Opis:
Model calculations were conducted to optimize and compare alternative schemes of CMS-line development in hybrid rye breeding on the basis of their expected selection gain per year assuming a fixed annual budget. Selection gains are predicted using current estimates of the relevant quantitative-genetic and economic parameters. Two alternative schemes are dealt with here. The first scheme (STD) represents a standard procedure in present-day second-cycle breeding. The second scheme (POP) is especially suited for population material that has not undergone intense inbreeding and selection yet. We:(i) give the optimum dimensioning of the schemes and their relative efficiency, (ii) study the effect of alterations in the dominance variance, the genotype × environment-interaction variance, and the budget, and (iii) assess how deviations from the optimum dimensioning affect the selection gain.Assuming identical genotypic variances, scheme STD is clearly superior to POP. It should thus always be used for second-cycle material. If, however, the population material used with scheme POP offers larger genotypic variances than the second-cycle material, POP becomes competitive. Changes in genetic and economic parameters affect the dimensioning but not the ranking of the schemes. Deviations from the optimum dimensioning only slightly reduce the selection gain as long as they are not too severe. This is shown for suboptimum numbers of testers and locations. All in all, the results demonstrate the importance of optimizing breeding schemes with respect to genetic, technical, and economic aspects.

Opis:
Evolutionary computation is a discipline that has been emerging for at least 40 or 50 years. All methods within this discipline are characterized by maintaining a set of possible solutions (individuals) to make them successively evolve to fitter solutions generation after generation. Examples of evolutionary computation paradigms are the broadly known Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and Estimation of Distribution Algorithms (EDAs). This paper contributes to the further development of this discipline by introducing a new evolutionary computation method based on the learning and later simulation of a Bayesian classifier in every generation. In the method we propose, at each iteration the selected group of individuals of the population is divided into different classes depending on their respective fitness value. Afterwards, a Bayesian classifier---either naive Bayes, seminaive Bayes, tree augmented naive Bayes or a similar one---is learned to model the corresponding supervised classification problem. The simulation of the latter Bayesian classifier provides individuals that form the next generation. Experimental results are presented to compare the performance of this new method with different types of EDAs and GAs. The problems chosen for this purpose are combinatorial optimization problems which are commonly used in the literature.

The paper focuses on problems which arise when two different types of AI methods are combined in one design. The first type is rule based, rough set methodology operating is highly discretized attribute space. The discretization is a consequence of the granular nature of knowledge representation in the theory of rough sets. The second type is neural network working in continuous space. Problems of combining these different types of knowledge processing are illustrated in a system used for recognition of diffraction patterns. The feature extraction is performed with the use of holographic ring wedge detector, generating the continuous feature space. No doubt, this is a feature space natural for application of the neural network. However, the criterion of optimization of the feature extractor uses rough set based knowledge representation. This latter, requires the discretization of conditional attributes generating the feature space. The novel enhanced method of optimization of holographic ring wedge detector is proposed, as a result of modification of indiscernibility relation in the theory of rough sets.

Opis:
This article presents the advantages of hybrid approach to the support decision making by analyzing three areas of business decision problems, solved by combination of well-known algorithms into the new hybrid constructions: cascade optimization hybrid, parallel classification hybrid and hybrid multicomponent attribute selection. Each of them solved a different problem: the cascade optimization hybrid allowed for finding an extreme of a composite objective function, the parallel classification hybrid was used to choose a proper class through voting, the multicomponent attribute selection robustly chose significant decision variables. A hybrid approach to the problem of supporting the decision making processes is more effective than using each of the component methods alone, even for the sophisticated ones. A combination of several methods with different characteristics and performance makes it possible to take advantages of their strong sides and simultaneously eliminate the weak ones, resulting in a better computational support of decision making.

In this paper we investigate the hybridization of two swarm intelligence algorithms; namely, the Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm (ABC) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The hybridization technique is a component-based one, where the PSO algorithm is augmented with an ABC component to improve the personal bests of the particles. Three different versions of the hybrid algorithm are tested in this work by experimenting with different selection mechanisms for the ABC component. All the algorithms are applied to the well-known CEC05 benchmark functions and compared based on three different metrics, namely, the solution reached, the success rate, and the performance rate.

This paper shows the results of analyzing the effectiveness and efficiency of a hybrid approach against a variety of optimization problems. An application with a serial-optimization structure, consisting of several methods with different characteristics, is presented. In order to evaluate the initial effectiveness of the hybrid optimization method, a number of test tasks, represented by complex functions with many variables, were examined. Additionally, a real-life case, determining an optimal product variety in a supermarket environment, regarding the highest rate of return for given conditions and limitations, is presented as an instance of the practical use of a hybrid algorithm. The research shows that the results achieved by the hybrid- -optimization method are highly satisfactory, both in terms of efficiency as well as effectiveness.

Opis:
The paper offers a new approach to handling difficult parametric inverse problems in elasticity and thermo-elasticity, formulated as global optimization ones. The proposed strategy is composed of two phases. In the first, global phase, the stochastic hp-HGS algorithm recognizes the basins of attraction of various objective minima. In the second phase, the local objective minimizers are closer approached by steepest descent processes executed singly in each basin of attraction. The proposed complex strategy is especially dedicated to ill-posed problems with multimodal objective functionals. The strategy offers comparatively low computational and memory costs resulting from a double-adaptive technique in both forward and inverse problem domains. We provide a result on the Lipschitz continuity of the objective functional composed of the elastic energy and the boundary displacement misfits with respect to the unknown constitutive parameters. It allows common scaling of the accuracy of solving forward and inverse problems, which is the core of the introduced double-adaptive technique. The capability of the proposed method of finding multiple solutions is illustrated by a computational example which consists in restoring all feasible Young modulus distributions minimizing an objective functional in a 3D domain of a photo polymer template obtained during step and flash imprint lithography.

Opis:
The paper discusses the complex, agent-oriented hierarchic memetic strategy (HMS) dedicated to solving inverse parametric problems. The strategy goes beyond the idea of two-phase global optimization algorithms. The global search performed by a tree of dependent demes is dynamically alternated with local, steepest descent searches. The strategy offers exceptionally low computational costs, mainly because the direct solver accuracy (performed by the hp-adaptive finite element method) is dynamically adjusted for each inverse search step. The computational cost is further decreased by the strategy employed for solution inter-processing and fitness deterioration. The HMS efficiency is compared with the results of a standard evolutionary technique, as well as with the multi-start strategy on benchmarks that exhibit typical inverse problems’ difficulties. Finally, an HMS application to a real-life engineering problem leading to the identification of oil deposits by inverting magnetotelluric measurements is presented. The HMS applicability to the inversion of magnetotelluric data is also mathematically verified.

The hybrid structures show excellent performance on vibration reduction for ship, aircraft and spacecraft designs. Meanwhile, the topology optimization is widely used for structure vibration reduction and weight control. The design of hybrid structures considering simultaneous materials selection and topology optimization are big challenges in theoretical study and engineering applications. In this paper, according to the proposed laminate component method (LCM) and solid isotropic microstructure with penalty (SIMP) method, the mathematical formulations are presented for concurrent materials selection and topology optimizations of hybrid structures. Thickness distributions of the plies in laminate components are defined as materials selection design variables by LCM method. Relative densities of elements in the components are defined as topology design variables by SIMP method. Design examples of hybrid 3-bar truss structures and hybrid floating raft with vibration reduction requirements verified the effectiveness of the presented optimization models.

A hybrid maximum power point tracking method has been proposed for the photovoltaic system using a stochastic evolutionary search and a deterministic hill climbing algorithm. The proposed approach employs the particle swarm optimizer (PSO) to solve a dynamic optimization problem related to the control task in a PV system. The position of the best particle is updated by the hill climbing algorithm, and the position of the rest of the particles by the classic PSO rule. The presented method uses the re-randomization mechanism, which places five consecutive particles randomly, but in specified intervals. This mechanism helps track the maximum power point under partially shaded conditions.
