Opis:
Purpose The complex monitoring of rock slides with the size of 16 ha in order to predict the development of other slides and prevent possible human and material losses. Methods Precise geodetic point measurement, terrestrial laser and image scanning and aerial photogrammetry were used to obtain detailed knowledge about the geometry and behaviour of the rock slide. Except for terrestrial images, the images were taken using an SLR camera (set on a motor paraglide) and a compact camera (set on a remotely piloted system). The state and condition of the locality before the rock slide was taken from archive images taken by a digital large format camera. Results Vectors and velocities of the displacements of discrete points were determined with high precision; the changes in quarry wall surfaces were determined by laser and photogrammetry scanning. Finally, high resolution orthophotomosaics of the site were generated using aerial photogrammetry at each observation point. Practical implications The termination of mining and the design of the remediation works were determined according to the results of the measurements. Also, monitoring was carried out in order to observe any changes due to the implementation of a highway project based in the localisation. Originality/ value Complex geodetic and photogrammetric monitoring of rock slides offers detailed information about slide surfaces and has previously been used in Slovakia on a significant scale.

Opis:
Root distribution sampling techniques are often inaccurate, time consuming and costly. We present an inexpensive approach to soil profile-wall mapping using a desktop scanner that allowed us to spend reduced time in the field. The scanner was pressed onto the vertical surface of a 1 x 1 m soil pit and images of the roots were taken in situ. In a common garden planting of eleven, 30-year-old conifer and hardwood tree species in Poland, we compared root counts (number of roots cm–2) obtained by this method with independent measurements of root length density (RLD) obtained from soil cores. We found a positive correlation (Spearman rank correlation r=0.93; P<0.001) suggesting general agreement of the two approaches in ranking among the species. Soil coring as well as grid mapping with plastic overlays took a longer total time for quantifying root distribution than the scanning procedure. The desktop scanner approach we developed is an inexpensive, time efficient and accurate way of quantifying root distribution and abundance that allows a unique coupling of root data to soil properties.

Opis:
In the field of comics studies, which evolved from a mere topic area into a burgeoning field of inquiry at the turn of 1980s and 1990s, the dialogue about meaning in comics was initiated by practicing cartoonists, who proposed new lines of research and introduced serviceable terminology which remains in use even today. These early contributions may have provided a solid basis for the investigation of meaning in comics, but they were repeatedly criticized for their lack of an academic orientation prerequisite for serious-minded comics scholarship. With the onset of the new millennium, it was linguistic theory that came to be called upon with increasing frequency to provide the missing orientation. Recent observers point out that for over a decade linguistics in general, and cognitive linguistics in particular, has informed much of the most insightful comics research. This paper is an attempt to contribute to the intersection of cognitive linguistics and comics scholarship by demonstrating that a number of conceptual metaphors whose linguistic manifestations have been studied in considerable detail facilitate, either separately or jointly, the conceptualization of the main formal unit of comics: the so-called panel. It appears that depending on what individual panels are taken to refer to (events, states, periods of time, visual fields, portions of the world of the story), they are metaphorized in different ways (as objects, containers, windows onto the world of the story), in accordance with a central tenet of conceptual metaphor theory whereby metaphors highlight some aspects of the metaphorized concept and simultaneously hide others. On the one hand, this paper adds to the growing body of research demonstrating that metaphor is a conceptual mechanism which transcends language; on the other, it adds to the dialogue about how comics achieve meaning by discussing the metaphorical underpinnings of the panel, and by framing this discussion in terms of cognitive linguistics, a scholarly tradition with which comics studies have successfully intersected.

Opis:
Creation and refinement of modern research methods in the last century had a signifi cant impact on the dynamic development of various fields of science. Special attention deserves computer image analysis and scanning electron microscopy. These methods can be used in virtually any field of science dealing with solids. Modern methods have many applications in environmental engineering. Studies, using the above advanced testing methods are also widely used in waste management. The article presents progressive research methodology of using image analysis and scanning electron microscopy in environmental engineering and waste management. It especially presents the application of these methods to determine physical, chemical and mineralogical properties of solid waste.

Opis:
The microstructural evaluation of complex cementitious materials has been made possible by the microscopic imaging tools such as Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and X-Ray Microanalysis. Particularly, the application of concrete SEM imaging and digital image analysis have become common in the analysis and mapping of concrete technology. In this study, six samples of two-dimensional (2D) SEM images were spatially resampled to produce Geo-referenced SEM sample images. Subsequently, they were analyzed and the intensity histogram plot was produced to facilitate visual interpretation. The consecutive digital image analysis performed was the enhancement and noise removal process using two filtering methods i.e. median and adaptive box filter. The filtered resampled images, then undergone the unsupervised K-Means classification process to collectively separate each individual pixel corresponds to the spectral data. By spatial segmentation of K-Means algorithms, the cluster groups generated were carefully reviewed before proceeding to the final analysis. From the resulting data, the mapping of the spatial distribution of k-cluster and the quantification of micro-cracks (voids) were performed. The results of the SEM images (1st - 4th sample) showed a higher percentage of k-cluster data indicating a good correlation with the major elemental composition of EDX analysis, namely Oxide (O), Silicon (Si) and Carbon (C). Meanwhile, the subjective visual assessment of the image (5th and 6th sample) has confirmed the micro-crack developments on the concrete SEM images upon which the crack density was 3.02 % and 1.30 %, respectively.
