Opis:
The species Halyomorpha halys (Stål), which is endemic in East Asia, was first detected in North America in 1996 and was probably introduced into Europe in 2008. The species is polyphagous. It consumes over 170 host plant species and significantly impacts crop pro- duction. In Greece the first recording of its presence was in 2014, when it was reported as a nuisance in houses in the region of Athens. The present study describes the systematic spread and damage of this invasive pest, including the first recorded identification in peach and olive cultivations in the prefecture of Imathia in central Macedonia, Greece. Sampling was carried out in representative peach and olive farms during July and August, 2018 and 2019 in which significant levels of fruit damage were recorded, especially during 2018. The population of the species was recorded throughout the winter seasons of 2018 and 2019 in which overwintering adults were systematically recorded in shelters and other construc- tions near fruit orchards. Given the dynamics of the species and its destructive impact on a wide range of host species, H. halys is expected to be a major pest. Additionally, considering that the prefecture of Imathia is the most important peach growing area of Greece, further studies of the presence and population dynamics of this species along with the establishment of particular management actions to control the population is impera- tive for the future protection of horticultural production in Greece.

Opis:
Soybean [Glycine max (L.)], one of the most important crops in Argentina, is commonly infected by Colletotrichum truncatum, the causal agent of anthracnose. Tagetes filifolia essential oil (EO) is presented as a natural approach to minimize the dose of chemical fungicides applied to the crop. The fungus Trichoderma harzianum is used as a biocontrol agent because of its ability to produce secondary metabolites that destroy cell walls of phytopathogenic fungi. However, its performance can be affected when it is exposed to chemical fungicides. The objective of this work was to evaluate the antifungal activity of T. filifolia EO both individually and combined with chemical fungicides against C. truncatum, and its effect on T. harzianum. Fungi were isolated from soybean crops. The following pesticides were assessed: carbendazim (F1), difenoconazole (F2) and trifloxystrobin + cyproconazole (F3). The EO was obtained from native plants and its chemical composition was analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The minimum fungicide concentration (MFC) was determined for each compound. Fungicides were combined with the EO to look for combinations that allowed a reduction of pesticide doses. Among fungicides, F1 showed the strongest antifungal activity against C. truncatum (MFC = 0.25 µl ⋅ l–1) and T. harzianum (MFC = 1.5 µl ⋅ l–1). The sensitivity of both fungi to the EO was lower than to fungicides. The EO presented MFCs of 6,000 and 9,000 µl ⋅ l–1 against C. truncatum and T. harzianum. The EO and F1 affected the growth of T. harzianum at concentrations that controlled C. truncatum (31 and 10%). Eight combinations of fungicides and the EO allowed fungicide concentration reductions of up to 80%, although the growth of the biocontrol strain was also affected. The results demonstrated that T. filifolia EO can be used to control anthracnose and reduce doses of chemical fungicides applied to soybean crops. Its effect on T. harzianum should be considered in the design of integrated pest management strategies.

The rules and guidelines for integrated pest management specified in Annex III, sections 2 and 3, state “General principles of integrated pest management”: Harmful organisms must be monitored by adequate methods and tools, where available. Such adequate tools should include observations in the field as well as scientifically sound warnings, forecasting and early diagnostic systems, where feasible, as well as advice from professionally qualified advisors. As part of Multiannual Programs, the Institute of Plant Protection – NRI in Poznań has been carrying out work and research for many years to develop or modify guidelines for monitoring short- and long-term forecasting of pest occurrence on crops. These guidelines are extremely helpful for farmers and advisers in determining the optimum date of chemical control of pests on plants. Regularly revised and improved the guidelines deal with pests which currently pose a threat to crops. They are developed according to the latest scientific findings and are successfully promoted among professional users and agricultural advisors. These guidelines are standardized to include descriptions of species, life cycles, symptoms of damage/infestation of crops, methods of observation targeted at warning of the need for plant protection treatments, and threshold values of harmfulness. All guidelines include extensive photographic material. Guidelines for the monitoring of pests on orchard plants, vegetables and others are prepared at the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation − NRI in Puławy and the Institute of Pomology in Skierniewice. Guidelines for about 80 pests of crops are available for public use in the on-line Pest Warning System (Platforma Sygnalizacji Agrofagów, www.agrofagi.com.pl).

Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is grown widely in the world because the seeds are rich source of protein for the rapidly increasing population. However, the production and productivity of chickpea have been experienced drastically because of biotic and abiotic stresses. It is vulnerable to a broad range of pathogens and the mainly severe pest being gram pod borer, Helicoverpa armigera. For the management of this serious pest, application of insecticides has several adverse effects on living organisms and the environment as a whole, the use of biological agents for chickpea improvement appears to be appropriate approach. Various studies by different scholars on the effect of different bio-agents against H. armigera have been carried out and found to confer resistance to pod borer. The use of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) based microbial insecticides have become an integral part of IPM approaches, particularly because these preparations provide an environmentally suitable alternative to the generally hazardeous broad-spectrum chemical insecticides. These bacterial insecticides like Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus (NPV), which is target specific and exert no effect on beneficial organisms (e.g. parasitoids and predators). Most natural populations of H. armigera have at least some degree of infection by species-specific NPVs. When the degree of NPV infection can be enhanced, H. armigera larval population can be decimated, without deleterious effects on any other organisms. Various potentially effective parasitoids, like ichneumonid, Campoletis chloridae and Trichogramma spp., are found parasitizing eggs and larvae of H. armigera infesting chickpea. Various insectivorous birds and use of bird perches have long been observed to be effective predators of H. armigera larvae. Similarly various plant extracts have shown insecticidal properties and can be used effectively on field crops. Opis:
Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is an important vegetable crop for income of small-holder farmers. However, it is attacked by many insect pests that cause high economic losses. More than sixty five research technical papers were reviewed focus on control and management strategies of Tuta absoluta (Meyrick, 1917) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae). The aim of this review paper is to call for attentions and concerted actions of concerned sectors by describing the potential damage of the pest, its entry, pathways and its control methods. The pest is becoming one of the major key pests of tomato which account for its production loss of up to 80 to 100% if left unchecked. The pest have developed resistance to dozens of pesticides and therefore the (IPM) strategy that employs bio-chemical, biological, physical and cultural methods is the only best option we had at time. Therefore, a brief outlook of the future research and applications of indigenous T. absoluta biological control agents are widely discussed.

Due to the introduction of obligatory integrated pest management from the 1st of January 2014, Poland will probably take up a number of actions. The analysis leads to the conclusion that all of them will be beneficial for organic farming as well. It was assumed that the following actions will have the highest positive impact on organic farming: cultivation of resistant cultivars, development of alternative techniques to reduce dependency on the use of plant protection products and obligatory trainings on the subject of biological pest control methods for all professional users of plant protection products.

The future of food security in Africa is being severely threatened due to an exponential increase in population, which is almost three times the increase of food production. Maize production is constrained by stem borers which cause significant yield losses. Yield losses can be further compounded by higher temperatures due to climate changes, which are expected to increase the population of maize stem borers. While several methods have been employed in stem borer management, there is still significant damage caused by maize stem borers. This necessitates better control methods including the adoption of recent biotechnological advancement in RNA interference (RNAi) technology. This review highlights evidence of an increase in the stem borer population as well as the foreseen decline in maize production worldwide due to the effects of climatic changes. Furthermore, we have drawn attention to improved methods that have been used to control stem borers in maize production as well as a reluctant acceptance of traditional biotechnology in Africa. Finally, we suggest the application of alternative RNA interference techniques to breed maize for efficient pest control in order to achieve food security, improve nutrition and promote sustainable maize production.

Opis:
Integrated pest management is actually the main direction taken in the cultivation of agricultural crops in the European Union. In accordance with its principles it is necessary to combine all available methods of reducing the occurrence of pests to a level where they do not cause losses of economic importance. Great emphasis is placed on the rational use of plant protection products and its selectivity. Essential is the large knowledge of the effectiveness of individual active ingredients and dosages in which they achieve the greatest efficacy. The aim of the experiment was to determine the possibility of using lower doses (than those registered in Poland) of fungicides in wheat cultivation in comparison to full doses. In BBCH 75 stage (medium milk) stem-base assessment was performed to confirm the effectiveness of mentioned above fungicides against eyespot of cereals (Oculimacula spp.) and Fusarium foot rot (Fusarium spp.). Application of fungicides in BBCH 31 stage in both doses (registered and reduced) allowed to obtain higher yields in comparison to non protected plots in two years of experiment.

The article is focused on microbiological and silvicultural properties of bacterial wetwood of silver birch (Betula pendula), also known as European white birch. During the active phase of the disease, bacterial wetwood (i.e. bacterial dropsy, vascular parenchymatous bacteriosis or flux slime) is characterised by crust and periderm bloating, necrotic wet stains and abundance of exudate. The disease is more likely to occur in older (r = 0.56, p < 0.01) and less-dense (r = −0.29, p < 0.01) stands. The statistical model showed that the chance of bacterial wetwood increases with birch age by 0.36% per year. The stands with birch proportion of over 70% demonstrated 15.3% lower infection rate compared to the stands with lower birch presence. The stands with lower stocking demonstrated a higher proportion of infected tree distribution by 7.5% compared to the stands with higher birch representation. The most vulnerable were larger, older B. pendula trees with longitudinally fissured bark that grow on poorer soils and experience frequent water stress. Birch associations with Pteridium aquilinum and Vaccinium myrtillus were more susceptible to infection (31.6% and 44.3%, respectively), whereas associations with Brachypodium sylvaticum, Sphagnum palustre and Calluna vulgaris were at lower risk. Strong ecological and trophic association of bacterial wetwood was present between silver birch and Tremex spp., particularly Tremex fuscicornis. Mycobiota was represented by Rhizopus microsporus, Mucor mucedo, Penicillium aurantiogriseum, Penicillium purpurogenum and Acremonium strictum. Enterobacter, Xanthomonas, Pantoea and Bacillus spp. associated with bacterial wetwood of silver birch were isolated. Enterobacter nimipressuralis was found to be the primary causative agent through means of artificial infection, while other bacteria were found to be either weak pathogens or concomitant. E. nimipressuralis formed the largest number of colony-forming units (CFU) for bark and cambium (164 and 127 CFU, respectively) and was also found in a small amount as a vital obligate in the automicrobiota in healthy birch trees.

An offer of the existing expert systems (ES) for crop production in our country is presented. It was established that the recommendation decision support systems in plant protection are ES-like, since they comprise components typical of ES. The DSS formulate recommendations solving problems concerning justification of protective treatments. Thus such DSS behave similarly to the ES. The availability of the information from the ES in plant protection is still scant in our country. It is necessary to develop new ES for the most important crops. Interpretation of the EU provisions allowed stating the need of presenting the integrated pest management issues in a wider scope of the integrated crop production. The multifaceted scope of these issues calls for a multidisciplinary handling of the ES development: cooperation of agronomists, phytopathologists, plant-protection specialists, meteorologists, economists, agricultural advisers, farmers as well as specialists in databases, software engineering, artificial intelligence, etc.

Opis:
The western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) attacks a large number of crop plants. The current insecticides have caused resistance in insects and have caused outbreaks of thrips. In many instances, alternative methods of insect management and natural products, offer adequate pest control and pose fewer hazards. Several species of minute pirate bugs of the genus Orius play a significant role in the biological control of a large number of thrips species, such as F. occidentalis. In this study, the insecticidal activity of four ethanolic plant extracts (Cercis siliquastrum L., Calendula officinalis L., Peganum harmala L., Melia azedarach L.) in integration with Orius horvathi (Reuter) were evaluated for controlling F. occidentalis. The present research aimed to find plant extracts with a good impact on F. occidentalis but which have fewer side effects on O. horvathi. The results showed that P. harmala extract can be considered compatible with the natural enemy for controlling thrips. When the predatory bugs O. horvathi, were released three days after P. harmala extract spraying, the integration was more effective. While the P. harmala plant extract plays an important role in thrips control, it is necessary to consider the specified time interval between the application of the P. harmala plant extract and the release of the O. horvathi predatory bugs. The ethanolic extract of M. azedarach caused a balance between the pest population and the natural enemy. This result is very important in an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program because this ethanolic extract of M. azedarach had lower side effects on the natural enemy. This means that an integration of plant derived chemicals and the natural enemy, O. horvathi, can effectively control thrips.

Opis:
The analysis of all products containing microorganisms registered in Poland for use in agriculture, whether as plant pro-tection products or as fertilizers in April 2014 shows that the market share of microbial products is not high. Only 0.75% of plant protection products and 2.7% of registered fertilizers contain microorganisms. Nine plant protection products containing 6 different microorganisms: one virus, two strains of bacteria and three fungi were placed on the Polish market. Three of them are registered as fungicides and six as insecticides. Only two uses for agriculture crops were registered; namely protection of potato against the Colorado beetle and protection of oilseed rape against diseases caused by Sclerotinia Spp. There are 21 products containing microorganisms registered in Poland according to the rules regarding fertilizers: 4 registered as fertilizers, 5 as growth stimulators, 4 as surface soil, and 8 as soil conditioners.
Do obrotu w Polsce było dopuszczonych dziewięć środków ochrony roślin zawierających 6 różnych mikroorganizmów: jeden szczep wirusa, dwa szczepy bakterii i trzy grzybów.
