The revision of classification methodologies for determination of soil expansivity revealed that parameters most frequently used for this purpose are: the liquid limit, plasticity index and swelling parameters which also predominate in older systems of expansive soil assessment, regarded as classical. Seventy-nine soil samples, including Neogene clays and glaciall tills from Central Poland, with a wide range of plasticity were examined for a comparative analysis of soil expansivity with a use of eight empirical methods. The study revealed that Neogene clays are mostly highly and very highly expansive, while glacial tills exhibit low to medium expansivity. Compared to classifications considering soil mineralogy indicators, those correlated solely to Atterberg limits and related parameters were found to overestimate soil expansivity. It is evident that the classifications are in better agreement for glacial tills than for clays. The comparison of mineral composition measured and predicted from swelling tests yielded consistent results.

In this paper we show upper bounds for the sum and the product of the lower domination parameters and the chromatic index of a graph. We also present some families of graphs for which these upper bounds are achieved. Next, we give a lower bound for the sum of the upper domination parameters and the chromatic index. This lower bound is a function of the number of vertices of a graph and a new graph parameter which is defined here. In this case we also characterize graphs for which a respective equality holds.

Perennial ryegrass is one of the most valuable pasture grasses. The species is recommended for sodding various types of land in Poland due to its fast growth and the ability to produce large numbers of vegetative shoots. Seedling emergence and biomass yield are largely determined by seed quality. This study analyzes the correlations between the basic physical properties of seeds of perennial ryegrass cv. Maja and their germination capacity. The basic dimensions (length, width and thickness) and mass of each of the 150 seeds were determined, and their arithmetic mean diameter, geometric mean diameter, aspect ratio, sphericity index and density were calculated. The seeds were germinated for 14 days, and the results were recorded daily, which enabled to determine germination time for each seed. The relationships between the evaluated parameters were determined by the Student’s t-test for independent samples and correlation analysis. The analyzed physical properties of seeds had no significant effect on the germination rate index. Germinated and non-germinated seeds differed significantly in width, length and arithmetic mean diameter, but they should not be sorted based on their plumpness to improve the quality of seed material because it could lead to a high loss of viable seeds.

This study presents the hydrochemical composition of groundwater under long-term irrigation of Wonji plain (Ethiopia) and its quality status for drinking purpose. Groundwater samples were collected from 30 groundwater monitoring tube wells installed at different parts of the sugarcane plantation and then analysed for the major physico-chemical quality parameters (pH, EC, major cations and anions) following standard test procedures. The status of groundwater for drinking was compared with WHO and other quality standards. Analytical analysis results indicated that majority of the considered quality parameters are rated above the prescribed tolerable limits for drinking set by WHO. About 97% of the water samples has water quality index in the range of very poor to unfit for drinking. The contamination index is in the ranges of low (–1.0) to high (3.6). In general, the groundwater of the area is unsuitable for human consumption without proper treatment such as boiling, chlorination, filtering, distillation, desalinaization, defluoridation, deionization, demineralization (ionexchange) and membrane processes. Since the TDS concentration is relatively small (<2000 ppm), demineralization process alone can be sufficient to bring the water to an acceptable level.

Introduction: Physical inactivity is an important contributor to obesity epidemic. In Nigeria, public secondary school teachers are prone to sedentary lifestyle. This study determined physical activity parameters and Body mass index (BMI) among public secondary school teachers in Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State. It also compared physical activity parameters and BMI between male and female teachers. Materials and methods: This study is a cross sectional survey and 101 (65 females and 36 males) public secondary school teachers participated. Physical activity parameters (number of steps, distance covered and energy expenditure) were assessed using pedometer while the Body Mass Index (BMI) was computed from participant’s height and weight. Data were analyzed using descriptive (percentage, mean, standard deviation) and inferential (Independent ‘t’ test and Pearson product moment correlation coefficient) statistics. Alpha level was set at p<0. 05.

This study aims to assess the water quality and determine the pollution index of the Bedadung River in the urban-area segment of Jember Regency, East Java. The sampling in the urban segment of Jember was conducted in May 2019 at five different locations, namely Slamet Riyadi Street, Mastrip Street, Bengawan Solo Street, Sumatra Street, and Imam Bonjol Street. The pollution index assessment refers to the Decree of the State Minister for the Environment of Indonesia Republic number 115 of 2003. The analysis showed that the parameters of TDS, TSS, pH, COD, BOD, NH3-N, Co, Cd, Cu, Zn, H2S, Cl–, SO4, oil and fats, MBAS, NO2-N, Fe, Pb, F, Cl2, NO3-N, phenol, and As did not exceed the quality standards. The parameters PO4, CN, total coliform, and faecal coliform were found to breach the quality standards at the 5 water sampling points. Total coliform and faecal coliform were the dominant pollutants in this segment. Therefore, the parameters of PO4, total coliform, and faecal coliform were considered as indicators of pollution arising from domestic and agricultural activities. The pollution index values for the five sampling locations ranged from 7.21 to 8.23. These scores indicate that the Bedadung River section that passes through the urban segment in Jember is classified as being in the moderately polluted category. This preliminary rapid assessment is therefore one of the considerations for the management of water quality in the Bedadung River section that passes through the urban area of Jember.

In this paper we show the results of a study of the effects of high-temperature stress annealing in nitrogen on the refraction index of SiO2 layers and electrical properties in metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) devices. We have experimentally characterized the dependence of the reduced effective contact potential difference (ECPD), the effective oxide charge density (Neff), and the mid-gap interface trap density (Dit) on the annealing conditions. Subsequently, we have correlated such properties with the dependence of the refraction index and oxide stress on the annealing conditions and silicon dioxide thickness. Also, the dependence of mechanical stress in the Si-SiO2 system on the oxidation and annealing conditions has been experimentally determined. We consider the contributions of the thermal-relaxation and nitrogen incorporation processes in determining changes in the SiO2 layer refractive index and the electrical properties with annealing time. This description is consistent with other annealing studies carried out in argon, where only the thermal relaxation process is present.

Rivers are considered the most important sources of surface water on Earth. They are play a significant role in all human activities and the quality of river water is needed. Therefore, the importance of the water quality index is arising through providing data base about quality of the water source, and explain the change in the water quality over a period of time continually. This study involved determination of physicochemical and biological parameters of Lower Zab river in Kirkuk city at two different points. The objectives of the study are to assess the present water quality, through analysis of some selected water quality parameters like pH, TDS, BOD, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, EC, alkalinity, and salinity etc. and to compare the results with the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment and National Sanitation Foundation Water Quality Indices. Raw water samples were collected from the Lower Zab river twice a month by one sample every 15 days from each station. The water quality data include 16 different parameters. Tests were carried out following the American Public Health Association standard methods. The results show that all parameters values were within the standards of drinking water proposed by the CCME standards and Iraqi standards or the World Health Organization standards for drinking purpose, except turbidity, DO, nitrate, calcium, which were mostly higher than the standards and sometimes BOD and potassium. The results of WQI showed that the water quality at LZ3 station is lower than LZ2 station due to the polluting activity of the Lower Zab river. Furthermore, for the years 2014, 2015, and 2016, the water quality was degraded due to the ISIS war. Also, it was noted in the 2013 year that the water quality degraded more in fall and winter seasons due to that the earth has exposed to the long-dried season and then suddenly exposed to a high rainfall season which in turns leads to increase some parameters very high (i.e. turbidity). Finally, the Lower Zab river water cannot be use for drinking directly. However, a pretreatment is needed before the drinking use.

A good water quality is essential to sustaining the life of the organisms. The determination of water quality is needed as a direction to monitoring the water pollution. The purpose of this study is to examine the quality of the water and to determine the water pollution index based on the physicochemical parameters in Mimika waters, Indonesia. The sampling of water quality was carried out in October 2016 at six stations (Moga, Puriri, Inaoga, Keakwa, Atuka and Pomako waters). Then, the results were compared with the standard of sea water quality for biota marine based on the Decree of the Minister of Environment No. 51 year 2004. This study showed that the physicochemical parameters of the waters, such as water turbidity, BOD, NH3 and heavy metals (Hg, As, Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, Ni and Cr), are still appropriate to the biota marine in all study stations. However, there is a parameter for which the quality standards were exceed in all locations, including water salinity for coral and seagrass, NO3, PO4 and H2S. The result of pollution index calculation at coastal waters Mimika are classified as lightly polluted (Keakwa and Pomako waters), and moderately polluted (Moga, Puriri, Inaoga and Atuka waters) with the pollution index values of 3.51 to 6.95. It is important to notice that the parameters of quality standards which had been exceed such as NO3, PO4 and H2S are the environmental parameter for nutrient elements and can trigger eutrophication in the waters.

W artykule przedstawiono subiektywną identyfikację zagrożeń na stanowiskach pracy geodety (studium przypadku) na przykładzie wybranych przedsiębiorstw. Różnią się one przede wszystkim rodzajem wykonywanych prac i tym samym bagażem doświadczeń zatrudnionych osób, zebranym na przestrzeni wielu lat pracy w geodezji. Do identyfikacji zagrożeń posłużyła lista kontrolna w postaci anonimowej ankiety. Zidentyfikowano najważniejsze zagrożenia występujące w terenie i na stanowisku pracy biurowej oraz zaproponowano działania profilaktyczne w celu zminimalizowania wpływu tych zagrożeń na poziom bezpieczeństwa pracy. Zbadano także poziom obciążenia cieplnego pracowników poprzez symulację pomiarów parametrów mikroklimatu w terenie i wyznaczenie wartości WBGT oraz odniesienie ich do wartości normatywnych.
The article presents the subjective identification of hazards at workstations geodesist(case study) on the example of selected enterprises. They differ primarily in the type of work performed and, therefore, in the experience of the employed people, collected over many years of work in geodesy. For hazard identification served checklist in the form of an anonymous survey. The most important threats occurring in the field and at the office workplace were identified and preventive measures were proposed to minimize the impact of these hazards on the level of work safety. The level of heat load of employees was also examined by simulating the measurements of microclimate parameters in the field and determining the WBGT value and referring them to the normative values.

The Gait Variability Index (GVI) summarizes overall gait quality, taking into account spatiotemporal parameters from a 3-dimensional gait analysis. However, there are no studies evaluating changes in gait patterns after stroke, based on the GVI. The study was designed to assess usefulness of the GVI for evaluation of gait pathology in subjects with stroke, compared to healthy individuals. Methods: Spatiotemporal gait parameters were examined in a group of 50 subjects at a chronic stage post-stroke and in 50 healthy controls. The GVI was calculated based on the 9 spatiotemporal data. Results: The findings show statistically significant differences between the values of the GVI for paretic and non-paretic limbs ( p < 0.001). Higher values of the index were identified in the case of non-paretic limb: 80.74 vs. 76.32. The GVI scores were decreased for both paretic and non-paretic limbs, compared to the controls – p < 0.001. Conclusions: The GDI score seems to be a viable tool for quantifying changes in gait pattern during evaluation of subjects with chronic post-stroke hemiparesis. Further studies should be conducted to validate the use of GVI in the post-stroke population.

Opis:
A family of biodegradable aliphatic-aromatic co-polyesters (BAAC) was prepared by polycondensation in the melt. The synthesis was carried out with the addition of a small amount of alkaline metals salts which produced the effect of a distinctly improved colour of the polyesters as registered in the L*, a*, b* system. The yellow index of the tested samples was calculated from the chromaticity coordinates X, Y, Z. The colour could have been further improved by an exposure to UV radiation. No change was observed in the average molecular mass of the tested co-polyesters as result of the exposure, while an insignificant drop occurred of the inherent viscosity.
Metodą polikondensacji w stanie stopionym otrzymano grupę biodegradowalnych kopoliestrów alifatyczno-aromatycznych (BAAC). Syntezę prowadzono z udziałem niewielkiej ilości soli metali alkalicznych otrzymując znaczną poprawę barwy kopoliestrów rejestrowaną w systemie L*, a*, b. Na podstawie współrzędnych trójchromatycznych X, Y, Z, obliczono indeks żółtości badanych próbek. Dodatkową poprawę barwy uzyskano naświetlając próbki polimerów promieniowaniem UV. Po naświetlaniu nie stwierdzono zmian w średnich masach molowych badanych kopoliestrów, stwierdzono natomiast niewielkie spadki wartości lepkości inherętnej.

Water quality index (WQI) is a mathematical tool used to transform large quantities of water quality data into a single number which present water quality level. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the quality of Koudiat Medouar Dam in Batna (Algeria) to assess its suitability for drinking purposes. Samples were assessed for ten (10) physicochemical settings namely pH, electrical conductivity, total hardness, nitrate, sulphate, chloride, calcium, magnesium, dissolved oxygen and turbidity. The calculation of WQI was done via weighted arithmetic index method. The WQI values ranged from 99.097 to 174.92 during 2015. It reflected that the water samples were in February in the range of very poor quality and ranged to be in unsuitable for drinking rang in the all other months. The WQI of the present study reveals dam water is contaminated and not suitable for drinking purpose without giving treatment.
Indeks jakości wody (WQI) jest matematycznym narzędziem używanym do transformacji dużej liczby danych o jakości wody w jedną liczbę, która charakteryzuje poziom jakości wody. Celem przedstawionych badań było określenie jakości wody w zbiorniku zaporowym Koudiat Medouar w Batna (Algieria), aby ustalić jej przydatność do celów spożywczych. W próbkach oceniano 10 parametrów fizycznych i chemicznych: pH, przewodność elektrolityczną, całkowitą twardość, stężenie azotanów, siarczanów, chlorków, wapnia, magnezu, rozpuszczonego tlenu i mętność. Obliczenia indeksu WQI wykonano metodą ważonego indeksu arytmetycznego. Wartości WQI zmieniały się od 99,097 do 174,92 w 2015 r. W lutym próbki wody cechowała bardzo zła jakość, a w pozostałych miesiącach woda nie nadawała się do picia. Indeks ustalony w niniejszych badaniach dowodzi, że woda w zbiorniku zaporowym jest zanieczyszczona i nie nadaje się do celów spożywczych bez uprzedniego uzdatniania.

Opis:
This paper presents a new approach which makes it possible to take into account seakeeping qualities of ship in the preliminary stage of its design. The presented concept is based on representing ship’s behaviour in waves by means of the so called operational effectiveness index. Presented values of the index were calculated for a broad range of design parameters. On this basis were elaborated analytical functions which approximate the index depending on ship design parameters. Also, example approximations of the index calculated by using artificial neural networks, are attached. The presented approach may find application to ship preliminary design problems as well as in ship service stage to assess sea-keeping performance of a ship before its departure to sea.

Opis:
Petrophysical parameters such as porosity and permeability and bulk density are input data for modeling hydrocarbon flow in reservoirs with the use of Eclipse® program (Schlumberger). The modeling is preceded by preliminary works comprising division of reservoir into hydraulic (flow) units, HU, and their characterization by geometrical and geological factors. Flow Zone Index, FZI, is a factor enabling easier description of movement of media in pore space only on the basis of combination of permeability and porosity. Then, HUs are determined on the basis of FZIs. The tested gas deposit belonged to a group of typical Miocene reservoirs from the Polish part of the Carpathian Foredeep. In this deposit, gas accumulations are related to deltaic sediments represented by sandstone and mudstone layers of various thickness, and heterolites with claystone, mudstone and sandstone intercalations. In the case of this deposit, the wealth of laboratory data made possible credible differentiation of FZI and HU. The tested methodology can also be applied to investigations of reservoirs bearing potable, mineral and geothermal water as well as those used for storage of sequestrated carbon dioxide.
