    The article analyzes In the Darkroom by Susan Faludi as representing filial narratives – biographies of a parent reconstructed and told by a son or a daughter, as well as post-memory literature – a reflection of the inherited trauma mediated by generational successors. The text demonstrates spatial entanglements in which the author’s father made his metamorphosis: from a Hungarian Jew, István Friedman, through an American photographer Steven Faludi, to a Hungarian woman, pensioner and patriot Stef´anie Faludi. Thus, the paper reconstructs the threads present in this book – a combination of geographical and historical contexts determining the individual identity choices made by each of us.

    This article presents an analysis of a fragment of a larger study on transgender individuals. In this study, the authors focused exclusively on the experience of gender incongruence; the conflict between gender identity and the gender conferred at birth. In order to clearly explain the scope of this study, the first part of the article presents transgender theories, and those related to identity and gender identity. The second part of the article presents strategies for combatting gender incongruence. These are developed on the basis of the collected empirical material, and through consideration of evidence concerning whether gender incongruence had a significant impact on the formation of the personal and social identity of transgender individuals. The research was based on a qualitative approach, with the main technique employed being a free-form interview. The research was performed throughout the whole of Poland.
    W artykule zaprezentowane zostały wyniki analizy fragmentu większych badań nad transpłciowością, obejmujących dzieciństwo transpłciowego dziecka, ujawnienie swojej właściwej tożsamości płciowej rodzinie i bliskim, otrzymane wsparcie lub jego brak, przebieg terapii hormonalnej, zabiegów chirurgicznych, procesu sądowego etc. W niniejszym artykule autorki koncentrują się wyłącznie na prezentacji wyników analizy dotyczącej doświadczenia niezgodności płci – konfliktu między tożsamością płciową a płcią przypisaną przy urodzeniu, a zatem przedmiotem analizy uczyniły opinie, wypowiedzi osób transpłciowych doświadczających niezgodności płci. W trosce o czytelność podjętej problematyki w pierwszej części przedstawione zostały stanowiska teoretyczne związane z transpłciowością, tożsamością oraz tożsamością płciową. W drugiej zaś zaprezentowane zostały strategie radzenia sobie z niezgodnością płciową, opracowane przez badaczki na podstawie zgromadzonego materiału empirycznego. Autorki w prezentacji wyników analizy uwzględniły odpowiedzi na pytania, czy niezgodność płciowa miała znaczący wpływ na kształtowanie się tożsamości osobistej i społecznej osób transpłciowych, uczestniczących w badaniu. Metodologia badania, procedura badawcza oraz analiza osadzone zostały w podejściu jakościowym. Główną techniką był wywiad swobodny ukierunkowany. Teren badań obejmował całą Polskę – w badaniu uczestniczyło 16 osób.

    National construction has been the object of close attention of scientists. One of the main aspects is how nation-building and development of political representation institutions influence each other. The Russian case is interesting because of growing contradiction between the current vector of national construction and the urgent need to protect human and civil rights and freedoms, democratic mechanisms of coordination, control and participation . The issue of national construction in post-Soviet Russia in Russian historiography is not only debatable, but also politicized. Valery A. Tishkov and his colleagues from the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Russian Academy of Sciences appeal to the state identity, which occupies the first position in the set of identities, as the key marker of the fully-formed political nation. Dmitry Oreshkin, Emil Pain indicate that Russian society has not yet found an answer to the key question for the formation of community – “Who we are in relation to power?” This, coupled with the actualization of the public demand for democracy, brings us back to the problems of democratic transition not only in terms of the “transit of power”. Of course, it is impossible to uncover fully and deeply the Russian national construction issue within the relatively small text. The main object of this paper is to propose a general framework, conceptual foundations for analyzing the problem. The Russian conditions, factors, and subjects of national construction are in focus too. The preliminary findings should be discussed in scientific communities.
    Konstrukcja narodowa jest tradycyjnie przedmiotem ścisłej uwagi naukowców, a jednym z aspektów budzących niesłabnące zainteresowanie jest wzajemny wpływ procesów formowania narodu oraz tworzenia i rozwoju instytucji reprezentacji politycznej. Znaczenie przypadku rosyjskiego wynika nie tylko z nieudanej próby przejścia do demokracji, niepolegającej na podstawach uformowanego narodu politycznego, ale również z rosnącej sprzeczności między obecnym wektorem konstruowania narodowego a potrzebą społeczeństwa w zakresie ochrony praw i wolności człowieka i obywatela, w demokratycznych mechanizmach koordynacji, kontroli i uczestnictwa. W rosyjskiej historiografii kwestia tworzenia konstrukcji narodowej w postsowieckiej Rosji jest nie tylko dyskusyjna, ale także w dużej mierze upolityczniona. Walerij Tiszkow i koledzy z Instytutu Etnologii i Antropologii Rosyjskiej Akademii Nauk odwołują się do tożsamości państwowej, która zajmuje pierwsze miejsce w zestawie tożsamości, jako kluczowy marker ustalonego narodu politycznego. Leokadia Drobizheva, mówiąc o tożsamości narodowo-obywatelskiej, zauważa, że tak ważne właściwości, jak odpowiedzialność, aktywność społeczno-polityczna, zaufanie i solidarność obywatelska są w trakcie formowania. Dmitrij Oreshkin, Emil Pain zwracają uwagę, że rosyjskie społeczeństwo wciąż nie znalazło odpowiedzi na kluczowe pytanie dotyczące utworzenia wspólnoty – „kim jesteśmy w stosunku do władz?”. To, w połączeniu z aktualizacją publicznego popytu na demokrację, przywraca nas do kwestii demokratycznego tranzytu, nie tylko w kategoriach „tranzytu władzy”. Oczywiście w stosunkowo niewielkim tekście nie można kompleksowo i głęboko ujawnić problemów rosyjskiego procesu budowania narodowego. Głównym zadaniem badawczym jest raczej propozycja ogólnych ram dla analizy problemu. Oprócz podstaw koncepcyjnych tekst omawia warunki, czynniki, a także tematykę procesu budowania narodowego we współczesnej Rosji.
    Национальное строительство традиционно является объектом пристального внимания учёных и одним из аспектов, вызывающих неослабевающий интерес, выступает взаимовлияние процессов нациестроительства и создания, развития институтов политического представительства. Актуальность исследования российского случая обусловлена не только безуспешной попыткой перейти к демократии, не опираясь на фундамент сформировавшейся политической нации, но и обостряющимся противоречием между нынешним вектором национального строительства и потребностью общества в защите прав и свобод человека и гражданина, в демократических механизмах согласования, контроля и участия. В российской историографии вопрос о национальном строительстве в постсоветской России является не только дискуссионным, но и в значительной степени политизированным. Валерий Тишков с коллегами из Института этнологии и антропологии РАН апеллируют к государственной идентичности, занимающей первую позицию в наборе идентичностей, как к ключевому маркеру сложившейся политической нации. Михаил Горшков, Владимир Петухов, Наталья Тихонова считают, что этого не достаточно. Леокадия Дробижева, говоря о национально-гражданской идентичности, отмечает, что такие важные для неё свойства как ответственность, общественно- политическая активность, доверие и гражданская солидарность, находятся в стадии формирования. Дмитрий Орешкин, Эмиль Паин указывают на то, что российское общество всё ещё не нашло ответа на ключевой для формирования общности вопрос – «Кто мы по отношению к власти?». Это, в купе с актуализацией общественного запроса на демократию, возвращает нас к проблематике демократического транзита не только в плане «транзита власти». Безусловно, в пределах относительно небольшого текста невозможно всесторонне и глубоко раскрыть проблематику российского процесса национального строительства. Основная исследовательская задача видится скорее в предложении общих рамок анализа проблемы. Помимо концептуальных оснований в тексте рассматриваются условия, факторы, а также субъекты процесса национального строительства в современной России.

    Betrothal or marriage may be treated as a kind of a social institution and is described in categories of patterns associated with performing the role of a fiancé, wife or husband. Engagement and marriage also determine new periods in life and can be viewed through a prism of individual experiences of individuals. In the postmodern society identities are no longer received automatically through the rituals and social practices of the traditional social order. The self has become a reflective project. Based on the In-Depth Personal Interviews, the paper examines how young spouses perceive themselves and how their ‘significant others’ perceive them after the betrothal and after marriage. This paper is based mainly on the results of the author’s study carried out in 2014 (25 husbands and other 25 wives; different social status; duration of the marriage 3-24 months). The range of the changes differs among men and women, among premarital cohabitants and non-cohabitants, most often, being connected with the changes in the sense of adulthood, responsibility and the self-esteem. Irrespectively of the quality of emotions experienced, in the majority of respondents only the day of premarital cohabitation or the marriage ceremony itself forced the reorganisation of their self-image.
    Narzeczeństwo i małżeństwo można traktować nie tylko jako instytucje społeczne, ale jako punkty zwrotne, które poprzez zmianę statusu jednostki rozpoczynają i określają kolejne etapy w biografii, wywierając wpływ na indywidualne doświadczenia jednostek. Celem opracowania jest analiza zakresu redefinicji „ja”: zmian poczucia tożsamości oraz zmian tożsamości społecznej w związku z przechodzeniem od statusu osoby stanu wolnego do bycia małżonkiem. Podstawą jest część autorskiego badania o charakterze jakościowym zrealizowanym w roku 2014 techniką pogłębionego wywiadu indywidualnego. Badaniami objęto 25 zamężnych kobiet i 25 żonatych mężczyzn, których staż małżeński w chwili badania wynosił od 3 do 24 miesięcy. Uzyskane wyniki wskazują, że zakres zmian różni się w zależności od płci, obecności kohabitacji przedzaręczynowej w biografii, niemniej najczęściej transformacje wiążą się z poczuciem własnej wartości, dojrzałości oraz zakresu odpowiedzialności. Niezależnie od rodzaju doświadczanych emocji dla większości respondentów jedynie rozpoczęcie kohabitacji lub ceremonia małżeństwa reorganizuje koncepcję „ja”.

    The paper presents the theoretical hypotheses and research results conducted with the use of Transition from Education to Work Scale. Basing on the analysis of particular theories regarding the transition from education to work as well as selfdevelopment theory it has been noted that assumption of employment by graduates does not solely depend on labor market condition and their academic achievements but also on the level of identity development and appropriate assessment of one’s own skills and abilities. From the assumed perspective the transition from education to work is a long lasting and complex developmental task where accurate and thorough self assessment skills and readiness to achieve compromises between expectations and possibilities related to career development are of crucial importance.

    Objective: This paper provides a comprehensive investigation of coping with distress, with a focus on the proactive approach, which is of particular significance for individuals who manage identity transitions periods. Researchers discuss findings from two independent projects analyzing individual variation in strategies for coping with difficult situations at the extremes of life: adolescence and old age. Both studies were conducted between 2014 and 2016. Proactivity preferences were analyzed in a sample of 332 adolescents. Similarly, results collected among 1552 seniors were analyzed. The tools used in the analysis were the Proactive Coping Inventory for Adolescents (PCI-A) and the Proactive Coping Inventory for Adults (PCI). Results: Our findings show that the strategies preferred by the adolescent group included: proactive coping, looking for emotional support and preventive coping. Whereas the results for the elderly group showed their preference for looking for emotional support, reflective and preventive coping. Nevertheless the proactive coping strategy was chosen by adolescents as well as the elderly. The analysis performed demonstrated no significant difference in the reflective coping strategy for the compared age groups. Conclusions: The findings can be explained by theoretical accounts that question the classical developmental models with normative life trajectories and develop more person-oriented idiographic approach with decollectivisation of the life course thesis (Loos, 2012)  becoming increasingly evident.   Key words: proactiveness, adolescence, ageing, transition, identity, medical practise, education

    The independence of newly born (or reborn) states at the end of 1918 raised the question of the future of the aristocratic families who had built their position in the pre‑war empires. An interesting example of such dilemmas arose in Poland. This was connected with the fate of two originally German‑speaking families. One of them was a branch of the imperial Habsburg family that settled in Żywiec (German: Saybush) in western Galicia. The other: rich and powerful family of Hofburg von Pless having their main seat in Pszczyna (German: Pless) in Prussian Upper Silesia. They were both members of the absolute elite of European aristocracy, being related to many noble and royal families and playing important roles in the political and economic life of Austro‑Hungary and Germany. What they also had in common was the fact, that their estates were located in a borderland between different ethnic and national groups. After the end of World War One, almost all these properties became part of the independent Polish state. As a result, the new administration treated the families with serious distrust. However, their national choices were different: the Habsburgs of Żywiec started to consider themselves as pure Polish, while the Hofburgs radically adhered to their German self‑identity. This article shows what the criteria were behind these choices.

    In response to recent controversies about racial transitioning, I provide an argument that deceptions about ancestry may sometimes constitute fraud. In order to arrive at this conclusion, I criticize the arguments from analogy made famous by Rebecca Tuvel and Christine Overall. My claim is that we should not think of racial transitioning as similar to gender transitioning, because different identity groups possess different kinds of obstacles to entry. I then provide historical surveys of American racial categories and the various types of passing common in American history, in order to distinguish the potentially fraudulent from the relatively innocent styles of passing.

    W artykule podjęto próbę odtworzenia procesu stawania się człowiekiem dorosłym w wymiarze tożsamościowym i interakcyjnym na podstawie oryginalnych badań jakościowych. Na podstawie pogłębionych wywiadów swobodnych quasi-biograficznych oraz zogniskowanych wywiadów grupowych przeprowadzonych z młodymi urodzonymi w 1986 roku i wchodzącymi w dorosłość w środowisku wielkomiejskim osobami. Analizę ścieżek kształtowania się tożsamości człowieka dorosłego osadzono w teorii płynnej nowoczesności, teorii wczesnej dorosłości, a także w teorii tożsamości, a następnie, wykorzystując instrumentarium pojęciowe tychże nurtów teoretycznych, scharakteryzowano etapy formowania się tożsamości osoby dorosłej.
    The article attempts to reconstruct the process of becoming an adult person in the dimensions of both identity and social interactions. The article is based on the author’s qualitative research, namely in-depth quasi biographical interviews and focus group interviews conducted with people who were born in 1986 and entering adulthood in the environment of a large city. The analysis of the paths of shaping the adult identity has been embedded in the theory of liquid modernity, theories of early adulthood, and theories of identity. Then, with the use of the conceptual instruments of these theoretical frameworks, the stages of shaping the adult identity have been characterized.

    Massive student protests in South Africa in the past few years, largest since the times of the anti-apartheid struggles, raised several questions for political scientists. Are we witnessing a generational change? Or are they a sign of a broader global shift towards “assertive citizenship” present in advanced democracies and democratizing countries? To answer these questions, this paper examines the levels of political support and nature of political participation among the young generation. The paper also points out that generational change is not immediately visible in public opinion polls but is a process of a gradual narrative construction. Protests brought with them a challenge to the founding narrative of a united Rainbow Nation and reconciliation with the past, leading to a fracture in democratic stability. For the democratic project to succeed, it is essential that the national project in South Africa does not fall apart.

    City identity can be defined as a historically distinctive attributes that distinguish that city form all the other cities. Identity is influenced by many factors such as: genesis of a city, economic development, spatial arrangements and the picture of a city in the collective mind of its inhabitants. City identity is not permanent feature. It is influenced by political, social and economic changes.     This paper presents the results of empirical research that explores the links between types of social participation and identity. The author availed herself of the neo-eriksonian approach to identity by Luyckx et al. (2006) and the concept of social participation types (Reinders, Butz, 2001). The study involved 1,665 students from six types of schools: lower secondary school (n=505), general upper secondary school (n=171), technical upper secondary school (n=187), specialized upper secondary school (n=214), university (n=252), and post-secondary school (medical rescue, massage therapy, cosmetology, occupational therapy) (n=336). The results of the research, conducted with the use of Dimensions of Identity Development Scale (DIDS) and Social Participation Questionnaire (SPQ-S 1 and SPQ-S 2), indicate that transitive orientation increases with age and that, consequently, the frequency of assimilation and integration types of social participation tends to be higher in emerging adulthood in comparison with adolescence. The study showed that general upper secondary school students, contrary to their colleagues from technical and specialized upper secondary schools, did not differ in terms of transitive and moratorium orientation levels from lower secondary school students. The hypothesis about the relationship between transitive orientation and commitment scales was confirmed, whereas the hypotheses concerning the links between exploration scales and both dimensions of social participation were not validated.

    Stawanie się emerytem jest procesem wielowymiarowym i różnorodnym, którego sens doświadczenia konstruuje tożsamość oraz wpływa na jakość życia ludzi po zakończeniu najdłuższej fazy ich życia – pracy zawodowej. Cel badania to opisanie, czym było dla jednostki przejście na emeryturę w okresie PRL. Materiał empiryczny stanowiło dwanaście pamiętników konkursowych, które są subiektywnym, emocjonalnym i obszernym opisem przeżytego doświadczenia stawania się emerytem w społecznym kontekście rzeczywistości PRL-u. Materiał został poddany kodowaniu, analizie i interpretacji w celu wyłonienia wzorów procesu. Zbiory wspólnych przeżyć zostały zestawione z wynikami badań przeprowadzonych przez Brunona Synaka na próbie 284 młodych emerytów, którzy przeszli na emeryturę średnio sześć lat później niż autorzy pamiętników. Badanie pokazuje wiele znaczeń, subiektywnych osądów, modeli zmiany tożsamości z pracownika w emeryta, które osadzone są w kulturze realizmu socjalistycznego.
    Becoming a retiree is a multidimensional and diverse process, the experience of which constructs identity as well as impacts people’s quality of life after ending the longest phase of their life, namely professional work. The aim of the study is to describe what the retirement meant for individuals during the communist period. The empirical material was based on 12 contest memoirs constituting an emotional, subjective, and extensive descriptions of the lived experience of becoming a retiree in the social context of the reality of the Polish People’s Republic. The material was coded, analyzed, and interpreted in order for the process patterns to be reconstructed. The emerging collections of common experiences were juxtaposed with the results of Bruno Synak’s research based on a sample of 284 young retirees who retired on average six years later than the authors of the said diaries. The study shows a wide range of meanings, subjective opinions, and the models identity changes from an employee to a retired person, all of which are embedded in the culture of social realism.
