Opis:
This paper presents the development of runoff hydrographs for selected rivers in the Ogun-Osun river catchment, south west, Nigeria using Snyder and Soil Conservation Service (SCS) methods of synthetic unit hydrograph to determine the ordinates. The Soil Conservation Service (SCS) curve Number method was used to estimate the excess rainfall from storm of different return periods. The peak runoff hydrographs were determined by convoluting the unit hydrographs ordinates with the excess rainfall and the value of peak flows obtained by both Snyder and SCS methods observed to vary from one river watershed to the other. The peak runoff hydrograph flows obtained based on the unit hydrograph ordinate determined with Snyder method for 20-yr, 50-yr, 100-yr, 200-yr and 500-yr, return period varied from 112.63 m3/s and 13364.30 m3/s, while those based on the SCS method varied from 304.43 m3/s and 6466.84 m3/s for the eight watersheds. However, the percentage difference shows that for values of peak flows obtained with Snyder and SCS methods varies from 13.14% to 63.30%. However, SCS method is recommended to estimate the ordinate required for the development of peak runoff hydrograph in the river watersheds because it utilized additional morphometric parameters such as watershed slope and the curve number (CN) which is a function of the properties of the soil and vegetation cover of the watershed.

Opis:
While determining theoretical flood hydrographs, different methods of their construction are used depending on the needs of the problem or the scope of the project. It should be remembered that these methods differ mainly with the principle of the waveform averaging, which may be done either according to the flow or time. The hydrographs may be divided into nonparametric (determining on the basis of registered floods) and parametric (using mathematical description of the flood course). One of the analytical methods is Strupczewski method which has two parameters: responsible for the waveform and specifies the base flow, the flow above which values of hydrograph are calculated. The functional description uses the Pearson type III density distribution. The estimation of parametric flood hydrographs determined by means of Strupczewski method was carried out in the case when a nonparametric flood hydrograph suggested by the author was replaced with a nonparametric flood hydrograph computed using so called Cracow method. There was also made an estimation of flood hydrographs computed for single real hydrographs with the highest registered discharge and for so called typical hydrographs considering the volume. Comparative analyses were carried out for 20 gauging stations in the upper Vistula and in the middle Odra rivers catchments. The analysis revealed that hypothetical hydrographs determined using the Cracow method may be used in Strupczewski method as a nonparametric input hydrograph. Also real hydrographs meeting the criterion of a typical hydrograph due to their volume, may provide a basis for determination of a parametric flood.

Opis:
Parametric flow hydrographs are used for design and management purposes in such fields as water management and aquatic engineering. They describe a theoretical hydrograph based on such parameters as maximum flow, time to peak, and surge duration. They are used to forecast flood risk and to evaluate the impact of land use on the run-off hydrograph. In Western Europe for many years methods have been used in which parametric hydrographs are determined based on physical catchment descriptors (PCDs), which are divided into three groups describing the physical features of a catchment. These descriptors are used to derive formulae enabling the determination of parametric flow hydrographs for any computational crosssection. In this work, such formulae are derived for the catchment of the Raba River, using the principles of design hydrology applied in Western European countries. The parametric hydrograph is described using Baptista’s gamma density function. The input hydrograph was a nonparametric flow hydrograph determined by Archer’s method. For nine gauging stations located in the Raba catchment, physical catchment descriptors were obtained for two 30-year periods: 1961-1990 and 1983-2012. Based on the nonparametric flow hydrograph and the PCDs, two groups of formulae were derived to describe the parametric hydrograph. Analysis of agreement between the computed parametric flow hydrographs and the input hydrograph indicated a high quality of fit. It should be noted that the formulae and analysis presented here refer only to the Raba catchment. However, the results confirm the possibility of applying these methods to the determination of parametric flow hydrographs for any river cross-section.

Opis:
Nonparametric hydrographs, constructed by the method suggested by Archer, are usually used for developing parametric design hydrographs. Flow changes in time are described by the UPO ERR Gamma complex function, which denotes a Gamma curve reformulated to have a Unit Peak at the Origin (abbreviated to UPO), supplemented by the Exponential Replacement Recession (ERR) curve. It may be observed, that this solution does not work in some areas of the upper Vistula and middle Odra catchments when the times of the rising limb of a hydrograph are higher than the times of the falling limb, i.e. when the skewness coefficient approximates 0.5 or higher values. Better results can be achieved with the function suggested by Strupczewski in 1964. It is a solution which uses two parameters of the flood hydrograph. The objective of the present paper is to assess the Strupczewski method by comparing it with a complex UPO ERR Gamma function for gauged cross-sections in the upper Vistula and middle Odra catchments. The assessment was carried out for 30 gauged cross-sections (15 in each river catchment). The parameters were optimized for width-hydrograph descriptors W75 and W50, designed by the Archer method, and for the skewness coefficient s. Optimization using only two width-hydrograph descriptors aims to test how the Strupczewski method works for cross-sections for which the values of width-hydrograph descriptors W75 and W50 are known. The assessment of both methods was carried out with reference to a nonparametric hydrograph constructed by the Archer method. The results of these assessments suggest that the Strupczewski method may be used not only for gauged cross-sections, but also for ungauged ones.

Opis:
Climatic factors are the most important of all the factors that influence the hydrograph shape of a river; this is because they are dynamic in space and time. The presence of hydrographs with a similar shape in long-term observation series of water runoff indicates that from time to time in the catchment of a river the same conditions of water runoff formation repeat. This is due to the cyclicity of climatic and – as a consequence – hydrological processes. The classification of hydrographs based on the similarity of their shapes on the Desna River (observation period 18852010) was carried out using the geometrical similarity criterion (ρ) and the average Euclidean distance between values of hydrograph pairs (η). 41 classes of hydrographs, which included from 1 to 6 hydrographs, were obtained. Among them were determined 12 classes with low probability, 9 classes with medium probability and 20 classes with high probability. An analysis of the conditions of hydrograph formation for each of the identified classes was performed for the following factors: the sums of daily air temperatures and precipitation during the period of positive air temperature (from July) and the period of negative air temperatures, and also during the period of temperature transition through 0ºC up to the peak discharges, index of depth of soil freezing, index of snow water equivalent, index of soil moisture content, and index of snowmelt. In general, hydrographs which are included in one class have similar climatic conditions to those of water runoff formation. However, in some cases, a combination of different values and dynamic factors can lead to the formation of similar hydrograph shapes.

Opis:
In Poland there are several methods used for determination of the design flood hydrographs. Among the others, the method developed by Hydroprojekt is used. According to the authors’ knowledge, this method has not been published yet. The method assumes that the design flood hydrographs are to be determined based on the real registered floods in a given gauged cross-section. The method uses the random number generator from the range of (-0.1, 0.2) independently for time instants of the hydrograph rising and falling limbs. This enables that the hydrographs have different time courses at different peak discharges. The study analyses the results received from this method in comparison to the Cracow method, assuming that the model hydrograph is the rainfall hydrograph, unimodal with the biggest registered discharge. The Cracow Method is chosen as the most objective one because of the calculation procedures which enable to determine the average time course based on 8 biggest flood hydrographs, and this method enables to determine the design flood hydrograph volume during its construction based on the linear correlation. The comparative analyses were conducted for the reduced volume, i.e., flood volume at the discharges bigger than the peak discharge with given exceedance probability, Q50%. The comparison of rising times for the hydrographs determined with both methods was done as well. The comparisons were done for 11 gauged cross-sections located in the area of the Upper Vistula catchment and they included the rivers of different nature: mountainous, sub-mountainous, upland and lowland. The analyses were unsuccessful for the Hydroprojekt method. Similar to other methods where the base for the design flood hydrograph determination is one flood hydrograph, both the flood volume and the rising time in most cases are different from the average conditions determined with the Cracow method. When using a model hydrograph with the highest recorded peak discharge, the Hydroprojekt method does not perform well and rather should not be used.

This article is devoted to the use of a mathematical model of a flood runoff for calculating rainfall runoff hydrographs from small catchments of the northwest coast of the Black Sea. The described model was tested and applied for the following catchments located in various geographical conditions, with various amounts of initial data: experimental catchments in Zacarpathian, the northwest of the Black Sea region – Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, small catchments of the northern part of Vietnam, etc. This work was carried out on the basis of Moldavian Water-Balance Station databases. The development of a complex approach to a mathematical simulation of the formation of the processes of rain floods from small catchments is also given further investigation in this article. A brief description of the structure of a flood runoff spatial model from small catchments then provided. As well as this, the advantages of using radiolocation measurement of rainfall in the mathematical modeling of the formation of a flood runoff are shown. The results of construction runoff hydrographs confirm the possibility of applying this spatial model with the use of radar information. The optimization of model parameters was made with the data of 123 floods. The values of the quality criterion S/σ turned out not to exceed the value 0.8 in 81% of the considered cases of floods.

Opis:
The Archer method for construction of nonparametric hydrographs was regarded as the basic one for constructing design hydrographs in gauged cross sections. The hydrographs designed using this method belong to a group of non-formalized hydrology. Unlike the commonly used formalized methods, where a nonparametric hydrograph is strictly determined and defined, the hydrographs defined in this way are constructed on the assumption, that flow is the main determined parameter. On the other hand, the Archer method assumes that the basic parameter is time, which is determined for assigned standardized flow, called a flow percentile. Hydrographs constructed using this method are the basis for constructing parametric design hydrographs used for engineering computations. The Archer method is relatively new and should be verified for various regions. Presented manuscript compares the results obtained using this method in the middle Odra and upper Vistula basins with the nonparametric method developed at the Cracow University of Technology, called the Cracow method. The obtained results show, that four highest registered flood waves are sufficient to construct a nonparametric design hydrograph, whereas semi-standardized volumes above descriptors W75 and W50 and the duration time of the descriptors are bigger than the volumes and duration times calculated by means of the Cracow method in the Vistula River basin, and approximate with regard to the values in the Odra River basin.

Celem artykułu była ocena wpływu charakterystyk opadowych na parametry hydrogramu odpływu ze zlewni zurbanizowanej, zlokalizowanej na terenie miasta Kielce. Do wyznaczenia hydrogramu odpływu zastosowano model hydrodynamiczny zlewni opracowany w programie SWMM. Do jego kalibracji wykorzystano wyniki badań deszczów i przepływów z lat 2009–2011. W artykule analizowano wpływ rozkładu natężenia opadu I, czasu jego trwania td i prawdopodobieństwa przewyższenia p na parametry hydrogramu odpływu: objętość fali Vc, przepływ maksymalny podczas kulminacji Qdmax, czas przyboru tp, współczynnik asymetrii rozkładu objętości ω. Wysokość opadu określono wzorem Bogdanowicz i Stachy’ego. W badaniach uwzględniono przebieg natężenia opadów opisanych rozkładem opracowanym przez SCS (ang. Soil Conservation Service) typ I, II, III, IV. Wykonane obliczenia wykazały, że wydłużenie czasu trwania deszczu powoduje zwiększenie objętości i wartości parametru kształtu fali odpływu ω, a także wydłużenie czasu przyboru (za wyjątkiem opadu opisanego rozkładem typu I o p = 50%).
The purpose of the article was to evaluate the impact of rainfall characteristics on hydrograph parameters of runoff from urbanized catchment located in the city of Kielce. Hydrodynamic model of the catchment was used with SWMM program to determine the outflow hydrograph. The records of rains and flows since 2009 till 2011 were used for calibration. The effect of rain intensity distribution, its duration td and probability p on hydrograph parameters: wave volume Vc, maximum flow during culmination Qdmax , time of water rising tpand the asymmetry of volume distribution ω was analysed in the paper. The amount of precipitation was determined with the Bogdanowicz and Stachỳ equation. Rainfall intensity distributions SCS type I, II, III, IV were consider in the study. Calculations showed that extending rain duration increased the volume of outflow, hydrograph parameter ω and the time of water rising. The exception was the rainfall of SCS type I, for p = 50% as in this case the higher was td value, the smaller was the shape parameter of inflow hydrograph from the catchment.

Opis:
It is important to investigate the hydrological consequences of current climate change. Hydrological responses to climate warming and wetter conditions include changes in discharge (frequency, amplitude, and volume). This paper describes current climate change and its impact on hydrological flow within the Horyn River basin. Daily air temperature and precipitation data obtained from the 17 meteorological stations located in and nearby the Horyn River basin, in combination with hydrological data (such as daily water discharges obtained from 9 water gauges), were used for the analysis of climate variability and its hydrological consequences. Analyses of meteorological variables and water discharges are crucial for the assessment of long-term changes in the river regime. Thiessen polygons were used to determine the area of influence of assigned specific meteorological stations, which affect the river’s catchments within the Horyn River basin. As a result of the trend analysis, it was observed that discharge within the Horyn River basin decreased over time. These results were congruent with the trends of precipitation data and air temperature data of the stations determined by the Thiessen polygons and basin boundaries. To understand current changes in the daily flow in the basin, changes in air temperature and precipitation for the period 1991-2020 were compared with the period of the climatic norm (1961-1990). A similar analysis was done for daily water discharges. Increasing air temperature and decreasing precipitation in the current period led to a significant decrease in discharges in the Horyn River basin, especially during the spring flood period.
