Introduction. Intentional poisonings among children and adolescents are a problem not only for paediatricians, but also constitute a big issue for public health. In many countries worldwide, including Poland, an increase has been observed in suicidal behaviours at developmental age. Objective. The aim of the study was a retrospective evaluation of patients hospitalized due to intentional poisoning in the Department of Paediatrics, Children’s University Hospital in Lublin, Poland, in 2007–2012. Materials and methods. In the study period, 149 patients were hospitalized in the Paediatric Department of the Children’s University Hospital in Lublin, due to intentional poisoning with medicines or other chemical substances. The study group comprised 135 girls and 14 boys; The majority of patients (n=105) were urban inhabitants, and only 44 lived in the rural areas. Medical records were analyzed, with consideration of medical, psychological and psychiatric examinations. Results. Girls constituted as much as 90.6% of the study group. The majority of patients lived in urban areas – 70.46%. A total of 16.77 % of patients came from incomplete families. Alcohol problem occurred in 19 families. The most frequent cause of a suicide attempt was conflict in the family, followed by school problems. During the 6-year-study period, an upward tendency in the incidence of intentional poisoning was observed, particularly in the first 4 years. Discussion and conclusion. Suicide attempts in adolescents were mostly undertaken by girls from the urban environment. The majority of those attempts were caused by family problems, including alcoholism.

The aim of this paper is to present Ricœur’s and Lé vinas’s approach to the concept of selfhood (French soi) as a response to the dispute over subjectivity which was initiated by the critics of modern tradition of the absolutization of Cartesian cogito. The debate on the notion of selfhood has not been closed yet. The author analyses two diff erent approaches to the problem. One appeals to the Hegelian dialectic, adjusting it to the formula “oneself as another” (discounting that part of the dialectical movement in which Hegel jumps to a vision of absolute knowledge). The other refers to the category of substitution. Both Ricœur and Lé vinas point to the Platonic opposition of the notions of “the Same” and “the Other.” Ricœur’s initial claim breaks with the established language of ontology. Moving beyond the circle of sameness-identity towards the dialectic of sameness- and selfhood-identity entails the transformation of the notion of otherness: it is no longer an antonym of “same,” but it is a kind of otherness that is constitutive of selfhood.

Opis:
Identification of boundary values and features which describe a system operation safety is a crucial problem for assessment of the system operation safety. In this article, an attempt to match features necessary for a description of a given system operation safety and determine their boundary values, has been made. Determination of boundary values of safety features will allow to evaluate the system safety level. The following variables have been accepted as safety features: the number of accidents, the number of fatalities, and the number of people injured in those accidents. According to these values, probability values of the numbers of people who were killed and who were injured in those accidents have been established. Probability value equal to zero has been accepted as the intentional state, the interval between 0 and the mean value of a given feature determines the acceptable state, the interval between the mean value of a given feature probability and value 0.1 determines the boundary state, whereas all features assuming values higher than 0.1 refer to the system critical state. The presented research results are considered as directives for development of safety criteria for road transport systems and determination of their critical values. The proposed method of boundary values determination can be used for assessment of safety for different transport systems.

The article is aimed to discuss the place of architecture in the space of ideas. The present work discusses a specific place, the Zaspa housing estate in Gdańsk, and refers to a specific person, namely, the author of artistic installations temporarily exhibited in the Zaspa housing estate. Also, the wider context of the specific situations in which the exhibitions were displayed is presented. The article attempts to answer the question of the importance of the quality of dwelling in the context of the quality of life of city dwellers. The work focuses on the subjective quality of life, identified most often with the feeling of satisfaction with life in its various aspects and with mental well-being. The quality of living, in turn, may be defined as satisfaction with the structure and functioning of the house and its commonly shared surroundings that constitutes the context of such living. The installations exhibited in the Zaspa estate discussed in the following article represent a potential area for activities with which to change the landscape and/or architectural elements of housing estates that refer to the living space. The essence of the research lies in the analysis of the place architecture occupies in a wider context of the intangible spaces. Homes can be perceived in a phenomenological way. It this case, the spaces of the house are inside us, just as we are inside them (Bachelard, 1994).

Artykuł ten jest próbą krytycznego omówienia sporu Ricœura z Lévinasem dotyczącego rozumienia etyki, ściśle rzecz biorąc koncepcji „podmiotu” etycznego. Wychodząc od przeprowadzonej przez obu filozofów krytyki nowożytnej absolutyzacji cogito, poddaję analizie rozwijane przez Ricœura dialektyczne ujęcie podmiotu (fr. soi) wyrażonego w formule „ten-który-jest-sobą-samym-jak-i-innym” oraz opisany przez Lévinasa fenomen „radykalnej inności”. Następnie staram się odpowiedzieć na pytanie, czy możliwe jest intelektualne porozumienie między Ricœurem i Lévinasem, polegające na wyznaczeniu wspólnego horyzontu dla koncepcji podmiotu otwartej dialektyki i podmiotu ukonstytuowanego przez źródłowe „wyznaczenie” do odpowiedzialności, w granicach którego można mówić o fenomenologii siebie, tj. fenomenologii podmiotu, który rozpoznaje się dzięki innemu niż on sam.

The article is an attempt to answer the question: what happens to a literary work – understood as Ingarden’s purely intentional objects – from the recipient’s perspective? And also: how do the images of objects arise in the minds of the audience and what are their properties? Transferring purely intentional objects to the recipient’s perspective changes their status: mental images of objects are subject to numerous fluctuations (based on emotions and cognitive processes). In this way they are transformed into forms that are non-permanent reflections of objects belonging to a literary work. Referring to Ingarden’s terminology, one might say that they become purely intentional reflections (or reflections of purely intentional objects). The article is an attempt to characterize and stratify them.

This article discusses how to interpret the so-called Knobe effect, which refers to the asymmetry in judgments about the intentionality of the side effects caused by one’s actions. The observed tendency is explained through the “moral undertone” of the actions judged. So far, discussions have mostly been held among philosophers in the analytical tradition, who see the theory of morality largely as an ethics of rules. The analysis developed in this article advances the research carried out so far to include teleological ethics, most notably the tradition of Thomistic ethics. Philosophical discussions address the problem of normative orders, focusing in particular on two types of cognition concerned, respectively, with moral judgments and facts. Investigating this issue proves to be helpful not only to explain the Knobe effect, but also to better understand the very notion of an intentional action as employed in the philosophy of action. As a result of this analysis, the Author explains the existing asymmetry in the attribution of intentionality to actions with the respondents’ confusion between cognitive orders. This problem brings us to the issue of normative competences. In analyzing the Knobe effect, normative competences would be responsible for the classification of the data collected and separation of the “purely informative” order from the order of moral judgments, referring to norms or values.

W artykule analizuję problem grupowych stanów intencjonalnych. Argumentuję, iż problem ten jest podejmowany z dwóch perspektyw – indywidualistycznej, reprezentowanej przez Margaret Gilbert, oraz obiektywistycznej, której przedstawicielką jest Deborath Tollefsen. W artykule wykazuję, że w ramach każdej z perspektyw podejmowane są różne problemy dotyczące grupowych stanów intencjonalnych. Obiektywizm lub indywidualizm w kwestii grupy jako podmiotu stanów intencjonalnych jest, w dużym stopniu, decyzją metodologiczną.
The paper concentrates on the problem of group intentional states. I argue that the problem is undertaken from two different perspectives – individualistic, represented by Margaret Gilbert, and objective, represented by Deborath Tollefsen. Analyses conducted from different perspectives investigate different problems concerning group intentional states. Objectivism or individualism according to group intentional states is based signifi cantly on methodological decision.

The purpose of this article is to make the faithful aware that the Old and New Testaments are not free from contradictions resulting both from within as well as from ancient languages and also from multitude of interpretations of various Christian theologies and, finally, from a large number of known variants of the Bible's core text. If the Holy Scriptures are verbally inspired then contradictions con-tained in them may not be incidental, but they constitute their immanent part while the Christians’ task is to resolve them individually.Therefore, removal of the contradictions, unless they result from obvious translation errors, becomes unnecessary, and they, as such, should support faith in seeking comprehension and deepen it.

Il presente intervento si propone di analizzare dal punto di vista giuridico il nuovo fenomeno, oramai globalizzato, delle comunità umane intenzionali, con l’intento di comprendere se queste nuove tipologie di aggregazione di individui possano essere considerate come forme alternative di collettività organizzate produttive di modelli giuridici differenti rispetto a quelli tradizionali, ovvero capaci di dar vita a nuovi ordinamenti giuridici, partendo dall’assunto ubi societas, ibi ius. Partendo dalle definizioni elaborate nel campo della sociologia giuridica di comunità e di comunità intenzionali, si è poi analizzata la problematica inerente la capacità delle comunità intenzionali di produrre regole giuridiche da applicare ai componenti delle comunità. È stata poi esaminata l’organizzazione giuridica della Comunità di Damanhur, situata in Piemonte (Italia), in cui vi sono norme interne di diritto privato e di diritto pubblico che regolano la vita dei consociati, un vero e proprio sistema giuridico interno della Comunità, che pone non pochi problemi nel rapporto con il diritto italiano. Il nuovo progetto di legge presentato nel 2017 al Parlamento italiano, in merito al riconoscimento giuridico delle Comunità intenzionali, potrebbe regolare in maniera definitiva questa materia, ovvero i rapporti tra Comunità e Stato di appartenenza, con il conseguente riconoscimento della esistenza di ‘ordinamenti giuridici autonomi’ facenti capo alle Comunità intenzionali.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze from a legal standpoint the new, globalized phenomenon of intentional human communities, in order to understand whether these new types of human collectives can be considered as alternative forms of traditional organizational models and capable of creating new legal systems, starting from the assertion ubi societas ibi ius. Basing on the definitions elaborated in the field of legal sociology and intentional communities, we analyzed a intentional community’s capacity to produce legal rules that apply to that members. The legal organization of the Community of Damanhur, located in Piedmont (Italy), where there are internal rules of private and public law regulating the life of its members, is a genuine legal system, which poses many problems in relation to Italian law. The new bill submitted to the Italian Parliament in 2017 on the legal recognition of intentional communities could definitively regulate the relationship between an Intentional Community and the State, with the consequent recognition of the existence of ‘autonomous legal systems’ for all Intentional Communities.

The article is devoted to the studying of semantic patterns of utterances with modal meanings of volition in the Ukrainian language. Volitive modality is determined as a peculiar type of modality that consists in expressing the speaker’s will, aimed at the accomplishment of a connection between the subject and its feature. Different semantic classifications of utterances with modal meanings of volition are considered; modal meanings of volition are allocated and systematized in the article. The modal meaning of volition is shown as a collection of the following semantic areas: categorical, tempered and neutral. Classification of semantic patterns of utterances with modal meanings of volition in the Ukrainian language is developed in the article: utterances with the modal meaning of categorical volition (imperative, directive, vetative), utterances with the modal meaning of mitigatory volition (prohibitive, optative, permissive, cohortative, desiderative), and utterances with the modal meaning of intentional volition (recommendative, requestive, jussive, debitive).

Niezwykle interesująca współczesna propozycja spojrzenia na dzieło sztuki przez pryzmat filozofii kultury, jak ją prezentuje Joseph Margolis, wskazuje na specyficzny sposób bycia dzieła, na jego ontologię jako bytu intencjonalnego. Dookreślając Intencjonalność jako cechę bytów kulturowych polegającą na ich różnorodnym przejawianiu się oraz na ich otwartości na interpretację i reinterpretację w różnych sposobach ucieleśnienia, Margolis prowadzi dyskusję zarówno na gruncie filozofii analitycznej, jak również, gdzie jej możliwości się kończą, podejmuje dialog z tradycyjną fenomenologiczną, wywodzącą się od Brentano i Edmunda Husserla. Interesujące, że brakuje wśród nich odwołań do Romana Ingardena i jego koncepcji dzieła sztuki jako bytu intencjonalnego, choć koncepcja Intencjonalności jako charakterystyki bytu dzieł sztuki (i innych bytów kulturowych) Margolisa i koncepcja dzieła sztuki jako bytu intencjonalnego Ingardena są istotnie zblieżne. Obie sytuują dzieła sztuki na trzecim poziomie bytu, poza fizycznym i idealnym, na poziomie kulturowym, który realnie istnieje.
Extremaly interesting contemporary proposal on the perception of the work of art through the prism of philosophy of culture, as it is presented by Joseph Margolis, points at the specific form of being of the artwork, on its’ ontology of an intentional being. Specifying Intentionality as the characteristics of cultural entities, based on their various forms of appearance and on their openess on interpretation and reidentification in different ways of embodiement. Margolis discusses on the grounds of analystic philosophy, and – when its’ possibilties expire – takes up a dialogue with phenomenological tradition, emerging from Franz Brentano and Edmund Husserl. It is interesting that there lack a reference to Roman Ingarden and his idea of the work of art as an intentional object, though the Margolis’ grasp on the Intentionality as the characteristics of the being of the work of art (and of other cultural entitietos) is close to Ingarden’s understanding of the work of art as an intentional object. Both of them posit the work of art on the third ontological level, neither on physical, nor on ideal, but on the cultural level, which exist factually.

The displacement o f a scientific paradigm has occurred in modem linguistics: the transition from the systematic approach to the study o f language in the communicative approach. We can observe the formation o f a new, communicative stylistics o f text. This stylistics takes place o f the traditional functional stylistics. If the text is the most important part o f the language system in the functional stylistics, then the text in the communicative stylistics is simply a verbal work by a sender which is directed at the addressee. The main intention o f the author-publicist is to convince the reader not only to the legitimacy o f the idea (ideologism), suggested by the author, but also to its correctness. Therefore, the main text-forming (intentional) categories o f any publicistic work as an impactful type o f text are the ideologism, the nomination, the evaluative format, the interpretation and the tone. It means that a certain suggested idea (ideologism) is being realized in the publicistic text with the help o f author’s evaluative foundation, the interpretation o f reality, and the strategy o f naming the stylistic manner o f disclosure (communicative aggression, communicative approval or an emphasized objectivity). All mentioned categories provide the realization o f the author’s global convincing strategy in a publicistic text and further - in a publicistic discourse as a compilation of the publicistic texts, submerged in a communicative situation (for the publicistic discourse - in the ideological communicative situation). And therefore, we can consider the ideologism, the evaluative format, and the ideological interpretation o f the event, to be the discourse (hyper-textual) characteristics o f publicism.

Introduction. The purpose of this study was to describe factors of possible importance for the occurrence of hand injury from powered wood splitters. Patients. Patients were identified by a computerized patient registry. Information was obtained from hospital records, a written questionnaire and a structured telephone interview. Results. Very few splitters were constructed according to European standards. Twenty-one percent of patients injured with wedge splitters thought that having more than one person at the machine was one cause of the accident. Seventy-nine percent of patients injured with screw splitters stated that glove use was one cause of the accident. Conclusions. The level of safety in wood splitters that cause hand injury is often poor. Having more than one person at the machine during work may contribute to wedge splitter injury. Glove use commonly contributes to screw splitter injury. Prevention should be directed towards unsafe machines and dangerous patterns of use.

Klossowski, who had originally started as a religious seeker of truth in his younger years, will – after his « reversal » – feel himself invested with the role of a « heretic » struggling with the libidinous search for truth. Even as the creator of a perverted metaphysics, he remains a seeker of the revelation of being, now in the role of the divine « adversary » who, thrown back on himself, tends to imitate a religious mystic. The divine is replaced by the whispers of the demon, which Klossowski experiences as « la complicité d'une force "démonique" » in the creation of his artworks. The Diana myth becomes a parable for the act of artistic creation. Sexuality, understood as the primordial ground of creative force that shapes the signe unique, the phantasm, shifts metaphysics to « phantasmaphysics » (Foucault), in which the mystery of the divine is exposed as a delusion (Wahnbild).

The article discusses the metatextual and intertextual dimension of one of the mottos for The Emperor by Ryszard Kapuściński, which is a quote from The New Athens by Benedykt Chmielowski. The latter was the first Polish encyclopaedia, which was highly undervalued by traditional authorities in the field of literary history, for it failed to meet the intellectual standards of the Enlightenment and was marked with the anachronistic mentality of the Saxon times. The analysis relates to the way in which Chmielowski’s motto provides an interpretative frame for the controversial book by Kapuściński, devoted to the decline and fall of the oldest African Empire – Ethiopia – in the 1960s and 1970s. The author of the paper’s main focus falls on the relationship between the meaning of the source text and the semantics of modern reportage, the role played by the popular image of Benedykt Chmielowski in the process of interpretation, the relationship between the quote and the archaic style of The Emperor, and the ways in which the quote from The New Athens interacts with the other mottos of the book – the multiplicity of which signals a new narrative strategy used by the reporter and writer.

Bohaterowie mityczni zawsze przekraczają kondycję realnego człowieka. Celem prezentowanego artykułu jest wyjaśnienie tej tendencji, poprzez odwołanie do ustaleń religioznawstwa kognitywnego, a zwłaszcza do kluczowej dla tego podejścia idei kontrintuicyjności. Zgodnie z przyjętą perspektywą mityczne zniekształcenie koncepcji człowieka nie ma charakteru przypadkowego i ogranicza się wyłącznie do naruszenia intuicyjnych oczekiwań dotyczących tzw. kategorii ontologicznych. Jeśli naruszenia tego rodzaju mają umiarkowany charakter, bądź to w postaci stopnia zniekształcenia danego wyobrażenia, bądź proporcji wyobrażeń kontrintuicyjnych do intuicyjnych, to zawierające je narracje zapamiętywane są lepiej niż narracje złożone wyłącznie z wyobrażeń intuicyjnych. Wyjaśnia to preferencje do utrwalania takich form jak mit. W stopniu szczególnym zniekształcanie intuicyjnych oczekiwań dotyczy mitycznego bohatera, co z kolei wynika z wyższego stopni istotności wyobrażeń kontrintuicyjnych agensów, nad kontrintuicyjnymi wyobrażeniami innego typu. W artykule omówiono koncepcje kontrintuicyjności w rozumieniu religioznawstwa kognitywnego, oraz genezę tej koncepcji. Następnie przedstawiono strukturę wyobrażeń kontrintuicyjnych i przykłady wyobrażeń tego rodzaju oraz przedyskutowano kwestie związków kontrintuicyjności z nadprzyrodzonością. Odniesiono się także do empirycznych weryfikacji założeń teoretycznych zwłaszcza w takim zakresie, w jakim wyjaśniają one strukturę mitycznych narracji. Artykuł kończy się rozważaniami dotyczącymi ewolucji kontrintuicyjnego bohatera mitu, który wraz z racjonalizacją tej tradycyjnej formy narracyjnej może ulegać przekształceniom w kierunku bardziej intuicyjnych wariantów.
Mythical heroes always cross the borders of what we think as the everyday condition of the real human being. The object of this research is the explanation of this phenomena by referring to some of the definitions from the cognitivist religious studies and particularly to the idea of contrintuitiveness crucial for this attempt. According to the assumed perspective, the mythical deformation of the concept of human being does not have the accidental character and is limited solely to the infringement of the intuitive expectation connected with ontological categories. If these kinds of infringements have moderate character and appear in the form of the destabilisation of the given image, or are presented in the form of proportional relations of contrintuitive representation to intuitive one, then, the narrations that embrace them are remembered better than the narrations composed exclusively of intuitive images. This is the explanation of the consolidation of such a form as a myth. The destabilisation of the intuitive expectations concerns particularly the mythical hero, but results from higher degree of the essentiality of the contrintuitive agents’ images over the contrintuitive images of other types. The research objective of this article was to present the theories of contrintuitiveness adapted to cognitive religious studies and the genesis of this conception. In the next part of the article the structure of the contrintuitive images was presented, together with the examples of these kinds of images. Further the relations between contrintuitiveness and supernaturality were discussed. The author tried also to deal with the empirical verification of the theoretical assumptions, particularly these ones which explain the structure of the mythical narration. In the end of the article we are provided with the analyses concerning the evolution of the contrintuitive mythical hero, who, together with the rationalisation of this traditional narrative form, can be transformed into more intuitive variants.

This paper addresses the problem of classifying the criminal offence of handling stolen goods under the Polish Criminal Code of 1997. Referring to two separate and contradictory views about the crime, the study looks at both of them and attempts to define the subject of legal protection of that criminal offence in the Polish legal system. To this end, the paper also discusses a judgment of 26 June 2014 of the Polish Supreme Court (I KZP 8/14), in which the Supreme Court could not conclusively resolve the issue, creating even more doubts. The author questions the position of the Polish Supreme Court, arguing that it is not supported by either logical or legal arguments which would stem from the long-standing legal tradition. The author further argues that all problems arising from the determination of the good legally protected by the criminal offence as defined in Article 291(1) of the Polish Criminal Code result from the erroneous classification of criminal offences by the Polish lawmaker.

The article focuses on the difference between murder or suicide and the act of martyrdom. The arguments refer to John Paul II’s teaching on absolute moral norms and John Finnis’ theory of basic human goods. The core of the text is a discussion with the approach of Finnis who claims that a martyr merely accepts her own death as a side-effect of her other intentional action; the discussion is based on Aquinas’s insights (mainly in "Summa theologiae") and aims to show that death is not merely an accepted side−effect, but somehow enters into the specification of the act of martyrdom. The general conclusion is that the difference between martyrdom and suicide or murder requires a refined theory of intentional action, as opposed to non−intentional effecting of something, and also, above all, calls for still more diligent study of what exactly the prime and proper objects of practical reason, of proposal, of choice and of action itself are.
