Opis:
In the early 19th century, cartographic studies typically satisfied military or administrative needs. The idea behind drawing a map of Pleszew in 1806 was to show the condition of the city following a great fire. The plan distinguishes between the burnt down areas and ones saved from the fire. While the legend is small, including few explanations and the markings on the sheet are moderately distributed, the analyzed city map is a valuable resource of information which can be presented in the form of thematic visualizations. The article presents studies into the information provided by the map of Pleszew in terms of the scope of content and its spatial distribution; a method of arrangement thereof has also been proposed. The decision to attribute specific objects to separate layers has offered an opportunity of selecting the content according to various criteria and presenting it in the form of thematic visualizations.

Opis:
The existing diagnostic techniques for detecting inter-turn short circuits (ITSCs) in induction motors face two primary challenges. Firstly, they suffer from reduced sensitivity, often failing to detect ITSCs when only a few turns are short-circuited. Secondly, their reliability are compromised by load fluctuations, leading to false alarms even in the absence of actual faults. To address these issues, a novel intelligent approach to diagnose ITSC fault is proposed. Indeed, this method encompasses three core components: a novel multi-sensor fusion technique, a knowledge map, and enhanced Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). First, the raw data collected from multiple sensors undergoes a transformation into 2D data using a novel image transformation based on Hilbert transform (HT) and variational mode decomposition (VMD), which is concatenate to a novel information map including frequency fault information and rotational speed. Then, this 3D multi information image is used as input to an improvement CNN model that apply a transfer learning for an enhanced version of SqueezNet with incorporating a novel attention mechanism module to precisely identify fault features. Experimental results and performance comparisons demonstrate that the proposed model attains high performance surpassing other Deep Learning (DL) methods in terms of accuracy. In addition, the model has consistently demonstrated its ability to make precise predictions and accurately classify fault severity, even under different working conditions.

Opis:
Map perception consists of numerous processes of information processing, taking place almost simultaneously at different levels and stages which makes it conditioned by many factors. In the article, a review of processes related to the perception of a map as well as levels and properties of perception which impact its course and the nature of information obtained from a map is presented. The most important process constituting the basis of a map perception is a visual search (eye movement). However, as stated based on the studies, the process is individual depending on the purpose of map perception and it may be guided by its image (visual search guidance) or by the knowledge of users (cognitive search guidance). Perception can take place according to various schemes - “local-to-global” or “global-to-local”, or in accordance with the guided search theory. Perception is divided into three processes: perceiving, distinguishing and identifying, which constitute the basis to interpret and understand a map. They are related to various degrees of intellectual involvement of the user and to various levels of questions concerning the relations between signs and their content. Identification involves referring a sign to its explanation in the legend. Interpretation means transformation of the initial information collected from the map into derivative information in which two basic types of understanding take place: deductive and inductive. Identification of geographical space objects on the map and the interpretation of its content constitute the basis to introduce information into memory structures. In the brain a resource of information is generated called geographic knowledge or spatial representation (mental map) which may have a double nature - verbal or pictorial. An important feature of mental maps is organization of spatial information into hierarchical structures, e.g. grouping towns into regions as well as deformation of spatial relations between individual elements and their groups independent of consciousness. The process of map perception depends on various factors, including the nature, scale and map content, the degree of its complexity and compliance of the map language with cartographic principles. Important factors also include cartographic competencies of the recipient of a map conditioned by age, education and the task type. It is related to types of information about geographical space: semantic - concerning spatial references of particular objects and structural - connected to relations between elements of a map. Such relations may be determined at the regional or global level, they may concern qualitative or quantitative features as well as changes in time. Nowadays, an important factor impacting the nature and consequences of map perception is the situation in which the process occurs. Traditionally, static and unchanging maps are used under other conditions than computer maps and navigation systems, making it possible to freely zoom in and zoom out the image and its spatial scope as well as to quickly go from one image to another. Today, when the predominant way of map use is their perception on the screens of navigation systems, processes of map perception and factors conditioning it are also significant to understand the process. In the analysis of map perception, also tasks which are implemented using the map and the nature of information obtained by the map user must be taken into account.

The work aimed to create and share for public use an Interactive Map of the Main Bus Station in Lublin, using the base map as a primary data source. This solution may be an alternative to the most popular way of basing on the Google Maps or OpenStreetMap data. The final visualization was prepared by connecting digital geospatial data processing methods with land surveying techniques. The map was designed as an information system for travellers and other people moving through the bus station facility. The intended ‘interactivity’ includes the ability to display proper information about selected objects and choosing preferred viewing parameters, such as the scale or the type of base layer. The final product is an Internet application, created and published using the ArcGIS Online service, in contrast with the majority of similar applications, which are typically developed using Google Maps tools.

Opis:
The presented research concerning the landscape evolution of the area of the Kazimierski Landscape Park assumed the analysis of landscape changes that took place in the western part of the Nałęczów Plateau in eastern Poland as a result of increased anthropopressure. To achieve this goal, the diverse data was employed: archives of the “Archeological Survey of Poland” obtained from the National Heritage Board of Poland , the registry data from the 16th century made available as part of the “Atlas Fontium” project elaborated by the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences, old map of the Western Galicia from 1808, a tactical map of the Military Geographical Institute in Warsaw from 1937, and the “Topographic Objects Database” (BDOT10k) obtained from the Head Office of Geodesy and Cartography. Based on the analysed data, maps presenting the development of the settlement network from the moment of permanent settlement of the area up to the present state and maps showing the changes in land use in the Kazimierski Landscape Park over the last centuries have been designed. The results of historical and geographical analyses carried out as part of the research were compared with the results of geomorphological research conducted in the studied area. Verification of the obtained results allowed to determine the scope in which man influenced the evolution of the landscape of the analysed area, including its diversification depending on the historical period and the type of the economy. The process of georeferencing the map of Western Galicia elaborated by colonel A.M. von Heldensfeld from 1808 and the tactical map 1:100,000 of Military Geographical Institute from 1937 covering the research area (14,974 ha) was carried out in the ArcGIS Desktop software. The calibration process was evaluated in the Map Analyst program which makes it possible to analyze the distortions of old maps. Then, vectorization of selected terrain coverage classes and visualization of spatial data were conducted. This way, the land use maps were analyzed in terms of environmental changes that occurred over the past centuries by identifying the areas with the largest development changes. The obtained results were compared with the database of historical objects created for the purposes of this research, based on data provided by the National Heritage Board of Poland and the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences in order to determine the development trends of the settlement network in the region. The additional statistical analysis made it possible to determine the trend of changes and to interpret the distribution of areas threatened by the occurrence of mass movements with the analyzed anthropogenic determinants.

Today, engaging in military actions and operations in reaction to crisis requires the possession of detailed, precise, comprehensive and current information about the region. The necessity of possessing such information forced world powers and international organizations (UN, EU, NATO) to change their approach to obtaining and processing it. Satellite and aerial images became the dominant source of geographical (geospatial) data. A new intelligence method - geospatial intelligence - developed. Geospatial information is in demand not only among the military. In time, military technologies are released into civilian world. In the case of geospatial information this results in the development of geo-information web services. Military equipment, military command systems demand adequately processed geospatial information, mainly in the form of digital maps. In Poland, the first digital maps (V Map 0 and 1) were elaborated by military geographers, and the subsequent product-V Map L2 in collaboration with the civilian service. Military geography is engaged in the new international Multinational Geospatial Co-production Program. In this context, military analogue maps seem to be less and less in demand. Since World War II, global usage of paper military maps has considerably diminished (from hundreds of millions to several tens of thousands per single operation). However, this does not mean that paper maps have altogether been eliminated. All projects of digital geospatial databases provide for the existence of a 'cartographic solution', that is an automatic or partly automatic process of creating an analogue map. Since the year 2000, Military Geography has had at its disposal a full set of military analogue maps elaborated in accordance with NATO requirements and including characteristic features derived from the national experience, cartographic tradition and specific Polish needs. The main features of maps in the NATO standard are: usage of the WGS-84 coordinate system, UTM, UPS or Lambert secant conic projection, MGRS and GEOREF reference systems. Topographic and general military maps are elabora¬ted in the scale sequence of 1:25,000 to 1:1,000,000. On the basis of topographic and general maps, military special maps are elaborated (training area maps, road maps, and the like). To cater for the needs of higher command and their staff, military cartographers have elaborated a set of general geographic and political maps covering various regions of the Earth, but mainly regions of conflict (Middle East, Afghanistan, Korean Peninsula, etc.). Military aeronautical charts constitute a special group within analogue maps. Special aeronautical charts of LFC and TFC(L) series deserve special mention. They are published once a year at a specific date and updated through the ACHAD service in a 28-day cycle. The Hydrographic Office of the Polish Navy publishes nautical charts of the INT series for the region of the Baltic Sea and Baltic Straits which comply with the standards of the International Hydrographic Organization (I HO). Paper military maps are also used by civilian institutions. The potential of military geography, diminishing from year to year, may in the future inhibit keeping of such a large cartographic resource up to date. Higher engagement of civilian entities in the cartographic elaborations of Poland seems indispensible.

The article has two main goals. The first is to present the theoretical foundations in the field of cartographic sources editing, and the second is to discuss and present proposals for the model digital edition of old maps on the example of the Gaul/Raczyński map from the early 19th century. The most important questions concern relations between editing cartographic and written sources, differences between scientific and popular map editions, the role of digital tools in editing, differences and dependencies between map editing, cartography and historical map, and – finally – problems of sustainability of digital projects.

This article presents the use of GIS system for the construction of a hydraulic model in the network enterprise. The model has been built on the basis of data associated with the objects existing in the network and with their spatial relations. The data describing the network objects are usually transferred from existing technical documentation. The local stocktaking of networks is carried out in case of any doubts regarding data update status. The preparation of properly processed data, as well as verification of their correctness while entering them into a database is the most difficult and labour consuming phase of network modelling. A properly configured network model should incorporate at least the following features: the possibility to perform comprehensive analyses of the existing system functioning as well as analyses of the system modernization and extension variants in order to optimize technical solutions.

Wizualizacja sieci semantycznej w mapie pojęć umożliwia interaktywną nawigację umożliwiającą zarówno przeglądanie struktury, jak i analizę szczegółów w celu filtrowania danych w czasie rzeczywistym. Tworzone systemy z mapą pojęć mogą potencjalnie stanowić użyteczne rozwiązanie wspomagające kadrę kierowniczą w pozyskiwaniu potrzebnych i unikatowych informacji ekonomicznych. Wymaga to jednak przeprowadzenia badań. Artykuł jest czwartym i ostatnim z cyklu "Nowe oblicza kartografii". Rozwinięto w nim i uszczegółowiono zagadnienia dotyczące znaczenia baz danych geograficznych w kartografii.
The article is the fourth and last of a 'New faces of cartography' series. It develops and discusses in detail the issue of map production using geographical databases. Special attention is paid to a common differentiation between databases built according to a Digital Landscape Model (DLM) and Digital Cartographic Model (DCM). The author discusses the benefits of modern database technologies for map production and the impact of their structure on the level of difficulty of cartographic data visualization. The article presents two examples, which illustrate the significance and reality of the process of producing maps from databases. The first is the Topographical Database, which together with the military VMap database exemplifies broad application of database technologies in Polish geodesy and cartographic services. In both cases a typical GIS database with data recorded in a relative database is at the input of the map production process. A system elaborated and used in PPWK (Polish Cartographic Publishing House) is another example of a large scale application of a GIS database. At the basis of the system there is a relational database managed from the level of ArcGIS software and a number of additional original applications using their own GIS Navigo components. The article suggests that cartographic skill should nowadays be accompanied with a basic knowledge of IT and GIS technology. At the same time a cartographer takes on a new role - of the one who defines and cooperates during the process of database creation, so that its structure ensures a correct cartographic interpretation of the data, using various media and cartographic presentation methods.

The aim of the article is to draw attention to the new phenomenon of neocartography and its growing popularity. Many new and innovative examples of the usage of cartography come from outside the circle of cartographers and map producers. The term "neocartography" is used with reference to map makers without traditional cartographic education. This kind of cartographic productions most frequently use the data and software licensed by Free Open Software. The availability of data and tools allows neocartogra-phers to create their own maps and present "whatever they want however they want", often breaking the rules of traditional cartography. One of the examples of this area of research and activity is social media cartography, in which the users of internet services, create and update internet maps and geoinformational services by themselves, in compliance to the idea of Web 2.0. The popularity and significance of social media cartography has been noted by the biggest commercial companies, which are trying to use it. These trends have also been observed by International Cartographic Association (ICA), which in 2011 established the new Commission on Neocartography. Practical examples of using Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) show that these solutions are especially interesting in situations when the time of reaction and updating is essential, e.g. in crisis management, when social commitment of users allows to acquire current and reliable data of spatial reference. Neocartography also means new non-standard forms of presentation which, created by simple users or software designers, allow to benefit from interactivity and new possibilities of multimedia, such as 3D presentation and computer animation. In the light of the swift development of neocartography it becomes necessary to design solutions which would ensure adequate usage of cartographic methodology and good cartographic practice. In this context, the tasks of a professional cartographer as a moderator of the work of neocartographers would include such issues as: defining patterns of geocom-positon, creating graphic templates, designing rules of data harmonization, facilitating the selection of cartographic presentation methods, map design control, as well as education and promotion of cartographic methodology.
