The article focuses on analyzing how Polish youth understand the purpose and meaning of life, taking into account the contemporary tendency to marginalize or eliminate the aspect of religion from the public sphere. The growing belief that man is the main source of progress, and that objective values and transcendent meaning are merely illusions, provides an important context for research on one’s perception of meaning in life. The research, conducted in the last quarter of 2023, employed a diagnostic survey method using the questionnaire technique. The study found justification in the field of fundamental theology, whose task is to show meaning in life to contemporary man. The uniqueness of the study lies in conducting a sociological and theological analysis among young people with faith, allowing for a better understanding of how religious aspects influence their perception of the meaning of life.

The article deals with the application of drama, a solution for inclusiveness in teaching children with special educational needs in the preschool and elementary school education spectrum, with the use of the Kolb cycle in the construction of classes. It presents the main principles of a training which was provided to a group of 78 students of pre-school and early school education, including forty-two professionally active teachers. Subsequently, in order to diagnose the application in practice of the acquired skills, a questionnaire of the author’s own design was used in a survey con- ducted one month and one year after the training. The results revealed that, according to the assumptions, professionally active teachers generally use drama in pre-schools and at school; what is more, the Kolb cycle is used creatively in combination with other educational and preventive techniques.

As different areas of life and an individual’s life roles undergo transformation and intermingle increasingly, the ways that people get married and start up families change as well. A dual-career marriage is a modern family model, within which both spouses realize, on the one hand, broadly defined professional careers under conditions of competitive job market and competitive forms of employment, often occupying managerial positions; and life careers on the other hand, those related to family, marital roles, housekeeping and earning the livelihood. As compared with traditional models and egalitarian partnerships, a dual-career marriage involves more sacrifices and threats, but can also provide many benefits. In the study it was attempted to make inquiries in that matter, rooted in our wish to examine this specific link between dual-career couples and a subjective sense of partners’ quality of life, particularly in the aspect of its meaning – as compared with that of spouses in traditional marriages and egalitarian partnerships. Then a more detailed purpose of this study was to verify whether satisfaction with one’s own achievements in partners of a dual-career marriage, both in their professional and extraprofessional life, together with the level of experienced stress are possible significant factors influencing the relation between role conflict and a reported level of sense of purpose in life. The study was conducted during 2013-2014 and involved examining a total of 150 couples in dual-career marriages (300 participants), i.e. relationships within which both partners realized their professional career in the competitive job market, oftentimes they occupied managerial posts and reconciled professional life with the role of a parent. All investigated participants in dualcareer relationships had higher education, their age varied from 28 to 40 years and each marriage had at least 1 child. The control group was composed of 160 egalitarian partnerships and 135 traditional marriages. In order to verify the research questions and hypotheses stated above, four diagnostic tools were used: Purpose in Life test, “Work-Life Balance” Questionnaire, Stress Level Questionnaire and Sense of Happiness Questionnaire. The analysis of empirical material presented that partners in dual-career relationships reported the highest level of experienced stress, fatigue, tension and role conflict, but also the highest levels of satisfaction with one’s achievements or the family’s financial situation – factors which can neutralize the negative impact of experienced stress and conflicts on the general sense of life meaning. Also presented that experiencing role conflicts is negatively correlated with a general sense of purpose in life and with satisfaction with one’s accomplishments, at the same time being positively correlated with experienced stress. It can be noticed, however, that in the calculated model a (high) level of satisfaction with one’s achievements acts as a specific buffer against the influence of experienced role conflict and stress.

The aim of this article was to present a Polish adaptation of the Multidimensional Existential Meaning Scale (MEMS) developed by George and Park (2017). The scale proposes a tripartite view of meaning in life, measuring it in three different dimensions: Comprehension, Purpose, and Mattering, which is a new interesting approach to the conceptualization of this factor from a broader, existential perspective. The scale testing procedure involved a research sample consisting of 401 participants. In addition to the MEMS scale, the Meaning in Life Questionnaire (MLQ) and the Purpose in Life Test (PIL) were used. The results obtained with the Polish version confirmed its reliability and validity, and the three-factor structure. The Cronbach’s α coefficient was .91 for the entire scale and oscillated between .72 and .89 for the subscales. The Polish MEMS contains 9 items; therefore, it is a short tool which can be successfully used in research on meaning in life.

The aim of the article is to present the concept and research on the development of autobiographical narrative in the course of a person’s life. Reference was made to basic concepts important for the analysis of the topic: the definition of narrative, constructionist assumptions, understanding the process of creating self-narrative and the definition of autobiographical narrative. The considerations also include the issue of autobiographical memory and the discussion on understanding autobiographical narrative as monolithic vs. polyphonic. The following subchapters discuss the predispositions and development of early narrative competences, the beginnings of constructing an autobiographical narrative, the mechanisms of shaping and changing the autobiographical narrative in adulthood, including the characteristic features of self-narratives in late adulthood. The review of research presented in the article documents the mechanisms of shaping the autobiographical narrative, the directions of its changes in the life course and selected relationships important for understanding the process of these changes (e.g. the issue of increasing the ability to reflect biographically with age, fulfilling the need for generativity, the effect of intentionally minimizing unpleasant feelings in senior age, the concept of gerotranscendence, etc.). The article ends with reflections on the importance of constructing an autobiographical narrative in the modern world, the availability of autobiographical reflection and its meaning-creating value.

The occurrence of the fern Matonia braunii (Goeppert) Harris, preserved in the growth position in sandstones of dune origin, is documented from the late Pliensbachian Szydłowiec Sandstone of the Drzewica Formation in the Holy Cross Mountains. This plant formed monotypic stands on coastal dunes during a marine highstand. The presence of this common Early Jurassic fern in such an unfavourable environment attests to the huge ecological plasticity of this species.

Aim. The aim of the research is to assess whether adult learners engaged in Torah/Bible studies report higher levels of psycho-social resources, specifically spirituality, meaning in life, hope, and social support, than learners who attend general enrichment courses, and whether psycho-social resources contribute to their meaning in life. Methods. Participants were 234 men and women over age 55 who study regularly in their leisure time: 56 Torah students in the hevruta (communal learning) method, 50 Torah students who participated in frontal Torah lectures, and 128 adults who attended lectures on various enrichment subjects. Participants completed self-report questionnaires that included demographic information and characteristics of the course, evaluations of the learning experience, the Spiritual Health and Life-Orientation Measure, the Snyder Hope Questionnaire, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), and the PIL – Purpose in Life questionnaire. Results. Torah and enrichment learners did not differ in meaning of life and hope. Torah learners reported a stronger learning experience, higher levels of transcendentality (an aspect of spirituality), and more social support from their peer group. For all learners, social support from the family was the strongest contributor to meaning in life, followed by hope and finally the communality aspect of spirituality. Conclusions. Findings confirm the importance of the human need for relatedness in determining meaning and suggest that the social milieu in which the leisure activity is held may be more important for cultivating meaning in life than the discipline studied.

Shaping a sense of purpose in life, as well as motivation for seeking it, is a remarkably important educational task. The youths in social institutions have often undergone traumatic experiences in their childhood; they are susceptible to disturbances in the development of the personality aspects responsible for setting up life goals and values, experiencing satisfaction, and engaging in proper social interactions. The aim of this article is to reveal the level and the nature of the sense of purpose in life of the pupils in ‘The Youth House SOS ’, as well as the degree of motivation for seeking it. The research was conducted with the use of J.C. Crumbaugh and L.T. Maholick’s ‘Purpose in Life test’ (PI L) and J.C. Crumbaugh’s ‘Seeking of Noetic Goals test’ (SONG ). The research involved 34 youths. The tests have revealed a medium level of the sense of purpose in life, as well as motivation for seeking it. Moreover, many respondents expressed the need for friends and family, who surface frequently in their responses.
Kształtowanie poczucia sensu życia i motywacji do jego poszukiwania to niezwykle ważne zadanie wychowawcze. Młodzież, która przebywa w placówkach socjalizacyjnych i która często wynosi przykre doświadczenia z dzieciństwa, jest zagrożona nieprawidłowościami w zakresie rozwoju struktur osobowości odpowiedzialnych za stanowienie celów i wartości życiowych, odpowiadających za odczuwanie satysfakcji, a także zadowalające funkcjonowanie społeczne. Celem artykułu było ukazanie, na jakim poziomie się znajduje i czym się charakteryzuje poczucie sensu życia wychowanków Domu Młodzieży SOS i w jakim stopniu wykazują oni motywację do jego poszukiwania. Do przeprowadzenia badań wykorzystano: „Test celu życia” (PI L) J.C. Crumbaugha i L.T. Maholicka i „Test poszukiwania celów noetycznych” (SONG ) J.C. Crumbaugha, którym objęto 34 osoby. Zarówno poczucie sensu życia, jak i motywacja do jego poszukiwania badanej młodzieży przyjęły średni poziom, ponadto widoczna jest wśród wychowanków Domu Młodzieży SOS potrzeba posiadania bliskich: rodziny, przyjaciół, do czego często odwołują się w swoich odpowiedziach.

The needs of individual to find meaning in his own life and to build own future conception are considered as important regulators of youth activity. This is a thesis accepted in psychological literature (Tyszkowa, 1990). Their realization is not only provided a positive transition of a youth to adulthood but also sets the framework for their further development. The article presents the results of research on the relation between sense of meaning in life and personal future conceptions built by modern young people. The results indicate that a relatively strong sense of meaning in life is characteristic for these adolescents, which created the conceptions of life with a high level of structuration.

The paper sought to analyze some forms of commitment to the formation of culture in various areas of activity in life. Moreover, the characterization of activities in social, cultural, moral, religious, aesthetic and cognitive life has been supplemented by a description of higher feelings, metaneeds and cultural values, as examined in psychology. It is J. Pastuszka (1897-1989), philosopher and theologian (concerned also with psychology), who takes participation and the formation of culture as a direction of activity in life. The positive aspect of such an approach to commitment in the formation of objective and subjective culture is its reference to action (conscious and purposeful behaviour), a behaviour that is not a weakly controlled expression of one's own experiences. Intentionality, the participation of reflective and normative awareness (moral assessment), characterizes the conception of culture on the basis of which J. Pastuszka analyzes the activity of man.

The aim of the study is to expand knowledge in meaningfulness of life of athlete and non-athlete college students at universities in Bratislava and identify differences in its dimensions: affective, motivation and cognitive. The research sample comprised of 198 undergraduates (males: n=90, 20.68±1.56 years of age; female: n=108, 20.74±1.16 years of age). The respondents were divided into 2 groups according to their sports activities: college students who do not take active part in any sports activities (non-athlete respondents), and college students who are engaged regularly (at least twice a week) in sport activities. The questionnaire The Scale of Life Meaningfulness was used as a research tool. The results revealed significant differences in total score of meaningfulness of life by male (U=383.0, p=0.001, r=0.52) and also female (U=687.5, p=0.001, r=0.45). According to three-component model we have found out the significant differences between athlete and non-athlete college students in affective dimension (male: p=0.025, female: p=0.007) and motivation dimension (male: p=0.001, female: p=0.001). There were no significant differences in cognitive dimension (male: p=0.062, female: p=0.127). According to our results which testified the fact that sport activity is one of the determinants for increased meaningfulness of life of undergraduates.

The article concerns the relationships between religion, analyzed within the framework of the religious meaning system, and religious coping as well as eudaimonistic well-being in the mediational perspective of meaning in life. In order to verify the hypotheses, two empirical studies (N = 187 and N = 177 people) were carried out to determine the nature and extent of the relationships between the above factors. The results showed that the religious meaning system was positively linked to eudaimonistic well-being, while negative religious strategy showed a negative relationship with it. There was also a positive relationship between religiosity and the dimensions of meaning in life: presence and search. The presence of meaning in life, in contrast to search, turned out to be a mediator in the relationships of the religious meaning system and religious coping with eudaimonistic well-being.

Aim. This research aims to theoretically characterize and empirically research the indicators of barriers and resources for journalists’ success in life through the prism of their professional scripts. The focus is on the axiological component of the professional script of media professionals. Methods. We used theoretical analysis of the psychological works aiming at studying journalists’ success in life, and such methodological instruments as the Lifetime Orienteering Test (Leontiev, 2000); an adapted version of James Crambo’s Purpose-in-Life Test (PIL); Leonard Maholiсk’s Personal Readiness for Change Questionnaire (1993), and Methodology Completeness of Life. Statistical correlation was analyzed with the use of Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Results. The theoretical analysis and empirical data revealed the correlation between the indicators of sense-of-life orientations and the indicators of personal readiness for change, script settings, perceptions of self, others and life. The results identify psychological barriers, and allocate directions of development of the technologies for optimization of journalists’ success in life. Conclusions. The results of the study made it possible to distinguish priority values-goals and values-instruments, important in the construction of the architectonics of the axiological component of the journalists’ professional script. The correlation between indicators of journalists’ middle level life-sense orientations and indicators of personal change readiness empirically confirmed a claim that innovative readiness of journalists intensified the process of reaching success in life. Psychological barriers of the cognitive process were stated as script attitudes. The development of technologies for the psychological support of journalists was considered as a prospect for our future studies.

W literaturze przedmiotu wskazuje się wiele negatywnych konsekwencji wynikających z faktu wychowywania dziecka tylko przez jednego z rodziców, konsekwencji ponoszonych nie tylko przez dzieci, ale również przez osoby dorosłe. Nie można jednoznacznie stwierdzić, że brak warunków dogodnych dla zaistnienia poczucia sensu życia bezwzględnie to poczucie człowiekowi odbiera. Podobnie zresztą jak istnienie owych sytuacji obiektywnie sprzyjających, nie gwarantuje zaistnienie poczucia sensu życia. Sytuacja trudna w życiu kobiety, jaką jest współwystępowanie samotnego rodzicielstwa z problemem bezdomności, wymuszającym konieczność zamieszkania w ośrodku wsparcia, może stać się dla niej bodźcem do poszukiwania i doświadczania sensu lub przeciwnie, stać się źródłem egzystencjalnego zagrożenia. Celem podjętych badań było poznanie poczucia sensu życia matek samotnie wychowujących dzieci, diagnoza ich celów i dążeń życiowych. Teoretyczny kontekst niniejszych rozważań stanowiła koncepcja noetycznego wymiaru osobowości i egzystencji K. Popielskiego. Badania przeprowadzono wśród kobiet zamieszkujących ośrodki wsparcia dla matek samotnie wychowujących dzieci. Do diagnozy poczucia sensu życia badanych zastosowano Skalę Poczucia Sensu Życia (PIL) J.C. Crumbaugha i L.T. Maholicka. Zgromadzony materiał poddano analizie ilościowej.
The article presents the results of a research on single mothers and their sense of purpose and meaning in life. Questions about the meaning of one’s own existence recur, with varying intensity, in the consciousness of every human being. Moreover, people always fulfil their own, personal meaning, related to their specific situation. The questions ‘who am I?’, ‘why do I live?’, ‘what is the meaning of my life?’ seem particularly relevant when a person is in a difficult situation. Single parenthood can be perceived as such a situation. The literature of the subject suggests multiple negative consequences of the fact of raising a child by a single parent; these consequences are faced not only by children, but also by adults. It is not possible to state unequivocally that the lack of favourable conditions will deprive a person of their sense of life purpose and meaning entirely. Similarly, even when objectively favourable conditions exist, they are not a guarantee that a person will perceive her or his life as meaningful. In a woman’s life, a difficult situation such as being a single mother, combined with homelessness and a necessity to move to a residential home for single mothers, can become the stimulus to search for and experience the meaning of life or, on the contrary, it can be a source of an existential insecurity. The purpose of this research was to learn how single mothers perceive the meaning of their lives and to assess their life purposes and aspirations. The theoretical context of these reflections is based on K. Popielski’s concept of the noetic dimension of personality and existence. The research was conducted among women living in residential homes for single mothers. Their sense of purpose and meaning in life was assessed with the use of J.C. Crumbaugh and L.T. Maholick’s Purpose in Life Scale (PIL). The collected material was evaluated using quantitative analysis.
