Opis:
In this paper, a numerical modeling of crack propagation for rubber-like materials is presented. This technique aims at simulating the crack growth under mixed-mode loading based on the strain energy density approach. At each crack increment length, the kinking angle is evaluated as a function of the minimum strain energy density (MSED) around the crack tip, using the Ansys Parametric Design Language (APDL). In this work, numerical examples are illustrated to demonstrate the effectiveness, robustness and accuracy of the computational algorithm to predict the crack propagation path. The results obtained show that the plan of crack propagation is perpendicular to the direction of the maximum principal stretch. Moreover, in the framework of linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM), the minimum values of the density are reached at the points corresponding to the crack propagation direction.

Opis:
Artificial materials including various kinds of polymers like polyurethanes are more and more widely used in different branches of science and also in biomedical engineering. The paper presents the process of creating a constitutive equation for a polyurethane nanocomposite which is considered to be hyper-elastic. The constitutive modelling was conducted within the range of application of the material as one of the components of lumbar intervertebral disc prosthesis. In the paper, the biomechanics of the lumbar spine and the most frequently applied intervertebral disc prostheses are described. Also a polyurethane nanocomposite as a new material to be applied in prostheses is presented. The way of formulating a constitutive equation by means of mathematical formulae is described. Four various hyper-elastic potential functions are considered, i.e., Ogden, Neo-Hookean, Yeoh and Mooney–Rivlin. On the basis of monotonic compression tests the best hyper-elastic model for the material considered was chosen and hyper-elastic constants were calibrated. Finally, the constitutive model was validated on the basis of FE analysis. The paper ends with a conclusion and presentation of further plans of research directed towards the development of a constitutive equation and its application in computer simulations by means of the finite element method.

Opis:
A new augmented Biderman model inspired by the modified couple stress theory has been introduced to investigate the size effect in addition to nonlinear material effects. Then, this model is used to investigate free vibration of a hyper-elastic microbeam. Classical Biderman strain energy does not include the effect of small size in hyper-elastic materials. In order to consider the effect of small size, terms inspired by the modified couple stress theory are added to the classical Biderman strain energy function. In order to provide the possibility of calculating these terms, a relation between the material constants in the hyper-elastic Biderman model and the linear elastic constants is obtained. The equations of motion of the microbeam is obtained based on the extended Hamilton principle, and then is solved using Galerkin discretization and perturbation methods. The effect of thickness to length scale ratio on the normalized frequency is studied for different modes. It is shown that when thickness gets larger in comparison with the length scale parameter, the normalized frequency tends to classical Biderman results. The results obtained are validated by results of the Runge-Kutta numerical method and indicate an excellent agreement. Mode shapes of the microbeam based on the classical and the augmented models are depicted, where the augmented model anticipates stiffer behavior for hyperelastic microbeams.
