ensures both the protection of ethnic and religious identity by providing the understanding of the language and culture of the country of residence. Problems of this young state are still waiting for a solution by the future government in Latvia. This small Baltic country, for ten years, is integrating multinational community of its own country into the tissue of Western Europe to which it was a stranger till the year 2004.

In the following article the author presents basic directions of the European Union’s policy regarding migration and third-country nationals, as well as displays the significance of education in achieving said objectives. This article presents a legal framework of the European Union’s educational policy in migration’s context and shows the problem of immigrants’ integration through education in the culturally varied societies. The author draws attention to the significance of the integration’s model in which intercultural education plays a leading role. The author describes the difficulties associated with implementation of the European Union’s educational policy’s assumptions in local environments. In the article the author presents the conclusions of these issues’ analysis in order to indicate the main areas to improve.

Migrations of workers in globalizing world become something natural, but attention should be paid to the need for intercultural integration and the development of migration policy. The cultural diversification of states deconstructs the model of a homogenous national community, yet it requires the maintenance of the stability of democratic institutions in a situation where culturally different citizens are increasingly resistant to forced assimilation and subjugation. A multicultural state must actively protect the cultural identities of its citizens. Some dilemmas arise in the understanding of citizenship and patriotism, for which state multiculturalism and interculturalism at the level of an individual citizen become contextual references. Therefore, the subject of this article is the different types of new citizenship and patriotism, with model approaches to them. The author exposes multiculturalism, revealing the new citizenship and intercultural connotations of patriotism. She looks at these categories from a cultural borderland perspective. With reference to the pillars of coexistence identified on the basis of empirical research in this borderland, the author conceptualizes intercultural citizenship and patriotism. She also points to their multidimensional nature with an intercultural connotation. The author sees them as integrating factors of a culturally diverse society. Their national-cultural, identity, and community provenance gives an intercultural character to the integration process. Integration conceived in this way fosters the evolution of the nation-state into a heterogeneous national community operating within its borders.
Różnicowanie się kulturowe państw z jednej strony dekonstruuje model homogenicznej wspólnoty narodowej, a z drugiej strony wymaga utrzymania stabilności instytucji demokratycznych w sytuacji, gdy jego odmienni kulturowo obywatele są coraz bardziej odporni na przymusową asymilację i podporządkowanie. Państwo wielokulturowe winno bowiem aktywnie chronić tożsamości kulturowe swoich obywateli. W efekcie ujawniają się dylematy związane z pojmowaniem obywatelstwa i patriotyzmu, dla których kontekstualnymi odniesieniami stają się wielokulturowość na poziomie państwa oraz międzykulturowość na poziomie indywidualnego obywatela. Stąd różne rodzaje nowego obywatelstwa i patriotyzmu, z modelowymi ich ujęciami, których odczytanie autorka czyni przedmiotem artykułu. Eksponuje wielokulturowość ujawniającą nowe obywatelstwo oraz międzykulturowe konotacje patriotyzmu. Jako użyteczne uznaje spojrzenie na te kategorie z perspektywy pogranicza kultur. W odniesieniu do filarów współistnienia na owym pograniczu, dokonuje konceptualizacji obywatelstwa i patriotyzmu. Wskazuje na ich wielowymiarowy charakter o międzykulturowej konotacji. Postrzega je jako czynniki integrujące zróżnicowane kulturowo społeczeństwo. Ich narodowo-kulturowa, tożsamościowa oraz wspólnotowa proweniencja nadaje procesowi integracji międzykulturowy charakter. Tak pojęta integracja sprzyja ewolucji państwa narodowego w kierunku heterogenicznej wspólnoty narodowej, funkcjonującej w jego granicach.

Dziecko z doświadczeniem migracyjnym coraz częściej staje się uczniem polskiej szkoły, która nie jest do końca na to przygotowana. Szczególnym typem doświadczenia migracyjnego są migracje powrotne, kiedy to rodzina po okresie spędzonym za granicą wraca do kraju wraz z dziećmi, urodzonymi jeszcze w kraju pochodzenia rodziców bądź już na emigracji. Obecnie mamy do czynienia z nasilającymi się procesami remigracji, co sprawia, że również szkoły powinny być przygotowane na przyjęcie uczniów „powracających”, najczęściej dwujęzycznych, a jednocześnie z pewnymi ograniczeniami w zakresie znajomości języka polskiego, którzy muszą borykać się z różnicami programowymi oraz kulturowymi, m.in. dotyczącymi kultury szkoły. Wydaje się, że idea międzykulturowego otwarcia instytucji, którą można za niemiecką pedagogiką międzykulturową odnieść również do szkoły, daje narzędzia do przygotowania instytucji na funkcjonowanie w sytuacji wysokiej różnorodności społecznej i kulturowej. międzykulturowego otwarcia szkoły jako odpowiedzi na potrzeby ucznia z rodziny reemigrantów, jak również uczniów z innym typem doświadczenia migracyjnego. Międzykulturowe otwarcie szkoły zostanie również odniesione do procesu integracji społecznej migrantów, co pozwala widzieć placówki szkolne w szerszym kontekście działania sieci instytucji najbliższego otoczenia społecznego na rzecz efektywnej adaptacji społecznej oraz (re)integracji całej powracającej rodziny.
Children with migration experience are increasingly becoming students in the Polish school system that is not prepared for it. The special type of migration experience is what is called “the return migration”, when a family returns to a country after some time abroad, together with their children, that were born in the country of origin of their parents or already in exile. Currently, we are experiencing an intensification of the remigration processes, which means that schools should also be prepared to receive “returning” students, who are mostly bilingual, and at the same time with some difficulties with the Polish language, who have to deal with program and cultural differences, among others school poicies and culture. It seems that the idea of an intercultural opening of institution also refers to schools, what was told by German intercultural pedagogs, provides tools for preparing institutions for functioning in a situation of high social and cultural diversity. The aim of the article is to present the idea of intercultural opening of school as a response to the needs of students with migration experience concentrating on an example of a child from a remigrant family. At the beginning, the theory of intercultural institution opening will be presented, including the school, then the specificity of the “returning” student will be discussed, on the basis of the results of qualitative research conducted in Warsaw primary schools, in order to present the idea of intercultural opening of school as a response to the needs of the students from a family of remigrants, as well as students with a different type of migration experience. The process of the intercultural school opening will also be related to the process of social integration of migrants, which allows to see schools in the broader context of the network of institutions of the closest social environment for effective social adaptation and (re) integration of the whole returning family.

The article constitutes the second part of a series of articles pertaining to the basic perspectives of integration in CLIL educational system. At the beginning, the author’s original concept of four perspectives of integration in CLIL was presented, ordered according to the student’s perspective, the present didactic and pastoral perspective, i.e. the teacher’s. In the subsequent part of the article the author discusses in detail the second perspective, as well as indicates the main aspects of didactic integration in CLIL: (1) by terminology, (2) by discourse, (3) by higher order processing tasks, (4) by intercultural comparison, (5) by authentic materials’ scaffolding. Finally, the conclusions are presented.
El artículo constituye la segunda parte de una serie de artículos dedicados a los marcos fundamentales de integración en el sistema educativo CLIL. Al principio, se ha vuelto a presentar el concepto original de la autora de los cuatro marcos de integración en CLIL, ordenados de acuerdo con la perspectiva del estudiante. A continuación, la autora analiza en detalle el segundo marco, es decir, el de carácter didáctico y pedagógico (actuación del profesor) y analiza los principales aspectos de la integración didáctica en CLIL: (1) por la terminología, (2) por el discurso, (3) por las tareas basadas en el procesamiento profundo de los contenidos (4) por las comparaciones interculturales, (5) por el andamiaje con el uso de materiales auténticos. Finalmente, se presentan las conclusiones.

Opis:
The article focuses on intercultural communication, which creates a passage from a multicultural environment towards social integration and intercultural relations. The author introduces the topic by short characteristics of changes in the modern world, determined by social mobility and multiculturalism. The article presents then some chosen aspects of social integration of migrants seen as bilateral process which requires the development of intercultural competences of both migrants’ and the receiving community. The author further describes intercultural communication and stresses its importance for education and social development. Finally, some factors conditioning the acquisition of intercultural competence with reference to Gordon Allport’s contact hypothesis and informational influences are presented along with highlighting the importance of empathy.

The authors of the article evaluate social-communicative problems of the minority group of Roma Gypsies in Poland. The existing low linguistic competence is additionally constrained by the accompanying insufficient communicative competence. The authors emphasize that teaching of a foreign language, in this particular case of the dominant language in the country, is effective only when it is simultaneously enhanced by a corresponding interaction between the two cultures in question. The authors indicate the barriers to cultural integration that hamper the community’s capacity and capability of establishing the relationships between these communities that would be based on partnership and mutual respect: these barriers include the orality and the tabooisation of Romany culture as well as its unfamiliarity to the Poles. This, in turn, generates patterns for statements and utterances in which ceremonial patterns are of secondary importance. It is rather the pragmatic factor that governs a particular linguistic behaviour: the Romany people simply want to understand the message and want to be understood. The article stresses that the present unfortunate social communication can be changed in the future by the implementation of appropriate activities within educational strategies directed towards the target group.
