Opis:
This paper describes a miniaturized model of a small size solar-hydrogen power installation with a reserve electricity source in the form of a fuel cell. The cell was powered with hydrogen generated in the electrolyzer in time periods when the photovoltaic panel works in suitable insolation conditions. Hydrogen was stored in a special tank, containing hydride releasing hydrogen in convertible reactions. The tests shown were performed in the summer and in various weather conditions. Conclusions confirmed the usefulness of the model for the design of full sized installations dedicated to summer cottages and similar objects. Modifications of the model were proposed with the aim to obtain quantitative test results needed for designing more efficient installations.

Many new zero-emission propulsion technologies are being developed today due to the need to reduce the atmospheric carbon dioxide emissions. The impact of the transport sector on the environment drives a need for innovation, including innovation in the rail transport sector specifically. At the TRAKO fair of rail vehicles the newest technological solutions have been presented. These new vehicles are expected to take over the rail transport sector in the coming decades. Many of the presented solutions and prototypes focused on using hydrogen as fuel for a system of hydrogen fuel cells, which are then used to produce the electricity needed to drive the vehicle. The development of hydrogen fuel technologies in vehicle drives in recent years allowed for a set of new solutions to appear for all types of rail vehicles and applications. Hydrogen powered rail vehicles for transporting cargo, passengers, and shunting vehicles have been shown. This article provides a discussion of the newest hydrogen solutions and vehicles sent to the market. It was determined that the adoption of such solutions will be mainly restricted by the relative cost of the hydrogen fuel rather than the vehicles or fuel cell technologies themselves. The cost of hydrogen production, when powered by renewable Energy sources to enable reduced carbon dioxide emissions, would need to be reduced to at least $2.50 /kg of fuel in order to satisfy the requirements for widespread adoption.

The article describes the main options for using hydrogen as an energy storage and carrier, and for using fuel cells in distributed energy. It presents the possibilities of integrating hydrogen and fuel cell technology solutions with renewable energy sources in independent power systems for the building industry. Hydrogen produced by electrolysis can be stored in scalable high-pressure (200–350 bar) and low-pressure hydrogen storage tanks and then used to generate electricity from fuel cells. The use of alternative fuels (e.g. methanol) as hydrogen carriers for auxiliary power systems in building industry is also an interesting option. Another important feature of the distributed systems under consideration is the possibility of recovering and using waste heat, both from fuel cells and hydrogen processes.

Opis:
Renewable energy application is gaining a wide acceptance by end users; however, considering the fact that renewable energy is intermittent, variable and cannot be predicted, the need of storage systems is becoming a necessity at both micro and macro levels. Fuel cell technology is one of the most promising storage systems due to the fact that hydrogen has high energy density. This paper presents a design of stand-alone PV-PEMFC hybrid system for a small house under Amman climate. The simulation results show that the optimal size of PV array, fuel cell (PEMFC), inverter, electrolyzer (ELE) and H2 Tank capacity were 10 kW, 1 kW, 5 kW, 6 kW, and 5 kg respectively. Hydrogen proved itself as a low carbon energy source, which is environmental friendly and characterized with high energy content per unit mass. Due to fuel cells technology, hydrogen can be used for inter-season storage.

Opis:
In 2018 during the 72nd session of the Maritime Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC) IMO adopted its initial strategy for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from the ships to meet the Paris Agreement Goals, 2015. This is considered as a major milestone in formulizing a clear strategy by IMO towards its objective of reducing the global GHG emissions from the ships. The strategy had two primary objectives: the first was to decrease total annual GHG emissions by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008 levels. The second objective was to promote the phasing out of GHG emissions entirely. In 2020, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) conducted a study which revealed that greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from shipping had increased by 9.6%. The rise in global maritime trade was identified as the main factor behind this increase. IMO's 2020 study also concluded that reducing GHG emissions by focusing only on energy-saving technologies and ship speed reduction would not be enough to meet the IMO's 2050 GHG reduction target. Therefore, greater attention needs to be given to the use of low-carbon alternative fuels. To understand the effectiveness of currently available technologies in reducing GHG emissions from ships, a literature survey was conducted in this study. The survey examined a range of related articles published between 2018 and 2022. This study aimed to identify the current stage and the quantity of literature available on various technologies and, more importantly, serve as a decision-making support tool for selecting a technology under specific circumstances in a quantitative manner. The technologies were divided into four groups: those that utilize fossil fuels, those that use renewable energy, those that use fuel cells, and those that use low-carbon or alternative fuels. The literature survey was conducted using Web of Science (WoS) and Google Scholar. The results of this study will also help to identify clear research gaps in comparing the effectiveness of various available technologies to reduce GHG emissions. Ultimately, the aim is to develop a comprehensive strategy that can be used to reduce GHG emissions from shipping and contribute to the global fight against climate change.

Opis:
A hybrid energy system (HES) including hydrogen fuel cell systems (FCS) and a lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery energy storage system (ESS) is established for hydrogen fuel cell ships to follow fast load transients. An energy management strategy (EMS) with hierarchical control is presented to achieve proper distribution of load power and enhance system stability. In the high-control loop, a power distribution mechanism based on a particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) with an equivalent consumption minimization strategy (ECMS) is proposed. In the low-level control loop, an adaptive fuzzy PID controller is developed, which can quickly restore the system to a stable state by adjusting the PID parameters in real time. Compared with the rule-based EMS, hydrogen consumption is reduced by 5.319%, and the stability of the power system is significantly improved. In addition, the ESS degradation model is developed to assess its state of health (SOH). The ESS capacity loss is reduced by 2% and the daily operating cost of the ship is reduced by 1.7% compared with the PSO-ECMS without considering the ESS degradation.

Opis:
Among the possible electric powerplants currently driving low-payload UAVs (up to around 10 kg of payload), batteries offer certain clear benefits, but for medium-payload operation such as aerotaxis and heavy-cargo transportation UAVs, battery capacity requirements restrict their usage due to high weight and volume. In light of this situation, fuel cell (FC) systems (FCS) offer clear benefits over batteries for the medium-payload UAV segment (> 50 kg). Nevertheless, studies regarding the application of FCS powerplants to this UAV segment are limited and the in-flight performance has not been clearly analysed. In order to address this knowledge gap, a feasibility analysis of these particular applications powered by FCS is performed in this study. A validated FC stack model (40 kW of maximum power) was integrated into a balance of plant to conform an FCS. As a novelty, the management of the FCS was optimized to maximize the FCS efficiency at different altitudes up to 12500 ft, so that the operation always implies the lowest H2 consumption regardless of the altitude. In parallel, an UAV numerical model was developed based on the ATLANTE vehicle and characterized by calculating the aerodynamic coefficients through CFD simulations. Then, both models were integrated into a 0D-1D modelling platform together with an energy management strategy optimizer algorithm and a suitable propeller model. With the preliminary results obtained from the FCS and UAV models, it was possible to ascertain the range and endurance of the vehicle. As a result, it was concluded that the combination of both technologies could offer a range over 600 km and an endurance over 5 h. Finally, with the integrated UAV-FCS model, a flight profile describing a medium altitude, medium endurance mission was designed and used to analyse the viability of FC-powered UAV. The results showed how UAVs powered by FCS are viable for the considered aircraft segment, providing competitive values of specific range and endurance.
