The quality of life is an interdisciplinary issue. Hence, in Polish social sciences there are many different definitions for this term, which has its consequences in research. Nowadays, the topic of life quality is being analyzed through its objective and subjective indexes. The article presents results of various research on mass media usage in the context of spending free time and using modern information and communication technologies (ICT), since both these trends have dominated the field of analyzing objective and subjective dimension of life quality of Poles when it comes to using media. Unfortunately, using mass media is not regarded in research as one of the main indexes for life quality and its full utilization requires a correction of meaning and methodology.

Opis:
In this paper, an image encryption technique using singular value decomposition (SVD) and discrete cosine Stockwell transform (DCST) is proposed. The original source image is encrypted using bands of DCST along with the SVD decomposed images. The number of bands in DCST, parameters used to mask the singular values, the way of permutation used to shuffle the values of SVD transformed images and the way of arrangement of SVD matrices are used as encryption keys. It is necessary to have correct knowledge of all the keys along with their respective values, for correct decryption of encrypted images. The robustness and the quality measurement of proposed work are analyzed by comparing it with some existing works.

In this paper the method of creating indices for description leaf blade roundness and asymmetry, based on division of the leaf into 10 equal parts perpendicularly to the long axis was proposed. Along each division line the distance between the midrib and the leaf edge was measured separately for the left and right site of the blade. Sum of all 18 measurements, 9 on each side, may be treated as an index of the roundness of the leaf blade. Differences between sums of all measurements of the left and right leaf site could be a base for calculations of various asymmetry indices, including indicators of fluctuating asymmetry. Indices obtained by this method are quite sensitive and may be analysed using standard statistical methods.

Opis:
A metrological verification of a high precision digital multimeter was made by the laboratory of calibration of programmable electrical multifunction instruments of the National Institute of Metrological Research (INRIM) in order to verify its accuracy and stability. The instrument had been tested for a period of six months for five low-frequency electrical quantities (DC and AC Voltage and Current and DC Resistance). Its stability and precision were compared with the accuracy specifications of the manufacturer. As a new approach, a performance index of the DMM was introduced and evaluated for each examined measurement point. The DMM showed a satisfactory agreement with its specifications to be considered at the level of other top-class DMMs and even better in some measurements points.

This paper focuses on the measurement of information society. The aim of this paper is twofold. The first objective is to present a coherent picture of measurement methods for information society. The second aim of the paper is to show measurement findings of information society in selected countries – especially Poland. First, the paper presents available methods of information society measurement and a core set of internationally agreed information society indicators. Second, the measurement of information society was performed with the application of three methods – measuring the influence of ICT on GDP, measuring the ICT Development Index and measuring the Networked Readiness Index. Finally, a discussion was undertaken in order to establish a framework for the development of information society’s quantitative measurement methods.

Local government units in Poland are obliged to improve the quality of life of their inhabitants concerning rules of sustainable development. The study described in the article is intended to measure the relative efficiency of management including examination of the relationship between various inputs and outputs in local government units. The analysis in the paper shows efficiency differences between local governments in comparison with sub-region leaders (group frontiers) and region leaders (meta-frontiers). The division into sub-regions and regions was made according to NUTS classification. The measurement of inputs and outputs in local government management units was based on indicators of sustainable development from SAS (Local Government Research System) database. Apart from static comparison (for a particular year) the main purpose of the article is to show changes of efficiency in 5 years horizon with application of dynamic meta-frontier approach. The outcome of the analysis made it possible to indicate some reference points (benchmarks), which may contribute to improve the efficiency of management in the local government units in Poland under research. The concepts delivered in the paper are employed for the purpose of assessing growth performance of local governments using a data set covering 128 cities in period 2006-2010.

Research work on the new assessment of environmental indicators using equipment from the PEMS group (Portable Emission Measurement Systems) with motor vehicles is being developed. Due to the miniaturization of equipment, there are new measurement possibilities for more and more numerous groups of vehicles, including two-wheelers. The article presents the research and a summary of the results of a moped equipped with a two-stroke engine, approved in accordance with the Euro 3 standard. The research object is mainly used for driving in urban traffic. Therefore, the research route was created as the first communication frame in the Poznań agglomeration. In the analysis of the results, the author’s M toxicity index was proposed, which is based on the assumption that CO2 emission is a measure of the correctness of the combustion process. The equipment from the PEMS-AxionR/S+ group, characterized by small dimensions and low weight, was used to determine the actual motion parameters and the emission of toxic compounds. In the analysis of the measurement results, dimensionless indicators of toxicity M of gaseous compounds were determined and a comparative analysis was made with the values of other objects obtained in the course of previous research (motorcycle, passenger car, off-road vehicle, hybrid bus and agricultural tractor). Due to the engine design (two-stroke type), the worst environmental indicators were obtained for CO and HC compared to other tested vehicles.

Odor measurement is a crucial element of odor management and regulation. In Japan, nationwide interlaboratory evaluation of olfactometry using a variety of test odorants started in 2002. In the interlaboratory tests, odor index, a sensory index of odor determined by the triangular odor bag method, is measured. In 2016, interlaboratory evaluation method of olfactometry was improved. Isoamyl acetate with a concentration of 50 ppm was used as a test odor, and a total of 128 olfactometry laboratories participated in the test. In this method, test results of 11 ‘excellent qualified laboratories’ designated by the Japan Association on Odor Environment (JAOE) were used to determine reference value and repeatability and reproducibility standard deviations of odor index. On the bases of these statistical values, measurement results of each laboratory were evaluated, including trueness and precision. Among 127 evaluated laboratories, 87 laboratories (68%) conformed to both trueness and precision criteria. In the case of ‘qualified odor measurement laboratories’ designated by the JAOE, 53 out of 68 laboratories (78%) conformed to both criteria. The qualified odor measurement laboratories registration system of the JAOE contributes to the improvement of the quality of olfactometry laboratories and the reliability of odor measurement in Japan.

This study demonstrates utilization of Sense and Respond method for developing operations within housing markets by Critical Factor Index (CFI) having influence even on the strategic business performance. CFIs of knowledge intensive businesses can be measured and dynamically developed by Sense & Respond philosophy [1]. The purpose is to evaluate operative business performance in two quite different cases within quite big real estate businesses in Finland. For example, relationships with the customers, processes and possibilities for growth internally by different groups of respondents, 'hosting', 'management' and 'rent', were compared between the cases. One case company has a lot of more social housing compared to another. The work aims at finding out and understanding similarities and differences in business processes by Balanced Score Card (BSC) and by much more operations oriented OP questionnaires, and by deeper interviews in the case companies as well. BSC questionnaire has been supported by an important part of trust related factors as well. We could find similarities like: openness, customer, communication between different departments and hierarchy levels, utilizing different types of organizing systems; adaptation to knowledge and technology, utilizing different types of organizing systems. A new method for dynamic resource allocations in the operative processes in housing, especially in renting, where the customers move from one apartment to another one, has been proposed, it was validated and verified by weak and semi strong market tests in two quite big but different case companies. The preliminary but promising findings can be applicable for the whole market.

Two potato cultivars, sprayed and nonsprayed with fungicides, were evaluated to determine the association of late blight (caused by Phytophtora infestans) and radiometric leaf reflectance to disease development. Spectral radiance measurements were taken with CIMEL CE3132 luminancemeter in the visible (450 nm, 550 nm and 650 nm) and near-infrared (850 nm) range of the electromagnetic spectrum. The measurements were taken at two view zenithal angles: ɸv= 0° (at nadir) and ɸv = 50°. Six vegetative indices based on these measurements were used to detect differences between sprayed and nonsprayed plants. Vegetation indices based on the reflectance measurement enable to distinguish infected potato plants from noninfected plants. Among the vegetation indices used in this studies the best indicators of disease were NIR/RED and ELAI. Results of our study show that for Mila cultivar oblique viewing may be more effective then nadir viewing (perpendicular to the ground surface) for distinguishing between plants infested at different degree.
Opracowanie technik teledetekcyjnych służących do wykrywania i obserwacji rozwoju chorób roślin wymaga poznania ich właściwości spektralnych. Służą temu polowe pomiary spektralne roślin, których celem jest stwierdzenie różnic w ilości pochłanianego i odbijanego promieniowania słonecznego przez rośliny chore i zdrowe. Zastosowanie wskaźników wegetacyjnych, czyli porównanie od bicia fal elektromagnetycznych o różnych długościach od tego samego obiektu w tym samym czasie, może stanowić lepszą podstawę do opisu jego charakterystyki spektralnej niż pomiary odbicia każdej z fal analizowane oddzielnie. Celem badań było stwierdzenie, który ze wskaźników wegetacyjnych obliczonych na podstawie zmierzonych danych spektralnych najbardziej nadaje się do wykrycia zróżnicowania między zdrowymi i chorymi roślinami ziemniaka. Ponadto podjęto próbę uzyskania odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy pomiary wykonywane pod kątem innym niż 0° umożliwiają łatwiejsze zidentyfikowanie chorych roślin.

The Thai automotive industry has been ranked one of the top ten of the Thai export products for several years. Effective supply chain management has become a key strategy for the industry to stay competitive. Performance measurement has thus become a crucial issue in automotive supply chains. The purpose of the research is to gain insight into the relevant performance attributes that affect the automotive supply chains. The critical factor indexes (CFIs) are calculated in order to determine which of the performance attributes are considered to be the strength and which ones need to be specially focused, so that precautions could be made in developing the performance measurement system. Based on the CFIs, companies in Thai automotive supply chains can support their decision making under scarce resources with valid data. A set of questionnaires with different performance attributes is used comprising of two separate parts, one intended for the first tier supplier companies and the other for the automakers. Each performance attribute in the questionnaires is assessed on how important the company sees them from their perspective, how well the tasks measured by each performance attribute have been carried out in their companies, how they see themselves compared to their competitors, and how they see each performance attribute developing compared to the situation 1 to 2 years before. The results provide a guideline to the companies in Thai automotive supply chains to measure the right performance attributes for making the right decision in a competitive environment.

Wielokrotny pomiar statusu osób na rynku pracy z wykorzystaniem kwestionariusza statystycznego może posłużyć do zastosowania metod ilościowych do oceny jego jakości. W celu oceny jakości wyników badania stosuje się m.in. metody powtórnego, a także wielokrotnego pomiaru na wybranej próbie losowej. Na podstawie danych uzyskanych z Narodowego Spisu Powszechnego Ludności i Mieszkań przeprowadzonego w 2011 r. (NSP 2011), zaprezentowano zastosowanie współczynnika zgodności Cohena oraz analizy klasy ukrytej do oceny jakości klasyfikowania osoby na rynku pracy. Pytania kwestionariusza spisowego pozwoliły na ocenę statusu osób na rynku pracy zgodnie z rekomendacją Międzynarodowej Organizacji Pracy (MOP) i samooceny respondenta. W artykule przedstawiono tylko kwestię zgodności wyników uzyskanych w tych ujęciach w części spisu opartej na próbie losowej, pomijając wiele innych zagadnień dotyczących błędów losowych i nielosowych.
Multimeasurement of the person’s labour market status based on the statistical questionnaire may be used for the assessment of its quality with quantitative methods. In order to evaluate the measurement quality we employ among others, remeasurement or multiple measurements for a random sample of units. Based on the data from the National Population and Housing Census 2011, this article presents appliance of the Cohen’s coefficient of contingency and Latent Class Analysis for the assessment of respondent’s labour force classification. The questions in the census questionnaire enable the evaluation of persons’ labour market status according to International Labour Organisation (ILO) recommendation as well as give an opportunity to respondent’s self-assessment. The article focuses on the issue of results’ consistency obtained from these two types of information in the part of the Census based on a random sample. Many other aspects relating to random and non-random errors were omitted in the research.

Insole material is an important factor determining the hygienic properties of shoes. It has a significant impact on health and comfort while wearing them. In this paper, the authors describe a scenario of three insole materials: flank leather, cellulose material and composite leather. Quantitative research was done using five upper materials: calfskin full and top grain leather, “buffalo” bovine leather, a soft type of grain leather, and aniline veal skin type “cool”. Qualitative analysis was performed using 3D knitted fabrics as lining. The statistical significance of the differences obtained within the groups analysed is that they prove the impact of insole material on comfort.
Materiały wykorzystywane na podpodeszwy w sposób znaczący wpływają na walory higieniczne obuwia. Przekłada się to jednocześnie na komfort jego użytkowania, a tym samym uwydatniają się jego aspekty zdrowotne. W pracy przedstawiono studium trzech rodzajów materiałów podpodeszwowych, stanowiących elementy składowe obuwia skórzanego: materiał celulozowy, skórę naturalną – bok blankowy oraz wtórną skórę podpodeszwową. Do badań wykorzystano materiały wierzchnie wykonane z pięciu rodzajów skór bydlęcych, takich jak: boks, nubuk, buffalo, bukat oraz skóra naturalna cielęca. Porównania jakościowego w zakresie wpływu zastosowanej podeszwy na odczucie komfortu użytkowania gotowego obuwia dokonano w obrębie podszewek wykonanych z dzianin dystansowych. Istotność statystyczna uzyskanych wyników potwierdziła wpływ rodzaju zastosowanej podeszwy na wartości współczynnika dyskomfortu uzyskanego z badań symulacyjnych na uczestnikach.
