Opis:
This article begins with a brief characterization of the writer’s notebook as a special text type. Then the article analyzes structural and compositional features that notebooks of the 19th and 20th centuries have in common with postmodernist prose. These features include: a) fragmentary narration; chaotic composition; many syntactic and semantic ellipses; b) the absence of one main idea and an important role of chance in the creative process; c) an opportunity to start reading a text from any of its parts, even from the end; d) a great number of intertextual links; similarity to hypertext; e) no stylistic and thematic limitations, etc. There are three possible explanations of these points of convergence: a psychological one, a linguistic one and a historical-literary one.

The article reflects the experience of using the original software system “Hypertext Search for Companion-Words in Author’s Texts”, which allows one to find recurrent lexical combinations in the work of an author (the “corpus” direction of research) or in a thematically (by key lexical items) defined corpus of poems by various authors, right up to all Russian poetry (a “thematic” line of research). In the identified lexical combinations, a common lexical set is distinguished, due to the commonality of actual life or of language material, to common features of human perception, or to widespread associations. In this way a leitmotiv-based lexical environment emerges. It contains the dominant components of lexical combinations. Outside the leitmotiv set remain variations – lexemes that are occasionally added to the leitmotiv core in specific texts and thereby individualize those texts. These are optional components of combinations. Identifying the dominant and the optional components of lexical combinations is effective for comparing different authors and for establishing what they have in common and where they differ in their poetic interpretations of the same topic.

In particular, the electronic hypertext reveals features that have never before existed in language, making the classification and regulation of these features at th s stage o f language leaming impossible, as the traditional definition o f standards is based on a linear languagelevel, and hypertext, a complicated non-hnear formation, with the signs o f other semiotic systems, in other languages, etc.

The aim of the paper is to present the results of analysis of the biblical quotations and borrowings found in the Palaea Historica (9th century) in its second Slavic translation, according mostly to the classification of biblical quotations given by M. Garzaniti (2014). Having its narrative material based on the Octateuch as well as the Books of Samuel, Books of Kings and Books of Chronicles, the Palaea contains a variety of adaptations of the biblical text, which provide evidence for the creative usage of the hypertext (through inter al. summary, contamination of episodes, expansion of details, dramaturgization). Literal quotations from the Old and New Testaments also form an important group of such borrowings. Curiously, a part of these play no narrative role, but rather a structural one, as they summarize the meanings of particular chapters (stories).

On the one hand, the reviewer appreciates the author’s attempt at a comprehensive presentation of all aspects of hypertext fiction (structure of lexis, hyperlink features, connection models, differences in structure) and its relations with avant-garde literary tradition, theory of literature and text studies, on the other hand she provides some critical remarks concerning numerous mistakes, omissions and inconsistencies. Pisarski’s book presents a wealth of topics and references, provides a summary of existing research positions, but is too cautious in marking out new paths.

The article discusses image development in “Parallax” (an internet magazine devoted to computer games), with a special focus on aspects of visual identification. The article presents the characteristics of “Parallax”, the stages of building its image, and the building of the brand, with special attention paid to issues such as the design of name, logo, typography, and the selection of the appropriate color. The aim of the study is to demonstrate how conscious image building affects perceptions of the e-zine. Thanks to developments in interactivity, the mass media communication model is changing. The engagement of the sender and receiver provides clues for the proper functioning of this new-born journalism type, which is a key contributor that is rapidly gaining importance in relation to traditional media types. The author reveals plans to increase the contribution of graphic, visual aspects in internet media models when comparing them to “paper” media, which often seems to be underestimated by publishers and explains its importance for identity creation in internet media.

Opis:
In recent years there has been a growing interest to incorporate hypertext glosses into L2 reading materials and accordingly, it has provoked researchers to uncover to what extent and under which moderator variables a specific type of gloss yields more effective outcomes than other types of glossing. The present meta-analysis attempts to examine the magnitude of the effect of different gloss types (single vs. multiple glosses) on L2 vocabulary acquisition along with identification of the contextual factors that influence between-study variation through synthetizing 34 primary articles which satisfy the inclusion criteria. The overall effect size is found to be + 0.83 (p<0.05), indicating that multiple glosses (text+visual) has a large, positive effect on learners’ vocabulary acquisition than single mode of glossing (text-only). Moderator analyses further suggest that intensity of the program and L2 proficiency level are potential moderators influencing the heterogeneity between effect sizes, whereas the learning context, sample size and research design do not have such impact.

Opis:
The discussion initiated in the 1960s by McLuhan concerning the interrelationship between what is said (orality) and what is written (literacy) has been replaced by a new approach focusing on the connection between image and text. This shift of attention results, among others, from the increasing role of technical media and computers and the decreasing role of the traditional written culture in the shape of books and print. The contemporary media are becoming something more than just a passive tool for information transmission. The text and the word itself are undergoing technologization, as Walter Ong, has put it, and they are often accompanied by the image. Linguistics cannot ignore these changes, and investigates the evolving materiality of communication, focusing on design, the so-called text performance, visual layer, and the whole emerging from both the image and text. The last two are becoming so strictly connected, especially in internet hypertexts, that the phrase “iconic turn” is often used. Apart from that, there appears text fragmentation, which leads to changes in the process of reception: ordinary reading recedes replaced by holistic reading (based on whole images).

In this text the author reflects on the semiotic existence of culture discourses in connection with the rapid development of digital technology. The author analyzes selected texts of digital art as examples of the transformation in how works of literature, sculpture, or film exist. The article covers how movable font, which changes in shape and color, participates in shaping literary meanings; the creation of semiotic and interactive figures; the textualization of the user’s actions and body; dematerialization; processuality; narrativization; the temporalizing of sculpture, which changes before the eyes of the recipient; the presence of alternative narratives in literature and film; multi-variant plots co-created by the recipient; and the artistic use of other discourses. The author proves that the structure and specificity of the digital sign lies at the base of the changes. The digital sign is immaterial, programmable, and hybrid, and combines aspects of expression, meaning, and action, which makes it efficient.

This study investigated the effect of computer-assisted instruction (CAI) on adult second language (L2) learners’ vocabulary recognition and production across high and low proficiency levels. Seventy-four participants were assigned to experimental (CAI) and control groups. All participants in the CAI group were categorized into high and low proficiency levels, based on their L2 vocabulary knowledge. The treatment lasted for one semester, 16 sessions, during which 16 passages were covered. While the CAI group individually worked on the passages uploaded on the CALL software, enhanced with hypertext annotations, the control group read the same passages through traditional teacher-directed instruction. The comparison of vocabulary recognition and production pretest and post-test scores revealed the significant effect of CAI on L2 learners’ vocabulary uptake in the immediate and delayed post-tests. While no significant differences were found between the high and low proficiency participants in terms of their improvement from production pretest to the post-test, lower-level participants revealed more vocabulary recognition gains. The findings have pedagogical implications for L2 teachers, practitioners, and courseware designers in that they can rely on CALL software as a viable scaffolding tool for L2 vocabulary growth.

The transformation of literary models was born out of a process initiated by the avant-garde and is still present nowadays in the form of the post avant-garde, understood as the creation of many new manifestations of literary expressions, including digital literature. The aim of the article is to analyse the forms, changes and structures of digital literature in comparison to the procedures of so-called “traditional literature”. The methodology is based on comparative literature. The topic is viewed from the perspective of Ibero-American literature exemplified with proto-hypertexts, hypertexts and literary hypermedia from Latin America. As a summary, we can say that digital literature is not going to change literature, but it is going to introduce new literary aesthetics which, in turn, will provide literature with new, different, and experimental narrative structures.
„literatury tradycyjnej”.

The aim of this article is to present a characteristic of a web text, based on looking through varius definitions of text and confront them with hypertext. The author compare traditional and nontraditional approaches to text, based on works of such researchers as: Teresa Dobrzyńska, Jerzy Bartmiński and Stanisława Niebrzegowska-Bartmińska, Anna Duszak, Wojciech Kalaga and Jurij Łotman. A significant referance point to presented deliberations are W. Kalaga's proposals, included in his work Mgławice dyskursu, which emphasize openness of text, its constant "being in motion" (semiotic motion). In the light of nontraditional proposals of approach to the idead of text, it is perceived as dynamic phenomenon and as a process on varius levels (semantic, communicative). This way of perceiving text brings it close to hypertext as and open, unfinished form, which is constntly shaped by a user. An important role when it comes to hypertext is played by links, because they enable an adressee to create a web text. Comparison of different approaches to the idea of text and juxtapose them with characteristic of hypertext makes possible to point out important features of web text.

Opis:
The present article is devoted to a textological analysis of the so-called intertextual proper names, i.e. units that relate to the structure of names that have been constructed earlier. The article attempts to characterize the so-called proprial (onymic) texts with the relations taking place between the hypotext (cf. “source name”) and the hypertext and/or hypertexts (cf. target name) taken into consideration. Considering the way particular texts are derived via a transition of some kind, a number of types has been distinguished: transtextualization, intertextualization, transformation, iconization and imitation. Transtextualisation involves names transferred from one onymic plane to another without any formal change (cf. Polish Pożegnanie z Afryką (Out of Africa) – the title of a film > Pożegnanie z Afryką – the name of a branch of shops in Poland). Transformations are names that have originated as a result of different linguistic transformations of the source text, i.e. the hypotext (cf. Skierniewice – a place name of a town > the Skierniewka – the name of a river). Imitations correspond to names formed in artificial onymic conditions, through analogy to structures already existing in the propial tradition (e.g. Biedaczkowo [Penuryville] – a text in the function of a place name, Bezczelnicki – a joke name to be found in literature). Intextualisations are, in turn, names whose structure contains hypotexts resulting from indirect influence or more or less precise application of their structure (cf. Słoń Torbalski – the name of a fancy leather goods manufacturer from the classic verse by J. Tuwim about its eponymous protagonist, the forgetful elephant, Tomasz Trąbalski). Finally, iconizations are created as a result of a transformation of the structure of pastiche-type hypotext or parody or burlesque (cf. Rozmowy w tłoku < Rozmowy w toku). The article also discusses differences between the so-called classic(archetypal) and prioprial text, as well as the functions of intertextual appellative texts, that involves updating of name-resources of a given system, among others.
