Opis:
Introduction. The influence of infection with two species of entomopathogenic nematodes of Steinernematidae family on metabolism of glycogen and trehalose of the host was studied. Material and methods. Last instar larvae (L₇) of Galleria mellonella were experimentally infected with Steinernema affinis and S. feltiae. At 6, 12, 18 and 24 h after infection concentrations of trehalose and glycogen as well as activity of trehalase and α-amylase were determined. Results. The content of glycogen was lower in insects infected with S. feltiae than in the controls and animals infected with S. affinis. The content of trehalose was higher in insects from both infected groups than in the controls. Its concentration was slightly higher in larvae infected with S. affinis than in those infected with S. feltiae. The activity of α-amylase after infection with S. affinis was low. It was significantly higher in insects infected with S. feltiae. In animals of both infected groups, following a significant reduction at 6 h, the activity of trehalase remained at a similar level, higher than in the controls. In the paper the effects of infection with (i) different species of entomopathogenic nematodes and (ii) the importance of the developmental stage of the insect-host for changes in its metabolism of glycogen and trehalose were discussed.

Opis:
We characterized 17 insect-pathogenic entomophthoralean fungal isolates (Entomophthoromycotina: Entomophthorales) using morphological and molecular techniques. We identified four species from various insect hosts: (i) Entomophthora planchoniana, six specimens from aphids; (ii) Pandora neoaphidis, three specimens from aphids; (iii) Zoophthora phalloides from an aphid; and (iv) Z. radicans, seven specimens from insects in the orders Diptera, Hemiptera, and Lepidoptera. Analysis of ITS1 data from E. planchoniana showed clustering in accordance to aphid host species. Entomophthora planchoniana from Macrosiphum euphorbiae clustered together, separate from the isolate from Myzus persicae. The P. neoaphidis specimens clustered with sequences from other aphid-pathogenic Pandora species in GenBank. In this study, Z. phalloides from Brevicoryne brassicae and Z. radicans from an unidentified species of Chironomidae (Diptera) in Argentina were characterized for the first time. The present study was initiated to elucidate the taxonomy of the entomophthoralean fungi in Argentina according to their morphological and molecular characters. The presented results emphasize the significance of the combination of molecular data and information on morphology, ecology, and host range for accurate identification of entomophthoralean and allied genera.

Opis:
Repeating outbreaks of the Scots pine pests, effecting in stands damages, are the most important problems of forest protection. In extreme cases they pose a real threat to the stability of stands. Naturally occurring entomopathogenic nematodes are important regulatory factors in insect populations. Many species are employed as biological agents to control the insect pests. The objectives of this research was to describe the influence of potential forest pests on occurrence and abundance of entomopathogenic nematodes. Entomopathogenic nematodes (Steinernematidae and Heterorhabditidae) were studied in woodland soils in northern Poland. Soil samples were collected from 2010 to 2015 from coniferous forests with abundant suitable insect hosts: the beetle grubs of Melolontha melolontha L. living in the soil (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) and foliage feeders Diprionidae spp. (Hymenoptera) and the caterpillar of Dendrolimus pini L., Panolis flammea Den. et Schiff. and Bupalus piniarius L. butterflies. Nematodes occurred in all type of forest and 171 soil samples were taken from 40 localities. Each study plot was approximately 100 m2 and 20 cm deep; 50 individual samples were taken using Egner’s stick, making the bulk sample approximately 600 cm3 in volume. The presence of entomopathogenic nematodes in the soil samples were determined using a standard Galleria mellonella baiting technique. Entomopathogenic nematodes were isolated from 52 soil samples (30,4%). Three species of the genus Steinernema (Steinernema feltiae, S. affine, S. silvaticum) and anyone of the genus Heterorhabditis were recorded. S. feltiae was the most common species and distinguished by the largest ecological flexibility especially to hosts. The largest number of S. feltiae samples was isolated in the places of butterfly outbreak P. flammea and also in the places of mass occurrence of beetle grubs of M. melolontha. In the feeding places of beetle of Scarabaeidae a high share of S. affine was noted too. The more rarely noted was S. silvaticum especially in outbreak of Diprionidae spp. The most abundance of entomopathogenic nematodes community was 140 000 ind./m2 in sites with M. melolontha grubs.
