    Research reveals a unique relationship between image representations and emotions. In this context, intrusive mental images could be especially unpleasant and distressing. On the other hand, because of their impact on emotions, images can serve as a support to self-regulation, including regulation of one’s own thoughts. In the article, a thought suppression strategy is proposed that uses images to fight harmful intrusions. This proposition is based on several research areas: studies on image representations properties, the “think/no-think” and the “white bear” thought suppression paradigms, and Lavie’s attention theory The strategy assumes the redirection of attention from unwanted content by using image representations in conditions of maximally freed-up cognitive control resources.

    Opis:
    Ichnofabric analysis, as a relatively young ichnological approach, has witnessed rapid growth, showing its usefulness in basin analysis, with special attention to palaeoenvironmental interpretations. The ichnofabric approach has evolved from the description of trace composition and the intensity of bioturbation to integrate detailed information on numerous ichnofabric features, such as primary sedimentary structures, ichnological diversity, ichnological features, cross-cutting relation ships or tiering structures. This development has been associated with its application to the study of deep-sea sediments, especially in research on cores, which is not easy, owing to the particular features of cores. Here a method for improving ichnofabric characterization in modern marine cores is presented, on the basis of digital high-resolution image treatment, with special emphasis on the quantification of ichnofabric attributes. The proposed methodology is based on the modification of three image adjustments (image adjustment), the estimation of the percentage of the area occupied by bioturbation (digital estimation), the lateral and vertical quantification and comparison of pixel values for the infill of the trace fossils and the host sediment (pixel counting), and the integration of the information obtained in the visual representations of ichnofabrics (the ichnofabric representation). The sequential application of these proposed steps allow, 1) better identification of trace fossils, together with cross-cutting relation ships and the characterization of trace-fossil assemblages, 2) estimation of the percent age of bioturbation associated to each ichnotaxon, the whole ichnocoenosis, or a complete ichnofabric, 3) differentiation between biodeformational structures and trace fossils, discrimination between ichnotaxa, distinction between passively and actively infilled structures, and 4) evaluation of the depth of penetration by particular tracemakers.

    The purpose of this article is to provide a theoretical framework for the contemporary process of political communication. It emphasizes the changing roles of the senders/receivers within the process and it postulates unprecedented opportunities offered by the emergence of the New Media. As for the empirical research, we discuss the results of the study that has been conducted to further the understanding of how the younger generation, aged 20-25 (herein referred to as Digital Natives), process and comprehend the news media content, with special attention to political messages. It was initially hypothesized that the main source of information about politics and the surrounding world is the Internet and the social media in particular. The paper discusses the results of the study showing that the alternative news websites and social media, understood as the opposite to what is known as the mainstream media, have been gaining ground. Concurrently, the study discovered the students’ declining interest in traditional institutional mainstream-controlled media (i.e. press, radio or television).

    This article presents the results of the empirical study of social representations of high school teachers in the conflict resolution with students. It is revealed that the social representations of conflict and non-conflict teachers about conflict resolution with students differ in characteristics such as resolution – avoidance, orientation in conflict resolution with students on their own interests and the interests of the other, which determines the variability of actions in resolving the conflict.

    This paper explores the concept of acqua in Italian on the basis of linguistic data coming from: the Corpus della Repubblica, the Dizionario Treccani, the Dizionario delle collocazioni (Tiberii 2012) and the Dizionario Combinatorio Compatto Italiano (Lo Cascio 2012). First, the following phrases in acqua, sull’acqua and per acqua have been analyzed using image schemas such as: container, surface and path. Second, three conceptual metaphors have been formulated after the analysis of specific metaphoric language in context drawn from the Corpus della Repubblica. The analyzed instances of metaphoric extensions of acqua (source – domain) allow for the understanding of target domains such as: DESTRUCTIVE FORCES, DANGERS and ENEMIES. On the one hand, the research has proven that image schemas structure perceptual experience and consequently the meaning of linguistic expressions such as: in acqua, sull’acqua and per acqua. On the other, it has revealed the importance of conceptual metaphor in shaping the comprehension of the concept of acqua in Italian.

    “Drugo telo”. It reveals that the mental construction mechanism of spatial images is based on the principle of complementarity of verbal and non-verbal languages, that is, on the principle of multimodal information coding. There are visual, auditory, tactile and other images behind the verbal text. The reliability of mental spatial images is ensured by the detail of the memories on which the reader relies during the interpretation of the text. The realism of the perception of the text is prepared by the fact that iconic non-verbal pictures are stored in the reader's memory behind the verbal indexes.
    Artykuł poświęcony jest problematyce konstruowania obrazów przestrzennych w powieści Milorada Pavica Drugo telo. Okazało się, że mechanizm mentalnej konstrukcji obrazów przestrzennych opiera się na zasadzie komplementarności języków werbalnych i niewerbalnych, czyli na zasadzie multimodalnego kodowania informacji. Za tekstem werbalnym kryją się obrazy wizualne, dźwiękowe, dotykowe i inne. Wiarygodność mentalnych obrazów przestrzennych zapewnia szczegółowość wspomnień, na których opiera się czytelnik podczas interpretacji tekstu. Realizm percepcji tekstu przygotowuje fakt, że ikoniczne obrazy są przechowywane w pamięci czytelnika za indeksami werbalnymi.

    The authors trace the functioning and interaction of cultural paradigms that determine the time of a long duration. The article discusses some mechanisms of the influence of these paradigms on the modern literary process. The focus of the authors of the article is the study of the literary process by the example of the work of Andrey Platonov and Venedikt Yerofeyev. Analyzed are the prerequisites for changing the boundaries of the dialogue with different cultures, which have become a spiritual reflection of the world-systemic connections of the modern world. The authors trace how spatial, temporal representations and ritual practices are reanimated in the imaginative world of writers, and also study the mechanisms that give rise to deep traditional layers of consciousness, such as trauma, disintegration and drama.

    In the undertaken study, the understanding of the concepts of citizenship and nationality by the Polish young people, I assume that these categories are essential in terms of shaping the national identity of the individual. The system of concepts that define the personality of a human, the ability to reflect on their content, correctness, common connection, allows individuals to unite into a certain community. Thus, the analysis of linguistic ways of describing non-linguistic reality is also associated with the description of the mental representations of the individual, and therefore the ways – in cognitive processes – to relate to the world, to make an image of the world, to create knowledge about the world.
