There is now a wealth of research that explores the relationship between identity and foreign language teaching. This paper, by analysing stories delivered by teachers of varied professional experience, is intended to show that teacher identity can be viewed not just in relation to the cognitive dimension of the self, but rather with respect to the professional discourses prevailing in a particular historical period. Conceiving identity in this way requires a focus on the professional aspects of teaching theories and practices, along with issues of individual identity development situated in socio-political contexts and identifications with communities of practice. The paper centers on the contextually embedded factors that are liable to change with the social, cultural and historical discourses of practice.

The present article describes the results of research on online identity construction during the participation in the hospitality social networks. Specifi cally the user references are analy-sed to understand patterns that form the image of a member. CouchSurfi ng service (couch-surfi ng.org) allows users to leave short texts where the experience of hosting/being hosted by a CS member is described, is an evaluation of the CS members of each other’s personal traits, skills and common experience. Therefore references can become a good instrument for portraying a CouchSurfi ng member and understanding his or her particular traits. Refe-rences form an important part of a user’s virtual identity in the network. Using a sample of references of Spanish CouchSurfi ng users, the research established main characteristics of the references, which are the openness, readiness to share ideas and experiences and trustworthi-ness. These concepts illustrate the typical traits associated with a user of the network and also shed light on the activities common during offl ine CS meetings

Without access to physical cues normally present in face-to-face interaction or extralinguistic information, like ethnographic background or physical attributes, multiple salient online identities, (collectively labelled as a personal identity cluster), can be crafted by exploiting the tools available within the online medium. By examining the language choices of a single participant to an online discussion board, it is shown how identity can be created through interaction, utilizing principles of emergence, indexicality (labels, stances), relationality (positive and negative), and positionality (temporary roles) and partialness. Identity, as described through the standpoint of sociocultural linguistics, is thereby a performance created for and modified through interaction with others. Examples from a case study are shown to validate and enrich this theoretical position.
W komunikacji za pośrednictwem internetu uczestnicy muszą obejść się bez informacji pozajęzykowych, które są normalnie dostępne w komunikacji bezpośredniej, takich jak pochodzenie czy wygląd. Dlatego w kontekście komunikacji online możliwe jest tworzenie różnorakich tożsamości (zwanych zbiorczo zlepkami tożsamości osobowych) przy wykorzystaniu jedynie środków dostępnych w tym medium. Analizując wybory językowe jednego uczestnika forum dyskusyjnego, autorka pokazuje jak można skonstruować tożsamość poprzez interakcję. W swoich badaniach autorka używa pięciu reguł tworzenia takich tożsamości zaproponowanych przez Bucholtz i Hall w 2005: zasady pojawiania się, indeksowania (etykiet, podejścia), zależności (pozytywnej i negatywnej), reguły pozycyjności (tymczasowych ról) oraz zasady złożoności. Tożsamość, opisana z punktu widzenia lingwistyki socjo-kulturowej, jest więc definiowana jako produkt, który jest wynikiem komunikowania się z innymi. Przykłady zaczerpnięte z badań autorki nad internetowym forum dyskusyjnym potwierdzają tę teorię i oferują możliwości jej dalszego rozwinięcia.
In der Online-Kommunikation, anders als es in der direkten Kommunikation der Fall ist, haben die Kommunikationspartner keine Informationen über ihre Herkunft oder das Aussehen. Aus diesem Grund entsteht die Notwendigkeit, in der Online-Kommunikation die Identität (auch Konglomerat von Identitäten genannt) mittels sprachlicher Mittel, die in der online Kommunikation zugänglich sind, auf unterschiedliche Art und Weise herzustellen. Die Autorin zeigt, wie man durch eine Online-Interaktion die Identität konstruieren kann, indem die Sprache eines Teilnehmers von Online-Diskussionsforum analysiert wird. Dabei bezieht sich die Autorin auf fünf Regeln der Identitätskonstruierung, die von Bucholtz und Hall (2005) entwickelt wurden, z. B. das Prinzip der Emergenz, der Indexikalität, der Relationalität, der Positionalität und der Komplexität. Aus der Perspektive der sozio-kulturellen Linguistik ist die Identität ein Produkt, das erst in der Interaktion entsteht. Die angeführten Beispiele bestätigen die Theorie und bieten die Möglichkeit ihrer weiteren Entwicklung.

The question: who am I? – is one of the most frequently formulated questions of an existential nature. In the period of rapid social change it becomes more and more insistent. In recent decades, changes occurring in various areas of life have assumed a truly revolutionary character. A change that seems particularly prominent is globalisation. Rapid social changes force one to form the individual self. This is not an easy task, therefore many people experience identity dilemmas. These are deepened by diverse, often inconsistent or even contradictory, standards and expectations of institutions and social groups in the functioning of which they participate. The liberation of individualism characterising modern and post-modern times increases a sense of subjectivity of individuals, yet at the same time it subjects them to states of uncertainty and crisis. Anthony Giddens claims that they are expressed by the opposing dimensions of contemporary reality such as: unification vs. fragmentation, powerlessness vs. appropriation, authority vs. uncertainty, personalised vs. commodified experience. Therefore, the construction of identity becomes an important task to be undertaken by an individual and one that requires pedagogical support.
Pytanie „kim jestem?” należy do najczęściej formułowanych pytań o charakterze egzystencjalnym. Nasuwa się coraz bardziej natarczywie w okresie gwałtownej zmiany społecznej. W ostatnich dziesięcioleciach zmiany w różnych dziedzinach życia przybrały wręcz charakter rewolucyjny. Do szczególnie widocznych należy globalizacja. Gwałtowna zmiana społeczna zmusza człowieka do ciągłego kształtowania własnego „ja”. Nie jest to zadanie łatwe, toteż wiele osób odczuwa dylematy tożsamościowe. Pogłębiają je różne, często niespójne, a nawet przeciwstawne standardy i oczekiwania instytucji i grup społecznych, w których funkcjonowaniu uczestniczą. Charakterystyczne dla nowoczesności i czasów ponowoczesnych wyzwolenie indywidualizmu zwiększa poczucie podmiotowości jednostek, a jednocześnie naraża je na stany niepewności i kryzysów. Anthony Giddens sądzi, że są one wyrażane przez takie opozycyjne wymiary współczesnej rzeczywistości, jak: unifikacja vs fragmentaryzacja, bezsilność vs kontrola, autorytet vs niepewność, doświadczenie osobiste vs doświadczenie urynkowione. Dlatego konstruowanie tożsamości staje się ważnym zadaniem jednostki i wymaga pedagogicznego wspomagania.

The mother-daughter relationship has received increasing attention over the last few decades, both at the conceptual level and in empirical research. Unfortunately, however, this domain has not yet been sufficiently explored in the Polish context. Equally infrequent are empirical projects which strive to combine analysis of individual experiences with the examination of public discourse and social change within particular historical and cultural contexts. The present text analyzes the process of defining motherhood and daughterhood in Poland, focusing specifically on the trans-generational aspect of female identity construction. It is based on qualitative research carried out in the Warsaw area in 2005–2008. Arguably, such an analysis should help us to map the complicated intersections of gender, generation and positionality in times of social change and contribute to the development of a new perspective on the process of identity construction.

Multiple, interrelated narrative methods were employed in a doctoral study purposed to investigate the student identity development of seven first-year participants. This approach provided them with multiple opportunities to convey their unique first-year experiences and revealed rich understandings of how they constructed their identities at a private higher education provider in Johannesburg, South Africa. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that fostering the trust of participants ensured the formation of rich biographical narrative portraits through multiple narrative-type collection methods and forms of analyses, resulting in rich tapestries of personal experience, which were constitutive of their identity formation. Each participant’s narratives revealed their particularities, complexities, and unique experiences of their first year. Although each participant experienced their first year of study very differently, this article weaves in the first-year experiences of one person into its fabric. The narrations of Kondwani (pseudonym), a Zambian student, are used to illustrate how her voice emerged and was held in a trustful research relationship. Her case is representative of all the participants in that it is an exemplar to illustrate the richness of the individual narratives gleaned from carefully chosen methods and forms of analysis that were employed in the study.

Reunified in 1861, Italy appeared on the international scene almost ready to rush into the scramble for the last outposts of the world not yet explored or conquered by other nations. Along the path that constructed her colonial discourse, considered as the totality of practices and representations supporting the birth and affirmation of Italian colonialism, particularly interesting are some diaries and travel notes written by Navy mariners, busy in oceanic campaigns and circumnavigations in the twenty years preceding the first African settlement. Indeed, these texts show us the dialectical intercourse between the marvel of new encounters and its domestication through the memory of personal and socio−cultural experiences, and, in particular, how the Italian mental attitude on men and lands of the time was influenced by an introspective and affective projection bound to preexisting visions of territory and agriculture. Moreover, the comparison of specific senses of places with the yet to be defined space and the men who inhabit it partakes to the process of selection and emphasis of the Italian national traits, delineating a sense of place of the entire Italian Nation.

The main assumption is that stories we tell children create a specific cultural map of narration, thanks to which children create the feeling of identity, which is both individual and social. Through an interpretive lens that borrows from feminist postmodernist perspectives on identity and cognitive sociology, the manuscript utilizes in-depth interview data from 33 women active in the American second-wave feminist movement to explore how aging feminist activists construct their current political identities in relation to the meanings they give to the perceived progressive political identities and actions of their elders. In particular, this study examines the discursive strategies that respondents engage as they link their own feminist consciousness directly or indirectly to feminist, or otherwise progressive, parents and grandparents. Findings reveal three distinct political legacy narratives, namely 1) explicit transmission origin stories; 2) bridge narratives; and 3) paradox plots that add to both the social movement literature on the symbolic dimensions of recruitment, sustainability, and spillover, as well as cognitive sociological literature on the cultural transmission of political capital, in general, and to our understanding of American second-wave activists, more specifically.

The scarcity of women holding top leadership positions in organisations not only reflects the gender equity issue, which is faced globally including Malaysia, but also indicates it as a phenomenon for the women leaders who managed to climb to the top as head of business organisations. This paper attempts to identify the ‘seeds of leadership’ that contributed towards women’s success as head of business organisations. The lived leadership journeys of seven Malaysian women from the technology, private university, manufacturing, hospitality, and legal industry were examined. A hermeneutical phenomenological approach was used, and a purposive sampling technique was carried out. In-depth interviews were utilised, and data were analysed using the Atlas.ti qualitative data analysis software. The leadership identity construction theory (LICT) was employed in this study. Early personal developmental relationships and experiences contribute as antecedents to the leadership identity construction (LIC) of the senior women leaders. These formative relationships and experiences are concluded as being the ‘seeds of leadership’ that contributed to the development of the women’s future LIC. While this study may not be generalised for profiling other women leaders in Malaysia, its novelty lies in the unique insights.
Niedobór kobiet zajmujących najwyższe stanowiska kierownicze w organizacjach nie tylko odzwierciedla problem równości płci, z którym boryka się na całym świecie, w tym Malezja, ale także wskazuje, że jest to zjawisko dla kobiet liderów, którym udało się wspiąć na szczyt jako szefowa organizacji biznesowych. W artykule podjęto próbę zidentyfikowania „zalążków przywództwa”, które przyczyniły się do sukcesu kobiet jako szefów organizacji biznesowych. Przeanalizowano życiowe podróże przywódcze siedmiu malezyjskich kobiet z branży technologicznej, prywatnego uniwersytetu, produkcji, hotelarstwa i branży prawniczej. Zastosowano hermeneutyczne podejście fenomenologiczne i zastosowano celową technikę próbkowania. Wykorzystano pogłębione wywiady, a dane przeanalizowano za pomocą oprogramowania do jakościowej analizy danych Atlas.ti. W badaniu wykorzystano teorię konstrukcji tożsamości przywódców (LICT). Wczesne relacje i doświadczenia związane z rozwojem osobistym przyczyniają się do tworzenia tożsamości przywódczej (LIC) starszych kobiet liderów. Te formujące relacje i doświadczenia są uważane za „zalążki przywództwa”, które przyczyniły się do rozwoju przyszłej LIC kobiet. Chociaż badanie to może nie być uogólnione w celu profilowania innych liderek w Malezji, jego nowość polega na unikalnych spostrzeżeniach.

Propozycje społeczno-edukacyjne dla młodych ludzi odgrywają ważną rolę w tworzeniu narzędzi umożliwiających satysfakcjonujące włączanie się do życia społecznego. W szczególności Orkiestry Młodzieżowe i Dziecięce, dzięki swojej działalności dostarczającej wsparcia, pozwalają uczestnikom na odkrywanie posiadanych umiejętności, próbowanie ról, rozwijanie wielu rodzajów wiedzy. W Argentynie te projekty Orkiestr są realizowane na terenie całego kraju, a większość z nich jest finansowana ze środków publicznych. Niniejszy artykuł prezentuje wyniki badań prowadzonych pt. „Młodzież w Orkiestrach: budowa tożsamości i przyszłe projekty”. Stanowiły one część badań szerszych Grupy Badania i Interwencje w Psychologii Doradczej (GIIPO) na Wydziale Psychologii Uniwersytetu w Buenos Aires i miały na celu zrozumienie niektórych procesów związanych z konstruowaniem tożsamości poprzez udział w realizacji projektu Orkiestry. Ich wyniki oparte są na narracjach 19 uczestników oraz ich nauczycieli i rodzin. Końcowe refleksje zorientowane są na wypracowanie wiedzy tworzonej z myślą o budowaniu zrównoważonego życia w społeczeństwach XXI wieku.
Socio-educational proposals for young people play an important role in the creation of tools for the improvement of opportunities and for the achievement of satisfactory social insertions. Particularly the Youth and Children’s Orchestras allow their participants to explore their skills, rehearse roles, build models and supports, among multiple knowledge that can be developed from their activities. In Argentina, the Orchestras projects are spread throughout the country and most of them are funded by public policies. This article presents the research “Youth in Orchestras: Construction of Identity and Future Projects”. It was held within the  framework of Grupo de Investigaciones e Intervenciones en Psicología de la Orientación (GIIPO) of the Faculty of Psychology of the University of Buenos Aires. The focus of the research is based on raising questions such as: Which are the meanings young participants give to the Orchestra? What kind of knowledge do they build? What future prospects do they construct? Also, the research aimed to understand some processes related to identity construction within the Orchestra project. The results are based on the narratives of 19 participants and those of their teachers and families. The final reflections will allow us to understand Children and Youth Orchestras as Guiding Institutions, with a general proposal that achieves the elaboration of key knowledge for the construction of sustainable lives in 21st century societies.

Individuals and groups can experience different forms of social exclusion across multiple domains of social life. Owing to its multivariate nature, a generalized approach to studying exclusion has been adopted in empirical work within the field of social psychology. As such, the relational needs thwarted by various forms of exclusion tend to be accounted for by the generalized construct, the need to belong. To increase the specification of these aspects in exclusion research, the interdisciplinary approach of critical discourse analysis and related analytic tools, such as the discursive construction of identity, are used to perform a contextual and systemic analyses of the relational needs implicated in conditions of everyday exclusion. In the discourse of a sample population in Beirut, Lebanon, we aimed to show how distinct relational needs such as acceptance and fitting in can be disentangled from one another, and from the term belonging, as a higher-order concept, disambiguated in natural language. Semi- structured interviews conducted using the language of belonging methodology involved images of socio-political importance as triggers for talk that generated rich data for critical discourse analysis. This resulted in a contextual analysis of sectarianism as exclusionary and a thematic analysis of other experiences of exclusion linked to gentrification, geopolitical division and globalization. Our findings suggest that, as hypothesised, individuals employ distinct terminology when alluding to different experiences of exclusion. This illustrates the benefits of interdisciplinary methods in accounting for social phenomena more fully, and highlights the need for increased specification of generalized constructs in future empirical work on social exclusion in social psychology.

Opis:
The main purpose of the text is to analyze the problem of sexuality presented in the poem by Samuel Twardowskiof entitled “Nadobna Paskwalina” (“The beautiful Paskwalina”). The analysis was based on previous research: the mimetic concept of René Girard and an attempt at feminist reading of romance. The author shows the process of constructing a woman’s personality on the foundations of admiration on the part of the male sex and confronts it with the traditional model of a woman which dominated in the old ages. The next part of the text presents the relationship between the process of building and collapse of the Paskwalina’s identity according to the concept of René Girard. The heroine’s journey and the significance of the influence of her guides are being analyzed. The poem is interpreted as an extensive commentary by Samuel Twardowski on the observed realities of everyday life of the Catholics, and the finale of this romance as a girardian murder of the heroine’s sexuality, which acquires a transgressive character.

Opis:
The subject of the article concerns the issue of constructing and reconstructing national identity. The object of interest here is a sociological case study of Serbian national identity. It includes reconstruction and interpretation of in-depth interviews conducted in Serbia with the representatives of Serbian symbolic elites. The concept of symbolic elites is approached in the discussed research from Teun van Dijk’s perspective. Thus, they are individuals and groups directly involved in the production of public opinion, who have an impact on the content of publicly available knowledge, and the creation and legitimization of public discourse. The work is embedded in the methodological framework of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and is based on the assumptions of the Discourse‐Historical Approach (DHA). In this optics, the most important thing is the historical and social context of the studied process of the discursive construction of national identity. Therefore, the conclusions also touch upon the historical, political, and social perspective of the formation of Serbian national identity. The reflection also aims at presenting the analysis from the contemporary perspective (mainly in 2008-2020). Thus, paying attention to the political divisions in Serbia and the country’s road to democratization and European integration, the discussed research study shows the comprehensive specifics of the studied national identity.

Opis:
A complex biography of Ivo Andrić (1892–1975) was shaped in a wide net of identity references: ethnocultural, religious, political, and linguistic. He was born to a Croatian Catholic family in Bosnia, he was a convinced supporter of Yugoslavism and a writer of the language defined as Croato-Serbian / Serbo-Croatian diasystem. In the period of his links with the cultural environment of Zagreb (1912–1919), he was writing according to the Croatian standard, later basically, in Serbian, but using environmental and stylistic diversity of the diasystem in order to stress its cognitive and artistic potential. Currently, when four national language standards are developing on the basis of the diasystem: Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian and Montenegrin, reading Andrić in accordance with post-Yugoslav linguistic ideas, that is with the awareness and conviction about the „break-up” of the Serbo-Croatian language, would necessarily lead to an absurd conclusion that the writer created his works using the content of various languages. Literary heritage of the great writer of Serbo-Croatian language, which remains a sociocultural fact, has been used not only by Serbian culture and language, but also by global culture – thanks to translations of the works of this Nobel laureate into numerous world languages.
