Opis:
The paper assesses the performance of the risk models of the wind damage to the mountain forest stands located in the Tatra National Park (southern Poland). The models assume that the forest susceptibility to the damage from the wind depends on the characteristics of stands, their location and frequency of the occurrence of damage in the past. According to the methodology we built 5 variants of models, which take into account the following attributes: various stand features, forest type, regional factor of the damage to the the trees, thickness scrap, subversive and deadwood from the stand in the last 10 years, characteristics of the terrain: exhibition, slope inclination and altitude above sea level. The model output is a classification of the stand susceptibility to the wind damage expressed by a number between 0 and 3 (0.5 interval). The suitability of each variant was tested by comparing the in−class rate as well as the area and growing stock of undamaged and damaged stands. In this study we rated 2908 stands with a total area of 15,386.05 ha. Taking into account the risk class, it is possible to develop the appropriate procedures in order to limit the damage. The analysis conducted for the forests of the Tatra National Park showed high compliance of the developed risk models with the damages arising by the wind. This is confirmed by a particularly high proportion of damaged forest stands included in the class of high risk. Their fraction ranged from 43.8% (WR1) to 92.4% (WR5). Considering the position and stands characteristics the greatest damage arose at an altitude of 950 to 1000 m (70.2%) and the exposures NW, N and NE (60.2%).

Opis:
The aim of the study was to evaluate the area and volume of the windthrows caused by a downburst, which occurred early morning on July 8th , 2015 in the Międzylesie Forest District (south−western Poland). The wind velocity reached 270 km/h and the phenomenon caused damages similar to those observed after the hurricane. The most affected forest ranges included: Różanka, Nowa Wieś, Lesica, Goworów, Jodłów and Smreczyna. To evaluate the area of the windthrow in particular forest stands, the remote sensing data were used, whereas to estimate the total wood volume we applied the growth model and the average volume of the particular forest stands, gathered in the State Forests Information System (SILP) database. The volume of the windthrow evaluated by the forest rangers during some local investigation equaled 103 thousands m³, while one calculated using the SILP database – 161 thousands m³ and with the growth model – 168 thousands m³. The forest service estimations were underestimated. According to the model of the wind damage risk, most of the forest stands in the Międzylesie Forest District were highly or very highly endangered by the strong winds. The presence of the windtrhow is very dangerous either for people or the surrounding forest (due to the risk of pests outbreak). Therefore it demands immediate decisions and actions from the forest service, which need reliable and quickly accessible data. The information provided with the satellite imagery, the risk model and the growth model may accelerate the decision−making process and optimize the damage disposal. Satellite imagery also enables to estimate the amount of damage on the areas, which are hardly available for the foresters and their vehicles. Due to their high usefulness, growing availability and declining prices, these tools should be introduced to local forestry as quickly as possible.

Opis:
Late Devonian coarse-grained carbonate deposits in the Holy Cross Mountains were studied for possible storm depositional systems and catastrophic tsunami events, as it must be assumed that the investigated area was strongly affected by tropical hurricanes generated in the open ocean North of Gondwana. This assumption appears consistent with diagnostic features of carbonate tempestites at several places in the Holy Cross Mountains. Sedimentary structures and textures that indicate so are, among other evidence, erosional bases with sole marks, graded units, intra- and bioclasts, different laminations and burrowing at the tops of tempestite layers. It has been suggested before that a tsunami occurred during the Late Devonian, but the Laurussian shelf had an extensional regime at the time, which excludes intensive seismic activity. The shelf environment also excluded the generation of tsunami waves because the depth was too shallow. Additionally, the Holy Cross Mountains region was surrounded in the Devonian by shallow-marine and stable elevated areas: the Nida Platform, the Opatkowice Platform and the Cracow Platform to the South, and the elevated Lublin-Lviv area to the NE. Thus, tsunami energy should have been absorbed by these regions if tsunamites would have occurred.

Meteorological data collected by the author at Arctowski station from March to December 2008 revealed 72 days with hurricane winds in the Admiralty Bay. The results were compared with synoptic maps, wind data from Ferraz station and older data from Arctowski station. Winds in September 2008 reached the highest velocities (mean 32.0 m·s–1, gusts 80 m·s–1) ever measured in Admiralty Bay. 49% events of hurricane winds occurred while cold fronts were passing. Topography of King George Island affects winds distribution inside the bay. Hurricane winds accelerate ablation of glaciers on King George Island and cause serious problems for fi eldwork and maintaining of research stations in Antarctica.

The research was carried out in the economic and natural Forest Reserve ‘Yertys Ormany’ in Pavlodarsk Oblast (Kazakhstan) in 2018. In the middle of May, two barrier traps of the ‘Netocia’ type (30, in total) were installed on each research plot damaged by wind, fire and great pine web – spinning pine sawfly – Acantholyda posticalis Mats. Insects were caught every month, from mid−June to mid−August. 1521 insects belonging to 67 species and 23 families were caught in the traps. Beetles clearly dominated. We also observed a great pine web and sirex woodwasp Sirex noctilio Fabr. Of the beetles caught, 10% were thermophilic jewel beetles or metallic wood−boring beetles Buprestidae, among which Chalcophora mariana (L.) dominated. The highest average number of individuals was observed on sites damaged by A. posticalis, however, differences between the plots turned to be insignificant. The highest significant average number of species was observed on sites damaged by the fire and by the wind. The GLM analysis indicated the highest mean values of the Margalef index in plots damaged by fire and by the wind, but did not show significant differences between the average values of the fidelity index of the assemblages. The research confirmed the hypothesis of a greater number of species and individuals, and a higher diversity of pests in pine stands more strongly disturbed (i.e. damaged by the fire and by the wind). At the same time, there were no differences between the most seriously disturbed variants.

Opis:
On the basis of the wind damage risk model for forests using the data of the State Forests Information System, the stand damage risk factor Wr for each of the 430 forest districts in Poland and the threat measure Ms for a given forest district were determined. The measure of threat to forest Ms for a forest district is a methodical basis for assessing the potential damage to forests in Poland. Its value ranges from 8.1% for the Brzózka Forest District to 48.9% for the Ujsoły Forest District (fig. 1), giving the average value of 24.6% and standard deviation of 7.03%. The measure Ms was the basis for differentiating the levels of threat of wind damage to forest for forest districts. Level 1 (Ms≤10%) indicates low threat, level 2 (10%40%) – very high threat. Low threat to forests was found only in two forest districts located in the western part of the country. 113 forest districts, which form large concentrations particularly in western and central Poland, are exposed to an elevated threat. Most forest districts (233) are classified to a group of moderate threat. They are located across the country and are mostly concentrated in the northern and southern regions of Poland. 71 forest districts exposed to high threat are concentrated in the south of Poland in the Carpathians and the Sudetes, with scattered presence in the north of the country. Most of the 11 forest districts with a very high threat to forests are located in the mountains (tab., fig. 1). For the forest districts with a particularly high and very high threat, new silvicultural procedures and the basis for decision making in the field of forest management should be developed to reduce the risk of damage to forest.

Opis:
Extreme weather events such as hurricanes, floods or fires become more and more common phenomena in Europe. In August 2017, strong wind accompanied by heavy thunderstorms caused severe damage over the large area in central and western Poland. According to rapid damage assessment prepared by the State Forests authorities a few days after the windthrow, ca 79.7 thousand hectares of forest was damaged and 9.8 million of cubic meters of wood was lost. Assessment of such a large−scale forest damage is difficult without using the remote sensed data. In this study, we examined the potential of the European satellite Sentinel−2 data for assessment of the forest damage caused by the windthrow. The assessment was performed using a difference between a normalized difference moisture index (NDMI) calculated based on the pre− and post−damage Sentinel−2 images. NDMI was calculated based on NIR (824 nm) and SWIR (1610 nm) bands. The result of this study showed the total damage area in forest is equal to 35.8 thousand hectares, of which 27.7 thousand hectares was damaged within the State Forests and 8.1 thousand hectares outside the State Forests administration. These figures are much lower than the estimates by the State Forests, regarding the forest damage within the State Forests and higher comparing to estimations in the non−state forest. In fact, these figures are comparable with the heavily damage areas assigned to clearance by the State Forests. The accurate comparison of the results was not possible due to the lack of up−to−date information on forest damage. Sentinel−2 data revealed to be perfect data for large scale damage assessment and post−damage forest monitoring mainly due to the wide swath up to 290 km. The limitation of the optical sensors is the cloudiness. Unfortunately, in the case of this analysis, the first cloud free image was acquired 6 weeks after the windthrow. It reduces the potential of the single−source data for rapid assessment of damages.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of a three−year research on ground beetle (Carabidae) assemblages conducted in the stands of the Piska Primeval Forest damaged by the 2002 hurricane and in control stands. Observations were carried out in the stands categorised into 5 age classes: class I (20−40 years), class II (40−50 years), class III (50−60 years), class IV (60−70 years) and class V (over 70 years). Beetles were caught using modified Barber's traps. The soil CO2 efflux rate and C:N ratio were measured. The Ward cluster analysis and Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) clearly distinguished between carabid assemblages in the stands damaged by the hurricane and control stands. In damaged stands there was an increase in the number of Carabidae species with the simultaneous decrease in their abundance. The proportion of forest and European species has been considerably reduced. A marked decline in abundance of hygrophilous species in favour of xerophylous ones was also noted. The observed reduction in the SPC (Sum of Progressive Characteristics) index may indicate the preservation of changes in carabid assemblages and that their regeneration has not yet started.

Intraspecific differentiation in body size was investigated for Carabus arcensis, C. violaceus and Pterostichus niger populations inhabiting pine forests disturbed by the hurricane and non−disturbed ones. Post−hurri−cane stands were localized in Szast Reference Forest (Pisz Forest District, NE Poland) disturbed by the hurricane in July 2002 and left "untouched" as an experimental area. Non−affected stands were set in Maskulińskie Forest District (NE Poland). Beetles were sampled using pitfall traps. The hurricane contributed to significant reduction in both C. arcensis and C. violaceus body length. However, an opposite trend was observed for P. niger, which increased considerably in body size in disturbed stands compared to control ones. The most pronounced changes were observed in 2007. Differences in habitat preferences and food resources utilization of C. arcensis, C. violaceus and P. niger are discussed.
