    Opis:
    In this article we will subject visual forms of entry presentation found in monolingual learner's dictionaries to critical contrastive analysis. The characteristics of dictionaries under discussion, especially those addressed to foreign users, make them an essential language learning aid. The aim of the analysis is to identify which entries are effectively illustrated to constitute an effectual support of a verbal definition, and how it is achieved. The results of the analysis will indicate the possibilities and limits of illustrating concepts in dictionaries.

    Ovid’s Metamorphoses has inspired artists of various disciplines almost from the very moment of its creation. The poem has been the literary canvas of many paintings. It was particularly popular in the early modern period. Its numerous editions from the Middle Ages were decorated first with miniatures, and, after the invention of printing, with illustrations, made in the technique of woodcut, copperplate engraving, and etching. The composition of scenes known from the poem was based on a simultaneous and multi-thread narration and also, later, focused on one specific moment of the selected episode. The authorship of the illustrations found in early editions remains anonymous. The graphic designers of 16th c. and later editions are known by name: Jörg Wickram, Virgilio Solis, Bernard Solomon, Hendrick Goltzius, Francis Cleyn, Salomon Savery, Godfried Maes, and in the 20th c. Pablo Picasso. Ovid’s poem continues to be interpretated, as evidenced by the works of, for example, Kiki Smith and the Polish queer artist Mikolaj Sobczak.

    Moral education is one of the tasks of catechesis (cf. General Directory for Catechesis, No. 85-86). Te aim of this article is to analyze the importance of illustrations in moral upbringing of children in early school age. Te study is based on textbooks for religious instruction for pupils in grades I, II and III of primary school in Poland. Two series of handbooks have been examined: 1) issued by the publishing house “Wydawnictwo sw. Stanislawa” in Krakow and 2) issued by WAM publishing house in Krakow. Firstly, the importance of illustrations in school textbooks has been recalled, then all the images under consideration were listed and described in their content and adequacy for the moral education of children in early school age. Tis was done for the two mentioned series of catechisms. Te further analysis took place against the background of teaching methodology as well as the curriculum for catechesis. It shows that two series of catechisms vary significantly in terms of place and meaning attributed to the illustrations. In the textbooks published by “Wydawnictwo sw. Stanislawa” the iconic content dominates the text and is the starting point for the implementation of the lesson topic. Te textbooks published by WAM contain smaller illustrations are more of text, however the images are complementary to text or provide new information. Further development of textbooks for religious instruction in early childhood education must be based on the principle of primacy of illustration over the text. Images must be flawless in terms of quality, aesthetics and printing.
    Wychowanie moralne jest jednym z zadań katechezy (Dyrektorium ogólne o katechizacji, nr 85-86). Celem artykułu jest analiza znaczenia ilustracji w wychowaniu moralnym dzieci w młodszym wieku szkolnym. Materiałem do badań są podręczniki do nauki religii dla uczniów klas I, II i III szkoły podstawowej wydane przez wydawnictwo św. Stanisława w Krakowie oraz wydawnictwo WAM. Artykuł przypomina znaczenie ilustracji w podręcznikach szkolnych, a następnie zawiera tabelaryczne zestawienie i opis ilustracji z tych katechez, które dotyczą formacji moralnej w dwóch wymienionych seriach katechizmów. Analiza odbywa się na tle założeń metodycznych i treści podstawy programowej katechezy. Wynika z niej, że katechizmy różnią się wyraźnie pod względem miejsca i znaczenia, jakie przypisują ilustracjom. W podręcznikach wydawnictwa św. Stanisława warstwa ikoniczna dominuje nad tekstem i jest punktem wyjścia dla realizacji tematu lekcji. W podręcznikach wydawnictwa WAM jest więcej tekstu, a ilustracje są mniejsze, stanowią uzupełnienie tekstu lub podają nowe informacje. Dalszy rozwój podręczników do nauki religii w edukacji wczesnoszkolnej musi opierać się na zasadzie pierwszeństwa ilustracji nad tekstem. Materiał obrazowy musi być bez zarzutu pod względem jakości, pod względem estetycznym i technicznym.

    My paper deals with Veselye kartinki (Merry Pictures), a monthly children’s cartoon magazine launched by the Komsomol in 1956 and dedicated to the youngest generations of the “new socialists” (age 4–8). In its heydays in the early 1980s the magazine reached a circulation of 9,5 million, which indicates that Merry Pictures had become an essential part of post-Stalinist childhood. Generations of small readers found it attractive for several reasons. The journal was indeed comparatively “merry” und funny – not least because it was exempt from censorship, and so it was the only publication of that kind in the Soviet Union. Moreover, among its illustrators were a number of artists who are today well known for their participation in the nonconformist art scene (for example Ilya Kabakov and Victor Pivovarov), which gave the merry pictures their specific visual quality. The magazine proved to be an “image machine” even after the end of the Soviet Union. It survived the Soviet childhood by a good two decades and granted its characters, the little folks, an afterlife in the mass culture of the new Russia. However, this is not only the story of the magazine and its attempt to visually shape a newly created concept, arising with the Thaw, of a merry childhood that entered the currently emerging canon of visual socialism. Rather, there are two other, contradictory understandings of Merry Pictures and its Merry Folks’ Club that can be found currently. According to one, the Merry Folks are considered the first Soviet comic heroes, who were correspondingly free of politics and harmless for their readership. The other regards them as socialist “pathos formulas” in a format for children that populate the art of Moscow Conceptualists as thoroughly ideological Soviet symbols. This paper attempts to augment these two selective “remnants” with the primary history of Merry Pictures and demonstrate a productive arsenal of images and figures was developed over a half-century, precisely in the tension between everyday free spaces and political stipulations.

    Paleoart can be defined as all the original paleontological and paleoenvironmental reconstructions containing interpretations of the appearance of extinct organisms, constructed on the basis of current knowledge and scientific evidence present at the time of its creation. Paleoart’s purpose is to visualize the organic life in the past geological periods. The word paleoart is also used in other informal sense, as a name for prehistoric art, most often cave paintings. Alternative concept of this term is the domain of archeological society. The basic illustrations in paleoart are: 1) simple line arts, showing the remains of the organisms with the lining of the body and/or muscles and tissues, 2) skeletal reconstructions where the bones are usually depicted as white while the black background represents the body profile of the specimen when it was alive. Dominating in the popular scientific field, "life appearance” or "life restorations” illustrations shows how an extinct organism or biocenosis looked like during life. Life appearance models in paleoart split into two categories: material and virtual. The material models are made in a variety of scales, from small figurines to massive 1:1 scale sculptures. Virtual models are computer generated images of extinct animals. They are made mostly for the purpose of films and sometimes for studies. In Poland, paleoart is a small-scale activity for specialized artists and scientists. Despite the problems derived from the progress of interpretation in paleontology, paleoart has a major significance because it is a perfect manner of spreading knowledge to the society. It inspires and develops hypotheses of scientists concerning extinct organisms.

    The article titled “The borderland of bestiarium and humanitarium inreference to Jan Liebstein's illustrations in 'Animal Farm' by George Orwell” discusses selected depictions belonging to the cycle in the aspect of protagonists' formal affinity to Lebstein's bestiary, and mutual completing of the image and meaning of word.In his works, Lebstein often referred to the motif of hybrid beings, which blended features of different genres. Such beasts appeared in oil paintings, and both drawings and political caricatures,revealinga range of anti-communist views of the painter.The first part of the article is devoted to works belonging to these cycles. Subsequently, illustrations drawn for Orwel's piece are presented. Discussed problems pertain to Lebstein's manner of approaching history of society, individual's lots and the situation of enslavement by the totalitarian rule.The consecutive issue concerns the relation between the historic question of genre anduniversalism of the message in the book by means of the language of images. Particular attention was paid to creations of protagonists merging human and animal features and therefore eluding straightforward categorization. The last part of the article briefly juxtaposes depictions with functions of book illustrations.

    Mija osiemdziesiąta rocznica opublikowania przez profesora Juliusza Szymańskiego Synopsis Iconographiae Ophthalmicae, pierwszej tego typu publikacji w polskim piśmiennictwie okulistycznym. Atlas ten zawiera 180 ilustracji poświęconych różnym stanom chorobowym oczu. Wszystkie ilustracje opatrzone są dodatkowymi komentarzami wyjaśniającymi prezentowane stany chorobowe. Profesor Juliusz Szymański ukończył studia medyczne w Kijowie i poświęcił się okulistyce. Pracował na Dalekim Wschodzie. Po rewolucji 1905 r. wyemigrował do Stanów Zjednoczonych. Pracował jako docent w Rush Medical College w Chicago. Wyjechał następnie do Brazylii, gdzie w Kurytybie na Uniwersytecie Parana zorganizował klinikę okulistyczną i został jej profesorem. Od 1922 r. był profesorem okulistyki Uniwersytetu Stefana Batorego w Wilnie. Jest też autorem podręczników okulistyki w języku portugalskim oraz w języku polskim. Zajmował się również polityką. W latach 1928–1930 był senatorem, pełnił też funkcję marszałka Senatu. Po przejściu na emeryturę w 1935 r. przeniósł się do Warszawy i prowadził praktykę prywatną. W czasie okupacji niemieckiej był ordynatorem w Szpitalu Maltańskim w Warszawie. Ponownie wyemigrował w 1949 r. do Brazylii. Do Polski powrócił w 1957 r., zamieszkując w Białymstoku, gdzie zmarł rok później.
    It is the 80th anniversary of publishing Synopsis Iconographiae Ophthalmicae by Professor Juliusz Szymanski. It was the first publication of this type in Polish ophthalmological literature. The atlas contains 180 illustrations presenting different eye diseases. All illustrations are accompanied by additional explanatory notes on presented diseases. Professor Juliusz Szymanski graduated medical studies in Kiev and devoted his professional life to ophthalmology. He worked in Far East. After the Revolution of 1905 he emigrated to the United States. He worked as an assistant professor in Rush Medical College in Chicago. Afterwards, he moved to Brazil. He organized an ophthalmology clinic at the University of Parana in Curitiba, the Professor of which he consequently became. In 1922 he was entitled the Professor of ophthalmology of the University of Stefan Batory in Vilnius. He is the author of manuals on ophthalmology in Portuguese and Polish. He was also involved in politics. In the years 1928–1930 he was elected a senator. He also held the position of the President of the Senate. He retired in 1935 and moved to Warsaw where he started his own practice. During the Nazi occupation he worked at Maltese Hospital in Warsaw. In 1949 he emigrated to Brazil one more time. He returned to Poland in 1957 to settle in Bialystok where he died one year later.

    The paper includes the analyses of three books of poems by Paweł Beręsewicz: Lalki Dorotki [Dorotka’s dolls] (2004), Czy pisarzom burczy w brzuchu? [Do writers’ stomachs grumble?] (2009) oraz Złota jedenastka… [The golden eleven…] (2018). The author studies language, composition, the voice and characters creation, as well as the main idea of the three books, also paying attention to illustrations. She reconstructs the status of a speaker and a recipient, and their relationship (i.e. an adult–child relationship). It is also an attempt to place Beręsewicz’s books of poems in the context of his stories and novels.

    Shaping full personality includes an introduction to cultural messages understanding and requires preparation from the earliest years of life. The use of picture books and book illustrations as the key assumption in visual education of children. Picture books represent the first artistic medium as the primary carrier of aesthetic values and a potential chance to stimulate cognitive, social development of a child. History of Polish picture book dates back to the turn of XIX and XX centuries. However, the realizations gaining more widespread range occurred much later. Krystyna Lipko-Sztarbałło, a graphic artist and an animator of Polish book for children, has been of key importance for the development of Polish picture book for the last twenty-odd years. The significance of the illustrations book in child development is proven by the examples of graphic designs taken from Krystyna Lipka-Sztarbałło’s works.

    The article address certain problems connected with illustrating Julian Tuwim’s poems for children, or, in other words, translating them into images. It approaches this issue from the perspective of a specialist in visual communication rather than a literary scholar. The observations made by the author are based on a survey conducted among the illustrators of one of the most well-known, recent editions of Tuwim’s poems and the first-year students of graphic design at the Pedagogical University of Cracow. The article points to a number of challenges that a contemporary illustrator of Tuwim’s works is faced with.

    Janina Porazińska is the author of books for children which gained the status of school readings, that is, publications which are quite widespread based on their common educational and cultural content. Their presence in the program recommendations regarding school readings since 1983 undoubtedly helped them to gain such popularity.The value of the book could be enhanced by many factors among which we can enumerate illustrations, particularly important in the education of small children. Porazińska’s publications presented rich as well as aesthetically valuable layout both in the interwar period (Stanislaw Bobiński, Michal Bylina, Antoni Gawiński, Zofia Stryjeńska, Nicholas Wisznicki) as well as in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Contemporary works of Porazińska were illustrated by Aleksandra Michal-ska-Szwagierczak or Elizabeth Krygowska-Butlewska. However, it was observed that too often other publications, that present so called ‘Disney’ style illustrations and do not care too much about the aesthetic aspect of students’ development, are chosen and recommended as school readings. Therefore, it is important to focus parents’ and teachers’ attention on these aspects of shaping the aesthetic tastes of pupils especially during their early school years.
    Janina Porazińska jest autorką utworów dla dzieci, które zyskały miano lektur szkolnych, czyli wydań książkowych o najpowszechniejszym zasięgu edukacyjnym i kulturowym. Do uzyskania przez nie popularności przyczyniła się niewątpliwie stała, do 1983 roku, ich obecność w programowych zaleceniach odnośnie do lektur szkolnych. Na wartość książki wpływają między innymi ilustracje, szczególnie ważne w edukacji dzieci. Publikacje Porazińskiej otrzymywały bogatą i wartościową pod względem estetycznym szatę graficzną, zarówno w okresie międzywojen-nym (Stanisław Bobiński, Michał Bylina, Antoni Gawiński, Zofia Stryjeńska, Mikołaj Wisznicki), jak i w latach 50., 60. i 70. XX wieku. Współcześnie utwory Porazińskiej ilustrowały Aleksandra Michalska-Szwagierczak, Elżbieta Krygow-ska-Butlewska. Zbyt często jednak w praktyce szkolnej wybierane są opracowania w stylistyce disnejowskiej, w której nie dba się o rozwój wrażliwości wizualnej ucznia. Ważna jest czujność nauczycieli i rodziców w kształtowaniu estetycznych upodobań uczniów wczesnoszkolnych.

    Artykuł jest poświęcony analizie relacji bohaterów w serii książek o Pettsonie i Findusie. Przedstawia wizualną charakterystykę postaci między innymi w kontekście przestrzeni domu i otaczającej przyrody. Ilustracje Nordqvista dekonstruują powszechne wyobrażenia na temat dzieciństwa i dorosłości, ironicznie obnażając podporządkowanie konwenansom i wagę hierarchicznego porządku świata. Jest to ponadto wizja postawy współczującej, otwartej na inność. Sztuka Nordqvista kontynuuje pod tym względem myśl filozoficzną zawartą w pismach Janusza Korczaka.
    The article „Ethical gaze: the visual art of Sven Nordqvist” discusses the relationship between the two characters in the artist’s Festus and Mercury books and the narrative role played in this context by the space in which they live. Nordqvist’s illustrations deconstruct common notions of childhood and adulthood and ironically expose conventionality and hierarchical order often accepted unquestioningly by adults. The artist’s characterisation of the protagonists puts special emphasis on their compassionate attitude and concern for the other. Nordqvist’s visual art thus becomes a continuation of Janusz Korczak’s educational philosophy.

    W artykule zaprezentowano wyniki badań szaty graficznej dziewiętnastu polskich czasopism popularnonaukowych ukazujących się w XIX wieku w Warszawie, Puławach, Poznaniu, Lesznie, Lwowie, Krakowie i Tarnowie. Wyodrębniono najczęściej podejmowaną tematykę ilustracji i ustalono autorów większości sygnowanych rycin. Wykazano znaczenie ilustracji dla popularyzacji nauki w czasopismach tego okresu.

    Opis:
    Picture books and illustrations provide children fine art contact and first visual communication experience. Therefore, it is important for them to have their place in the child’s daily routine and to be valuable in terms of cognitive and aesthetic stimuli. A place where a toddler can experience them – next to the family home – is a kindergarten, so teachers should have the competence to introduce a child into the world of book illustration. Above all, teachers ought to express personal involvement in the evaluation of such cultural texts. The paper outlines the value of book illustrations which are perceived and preferred by people who are preparing for the profession of early childhood education teacher. The subjects assessed illustrations made in different conventions and stylistics (realistic and fantastic, classic and avant-garde) and made with various techniques (painting and graphic). The assembled lexical corpus, perceiving perceptions of the illustration, was analysed from the perspective of the category of paintings evaluation and the lexical assessment category, which expressed a personal attitude to the perceived images.
    Kontakt ze sztuką plastyczną i pierwsze doświadczenia w komunikacji wizualnej zapewniają dziecku książki obrazkowe i ilustrowane. Dlatego istotne jest, by miały one określone miejsce w codzienności dziecka i by zapewniały wartościowe pod względem poznawczym i estetycznym bodźce. Miejscem, gdzie małe dziecko może ich doświadczać – obok przestrzeni domu rodzinnego – jest przedszkole, dlatego nauczyciele powinni posiadać kompetencje związane z wprowadzaniem wychowanka w świat dobrej ilustracji książkowej, a przede wszystkim wyrażać osobiste zaangażowanie w wartościowanie tego rodzaju tekstów kultury. W opracowaniu przedstawiono, jakie wartości ilustracji książkowych postrzegają i preferują osoby przygotowujące się do zawodu nauczyciela wczesnej edukacji. Badani wartościowali ilustracje wykonane w różnych konwencjach i stylistyce (realistycznej i fantastycznej, klasyczne i awangardowe) oraz wykonane różnymi technikami (malarskimi i graficznymi). Zgromadzony korpus leksykalny, dotyczący odczuć związanych z percepcją ilustracji książkowej, analizowano z perspektywy kategorii ocen dzieł malarskich oraz kategorii wartościowania leksykalnego, wyrażającego osobisty stosunek do percypowanych obrazów.

    Celem artykułu jest ukazanie wzajemnych relacji sztuk plastycznych, ceremoniału oraz publicystyki w propagandzie politycznej Rzeczypospolitej czasów Augusta III, na kluczowym dla ówczesnego życia publicznego przykładzie – sporze o ordynację ostrogską. W satyrycznej Scenie tragiczno-komicznej zawarcie tzw. transakcji kolbuszowskiej, sankcjonującej podział ordynacji, przedstawione zostało jako akt bezprawia – parodia sądów Rzeczypospolitej. Z przekazu zawartego w rycinach rozprawy Piotra Hadziewicza, Prawda obiaśniona… wynikało, że jedność i ład w państwie muszą być oparte na przestrzeganiu praw, czego gwarantem jest król. August III utworzył obradującą w Dubnie komisję, mającą ocenić zasadność podziału ordynacji. Jej członkowie, akcentując legalność działań, przyjęli porządek obrad wzorowany na ceremoniale Trybunału Koronnego, instytucji silnie zakorzenionej w ówczesnym polskim systemie prawnym. Główni aktorzy „Nowego w Dubnie Trybunału”, jak określił komisję prymas Adam Komorowski, dbali o jednolity dla opinii publicznej przekaz: zgodnej pracy dla odtworzenia ładu prawnego w Rzeczypospolitej, co doskonale korespondowało z treściami ówczesnej grafiki i satyry.
    This article aims to show the interrelation between the visual arts, ceremonials and journalistic opinion pieces in the political propaganda of the Polish-Lithuanian Republic during the reign of King Augustus III, using an example which was of vital importance for the public life of that time – the dispute over the entail of the Ostrogski estate. In the satirical Tragic-Comic Scene, the conclusion of the so-called Kolbuszowa Transaction, sanctioning the division of the estate’s entail, was presented as a parody of the courts then operating in the Republic. The illustrations for Piotr Hadziewicz’s dissertation Prawda obiaśniona… conveyed the message that the unity and order of the state must be based upon the observance of its laws, with the King being the guarantor of the legal order. The king established a special commission, known as the Dubno Commission, which was to assess the legal and factual status related to the division of the Ostrogski estate. The committee members strongly emphasised the legality of their actions. They adopted a ceremonial which was modelled on the ceremonies of the Crown Tribunal, an institution deeply rooted in the Polish legal system of that time. The main actors of the “new Tribunal in Dubno”, as Primate Adam Ignacy Komorowski described the Commission, made sure that a uniform message was sent out to the public: that of the harmonious work by the Commission to restore the legal order in the Republic. This message perfectly corresponded with the content of the illustrations and satire of that period.
