Opis:
The contemporary demands in different branches of engineering require application of new multi-component materials and structural systems. Appropriately chosen joining technology can offer significant enhancement of structural system performance in terms of effectiveness, reliability, safety and other design criteria. The modern applications of complex joints are of great technological interest as they permit to combine and to enhance the individual effects of each kind of joint. This is of great importance for modern applications in different branches of engineering: aerospace, mechanical and civil. Therefore in this paper we will focus on the analysis of mechanical response of adhesive joint of aluminium strips reinforced by rivets. The aim of the paper is to investigate experimentally the mechanical behaviour of adhesive joint of aluminium strips reinforced by rivets for industrial applications in aerospace. The considered joint was subjected to uniaxial loading. The tests in this paper were performed for: • classical adhesive joint in order to investigate material parameters for numerical modelling of the hybrid joint • hybrid joining of the structural elements in order to investigate the reinforcement effect. The experiments with application of digital image ARAMIS system allowed for on-line monitoring of the deformation process of the considered joining elements. The particular distributions of displacement fields at the joint surface were estimated for any stage of loading process. Numerical modelling was performed for experimentally investigated specimens. The materials parameters, necessary for calculation, were estimated from experiments. FEA modelling was done with the help of ABAQUS code.

Opis:
The paper presents a comparative analysis of the strength properties of single-lap assembly joints. Single-lap joints are commonly used in various structures because of their strength properties. Three types of joints, widely used in modern structures, were prepared and tested: adhesive, rivet, and hybrid adhesive-rivet joints. The experiments were carried out using aluminum alloy EN AW-2024, a structural material used in aviation. In the adhesive joints, the substrates were joined using a two-component epoxy adhesive composed of Epidian 53 epoxy resin and polymide curing agent (PAC) – Epidian 53/PAC/100:80. The rivet joints were formed using steel-aluminum blind rivets. The rivets were arranged in four different configurations. One of the very important structural factors considered when designing single-lap assembly joints is overlap length. In the present study, two overlap lengths were tested: 12 mm and 20 mm. The assembly joints were subjected to strength tests. Tensile-shear strength was determined. The results were analyzed statistically.

Two epoxy resin compounds were used as the adhesion interlayers at the interface between an injected glass fibre reinforced thermoplastic polymer PA6GF30 (polyamide 6 with 30% wt. of glass fibres) and steel sheet (DC01 steel, 0.5 mm thick). Both epoxy resins, Epidian62 and Epidian57, were filled with alumina particles (grain size of 3 µm ± 1%) in a volume rate of 100:29 epoxy resin - alumina. Steel sheets with cured layer of epoxy resin compounds were placed in the injection mold, then the PA6GF30 was injected between them. Shear strength tests were basis for the evaluation of the adhesion of the manufactured polymer-metal hybrid joints. SEM and optical microscopy analysis were used to investigate the structure of joints after shear deformation. Conversion rates of epoxy compounds and heat of curing reactions were investigated by using of differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). It was found that the highest strength of these joints was achieved for epoxy compounds based on Epidian62.

Opis:
The choice of proper joining technology is an essential aspect of designing and manufacturing activity. New product designs enforce joining different materials in a new joining method. Clinching is a relatively new joining technology in which sheet metal parts are deformed locally without use of any additional element. Combining clinching with adhesive bonding seems to be interesting hybrid joining method with new potential applications in manufacturing industry. The paper deals with discussion of technological aspects and experimental investigations of clinched lap joints of different metal strips combined with their adhesive bonding, which can be applied for different branches of engineering. The main purpose of using different types of sheet metals was to analyze their influences on the geometry and mechanical strength of the clinched joint. The experiments with application of Digital Image Correlation (DIC) system ARAMIS allowed for exact monitoring of the deformation process of considered hybrid joint. The clinched joint test specimens were carried out with laboratory test-stand which consisted of a pair of tools (punch and die) attached to C-frame hydraulic press.
Wybór właściwej technologii łączenia stanowi istotny aspekt projektowania i wytwarzania.

Opis:
The article presents the research results on the mechanical properties of aluminum alloy AW-5083 and its joints welded by hybrid method – traditional MIG and FSW. AW-5083 alloy is the most currently used in shipbuilding industry. Friction Stir Welding (FSW) – a new technology can be successfully used for butt-welding of different types of aluminum alloy sheets. FSW method can be an alternative to traditional arc welding methods i.e. MIG or TIG. Hybrid welding (FSW with MIG or TIG) could be used in cases when joining only by FSW is not possible. Welding parameters used for the connection of the sheets were presented. Metallographic analysis showed the correct construction of structural bonded joints. The research was carried out using a static tensile test in accordance with the requirements of the Standard PN-EN ISO 4136:2013-05. Flat samples cut perpendicular to the direction of rolling were used. The research was conducted at the temperature of +20ºC. The test shows that the mechanical properties of joints made by hybrid method compered to native material were lower. The tensile strength of joint was lower by 20% then native material 5083 while its yield stress was lower only about 6%. The biggest change was observed in case of plastic properties. Elongation of joint was over 50% lower compared to native material. Despite the decrease of mechanical properties, they meets the requirements of classification societies, so the conclusion is that hybrid method (FSW and MIG) of joining AW-5083 can be applied in shipbuilding industry.

Opis:
Using original cold-formed rivets in repairs of airframes of helicopters is difficult due to no access to inside parts of the airframe. Thus, the main aim of the study was to investigate the possibility to use the blind rivets or hybrid joints by verification the fatigue performance of such joints that must be better than with original rivets. Riveted and hybrid joints have been experimentally tested under static and fatigue loads. Furthermore, numerical calculations of stress distribution for strapped joint have been conducted. The test results covered fatigue life of lap joints and models of repaired airframe sheets using ordinary mushroom head rivets ref. 3558A-4-10, titanium driven blind bolts with pin, ref. MBF2110AB-05-150 and modified hybrid joints. Using titanium driven blind bolts with pin instead of ordinary hammer-bucked rivets, can improve the fatigue life of element made of aluminum alloy AW 2024T3. There are advantages of replacing riveted joints with modified hybrid (rivet & adhesive) joints in threefold increase in fatigue life of repaired airframe structures.
