    The aim of this study was to present the current situation of trichinellosis, basing on the results of examination of the tissues of animals hunted in Poland. Investigation was carried out from 1st January to 30th June 2022 in the Department of Parasitology and Parasitic Diseases of National Veterinary Research Institute in Poland. Samples were collected out of 103 wild boars (Sus scrofa) and one wolf (Canis lupus), originating from 14 voivodeships. The study of wild boars muscle tissues revealed 89 positive samples, including 60 T. spiralis, 21 T. britovi, two T. pseudospiralis, and five mixed invasions with T. spiralis and T. britovi. In one case no amplification products were obtained. T. britovi was also found in the sample of wolf muscle tissue. This study emphasize the fact that trichinellosis in hunting animals is still a zoonotic threat, and should be closely monitored.

    Due to the principle of sustainable development and placement of the Hunting Law in the system of protection of natural environment, admission of archery as a method of hunting on the territory of the Republic of Poland may raise – according to the author – doubts. Extending the arsenal of hunting weapons by a bow could find a justification only in the situation, when, based on independent scientific research, it would confirm the thesis that the bow can be effective for purposes of the hunting economy and can constitute a weapon at least as humanitarian and safe as a hunting firearm.

    The aim of this study is assessment of game management in a controlled hunting zone in the vicinity of Uniejów (Hunting District No. 51), as well as assessment of changes in the number of game animals populations. The analysis also comprises changes in agriculture and in the biotope. Data on population sizes were obtained from annual hunting plans prepared by the Hunting Club No. 19 “Diana” in Łódź. The study covers the period 1990–2016.

    The article of Sara Kruszona entitled The Theater of Death treats the spectacular-theatrical character of collective hunts. The author puts forward the thesis that these hunts can be read as a form of a spectacle. The starting point for consideration was the article Customs and hunting ceremonies in collective hunts, derived from the website of the Hunting Signals Group, “Hagard”. This text is a kind of a scenario of hunting ceremonies taking place during collective hunts. By quoting its fragments in his text on the Theater of Death, the author proves the thesis about the pageantry of hunting rituals. Events which take place during hunting, their organization and arrangement, whose important aspects include tradition and ritual character, interpreted as a kind of spectacle. It was similar to the ancient venatio. The author also refers to the ancient roots of performances with the participation of hunters, i.e. venatio, described by Miroslaw Kocur in his book entitled The Roots of the Theater. A particularly important argument for the possibility of considering hunting as a form of a show is the hunters’ awareness of role–playing and audience presence. This can be understood by guests invited to the hunt as well as opponents of hunting, or as a community focused on their activity and ready to criticize it. The awareness of the presence of spectators determines the obvious awareness of playing whether the hunters perform a specific social function in the spectacle called hunting. The finale of this performance, played according to a strictly defined scenario and with strictly assigned roles, is pokot. The author draws attention to the fact that the system of animal bodies and all activities related to them resemble a specific form of a spectacle – anatomical theater.

    The audit covered almost all stages of the hunting management, starting with administrative activities, such as division of regions into hunting districts and categorisation thereof, leasing of hunting districts and their management transfer, as well as calculation and distribution of rent for their use. The issues related directly to hunting have also been audited, such as the regularity and realisation of annual hunting plans, documentation of hunting, realisation of statutory objectives by game protection centres, securing of the State Treasury’s and citizens’ interests with regard to damages due to hunting, analysis of financial results of hunting management, the functioning of the State Hunting Guard, and the supervision of hunting.

    Artykuł jest próbą odczytania tzw. zwierzęcej prozy Bohumila Hrabala w kontekście i przy wykorzystaniu niektórych pojęć współczesnych animal studies, szczególnie tych, które bezpośrednio lub pośrednio, odnoszą się do problematyki szeroko rozumianego polowania. Przez prozę zwierzęcą autor rozumie te utwory czeskiego pisarza, w których bohaterami – nierzadko protagonistami czy też narratorami – są zwierzęta dzikie, udomowione, hodowlane, a także ptaki ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem gołębi miejskich i pocztowych. W całej prozie zwierzęcej Hrabala zauważalne jest rozdarcie jej ludzkich narratorów i bohaterów pomiędzy poczuciem winy wobec braci mniejszych a przekonaniem, że powrót do stanu, kiedy zwierzęta rządziły się swoimi prawami, który określić by można mianem naturalnego, to klasyczny przykład myślenia życzeniowego.   
    The article aims to interpret the so-called ‘animal prose’ by Bohumil Hrabal using some of the contemporary tools developed within animal studies, especially those that directly or indirectly address the broadly understood question of hunting. By ‘animal prose’ the author of this article understands these works by the Czech writer whose protagonists or narrative personae are wild, domesticated and breed animals, including the domestic and homing pigeons. All Hrabal’s works show a discernible tension in the human protagonists, torn between the species guilt and the realization that a return to the natural state is a classic example of wishful thinking.

    W II Rzeczypospolitej problem kłusownictwa był bardzo poważnym wyzwaniem i nigdy nie został znacznie ograniczony. W latach 1918–1939 z tym przestępstwem bezskutecznie walczyli policja, straż leśna oraz myśliwi. Kłusownicy byli niebezpiecznymi i nieprzewidywalnymi ludźmi, często zabijali myśliwych, leśników, a także nie wahali się strzelać do policjantów. W międzywojennej Polsce działalność kłusowników poważnie zagrażała istnieniu populacji nawet pospolitych zwierząt.
    Poaching in the Second Polish Republic was a serious problem that was never quite resolved. In 1918–1939, it was actively fought against by the police, forest guards and hunters. Poachers were dangerous and unpredictable people; they often killed hunters and foresters, they did not hesitate to fire at policemen. In interwar Poland poaching was a real threat to species, even to common animals.

    The article contains an overview of arguments that occur in debates around recreational hunting. The author analyzes the postulates that hunters and their proponents refer to (such as national culture related to history, tradition, rituals), positioning them against counterarguments, indicating their outdated character and aiming at moral condemnation of hunting.
    В статье рассматриваются аргументы, используемые в дискуссиях вокруг любительской охоты. Автор анализирует постулаты, на которые ссылаются охотники и сторонники охоты (такие как народная культура, связанная с историей, традициями и обрядами); приводятся также контраргументы, указывающие на то, что доказательства в защиту охоты устарели, и ведущие к осуждению охоты с нравственных позиций.
    W artykule dokonano przeglądu argumentów używanych w debatach wokół myślistwa rekreacyjnego. Poddano analizie postulaty, do których odwołują się myśliwi i zwolennicy polowań (jak kultura narodowa związana z historią, tradycją, rytuałami); przywołano też kontrargumenty wskazujące na dezaktualizację twierdzeń wysuwanych w obronie myślistwa oraz ze względów moralnych potępiono myślistwo.

    Opis:
    This article presents the issues of the wild animal welfare, basing on the example of the deer family members, implemented by hunters as part of the conducted hunting management and individual selection, focused on the lack of undesirable individuals. This way of managing renewable natural resources seems to be rational, as it creates the possibility of using the population of individual species on the principles of sustainable development. It allows to regulate population structure, mainly its density and gender and age structures, which directly affect aspects related to animal welfare. At the same time, it was proposed to assess the welfare of wild animals through a modified principle of the five freedoms applicable to pets. Due to behavioral specifics, as well as living conditions and fulfilling basic life functions, such assessment should be based on the “principle of six groups of activities”, performed as part of managing individual populations. Meeting the guidelines resulting from the proposed principle, should ensure optimal conditions for the welfare of wild animals, as well as set out research directions for the assessment of their welfare.
