Opis:
For a long time, Thematic roles have received much attention, raising many disputes and controversies, but they still remain a ‘murky construct’ (Newmeyer, 2010, Rissman and Majid, 2019). Dowty’s words of 1986 that “the perennial vexing problem is the lack of agreement among linguists as to which thematic roles exist, and the absence of any obvious way to decide this question” still hold true. Departing from the traditional ‘intuitive semantic’ approach, I provided evidence that Thematic roles are indispensable components of image schemas, and constitute a scaffolding for language structures (2022, forthcoming). A natural question arose then, where they come from in the image schemas. Fillmore (1968) proposed that they may be, “presumably, innate concepts”, while Langacker (1991) alluded to their “nonlinguistic” origin. The present paper argues that Thematic roles come from “nonlinguistic” sources, i.e., human interpretation and categorization of reality, completing the Thematic roles embodiment process.

Opis:
In the field of comics studies, which evolved from a mere topic area into a burgeoning field of inquiry at the turn of 1980s and 1990s, the dialogue about meaning in comics was initiated by practicing cartoonists, who proposed new lines of research and introduced serviceable terminology which remains in use even today. These early contributions may have provided a solid basis for the investigation of meaning in comics, but they were repeatedly criticized for their lack of an academic orientation prerequisite for serious-minded comics scholarship. With the onset of the new millennium, it was linguistic theory that came to be called upon with increasing frequency to provide the missing orientation. Recent observers point out that for over a decade linguistics in general, and cognitive linguistics in particular, has informed much of the most insightful comics research. This paper is an attempt to contribute to the intersection of cognitive linguistics and comics scholarship by demonstrating that a number of conceptual metaphors whose linguistic manifestations have been studied in considerable detail facilitate, either separately or jointly, the conceptualization of the main formal unit of comics: the so-called panel. It appears that depending on what individual panels are taken to refer to (events, states, periods of time, visual fields, portions of the world of the story), they are metaphorized in different ways (as objects, containers, windows onto the world of the story), in accordance with a central tenet of conceptual metaphor theory whereby metaphors highlight some aspects of the metaphorized concept and simultaneously hide others. On the one hand, this paper adds to the growing body of research demonstrating that metaphor is a conceptual mechanism which transcends language; on the other, it adds to the dialogue about how comics achieve meaning by discussing the metaphorical underpinnings of the panel, and by framing this discussion in terms of cognitive linguistics, a scholarly tradition with which comics studies have successfully intersected.

Cognitive semantics, prepositions, explicit grammar, implicit grammar, image schemas, motivation in language
Opis:
Prepositions are highly polysemous items and for this reason they appear in various semantic and syntactic contexts. As a result, they are very difficult in the process of teaching and learning a foreign language. It is important to know that even very advanced learners of Italian make preposition mistakes (Bagna 2003). Because of this, formal teaching of grammar and explicit correction has been focused on in the present research. The inclusion of explicit grammar teaching (Benucci 1994; Freddi 1999; Balboni 1994, 2012; Bettoni 2009) seems to be essential at advanced levels like C1 and C2 since such levels of proficiency are required for future translators and teachers of Italian as a FL. In this research, Cognitive semantics methodology has been adopted according to the findings by Johnson (1987, 2005) and Lakoff (1987) and Dodge, Lakoff (2005). Image schemas (an inherent part of the methodology) give image schematic answers to the way in which prepositional phrases meaning is built into language. The container schema allows for the interpretation of the unit in, the support and contiguity schema is a tool for interpreting the unit su and the preposition a is modelled by a path schema which highlights a static landmark deprived of shape when the trajector is only localized or an endpoint landmark deprived of shape as well. The same image schemas (seem to be universal perceptive tools valid also in language) provide a basic structure for the Polish equivalents such as: w + loc, na + loc, na + acc, do + gen. Obviously the same conceptualizations in both languages are not frequent. Prepositional landmarks, in fact, reflect different spatial categorizations. The non correspondence of prepositional units in both languages do not mean that the prepositional use is completely unmotivated. This seems motivated with the salience of a particular image schema in a given context. Such clues may result very useful in the process of teaching/learning Italian to Polish speakers as they could sensibilize students to image schematic principles that underlie the semantic interpretation of prepositional units.

Opis:
The present paper aims at analyzing the conceptual metaphors for sin identified in the English version of the Bible. The experience of moral evil belongs to basic human experiences and in theological interpretation, its existence is the reason for the salvation brought to people by Christ. However, from the semantic point of view, the concept of sin itself is highly abstract and difficult to defi ne. In order to conceptualize that notion, people frequently employ conceptual metaphors which enable them to refer to the abstract through the use of the concrete. This study is based on the English translation of Scripture published as the New Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition (2007[1989]). That version of Scripture is a revised edition of the famous King James Bible (1611) and it is widely used among Christians representing various denominations. The identifi ed sin metaphors are based on either sensorimotor or cultural experience. There are conceptualizations of sin that are motivated by preconceptual image schemas, ontological metaphors, and metaphors that combine cultural scripts and image schemas.

Opis:
Celem artykułu jest omówienie koncepcji schematów mimetycznych (mimetic schema), zaproponowanych przez Jordana Zlateva, i jej zastosowanie w opisie semantyki gestów ikonicznych. Schematy mimetyczne cechuje większa szczegółowość, a więc i mniejszy stopień abstrakcji niż schematy wyobrażeniowe (image schema), dotychczas najczęściej stosowane w badaniach semantyki metafor i gestów.
The aim of the article is to discuss the concept of mimetic schemas, proposed by Jordan Zlatev, and its application in the description of the semantics of iconic gestures. The mimetic schemas are characterized by greater details, and therefore a smaller degree of abstraction than the image schemas, which are most frequently used in the study of metaphors and gestures. The article will discuss the properties of mimetic schemes and their comparison with image schemas. The analytical part will present the results of research aimed at extracting these schemas based on the observation of gestures and statements of participants during three task sessions.

Opis:
The analysis of the Italian preposition a in spatial contexts (static or dynamic) leads to the conclusion that this unit engenders path schema interpretation (source – path – goal) in whatever context it appears. In dynamic contexts path schema highlights the final location of a trajector that has moved along a path built up into the verb stem. In static contexts the location of a trajector is visualized as situated at a point of the path where previuos movement has stopped (suspended motion). In both cases the landmark is approximately idealized as a point i.e. it is shapeless. This characteristic renders the unit a a flexible semantic tool apt to be used in spatial and metaphorical contexts. The Polish equivalents of a phrases in Italian are the following: w+loc, na+loc, nad+instr, do+gen, na+acc, nad+acc, o+loc and bare dative. They all involve the path schema combined with other image schemas such as: container schema, surface, verticality and endpoint (recipient) schema. In Polish the schematic meaning is conveyed not only by prepositional units and verbs but also by inflectional case governed by prepositions. Usually such a case is convergent with dynamic (accusative, genitive) or static (locative, instrumental) predication.

This paper explores the concept of acqua in Italian on the basis of linguistic data coming from: the Corpus della Repubblica, the Dizionario Treccani, the Dizionario delle collocazioni (Tiberii 2012) and the Dizionario Combinatorio Compatto Italiano (Lo Cascio 2012). First, the following phrases in acqua, sull’acqua and per acqua have been analyzed using image schemas such as: container, surface and path. Second, three conceptual metaphors have been formulated after the analysis of specific metaphoric language in context drawn from the Corpus della Repubblica. The analyzed instances of metaphoric extensions of acqua (source – domain) allow for the understanding of target domains such as: DESTRUCTIVE FORCES, DANGERS and ENEMIES. On the one hand, the research has proven that image schemas structure perceptual experience and consequently the meaning of linguistic expressions such as: in acqua, sull’acqua and per acqua. On the other, it has revealed the importance of conceptual metaphor in shaping the comprehension of the concept of acqua in Italian.

Opis:
The analysis of the Italian preposition su in spatial contexts (static, involving undirectional movement or dynamic) leads to the conclusion that su engenders support and contiguity schema interpretation in whatever context it appears. The term support implies terms such as surface and contiguity (contact). In both static and dynamic contexts the location of a trajector is visualized as contigously situated on the surface of the landmark. In both cases the landmark is an idealized plane whose boundaries are perceptively unimportant in a given configuration, even though in the real world they are clearly cut. The boundaries, which are not focalized, render possible the temporal uses of the unit su with the meaning of an approximate location in time. The Polish equivalents of su phrases are the following: na+loc, na+acc, po+loc, około(koło)+gen. The structures na+loc, na+acc involve the support and contiguity schema. The construction około(koło) +gen can be analyzed with near – far schema and applies to the approximate location in space and time in Polish. The schematic meaning is conveyed not only by prepositional units but also by inflectional case governed by prepositions. Usually such a case is convergent with dynamic (accusative) or static (locative, genitive) predication.
Z analizy włoskiego przyimka su w kontekstach przestrzennych wynika, że przyimek ten może być interpretowany poprzez schemat wyobrażeniowy przyległości i podpory. Podpora przywołuje pojęcie powierzchni i kontaktu. W języku polskim schematyczne znaczenie wynika z przyimka i przypadka morfologicznego wymaganego składnią rządu. Taki przypadek jest kompatybilny ze statyczną (miejscownik, dopełniacz) lub dynamiczną (biernik) predykacją.

Opis:
The aim of this study (N = 713) was to adapt the Appearance Schemas Inventory–Revised into Polish and evaluate its psychometric properties. The ASI-R is a widely used tool for measuring appearance schemas, but it is currently not available in Polish. The adaptation of the ASI-R has the potential to fill this gap and encourage research in the Polish community. The validation of the scale was conducted on two separate samples of healthy adults. Although the results indicate that the Polish version of the scale, in contrast to the original one, exhibits a one-factor structure, its psychometric properties are robust. The scale demonstrates high internal consistency and sound construct validity, established through correlations with various aspects of psychosocial functioning, along with body image and sociocultural attitudes toward appearance. The scale seems to be gender-invariant and can be utilized in future studies that adopt a cognitive-behavioral approach to appearance schemas.
