Opis:
The last Weichselian glacial advance into the western Baltic depression, the so-called "Young Baltic" glacier advance is described. In the southern Baltic depression, ice masses flowed westwards and fanned out in the western Baltic region where they terminated along the end moraines of the East Jutland advance (Denmark), Sehberg advance (Schleswig-Holstein) and Mecklenburg advance (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern). The westward ice advance is likely due to the rapid melting of Norwegian and Swedish ice masses which had previously blocked the more easterly ice masses from draining to the west and north-west. The deposition of a purely eastern-sourced debris facies by a Baltic ice stream in the far west might be the result of ice/bed separation during flow.

Opis:
The variability ofice movement directions within the Vistula lobe of the Main Stadial ice sheet of the last glaciation is analysed. Reconstruction of the ice movement directions is made based on analysis of the orientation of glacial morpholineaments. Linear glacial land forms are analysed on the basis of data from 26 map sheets of the Detailed Geo logical Map of Poland (DGMP), scale 1:50 000, compiled earlier by various au thors. The morpholineaments were investigated in a belt of morainic plateau that adjoins the Vistula valley on both sides. The analysis revealed that the last glaciation ice sheet advanced directly from the north within the broadly un der stood Vistula ice lobe zone, and that the ice flow direction was constant. However, within a narrow belt of the pre-Vistula River valley that was formed in the Eemian Interglacial, the 30–50 km wide ice stream was characterized by locally variable ice flow directions consistent with the pre-existing valley trend. Changes in ice flow direction are recorded in the locally variable orientation of lin ear glacial landforms, indicating that the ice stream was active until the deglaciation period when the pres ent-day shapes of the glacial landforms developed.

Opis:
In the Polish Lowlands, three main ice lobes, referred to as Odra, Vistula and Mazury, formed during the Last Scandinavian Glaciation. These lobes protruded at least several kilometres beyond the main ice margin and it is believed that they represent terminal parts of the ice streams. Applied geostatistical analysis based on numerous geological data has allowed an approximate reconstruction of the Odra ice lobe substratum in the area of northwest Poland and northeast Germany. A spatial representation of the Odra lobe substratum clearly illustrates the adverse slope of the glacier bed, but also indicates areas morphologically prone to ice streaming. It is suggested that the ice took advantage of local topography that enabled advance out of the Baltic basin; consequently, the ice followed a topographic low which, in combination with favourable hydraulic conditions of its substratum, likely initiated ice streaming.

Opis:
Based on various cartographic sources, a digital terrain model and acoustic profiling data, linear relief features of glacial origin have been distin guished and analysed in the Gulf of Riga and adjacent mainland areas in order to reconstruct the dynamics and pathways of former ice streams. North-east–south-west oriented features in the till topography prevail in the central part of the gulf and along the southern coast of the island of Saaremaa, which corroborate the previously known south/south-east di rection of the main Riga ice stream. North-east to south-west directed features dominate in the Pärnu Bay and around the Irbe Strait. Similar deviations from the Riga ice stream are most likely due to ice divide zones, namely the Sakala Upland in Southern Estonia and Kurzeme in north western Latvia, which locally changed the course of the main ice flow. The influence of the Kurzeme ice divide is traceable at the bottom of the gulf up to the southern coast of Saaremaa. There is no evidence of an ice-marginal zone cross ing the central part of the Gulf of Riga as was supposed earlier. The Pandivere-Neva and Palivere ice-marginal zones, which merge on the Sorve Peninsula, probably continue offshore into the Irbe Strait. As the age of the glacier relieffeatures is poorly contained, the chronologi reconstruction of the ice dynamics is tentative.

Opis:
Volcanism in eastern Iceland has controlled the changes in glacier- and river-drainage patterns and the sedimentary budget, particularly during the Middle and Late Pleistocene. The glacial extent in NE Iceland appears to be related to the impact of volcanic activity, not only on the ice-stream dynamics, but also on the sedimentary successions. Analysis of the Jökuldalur and Jökulsa á Brù records results in a new interpretation of the changes in ice extent and flow direction for at least the last two glaciations. From MIS 8 onward, the development of the Snæfell volcano apparently forced the ice stream that derived from the Vatnajökull ice cap to take another course; it also affected the offshore sedimentary budgets at the new outlet at Vopnafjördur. The MIS 6 ice sheet was thick and extensive, and associated with an ice-stream diversion to the North. The thick sedimentary complex of palaeolake Halslón was formed close to an outlet of the Vatnajökull, the Brùarjökull, during Termination II and a part of the MIS 5e interglacial. The deposits formed during MIS 5e record two climate optima interrupted by two successive glacial advances correlated with the mid-Eemian cooling. The deposits of the Weichselian deglaciation (Termination I) are much more limited in thickness. During the Last Glacial Maximum and the Late Glacial, glaciers also seem to have been restricted in the Jökulsa á Brù area. Valley glaciers issued from the Brùarjökull re-advanced several times in the Jökuldalur only during at least the Older Dryas, the Younger Dryas and the Preboreal. NE Iceland has undergone considerable deglaciation since the Bølling. In contrast to the conclusions of previous studies, the results presented here are consistent with data on the glaciations in other Nordic regions and can increase the understanding of the mid-Eemian cooling.

Opis:
The question of glaciation of the Cracow-Częstochowa Upland (also known as Polish Jura) during the South Polish Glaciations (Elsterian) is one of the most controversial issues in the Polish Pleistocene palaeogeography. According to S. Z. Różycki (1960), in these times this region became a "concave nunatak" whereas an area from Olsztyn in the north to Krzeszowice in the south was the "Glacial Oasis of Polish Jura". This hypothesis, derived from Różycki's field studies in Antarctica (the Bunger Oasis), is still discussed in the Polish literature. The problem is still regarded as open despite of extensive geological mapping of that area. However, in author's opinion, the presence of Pleistocene glacial oasis appears confirmed by both regional geological studies and the recent glaciological theories.

Opis:
During the maximum of the last glaciation the Vistula ice lobe was one of the key morphological elements at southern margin of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet in north-central Poland. The area of the Vistula ice lobe experienced two ice sheet advances of varied extent, the earlier one during the Leszno Phase and the younger one in the Poznań Phase. According to the authors, the limit of the Leszno Phase within the study area was much smaller than hitherto accepted and its age is estimated at about 20.5 ka BP. Significant ice sheet retreat was followed by an ice readvance during the Poznań Phase, overriding the extent of the Leszno Phase. The Poznań readvance reached the maximum limit in the Vistula ice lobe area about 18.5 ka BP. It is assumed that the rapid ice sheet transgression during the Poznań Phase (on average 400 m/a) and origin of the Vistula lobe were probably connected with activity of the palaeo-ice stream.
