This is an edited transcript of the audio recording of the roundtable on Future, Democracy, and Platforms, which was organized at the EUMEPLAT project meeting at Charles University in Prague on 15 January 2024, in collaboration with the MeDeMAP (Mapping Media for Future Democracies) project. The current digital public spaces have been transformed by platformization, and besides the positive consequences such as democratization of communication or access to information, these processes driven by algorithms have brought political, cultural, and economic asymmetries. At the roundtable, we discussed challenges and threats to fostering more democratic platform environments in the future with experts from fields such as digital and economic anthropology or new media philosophy. Among the discussed platform related topics were public and cooperative ownership, the need to strengthen their democracy and imagination or pleasure as the key principles.

This review article discusses two newly-released publications on communist women activists: Kristen Ghodsee’s Red Valkyries: Feminist Lessons from Five Revolutionary Women and The Palgrave Handbook of Communist Women Activists around the World, edited by Francisca de Haan. It focuses on questions of narrative and the persuasive function of the reviewed works, asking how and for whom one should write about communist women today. It brings to light methodological challenges, as well as those related to access to sources on communist women. It also reflects on the place that publications which tell stories of communist women who challenged gender, class, and racial inequalities in the past occupy in the perception of contemporary readers, so often confronted in these times with experiences of inequality and violence.

Artykuł wyrasta z przekonania o analogii zachodzącej pomiędzy symptomatycznym dla tzw. posthumanistyki odchodzeniem od antropocentrycznego modelu refleksji a wypracowywanymi przez różne szkoły duchowości ćwiczeniami mającymi na celu przezwyciężanie egocentrycznej postawy i związanej z nią narcystycznej optyki. Autorka zwraca uwagę na przypadki, w których współcześni humaniści angażują się w artystyczne projekty wykorzystujące metody świadomego oddychania, czy medytacji i analizuje je w świetle wyników badań pokazujących, jak te religijne w swej proweniencji praktyki stymulują doświadczenia auto-transcendencji.
The article stems from the conviction that there is an analogy between departing from the anthropocentric model of reflection (symptomatic for the so-called posthumanities) and certain practices developed by various schools of spirituality in order to overcome the egocentric viewpoint. The author provides a theoretical framework, which attempts at redefining the notion of imagination in the context of ecocriticism and Malabou’s plasticity. Then she draws attention to cases in which contemporary humanists engage in artistic projects using methods of conscious breathing and meditation. She analyzes those installations in the light of contemporary research on meditation and shows how these postsecular practices stimulate self-transcendent experiences.

Poezja Wiktara Siamaszki stanowi znaczący i radykalnie nowy wkład w dziedzictwo literackie Białoruskiego Stowarzyszenia Literackiego „Białowieża”. Krótkie, wręcz minimalistyczne wiersze poety uderzają niebanalnymi i niekonwencjonalnymi środkami językowymi, takimi jak gra słów, eufonia, anafora czy palindrom. Równie imponująco prezentuje się tematyka poezji Siamaszki: od problematyki rodzinnej, poprzez starzenie się i śmierć, religię (szczególnie wiarę katolicką), aż po życie w mieście i na wsi, od Moskwy po Paryż, z Mińskiem jako centrum wszechświata. Pięć wydanych dotąd (w latach 2010–2023) książek tego muzyka i dziennikarza, a także poety awangardowego dla odbiorcy stanowi zarówno wyzwanie, jak i inspirację głównie ze względu na szatę językową: odważnym operowaniem nowatorskim słownictwem oraz przełamywaniem językowego tabu. Wyobraźnia poetycka oraz metaforyka Siamaszki wymagają szerszego opracowania, niniejszy artykuł został poświęcony jedynie ogólnej prezentacji twórczości poetyckiej tego zasługującego na uwagę poety.
The poetry of Viktar Siamaška brings a strong and radically new contribution to the literary heritage of the Bielavieža group of Belarusian writers in eastern Poland. His mainly short, even minimalist, verses strike fresh and unconventional notes, rich in wordplay, euphony, anaphora and palindromes in all the themes he tackles, such as family, ageing and death, religion (particularly his Catholic faith), urban and rural life, the latter including many fantastic, personified images; his view of the city is dyspeptic from Moscow to Paris with Miensk in the centre. Musician and journalist as well as avant-garde poet, his five books to date (2010–2023) are both challenging and stimulating. Adventurous in form on the page, their lexical range is broad, not least in the use of non-standard, previously taboo words. A whole study could be made of Siamaška’s fantastic imagery and metaphoric structures, but the present study is devoted only to an overall picture of his poetic achievement to date.
Паэзія Віктара Сямашкі ўносіць прыкметны і радыкальна новы ўклад у літаратурную спадчыну Беларускага літаратурнага аб’яднання „Белавежа” ва ўсходняй Польшчы. Кароткія, нават мінімалістычныя вершы паэта ўражваюць арыгінальнымі і нетрадыцыйнымі моўнымі сродкамі, такімі як гульня слоў, эўфанія, анафара і паліндром. Не менш уражвае і тэматычны дыяпазон паэзіі Сямашкі: ад сямейных праблем праз старэнне і смерць, рэлігію (асабліва каталіцкую) да жыцця ў горадзе і ў вёсцы, ад Масквы да Парыжа, з Мінскам як цэнтрам сусвету. Пяць кніг паэта-авангардыста, музыканта і журналіста, апублікаваныя дагэтуль (у 2010–2023 гг.), уяўляюць сабой выклік, але таксама натхненне для чытача, дзякуючы іх непаўторнай мове і аўтарскаму стылю: смеламу выкарыстанню наватарскай лексікі і парушэнню моўных табу. Фантастычная вобразнасць і метафарычныя канструкцыі Сямашкі заслугоўваюць асобнага глыбокага даследавання; даны артыкул дае толькі агульнае ўяўленне пра творчасць гэтага знакамітага паэта, пра яго важнейшыя дасягненні на сённяшні дзень.

The Ultimate Paintings, a series of abstractions made by Ad Reinhardt during the 1960s, are coupled with writings with obvious affinities to the apophatic formulas of the commentaries of the Upanishads (the philosophical conclusions of the Vedas) known as the “nondual Vedānta” (Advaita Vedānta). The abstractions themselves refer to the model of the yantra, the geometrical diagram into which Brahmanic iconography is supposed to subside. In this instance, the apophasis defeats the attempt to signify through painting and language what constitutes itself in painting and language.

This article is aimed at presenting the main assumptions of the opening education in the context of the need to develop regional, intercultural and pro-environmental education. The reflections and diagnoses presented in the text draw on both the author’s research and teaching experience, as well as on a critical view of educational policy developed in Poland. The author asks if opening education can be used as a tool for the democratizing and ecologisation of knowledge, shaping an open society and social imagination. In the context of late capitalism, the dominant neoliberal rationality, the multiculturalism of the world, the climate and environmental crisis, an important aspect of the discussion is the diagnosis of the need to practice opening education to the future.
Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie głównych założeń edukacji otwierającej w kontekście potrzeby rozwijania edukacji międzykulturowej i proklimatycznej. Refleksje i rozpoznania przedstawione w tekście czerpią zarówno z doświadczeń badawczych i dydaktycznych autorki, jak i z krytycznego oglądu polityki edukacyjnej funkcjonującej w Polsce. Autorka tekstu stawia pytanie, czy edukacja otwierająca może być wykorzystana jako narzędzie demokratyzacji i ekologizacji wiedzy, kształtujące społeczeństwo otwarte i wyobraźnię społeczną. W kontekście późnego kapitalizmu, dominującej racjonalności neoliberalnej, wielokulturowości świata, kryzysu klimatycznego i ekologicznego, ważnym aspektem podjętych rozważań jest diagnoza o potrzebie praktykowania edukacji otwierającej do przyszłości.

Powszechność stosowania eksperymentów myślowych w filozofii sprawia, że same eksperymenty myślowe stają się coraz częstszym przedmiotem filozoficznych analiz. Różni autorzy, wychodząc od rozmaitych epistemologicznych i metafizycznych założeń, proponowali rozmaite poglądy na naturę eksperymentów myślowych. Moim celem jest krytyczna analiza tych stanowisk. W pierwszej części artykułu podaję ogólną charakterystykę eksperymentów myślowych, zakładając podobieństwo eksperymentów myślowych i eksperymentów rzeczywistych. W drugiej części omawiam obecne w literaturze propozycje typologizacji eksperymentów myślowych. W trzeciej części przedstawiam sześć stanowisk dotyczących natury eksperymentu myślowego.
The widespread use of thought experiments in philosophy has made thought experiments themselves an increasingly common subject of philosophical analysis. Different authors, starting from various epistemological and metaphysical assumptions, have proposed a variety of views on the nature of thought experiments. The purpose of this paper is a critical analysis of these positions. In the first, I give a general characterization of thought experiments assuming the similarity of thought experiments and real experiments. In the second part, I discuss the typologizations of thought experiments present in the literature. In the third part, I present six concepts of thought experiment.

The article deals with the subject of the connection between horror and imagination in selected contemporary theatre performances. Bearing in mind the wide potential of the discussed issue, the article focuses on stage and verbal detail, referring to the works of Marina Carr, Complicité, Ex Machina, as well as the unexpectedly current – also in the context of the war in Ukraine – Brazilian staging of Waiting for Godot at the Teatro Oficina Uzyna Uzona from São Paolo, directed by Zé Celso.

Podejmowany problem badawczy, przyjmujący postać pytania o kształt i przebieg kolonizacji pedagogiki ogólnej przez pedagogikę krytyczną w okresie transformacji ustrojowej w Polsce, ma swoje źródło w potrzebie rozpoznania obecnej dynamiki naszej wyobraźni pedagogicznej i zrozumienia fenomenu zróżnicowania pedagogiki krytycznej rozwijanej w poszczególnych rodzimych ośrodkach akademickich. Przygotowany w latach 2017–2019 materiał został podzielony na dwa artykuły. W części pierwszej rekonstrukcje poszczególnych tematów i wątków z zakresu problematyki teorii krytycznej szkoły frankfurckiej czy postmodernizmu stanowiły wprowadzenie do prezentacji wstępnego obrazu kolonizacji polskiej pedagogiki ogólnej przez pedagogikę krytyczną, który to proces zakorzeniania na przełomie lat 80. i 90. ubiegłego wieku stanowi zasadnicze zagadnienie części drugiej. Autor koncentruje uwagę na recepcji, reakcji, przebiegu i sposobach zakorzeniania się krytycznej teorii edukacji na gruncie polskiej pedagogiki w początkowej fazie jej osiedlania. Poczyniony wysiłek badawczy ma dostarczyć wiedzy przydatnej do kolejnych badań podjętej problematyki, rozpoznania dalszych losów poszczególnych kolonii pedagogiki krytycznej, ale również kilku wstępnych ustaleń, które Autor przedstawi w zakończeniu tego artykułu.
The research problem undertaken, taking the form of a question about the shape and course of the colonization of general pedagogy by critical pedagogy in the period of the political transformation in Poland, has its source in the need to recognize the current dynamics of our pedagogical imagination and also in the need to understand the phenomenon of the differentiation of critical pedagogy developed in individual Polish academic centers. The material prepared in 2017–2019 was divided into two articles. In the first part the reconstructions of individual topics and threads in the field of the critical theory of the Frankfurt school and postmodernism were a introduction to the presentation of the initial picture of the colonization of Polish general pedagogy by critical pedagogy, which process of rooting at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s will be the main issue in the second part. The author focuses on the reception, reaction, course and ways in which critical educational theory took root in the initial phase of its settlement in Polish pedagogy. The research effort made is to provide knowledge useful for further research on the issues raised, for identifying the further fate of individual colonies of critical pedagogy.

Violence, as a concept, has shaped most of human history and discourse. Over the centuries, the concept has gone through dynamic evolutions and should be understood in relation to diverse agents such as nation, nostalgia, and culture. Modern society’s tendency to impede and constrain overt forms of violence has paved the way for covert forms to exist in socio-cultural spheres. Cultural violence is one such realization where aggression gets exercised covertly through heterogenous mediums such as language, regulations, mass media, and most importantly cultural practices. Its topological structures can be traced in national imagination and a sense of cultural nostalgia originating out of it, that ultimately formulates cultural “otherness.” In Gandhian philosophy, the absence of physical aggression is insignificant, if not complemented with the eradication of violence from the cultural and intellectual strata. Gandhi’s critique of exclusive nationalism and narrowness is reflective of a distinct kind of cultural topology that generates structural violence and with the due course of history it gets legitimacy to exert power over the cultural binary it constructed. The fundamental questions of the paper are associated with assessing the role of national imagination and cultural imperatives in germinating the structures of violence in culture, exclusive nationalism, and Gandhian reconsideration of peace in the context of covert violence in the material and intellectual realms.

In the 1948 movie The Red Shoes, the power of imagination and artistic vocation are metaphorically represented as a pair of red dancing shoes. Just as in Andersen’s fable, the shoes are enchanted: they can open up new horizons and possibilities of existence and artistic expression to the one that wears them. But their inexhaustible power can also possess her, demand complete devotion, or even dance her to death. A hermeneutic reading of the three key scenes from the movie inspires a reflection on the dialectics of the power of imagination and its productive as well as destructive potential.

The paper offers a reading of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Sylwia Chutnik’s collection of short stories W krainie czarów [In wonderland], addressing the protagonists’ journey into self. Chutnik’s stories are interpreted in terms of some key motifs drawn from a reading of Carroll’s novel, which constitute the touch points of the two authorial designs: dream, imagination, metamorphosis, change, language, auto-thematicity, the demiurgic role of the narrator, and an open ending. Juxtaposed, these concepts shed light on the problem of travelling in time and space understood as a return to the world of childhood imagination. The analysis of Chutnik’s eleven short stories reveals a literary creation of signifying space, in particular the images of Warsaw and Silesia as sites appropriated by history as well as by the protagonists. In every case (be it cities, people’s experiences or post-traumatic stories), an attempted interpretation of particular places and times is shown as a process of discovering the mythology of space – a return to a personal Wonderland. The reflections are brought together by referring to the problem of “bad memory”, a literary means of presenting the reader with alternative testimonies of postmemory.

Opis:
We will examine the largely ethical vocation of Romain Gary's memorial writing project, which leads it to metamorphose itself into a literary tomb of the forgotten dead. We will then discuss, from a more narratological point of view, how this memory emerges untimely in the narrative and sometimes frees itself from it to signify the transcendent character of the name and the face. Finally, we will show that Gary goes beyond the somewhat naive vision of the memory as a mere recorder of events or images by associating it with the imagination to give it a poetic and counter-historical use.

Według tradycji psychoanalitycznej funkcjonujemy w świecie społecznym dzięki zasadzie rzeczywistości. Artykuł będzie dotyczył roli wyobraźni jako siły politycznej, siły przekształcającej ramy rzeczywistości społecznej ożywianej przez historyczną modyfikację tej zasady - zasadę wydajności. Ze względu na to, że – jak pokazał to Marcuse - rozum stał się elementem dominacji, jedyną siłą emancypacyjną, zdolną przeciwstawić się codziennej rutynie i powtarzalności jest wyobraźnia. Proponujemy zatem rozwinięcie tej idei wyobraźni jako środka wyzwolenia z jednowymiarowego świata i przemiany świata społecznego w kontekście nowej ekonomii libidinalnej zarysowanej przez G.H. Marcusego w dwóch pracach: Eros i cywilizacja oraz Człowiek jednowymiarowy.
According to the psychoanalytic tradition, we function in the social world thanks to the reality principle. The article will deal with the role of the imagination as a political force, a force transforming the framework of social reality animated by the historical modification of this principle - the performance principle. Due to the fact that - as Marcuse has shown - reason has become an element of domination, the only emancipatory force capable of opposing the daily routine and repetition is imagination. Therefore, we propose to develop this idea of imagination as a means of liberation from the one-dimensional world and transformation of the social world in the context of the new libidinal economy outlined by G.H. Marcuse in two works: Eros and Civilization and One-Dimensional Man.

L’article a pour but de confronter deux variantes de « l’imaginaire de la crise » se manifestant dans les pratiques poétiques de deux écrivains francophones contemporains, Michel Houellebecq et Colette Nys-Mazure. L’examen de quelques traits caractéristiques de leurs univers imaginaires, représentés entre autres par les figures du Père et de la Mère, permet de réfléchir sur les motivations profondes de leurs attitudes artistiques et existentielles. Il s’avérera que les stratégies poétiques qu’ils adoptent face aux problèmes existentiels fondamentaux restent en correspondance plus ou moins directe avec les vertus chrétiennes (la foi, l’espérance et l’amour), même si le point de départ pour Houellebecq (athée ou agnostique) est la « part sombre » de l’existence alors que Nys-Mazure (chrétienne, catholique) choisit sa « part claire », tous deux préfèrent construire que démolir. L’intuition d’une transcendance qui émane de leur soif d’harmonie poursuivie dans le monde chaotique contemporain permet de constater que la poésie, contredisant la crise du sujet et celle de la société, détient les moyens qui permettent de s’opposer – non sans succès – à la fameuse « crise de vers ».
This article juxtaposes two strains of “the imagination of crisis” that manifest in the poetic practice of two contemporary francophone writers – the Michel Houellebecq (French) and the Colette Nys-Mazure (Belgian). Examination of several characteristic traits of their imaginary universes, such as for example the figure of the Father and of the Mother, invites reflection on the profound motivation that belies their artistic and existential standpoints. It would appear that the poetic strategies each adopts in the face of fundamental existential problems, correspond more or less directly to the Christian virtues (faith, hope, love), even though for Houellebecq (atheist or agnostic) the point of departure is the “dark side” of life, whilst Nys-Mazure (Christian, Catholic) chooses the “bright side”: both poets prefer to build rather than tear down. The intuition of a transcendence that emanates from their thirst for harmony in the chaotic modern world makes it possible to claim that poetry, which is capable of either “shouting the crisis from the rooftops” or refuting it, might possibly succeed in counteracting the “crise des vers”.
