    Under Hylemorphism, all composed beings are composed of form and matter. Accordingly, the human being is a unified substance of soul and body. Through the operations of a human being an immaterial power is manifested which demonstrates that the rational soul is immaterial and immortal. Through these elements of Thomistic metaphysics, a clear understanding of the person emerges as both in-itself and toward-others. After key metaphysical principles such as the principle of sufficient reason are defended, arguments against the thesis which claim the person is reducible to body or soul are rebuked and the Hylemorphic account is shown to stand. Leaning on the work of W. Norris Clarke, the person as body and soul is thus shown to be the frontier of being.

    Opis:
    The article discuss the anthropological issue of Scheler’s most successful pupil, Hans Eduard Hengstenberg. The German philosopher tried to unite two different philosophical traditions: phenomenology and classical metaphysics. His main achievement was foundation of the new anthropological position based on the phenomenological concept of Sachlichkeit and the ontology of constitution. The article explains the inner logic of Hengstenberg’s ontological position and exams his philosophical criticism against the traditional hylemorfic theory of Aristotle used as a scholastic tool for explaining the union between body and mind.
    Artykuł omawia antropologiczną pozycję Hansa Eduarda Hengstenberga. Żyjący w dwudziestym wieku niemiecki filozof próbował połączyć w swojej refleksji fenomenologię z klasyczna metafizyką. Główną zasługą Hengstenberga, będącego w opinii Roberta Spaemanna najwybitniejszym uczniem Maxa Schelera, była udana próba ufundowania propozycji antropologicznej, która wychodząc z fenomenologicznej analizy ludzkich postaw nakreśliła opartą o pojecie konstytucji nową ontologię ludzkiej osoby. Artykuł dyskutuje próbę rozwiązania przez Hengstenberga tradycyjnej aporii antropologii opartej o rozumienie człowieka jako połączenia sfery cielesnej i duchowej. Proponując rozumienie człowieka jako konstytucji ducha, sfery witalnej oraz tzw. zasady osobowościowej Hengstenberg krytykuje arystotelesowską koncepcję możności i aktu jak teorię proponującą kauzalną zasadę połączenia ducha i ciała w jednym ludzkim podmiocie. Koncepcja Hengstenberga wskazuje na realność ludzkiego ciała oraz jego istotne miejsce w konstytuowaniu całości ludzkiego bytu.

    Koniec XVI i początek XVII wieku to czas ożywionych dyskusji filozoficzno-przyrodniczych. Jeden z ich ważnych wątków stanowił spór o naturę materii. Starły się tu trzy dominujące ówcześnie stanowiska filozoficzne: arystotelesowski hylemorfizm, odradzający się atomizm i wywodząca się od Paracelsusa tzw. filozofia chemiczna. Wśród wielu pojawiających się tematów na szczególną uwagę zasługuje zagadnienie tzw. jakości ukrytych. Ich koncepcja okazuje się istotnym wyróżnikiem każdego z tych stanowisk. Jest ona o tyle ważna, że ujawnia stojące za nią w każdym przypadku założenia epistemologiczne. Chodzi tu głównie o relację między inteligibilnością i poznawalnością zmysłową przedmiotów materialnych, a także, związane z tym, możliwości poznawcze umysłu ludzkiego. Przyjęte rozwiązania decydują też o tym, jak rozumie się samo pojęcie „jakości”. Dla arystotelików jest to cecha realnie tkwiąca w przedmiocie, filozofowie nowożytni rozumieją ją jako relację zachodzącą między przedmiotem i podmiotem, paracelsjanie wreszcie cechy przedmiotów materialnych interpretują na sposób duchowy.
    The end of 16th and the beginning of 17th centuries witnessed some very heated discussions on the philosophy of nature. One of the important issues was the nature of matter. There clashed there the tree dominating philosophical positions – the Aristotelian hylemorphism, the emerging modern atomism and, deriving from Paracelsus the chemical philosophy. Of many of the discussed topics a special attention deserves the issue of “occult qualities.” The accepted concept of them turns out to be a distinguishing feature of these philosophical positions. The concept of “occult qualities” is an important one because it shows some epistemological presuppositions that are taken by each of the sides. It is mainly about the relation between intelligibility and possibility of sensual perception of material objects, and the cognitive abilities of human mind. The accepted views are decisive as to how the very concept of “quality” is understood. For the Aristotelians it is a feature that really adheres to the object, the modern philosophers understand it as a relation between the subject and the object, the Paracelsians, finally, interpret the features of material object in a spiritual way.

    The aim of this paper is to present and discuss the content of two parts of two different quaestiones quodlibetales of Thomas Aquinas. What they have in common is that they both treat the status of Christ (and in particular: of his body) after his death. Although they concern explicitely only the status of Christ, they can also be referred to the status of every human being post mortem. This article shows how Aquinas applies theses derived from his general metaphysical system to defend few statements that he considers necessary to adopt if one wishes to remain within the borders of christian orthodoxy. These statements are: that the death of Christ was a real one; that his divinity was not separated from him during his death; from this second statement a third one is derived: if this is the case, then the body of Christ during his death was the same one as his body before his death. By the way of some extrapolation, we can see what importance these theses and the way of justifying them bear on the more general question of a posthmous condition of human beings, especially their bodies.
