    This article discusses the phenomenon of reusing of ancient rock art iconography in modern art on the example of the artworks of Canadian Cree visual artist Jane Ash Poitras. To understand the role the rock art plays in the collages of J.A. Poitras, the first part of the paper is focused on the Indigenous perspective, which provides the clue to reading complexity of history and contemporary art of the First Nations in Canada. Then the painting Shaman never die V is thoroughly analyzed. It is showed that rock art motifs used in this artwork had been very carefully selected and the meanings they evoke significantly go in pair with wider ideas related to traumatic history of Indigenous Canadians as well as ideas related to persistence of Indigenous spirituality symbolized by the image of shaman.

    Opis:
    In addition to the positive borderline effect, which is often presented in the literature, this text presents the dilemmas and tragedies of the individual, family and community, taking place on the border of cultures, religions and ethnicities. The methodological basis is the concept of the interpretation of the borderland and multi-range identity, through which I read and describe the fate of Emilia Moszczańska Kosiur Niewęgłowska presented by Grzegorz Dżus in the book “Banderowka”, published in 2020. The narration of the book’s main character allowed for presenting the process of shaping the family, individual and social identity. In this process, in the face of experiencing suspicion, helplessness, fear and humiliation, such questions dominate as: Who am I? Who am I to be? How am I to be? The author draws attention to the problem of the narrator’s internal dialogue, points to its value in the educational and humanistic context. He emphasizes how difficult but important, in the process of shaping identity, is the mediation of three areas of identity and the liberating oneself from the stigma of alienation experienced from all sides.
    Obok pozytywnego efektu pogranicza, który jest częściej w literaturze przedmiotu prezentowany, w niniejszym tekście ukazane są dylematy i dramaty jednostki, rodziny i społeczności funkcjonującej na pograniczu kultur etniczno-wyznaniowych. Podstawę metodologiczną stanowi koncepcja interpretacji pogranicza i wielozakresowej tożsamości, poprzez którą odczytuję trajektorię losu Pani Emilii Moszczańskiej Kosiur Niewęgłowskiej przedstawionej przez Grzegorza Dżusa w książce z 2020 roku Banderowka. Narracja bohaterki pozwoliła przedstawić proces kształtowania się tożsamości rodzinnej, jednostkowej i społecznej, w którym dominowały ustawicznie pytania: kim jestem, kim być, jak być, wobec doświadczania podejrzliwości, bezsilności, lęków i upokorzenia. Autor zwraca uwagę na problem dialogu wewnętrznego narratorki, wskazuje na jego wartość w kontekście edukacyjnym i humanistycznym, podkreśla, jak trudna, ale istotna w procesie kształtującej się tożsamości jest mediacja trzech zakresów tożsamości, wyzwalania się ze stygmatu obcości doświadczanego ze wszystkich stron.

    Being a result from the 2008/9 research into interpretation of Aboriginal literature within Polish readerships, the article explores ways in which Indigenous characters are imagined and understood by Polish readers. Also, given that literatures and their characters are usually looked throughout the readers’ schemata and memory scans, it shows the dominant ways in which the Polish readers interpret and communicate with some of those characters.

    Development of Education for Indigenous Minorities in Alaska The article deals with the issue of the relation between education and processes of the development of ethnic identity of indigenous minorities in Alaska. Particular emphasis was placed on reconstructing the educational practices and policy that is being implemented for indigenous minorities within the school system (especially assimilation, discrimination and revitalisation of ethnic identity). An attempt was made at examining the relationship between schooling, socialisation, language policy, and the development of aboriginal minorities in Alaska.

    The article aims to analyze the Mashpee Wampanoag Nation’s fight for recognition as a tribe and the recent attempts by the US federal government to take their land out of trust. Mashpee’s 1977-1978 lost court case was famously described by James Clifford in a chapter of his book, The Predicament of Culture (1988). The article looks at the continuation of their legal struggle, their recognition as a tribe under the Code of Federal Regulations in 2007 and their recent legal battle to keep their lands. Mashpee’s case is illustrative of the changes in the general perspective of tribal nations’ identities and histories which have taken place in the United States since the 1970s, as reflected in the legal documents analyzed. It also shows that the change in perspective and law itself does not necessarily guarantee sovereignty. Thus, the article takes a legal anthropological approach to the subject.
    Artykuł analizuje walkę narodu Mashpee Wampanoag o uznanie go jako plemienia przez państwo oraz ostatnie prób rządu federalnego USA, aby odebrać im ziemię. Sprawa sądowa Mashpee z lat 1977-1978, którą przegrali, została opisana przez Jamesa Clifforda w jednym z rozdziałów jego znanej książki The Predicament of Culture (1988; wyd. polskie Kłopoty z kulturą 2000). W tekście tym omówiona jest dalsza walka prawna o rzeczone uznanie ich za plemię przez rząd federalny w 2007 roku zgodnie z Kodeksem Przepisów Federalnych, oraz trwająca batalia prawna o zachowanie swoich ziem. Przypadek plemienia Mashpee obrazuje zmianę w postrzeganiu tożsamości i historii narodów plemiennych,jaka zaszła w USA od końca lat siedemdziesiątych XX wieku. Znajduje ona swoje odzwierciedlenie w analizowanych dokumentach prawnych. Artykuł pokazuje również, że same transformacje w postrzeganiu tożsamości i wynikające z nich zmiany prawne niekoniecznie gwarantują suwerenność rdzennych narodów. Zatem przedsięwzięcie to podchodzi do zagadnienia podmiotowości i statusu prawnego tych grup z perspektywy antropologii prawa.

    Global warming is a fact. The reason for this can only be a guess. There are hypotheses claiming that the climate changes are consequences of human activities. Other hypotheses say that such occurrences appear regularly every few thousand years. As early as the beginning of the twentieth century some scientists noticed indicators of the growth of the global average temperature. Regardless of the reason global warming is observable mostly in polar areas. Nowadays about four million people live in the Arctic including native inhabitants. Global warming impacts on all of these including indigenous peoples of the Arctic whose cultural identities have always been related to nature. They have always lived in harmony together with nature, they have been a part of it and have never tried to fight against it. A changing climate can make them give up the way their ancestors used to live. Afterwards it can cause the disappearance of their languages and cultures that languages are parts of. Besides for many decades all indigenous people had been thought to be at a lower development level than new arrivals so today almost all languages spoken by indigenous peoples of the Arctic are endangered. All indigenous peoples of the Arctic have common points in their histories like deprivation of lands and suppression of languages and traditions. Most of their ancient customs and religions are forgotten but there are many material marks that are important for future generations. It is very important to preserve the marks and the knowledge of their languages because the value of them is priceless. Today native inhabitants of the Arctic live in countries with various law regulations so their situation is different in each country. Some of them have some autonomy, but others still seek it.
