    Prison sentence used in Polish penal system is one of the most widely criticised punishments used for criminals. The convicted are sent into prisons or detention centres, which makes them (the incarcerated) even more vulnerable to committing a crime due to their isolation and solitary confinement. In this way, a distinct subculture is created. It is conditioned by many factors which determine its size, form, norms and rules enforced by the prisoners. The phenomenon of prison subculture causes a wide range of negative consequences, e.g. self-aggression; aggression towards other inmates, prison officers, or even family; mental or physical abuse; mental or sexual disorders. Such situations have a negative influence on the process of resocialisation, because they are destructive for the personality of a prisoner, especially for a juvenile delinquent as his/her decision making possibilities related to themselves are limited. Therefore, one might venture to say that the bigger the influence of subculture norms and rules, the more disturbed the process of resocialisation.

    Objectives The aim of the study was to analyze the determinants of prison inmates’ personal quality of life (PQoL). Material and Methods Three hundred ninety men imprisoned in penitentiary institutions were assessed. Data were collected by means of the the Sense of Quality of Life Questionnaire, the General Self-Esteem Scale, the Social Support Scale, the Resiliency Assessment Scale, the Trait Personality Inventory, which have high validity and reliability. All models were specified in structural equations modeling using Mplus v. 8.2. Results The positive correlates of PQoL are: self-efficacy, social support, and ego-resiliency. The negative correlate of PQoL is trait depression. The study confirmed that 2 factors affected ego-resiliency: self-efficacy and trait depression. Conclusions All significant factors, such as self-efficacy, social support, ego-resiliency, or trait depression, should be taken into account in rehabilitation programs.

    Today, disturbingly often, it is possible to witnesses the effects of stigma and exclusion not only of the individual, but of whole groups of people, the result of reinforced, persistent stereotypes and prejudices about the subjects mentioned. They cause wrong social attitudes, expressed by the deprivation of the isolated persons of their rights to create and nurture relationships based on closeness and love, and often doom these people to a life of total seclusion. This article is an attempt to show the far-reaching consequences of depriving persons with intellectual disabilities and denying the right of self-expression. It is also a critical reflectionon the irregularities experienced by people, towards whom it is introduced, in terms of institutional isolation. At the same time, by presenting the results of personal research and conclusions, attention is being drawn to the fact that in our society there is an emerging hope for positive changes in the daily treatment of the socially isolated individuals. Yet, there is a constant need for a continuous reinforcement of the public awareness of the fact that the reintegration of these excluded individuals in the community benefits both the parties involvedTaking up the theme of stigma and social exclusion of persons with intellectual disabilities and convicts is considered important and relevant, as this is an issue which remains topical and gives rise to multiple moral dilemmas.

    This article is devoted to the functioning of families that are in crisis as the result of a family member’s imprisonment. The author’s description of the most important functions and tasks of the family as the primary social group leads to further reflections. The disorganization of family life caused by placing a parent in prison is described and a case study is used to illustrate the issues. On the basis of an autobiographical narrative interview, the process of reorganizing family life is analyzed from the perspective of a ‘prisoner’s child.’

    Kara pozbawienia wolności ma zawierać pełną dolegliwość wyrażającą potępienie dla popełnionych czynów zabronionych. Kodeks karny wykonawczy wskazuje, że celem kary pozbawienia wolności jest wzbudzanie w skazanym woli współdziałania w kształtowaniu jego społecznie pożądanych postaw, w szczególności poczucia odpowiedzialności oraz potrzeby przestrzegania porządku prawnego i tym samym powstrzymania się od powrotu do przestępstwa, a co za tym idzie – zapobiegnięcie powrotu do przestępstwa. Zasadniczym zadaniem jest przygotowanie skazanego do życia na wolności, kształtowanie jego odpowiedzialności za czyny, a także woli współdziałania na rzecz jego readaptacji społecznej. Z uwagi na powyższe ustawodawca wprowadził do Kodeksu karnego wykonawczego instytucję trzech systemów wykonywania kary i tym samym przyznał wysoki stopień problematyce oddziaływań podejmowanych w trakcie wykonywania kary pozbawienia wolności, dodatkowo ją akcentując w nadanej każdemu systemowi nazwie. W niniejszym opracowaniu posłużono się analizą danych statystycznych wynikających z prowadzonych badań własnych oraz literaturą przedmiotu w zakresie omówienia systemów wykonywania kary pozbawienia wolności oraz ich wpływu powrotność do przestępstwa. Co powoduje, że skazani po odbyciu kary pozbawienia wolności decydują się na powrót do przestępstwa? Czy rzeczywiście dobrze dobrany system wykonywania kary pozbawienia wolności pozwoli zapobiec ryzyku powrotu do przestępstwa?
    The penalty of imprisonment is to contain a full ailment expressing condemnation for the committed prohibited acts. The Executive Penal Code indicates that the purpose of imprisonment is to “arouse in the convict the will to cooperate in shaping his socially desirable attitudes, in particular the sense of responsibility and the need to comply with the legal order and thus refrain from returning to crime”, and thus – preventing recidivism. The main task is to prepare the convict for life in freedom, shaping his responsibility for his actions, as well as the will to cooperate for his social readaptation. In view of the above, the legislator introduced the institution of three punishment enforcement systems into the Executive Penal Code and thus gave a high degree to the issue of interactions undertaken during the execution of a penalty of imprisonment, additionally emphasizing it in the name given to each system. This study uses the analysis of the resulting statistical data from own research and literature on the subject in the scope of discussing the systems of execution of the penalty of imprisonment and their impact on recidivism. What causes convicts to return to crime after serving a sentence of imprisonment? Will a well-chosen system of serving a prison sentence really prevent the risk of recidivism?

    Acute appendicitis and incarcerated femoral hernia belong to relatively well known surgical diseases with regard to diagnostic workup and treatment. de Garengeot’s hernia is an entity involving concurrent occurrence of both the above mentioned problems. This paper presents history of a 58-year old female patient who was diagnosed with this extremely rare syndrome. She presented to the Emergency Room of a hospital in Żyrardów due to painful mass in the right groin region, persisting for approximately 24 hours. De Garengeot’s hernia, through combination of two separate surgical entities, is associated with diagnostic difficulties and the therapeutic process occasionally requires unconventional decisions to be taken to improve prognosis.

    W badaniu, którego wyniki tu przedstawiono, założono rozpoznanie problemów dostrzeganych przez matki w związku z wizytami dziecka u ojca przebywającego w izolacji penitencjarnej. W tym z celu przeprowadzono analizę dyskusji na sześciu forach internetowych skupiających kobiety, których partner/mąż odbywał karę pozbawienia wolności, względnie został tymczasowo aresztowany. Posty autorstwa tych kobiet potraktowano jako dane zastane i zbadano z zastosowaniem metody analizy treści w jej odmianie opartej na analizie dyskursu. Przeprowadzone badanie umożliwiło zidentyfikowanie dylematów, jakie przeżywają matki zorientowane na realizację widzeń dziecka z ojcem przebywającym w zakładzie karnym. Wymieniały one zwłaszcza brak wiedzy odnośnie do kryteriów determinujących zgodę administracji zakładu karnego na widzenie. Równolegle dzieliły się wiedzą, jak przezwyciężyć niektóre z trudności swoiste dla widzeń dziecka z uwięzionym ojcem. Wyjaśniały procedurę poprzedzającą zgodę ze strony zakładu na widzenie, zalecały mentalne przygotowanie dziecka do wizyty, także po konsultacji z psychologiem, odbycie wizyty i tym samym osobiste zweryfikowanie obaw. Jednocześnie w badanych dyskusjach wiele było głosów od przeciwniczek wizyt dziecka w zakładzie karnym. W swej argumentacji wskazywały one na obciążenia, jakie może nieść dla dziecka tego rodzaju wizyta, na dotychczasowe niewywiązywanie się mężczyzny z obowiązków roli rodzicielskiej oraz brak wiary, że zależy mu na kontakcie z dzieckiem.
    The study, the results of which are presented in the article, assumed the recognition of problems noticed by mothers in connection with the child's visits to the father in penitentiary isolation. For this purpose, an analysis of online discussions on six different forums was carried out. These forums are frequented by women, whose partner/husband has served a prison sentence or has been temporarily arrested. Their posts have been treated as already existing data and have been examined using the content analysis method in its variant based on discourse analysis. The conducted study allowed to identify the dilemmas experienced by mothers focused on the realization of visits between incarcerated father and a child. In particular, they mentioned the lack of knowledge about the criteria determining the consent of the prison administration to a visit. At the same time, they shared their knowledge of how to overcome some of the difficulties specific to visits between incarcerated father and a child. They explained the procedure preceding the consent of the prison administration to a visit, they recommended to mentally prepare the child for such a visit, also after consulting a psychologist, visiting and thus personally verifying their own concerns. At the same time, many women in those discussions were opponents of such child's visits to the prison. In their arguments, they pointed to the burdens that such a visit may have for the child, the man's failure to fulfil his parental duties so far and the lack of faith that he cares about contact with the child.

    Social support is essential for mental and physical health and plays an important role in reducing the risk of returning to prison. The main sources of prisoners’ social support are relatives with whom they have the right to communicate using a variety of forms. The frequency of contact depends on the type of prison. However, little research examines prisoners’ communication with their relatives. The study was conducted on 478 men between the ages of 16 and 68 (M = 35,2; SD = 9,7), who were serving a prison sentence in one of five penitentiary facilities. The analysis revealed that the majority of incarcerated men had contact with their relatives, usually in a form of phone calls. The majority of them had contact with a mother. The study also demonstrated that the percentage of contacts with relatives decreased with age and time spent in prison.

    Od kilku lat wzrasta zainteresowanie problematyką rozwoju dziecka i wystąpieniu zaburzeń w jego zachowaniu w kontekście rodzicielskiego uwięzienia. Naukowcy podejmują próby ustalenia czy uwięzienie rodziców jest objawem globalnej dysfunkcyjności rodziny, czy raczej niezależnym czynnikiem ryzyka, na które może być narażone dziecko. W niniejszym artykule zostanie przedstawiona analiza dotychczasowych najważniejszych badań poświęconych nastoletnim dzieciom osób odbywających karę pozbawienia wolności, rekomendacje dotyczące przyszłych badań i przykłady interwencji przeznaczonych dla tej grupy.
    For several years there has been growing interest in the issue of child development and the occurrence of behavioral disorders in the context of parental incarceration. Researchers are attempting to determine whether parental incarceration is a symptom of global family dysfunctionality or rather an independent risk factor a child may be exposed to? This paper presents an analysis of the major research to date on adolescent children of incarcerated parents, recommendations for future research, and examples of interventions intended for this group.

    The article is based on a method of analyzing documentation on a prisoner social rehabilitation programme, which is focused on repairing broken bonds and consolidating relationships between parents and children. The programme’s objectives are discussed here, along with its methodology and evaluation process.The research material comprises various documents developed as part of the planning, implementation and evaluation of the programme, including workshop plans and evaluation and observation sheets generated in 2016–2018. The innovative prisoner social rehabilitation programme is discussed in detail in this article on the basis of the building and consolidation of parental bonds. Most social rehabilitation programmes of this type are informed by the social rehabilitation methods listed in Art. 67 § 3 of the Penal Code (1997), in which maintaining contact with family and the outside world is listed next to learning, work, cultural and educational activities, sport and therapy. The “Theatre, Mummy, Daddy and Me” programme is based on contemporary cognitive and behavioural approaches in psychology and therapy, and addition also draws on a multi-systemic approach to environmental therapy.In the context of the need to secure children’s rights and protect prisoners’ rights, it is the obligation of penitentiary institutions to secure contact between the incarcerated parents and their children.

    The article presents an innovative programme for the re-adaptation of inmates confined in correctional facilities which focusses on building and consolidating their bonds with their children. In Poland, contemporary social rehabilitation programmes are based on measures listed in the Polish Executive Penal Code of 1998 (Executive Penal Code, 1997, Art. 67 § 3). Apart from studying, working, cultural and educational activities, and therapeutic interventions, the Code also mentions contact with family members and relatives. These rehabilitation programmes include the right of convicts, under international and national law, to maintain contact with their families, while methodologically they are compliant with the most current cognitive-behavioural approach to therapy and corrective measures. They also draw on the multi-systemic approach, in a general sense. In the context of safeguarding children’s rights, contact between parents and children is the responsibility of the parents, but in the case of prisoners it is the responsibility of the correctional institution to ensure that prisoners can exercise their rights while serving a custodial sentence. The article takes advantage of the methodologies of document analysis and participant observation. It discusses the programme for the social re-adaptation of prisoners, which involves encouraging and consolidating relationships between parents and children while maintaining a focus on particular rehabilitation objectives, resocialisation methods, and outcome evaluation.
    Celem artykułu jest prezentacja innowacyjnego programu readaptacji skazanych w zakładzie karnym nakierowanego na budowanie i wzmacnianie więzi z dziećmi. Program „Teatr, Mama, Tata i Ja” realizowany jest od 2015 r. do chwili obecnej przez zespół Teatru Lalki i Aktora „Kubuś” i pracowników Aresztu Śledczego w Kielcach dla osób odbywających karę pozbawienia wolności. Współczesne programy resocjalizacji wykorzystują podstawowe środki resocjalizacji wymienione w polskim Kodeksie karnym wykonawczym z 1998 r. Obok nauki, pracy, zajęć kulturalno-oświatowych i sportowych oraz oddziaływań terapeutycznych regulacje prawne wskazują na kontakty z rodziną i osobami bliskimi. Programy te uwzględniają prawo skazanych do utrzymywania kontaktów z rodziną na mocy prawa międzynarodowego i krajowego, a w zakresie metodycznym są adekwatne do najbardziej aktualnego podejścia kognitywno-behawioralnego w terapii (cognitive-behavioural therapy) i działaniach korekcyjnych. Realizacja kontaktów dzieci z rodzicami jest obowiązkiem rodziców w kontekście zabezpieczenia praw dziecka, a po stronie instytucji korekcyjnej leży obowiązek zapewnienia skazanym realizacji ich praw w czasie odbywania kary pozbawienia wolności. Artykuł ma charakter empiryczny, wykorzystuje bowiem metody analizy dokumentów oraz obserwacji uczestniczącej.
