Opis:
The paper presents the influence of social context on illocutionary metonymy in directives evoked by various elements of request scenarios. As the human language activity reflects the physical and social worlds of the intersubjective context (cf. Verschueren 1999), the recognized and construed social relations have an impact not only on addressive forms, but also on the appearance of other elements such as indirectness and its scalarity.Indirect directives are based on illocutionary metonymic scenarios (Panther and Thornburg 1998) and by evoking a part of the scenario referring to the core action they give access to the illocutionary scenario domain. The scalar nature of indirectness (Panther and Thornburg 1998, see also Panther and Thornburg 1999, 2007 and Thornburg and Panther 1997), depends on the number of evoked elements and their conceptual distance from the core of the request. It can be based on conventional grammatical structures (e.g. auxiliary verbs) or giving hints by only introducing the action scenario. As Veres-Guśpiel (2013)  has shown the chosen type of indirectness is influenced by social context and the weight of a directive (for the latter, see also Csató and Pléh 1988, Pléh 2012).The main question of the presented research regards types of illocutionary metonymy, that can be experienced in various social contexts and what their frequency of use is.

Opis:
The present paper aims to investigate which types of speech acts play a dominant role in the texts of online job advertisements, to what extent those acts are realised indirectly, and what purposes this indirectness may serve. The research is based on an analysis of a corpus comprising 100 online recruitment ads, of which 60 appeared in the Internet editions of three major UK newspapers, and the remaining 40 were found on two of the leading UK job portals. Methodologically the study is grounded in the cognitive approach to speech act theory, whereby the speech act taxonomy as proposed by J. Searle is treated as prototypical categorisation enhancing the organisation and systematicity of the analysis. The findings indicate that over a half of the micro-acts identified in the sample are realised indirectly. The two largest categories comprise assertions and ‘complex’/ambiguous micro-acts, both performing the functions of boasting and promising, and thus contributing to the overall persuasive appeal of recruitment ads.

A recent view about disagreement (Karczewska 2021) takes it to consist in the tension arising from proposals and refusals of these proposals to impose certain commitments on the interlocutors in a conversation. This view has been proposed with the aim of solving the problem that “faultless disagreement” – a situation in which two interlocutors are intuited to be both in disagreement and not at fault – poses for contextualism about predicates of taste. In this paper, I consider whether this view applies equally well to disagreements involving aesthetic adjectives. I show, first, that it applies quite straightforwardly to predicates like “beautiful,” which presumably generate faultless disagreement. However, aesthetic adjectives like “beautiful” don’t exhaust the aesthetic sphere. A term like “balanced,” for example, while still perspectival, is said to have a more “objective” feel and usually doesn’t generate faultless disagreement: when the novice and the expert disagree on using such a term, we take it that the expert is right and the novice is wrong. I argue that Karczewska’s view has trouble explaining this difference in the profile of the two types of aesthetic predicates vis-à-vis the generation of disagreement. I also consider possible ways of coping with this problem, but I then reject them and propose a different one that is suitable for most views in the debate.

Participants in a conversational exchange may express their viewpoints in a number of ways, or put more precisely, they use various ways of expressing their viewpoints. When employing phrases such as It is likely that ..., perhaps ..., actually ..., it is possible that..., and I think that ..., etc., speakers modify the meaning, or the illocutionary force, of the utterances they make. This feature, which has been called ‘modality’, is present, among others, in the genre of political interview and serves various functions. The present contribution offers an inquiry into the linguistic means that politicians utilize to modify their involvement in, or their detachment from, the proposition and in this way they alter the meaning of their statements.

Within the Gricean framework in pragmatics, communication is understood as an inferential activity. Other approaches to the study of linguistic communication have contended that language is argumentative in some essential sense. My aim is to study the question of whether and how the practices of inferring and arguing can be taken to contribute to meaning in linguistic communication. I shall suggest a two-fold hypothesis. First, what makes of communication an inferential activity is given with its calculability, i.e. with the possibility to rationally recover the assigned meaning by means of an explicit inference. Secondly, the normative positions that we recognize and assign each other with our speech acts comprise obligations and rights of a dialectical character; but this fact does not entail nor presuppose an argumentative nature in language or speech. Both inferring and arguing are needed, however, in the activity of justifying and assessing our speech acts.

In recent years, the economic situation in particular has been a factor influencing life of the societies, arousing public attention. Additionally, press commentaries on those issues are relatively easy to access for an average reader. In an era of increasing supremacy of electronic media in communication, the comments published online are becoming dominant, so the currenl tendencies in the language may be traced in them. That is the reason behind choosing online publication as a research corpus for this article. In the examined texts, linguistic means of persuasion háve been analyzed. Those means, despile the ongoing process of globalization are still determined culturally. A tool that permits to comprehend the similarities and discrepancies is, among oth- ers, examining illocutionary structures in the texts. A method relatively popular in 1980s and 1990s, especially in German linguistics, later subject to severe criticism. The article shows the potential of the above-mentioned method in press commentaries ex- amination, al the same limę however, an analysis of argumentative structures was car- ried out. The latter permitted to capture the quantitalive dominance o f certain arguments (deontological and ethical-aesthetic), while employing the analysis of illocutionary structures allowed for determining their role in the structural hierarchy, therefore to con- clude which of the arguments play the superior, and which the supportive role. Moreover, the corpus comprising the Polish and German online press publications constitutes interesting research materiał in terms of changes in the presentation of the text, that is to formulate questions about the boundaries of individual genres, about the freedom of the reader in choosing the „modules” on the Internet or, consequently, about the reader’s responsibility for the text crealed this way.

Opis:
This article evokes the main arguments put forth by Polish theater scholars with regard to dramatic dialogue and its distinctive features. The author foregrounds the value of Sławomir Świontek’s research: although dating from thirty years ago and rarely discussed, today his findings invite us to resume theoretical considerations on dialogue and to seek new methodological tools. Drawing on Świontek’s observations, the author proposes to look at dramatic dialogue from the perspective of speech acts: locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary. He focuses on the illocutionary potential of dialogue, which is linked to how the text is to be performed and helps to bring out meanings and emotions that are not revealed in silent reading. He emphasizes that a multifaceted analysis of the illocutionary potential of dialogue can lead to determining the felicity conditions for drama performance. The author postulates the interdisciplinarity of this kind of research, as the synergy of multiple perspectives – cultural, anthropological, linguistic, theatrological, and philosophical – can help deepen and systematize knowledge about genre transformations in drama and their link to the changing communication principles and techniques.

The article is a study that proposes a semantic-pragmatic description of the I love you formula. It first presents the formula’s general properties, including its degree of fixation, syntactic autonomy, meaning, and polyfunctional character. Then, particular attention is paid to the different values it can have as a direct or indirect act in a specific interactional framework. The study of the corpus of this work allowed us to identify two types of use of the above-mentioned formula: prototypical and non-prototypical use. In the first case, I love you is used to perform either an expressive or an assertive act. In the second case, it is an indirect act whose interpretation is inferred from the cotext. The analysis also highlights the social nature of interactions and the significance of the interactional context for interpreting the types of language acts in which the I love you formula occurs.

In particular, an attempt is made to show that ethical examination of the utterance can consist in analyzing its illocution (intention) and perlocution (effect). Additionally, it is proposed that treating a speech act as complementary can be used in the analysis of utterances as those which demand ethical or non-ethical answer.

Opis:
In contrast to Derrida and Butler, who overemphasized the subversive force of performatives, here the focus is on the immanent (micro-)sovereign power of performative utterances. Hence, what is proposed here is a search for the basic concept of power at the micro-level of speech acts. Before being codified with reference to certain stable power relations or contexts and before being objectified in different forms of domination and/or violence, power must be analyzed at the level of immediate performatives, where the struggle for power-codification could be followed in vivo. A task like this requires a conceptual shift: the illocutionary force of speech acts must be reinterpreted as their immediate evaluative force, i.e. as illocutionary power. Taking into account Derrida’s critique of Austin’s theory of speech acts, we should recognize that performatives are not singular or atomistic speech acts, nor are they pre-determined by certain already given contexts or procedures. They are embedded in a citation and trace signs, without any final or autonomous signification. And yet, performatives have a specific kind of sovereignty. It is not the sovereignty of the ‘act’ itself but of the act’s performance. The actual (in the sense of ‘ongoing’) performance has an immediate force that is irreversible and also non-citable. Even in the case of a direct citation, a citing performance sediments into an irreversible arrow, thus immediately reordering and re-evaluating all points in its trajectory. This performance does not fulfill a perspective, but it irreversibly forms a perspective. This effect of the virtuosity of an immediate performance could be called the power effect since it not only demonstrates how we make things with words, but also how we re-evaluate the things that were made through words. If an ongoing performance is such an immediate source of micro-power, then its role is not only to be ironically subversive and resistant to the already existing macro-codifications of power and domination. Performatives have their own sovereign power and are therefore capable of a direct affirmation and re-affirmation of the intersubjective frames of our experience.
