The nu mer ous dystrophic (humic) lakes are a very im por tant fea ture of Wigry Na tional Park, NE Po land. As the most re cent palaeo eco logi cal data in di cate, at the be gin ning of its de vel op ment (in the Late Gla cial and Early and Mid dle Ho lo cene) these wa ter bod ies func tioned as har mo ni ous lakes, and their trans for ma tion into dystrophic lakes and the sta bi li za tion of the trophic state took place at the be gin ning of the Subboreal. Palynological anal y sis of sed i ments from two such lakes (Lake OElepe and Lake Suchar II), with spe cial em pha sis on non-pol len palynomorphs (NPPs), was aimed at a de tailed bi o log i cal char ac ter iza tion of dystrophic lakes dur ing their long-last ing ex is tence. The ob tained re - sults al lowed for the des ig na tion of or gan isms char ac ter is tic for dystrophic lakes, of which rep re sen ta tives ap peared with the de creas ing pH of the wa ter and the for ma tion of Sphag num peat around lakes. These or gan isms were di vided into four groups: al gae, fungi, tes tate amoe bas, and an i mals. Their rep re sen ta tives ap pear in var i ous de vel op men tal stages of dystrophic lakes.

Opis:
Peculiarities of radiocesium contamination of a small humic lake, which became meromictic some thirty-five years ago due to the inflow of a large amount of humic water, are presented. The lake consists of two separate water layers, which do not intermix. A lower water layer of the lake below some 3-m depth is stagnant and anaerobic, and radiocesium load of the sediments is mainly caused by nuclear weapons fallout. The radiocesium load of the sediments of the upper monomictic water layer is significantly larger due to additional contamination after the Chernobyl accident. Radiocesium activity concentrations in lake water increase with depth, and even in the surface layer, they are commonly the largest among the neighboring lakes with transparent water. It is shown that bottom areas of the monomictic part of the lake with the elevated radiocesium deepening into sediments are related to the favorite sites of the tench (Tinca tinca) winter torpor. Sediment bioturbation and redistribution due to tench activities distort naturally formed radiocesium vertical profiles and they cannot be used for estimations of sedimentation rates and sediment chronology. The studied lake can be useful as an analogous model in analyzing structural and radiological consequences of humic water inflows to closed lakes. Concerning extreme radiological situations in closed humic lakes related to their specific vertical structure, they may be treated as critical objects in assessing the risk to humans after radionuclide deposition events.

Opis:
This paper addresses underwater vegetation in soft water lakes which are influenced by the anthropogenic input of allochtonic dissolved organic matter (DOM) from drained bogs. The aim of this work is to test the hypothesis regarding the role of DOM in shaping the diversity of underwater vegetation. Large differences in underwater vegetation habitats, the limitation of their occurrence to increasingly shallower littoral (the depth of the lower limit of their occurrence decreased from 12 m up to 1 m) and the regression of underwater vegetation were observed in lake types ranging from oligohumic (median (Me) of DOC in water = 2.5 mg C dm-3) to polyhumic (Me of DOC = 35.6 mg C dm-3). The gradual simplification of internal plant patch structure occurred and the Shannon-Weaver diversity index decreased (Me 0.04 → 0.00). Fewer species were observed in the lakes (Me 9 → 2), and the underwater vegetation covered increasingly smaller areas. Species replacement did not occur and no invasive species appeared.

Opis:
The antimicrobial activity of twelve preparations of humic substances isolated from sea water, marine bottom sediments and lake water was examined. Humic substances from marine bottom sediment samples were fractionated into humic and/or fulvic acids. The susceptibility of 11 strains of anaerobic, 8str ains of aerobic bacteria and 2 strains of yeast-like fungi to preparations of humic substances, humic and/or fulvic acids was determined employing the plate dilution technique in Brucella agar (anaerobic bacteria), Mueller-Hinton agar (aerobic bacteria) and Sabouraud agar (yeast-like fungi). Concentrations from 150 to 600 μg ml−1 of the preparations examined inhibited the growth of numerous microorganisms (Table). The results obtained seem to indicate that humic substances are involved in the self-purification of sea and lake waters.

Opis:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a biological humic preparation - “HUMIN PLUS”, made from natural raw materials - environmentally friendly lake sapropel on the biological development of agricultural crops. The study consisted in obtaining information and assessing the effect of a biological product on the dynamics of seedlings development, planting density, as well as crop productivity. To assess the preparation, as well as to identify the effect on the stages of plant ontogenesis, the physicochemical parameters were studied, including the content of humates, and trace elements in the sapropel extract. To interpret the effect of the growth regulator on the seed germination energy, an adaptive-neural inference system was used. To establish the nature of the action of preparation on the development biology of plant, in the conditions of Kazakhstan, a series of experiments were carried out at different stages of ontogenesis of agricultural crops. It was found that the action of the “HUMIN PLUS” preparation significantly increases the content of essential and nonessential amino acids. The findings have established that the sapropel extract “HUMIN PLUS” affects the biological activity of plants, accelerating the seed germination and increasing the productivity of agricultural crops in Kazakhstan.
