Opis:
Over the past several years the number of students learning Spanish as a foreign language has doubled in Poland. The present article is an attempt at answering the following questions: Why is Spanish so popular in Polish schools and what are the reasons for choosing this language by Polish students? The authors wish to analyze the situation from the point of view of two types of motivation: internal (integral) motivation and external (instrumental) motivation. The results of our study have been compared to the results of corresponding studies carried out among Polish students learning German. At the opening of our deliberations we present the definitions and typical features of motivation. Next the typology and origin of motivation is discussed, which incorporates both the cognitive and affective approach. Finally, we submit the results of a pilot study performed among Polish middle school and high school students who learn Spanish.

Opis:
The aim of our study was to define predictors of instrumental motivation for mathematics. In our research, we used the data on the Polish sample of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) from 2012. We hypothesized that motivation to engage in mathematics at later stages of education and in professional career, called “instrumental motivation” in the project, can be predicted based on gender, mathematics self-concept, intrin- sic motivation, as well as worries about coping with mathematics and negative emotions. Using structural equation modelling, with gender and mathematics self-concept as predictors, and negative emotions, intrinsic motivation and worries about one’s math skills as mediators, we showed that helplessness in mathematics, indirectly determined by gender and mathematics self-concept, has an indirect effect on instrumental motivation, only through higher worries about one’s math abilities. Instrumental motivation turned out to be also strongly related to intrinsic motivation, which in turn is linked to a positive mathematics self-concept

Opis:
The aim of the text is to capture and identify the differences between volunteers and non-volunteers in the scope of the widely understood image of volunteering and the beliefs surrounding it. The data was gathered in three Polish cities and shows that there is a great disparity between young volunteers and non-volunteers. This disparity can be of substantial importance to the future of volunteering in Poland and it conclusively proves that young people are very pragmatic. Volunteers see the sense in sports volunteering via the instrumental benefits that transcend the experience, although they do not question the autotelicy of sports volunteering, especially when it comes to its value as an emotional experience.

Value is an interdisciplinary term studied by several fields of study. Psychology is one of them; it researches into values mostly in terms of needs, interests and human motivation. Our paper deals with the definition of the terms value, value system and value preferences of high school students. We present some results of broader research that was supposed to find out what is the value orientation of high school students as well as their preferences of terminal and instrumental values.

Opis:
The main aim of this paper is to report the outcomes of a questionnaire study diagnosing children’s level of motivation to master English and its potential correlates, conducted among 78 primary school second graders attending one of the biggest public primary schools in Wrocław, Poland. The presentation of results is preceded by a brief overview of motivation models in SLA and analysis of earlier theoretical discussions and research in this area. The data suggest that the motivation level of the participants was high. Interestingly, the internal factors were found to be stronger correlates of motivation intensity (r = .68) than external factors (r = .40/ r = .42). More specifically, the factors most strongly related to motivation were as follows: integrative motives (r = .67), L2 user self-perception (r = .58) and aesthetic assessment of the target language (r = .54).
