Opis:
Humic and fulvic acids are important materials for the health of the soil. This is related to the capability of humic and fulvic acids as chelating agent for pollutant in soil. The relationship between humic and fulvic acids with that of the soil properties is an important aspect to determine the characteristics of soil. Furthermore, production of humic and fulvic acids is a time-consuming process with several stages. Regarding this problem, the selection of sample size to study humic and fulvic acids is important. The relationship between the soil properties was analysed using the Partial Least Square (PLS) analysis, which is regarded as a solution to solve the analysis of complicated problems by offering a powerful approach. This study aimed to analyse the relationship between humic and fulvic acids, in terms of their mineral and physicochemical properties using the PLS method. The study was carried out in West Java, Indonesia. The results showed that the relationship between the chemical, physical, mineral contents with humic and fulvic acids, affected the negative and positive aspects of the relationship. Humic acids had a weak to good model category (0.269–0.940) with regards to the soil properties, and fulvic acids had a moderate model category (0.495–0.603) against all soil properties. Thus, the PLS method can solve a problem in study relationship between the soil properties with small sample and can help in understanding the soil characteristics in general.

Opis:
The young coal mining pits (young pits) found in West Aceh cause many problems. These pits that form ponds have the potential to be utilized for aquaculture activities. However, the main problem faced in the young pits is the high content of heavy metals. This makes the ponds dangerous for fish farming. Hazardous heavy metals in coal mines are Pb and Fe. Humic acid is one of the materials that can be used to minimize heavy metals and increase water pH. The use of humic acid is more efficient because this technology is easy and cheap and the raw materials are abundant. Humic acid acts as a substance of cation exchange ability found in compost. This research has a long-term goal of making humic acid contained in compost as an alternative material that can minimize heavy metals Pb and Fe, so that it can be used for fish farming activities. The specific objective is to determine the best capacity (dose of humic acid) in minimizing heavy metals and increasing the pH of young pond water in former mines and its effect on fish farming. This research method used a completely randomized design consisting of one factor, namely the dose of humic acid (0 g/L, 2.5 g/L, 5 g/L, 7.5 g/L) and three replications. The results showed that humic acid was able to minimize the content of heavy metals Pb and Fe in coal mine water with the best dose of 5 g/L. The percentage reduction produced was more than 90%. The results of fish rearing using ex-mining pond water treated with humic acid showed that the survival rate and growth rate of fish were higher.

Porous carbons obtained from poly(ethylene terephtalate) contained in a mixture with either MgCO3 or Mg(OH)2 were examined as adsorbents for removal of humic acid from water. Adsorption of the model contaminants is discussed in relation to the textural parameters of the obtained carbon materials. Pore structure parameters of the carbonaceous materials were strongly influenced by preparation conditions including temperature and relative amounts of the inorganics used during preparations as template. Porous carbons prepared revealed a potential to purify water from the model contaminant of high molecular weight. The results presented confirmed a key role of mesoporosity in the adsorption of humic acid. Fluorescence spectroscopy was confirmed to be an useful method to evaluate concentration of humic acid in water.

Opis:
Nitrogen is one of the key components of plant production and the nitrogen requirement of the plant supplied either by mineral nitrogen applications or by biological nitrogen fixation. Although the atmosphere contain huge amount of N2, plants are not able to use that as a nitrogen source. Immediately usable forms of nitrogen are nitrate (NO3-) or ammonium (NH4+). The bonds between two nitrogen atoms are quite strong thus, reducing N2 gas to mineral nitrogen forms needs considerable high amount of energy. However, in biological life, microorganisms may convert N2 to mineral nitrogen sources in ambient temperature and pressure; therefore, biological nitrogen fixation is both environmental friendly and sustainable. Industrial nitrogen fixation and mineral fertilization leads both environmental pollution and economic impact. In this research, the effects of humic+fulvic acid (HFA) on nitrogen fixation were evaluated. For this purpose, a pot experiment in controlled environment was carried out. Peanut seeds were sawn in the hole prepared after dual application of HFA doses and rhizobium bacteria. Two times sampling was realized, one in the flowering and the other in harvest time. Results revealed that HFA application was effective on biologic nitrogen fixation; however, increasing HFA doses were adversely influenced determined parameters. Due to the soybean was cultivated as a forecrop at the field where the experimental soil is collected, nodulation was observed even at non-inoculated pots. Nevertheless, the higher values obtained from inoculated plants. Based on the results presented in the paper, HFA was positively effective on a number of parameters evaluated, yet the lower doses should be recommended.

This work presents the characteristics of humic substances, with particular emphasis on the properties of agricultural importance, i.e., the improvement of soil structure, soil properties and the availability of nutrients. Attention was also paid to the methods of introducing given substances into the soil and the possibility of direct application to the plant surface. The mechanisms responsible for the stimulating and protective effect of humic substances on plant development were explained in detail, including phytohormonal regulation, the mitigation of biotic and abiotic stresses, antioxidant properties and the influence on seed germination and the development of the plant root system. The economic and environmental importance of the application of the substances in question was also emphasized, consisting of maintaining the health of the soil and the quality of plants while reducing the share of chemical fertilizers and reducing the amount of water used. It should be noted that humic substances, like any agricultural product, should be appropriately selected for the type of cultivation, i.e., the optimal dose and method of application should be determined.

Opis:
Salinity stress is a serious problem in urban landscape of arid and semi arid regions. To overcome the adverse impact of salinity, the application of organic matter and plant nutrients in the growth media for improving the plant growth is essential. An experiment was conducted in order to determine the response of Salvia splendens to salinity levels and also the role of humic acid in the salt stress alleviation. In the current experiment, five salinity levels (0, 20, 40, 60, and 80 mM NaCl) and three humic acid (0, 100, 500 and 1000 mg/l) treatments were prepared. The effects of these treatments were investigated on some growth parameters, physiological characteristics and also biochemical compounds. The results indicated that the growth parameters decreased in saline-treated than control plants. Different salinity levels significantly affected relative water content, evaporation rate and also electrolyte leakage. Salinity caused the increase in proline, malondialdehyde, sugar content, DPPH, total phenol content and decrease in chlorophyll, compare to the control plants. Application of humic acid on Salvia splendens decreased the leaf area and plant height compared to the control plants. Thus, regarding the growth parameters, it is probable that the effect of humic acid on the biochemical compounds is similar to salinity effect. The findings suggest that sage is an ornamental plant sensitive to salinity and humic acid (in the studied levels) could not alleviate the negative effects of salt stress on this plant.

Soil is non-renewable and a very complex natural resource which performs many vital functions: food (99%) and other biomass production, storage, filtration and transformation of many substances including water, carbon, nitrogen. Soil as a top layer of the earth's crust is the first receiver of anthropogenic contaminants, and may or may not serve as a natural barrier to protect groundwater against contamination from the surface. One of the most important indicators of soil quality is soil organic matter (SOM), which is an important building block for the soil structure, formation of stable aggregates, and is able to improve the infiltration rates and the storage capacity of water. SOM presents a major pool carbon in the biosphere and can act both as a source and sink for carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Agricultural intensification and cultivation in general results in a serious decrease in SOM as compared to that in the natural vegetation. Presently, the protection of SOM is one of the main tasks in EU, because SOM in addition to its soil fertilizing function can act in the elimination of the soil contamination and carbon sequestration. In this context, humic substances (especially humic and fulvic acids) and cohesive fractions (clay, silt, silt clay, etc.) present in soil are favourable components. It is because of their high sorption capacity with respect to many contaminants, including heavy metals, which may results in their immobilisation and, consequently protect groundwater against contamination. Antropogenically transformed soils often do not contain humic substances (HS), thus their role as a natural barrier is decreased. Therefore, re-generation of HS through humification of organic matter from diverse sources added to soils, may be the way to re-built the protective character of soil barrier, and consequently to reduce environmental and/or health risks at areas under anthropopression. Transformation processes of brown coal applied to soil were described to evaluate the use of this material as an effective source of organic matter and HS generation in degraded soils. The goal of this study was to discuss fine brown coal derived preparation as effective sources of organic matter (and humic substances) especially in soils that are anthropogenically transformed. The research concerned the analysis of properties of HS as well as formations of humic acids (HAs) in soils after addition brown coal. Soil materials used in the research was collected from the long term field experiments and microplots, as the source of organic matter the Rekulter that is based (85%) on brown coal (soft smudge type) obtained from the Konin Basin deposits preparation was used. For qualitative characteristic of SOM, particularly, in HAs, modern analytical technique such as fluorescence intensity (FI) for 3-D EEM spectra was used. The lowest fluorescence intensity (FI) for 3-D EEM spectra were observed in the case of HAs extracted from rusty soil. The 20-years research results carried out on rusty soil (sandy) confirmed long-term effect of brown coal on soil properties as well as on organic matter that originated from this source.

Due to their properties, humic acids (HA) can interact with macro- and micronutrients and retain plant nutrients in the soil profile. The aim of the presented work was to develop a new integrated 4-step process for the isolation of humic acids from peat with their simultaneous enrichment in macronutrients. The study demonstrated the possibility of replacing traditional solutions used in the extraction of humic acids with solutions that are a source of macronutrients. For the alkaline extraction step, a process assisted with ultrasound was implemented, which allowed to increase the efficiency of humic acids isolation. Optimization of this step has shown that, with the application of ultrasound in the new procedure, it is possible to obtain the humic acids isolation efficiency of more than 60%. The qualitative analysis of the products obtained confirmed the presence of structures characteristic of humic acids, including key functional groups.

The phosphorus adsorption capacity of soil in the presence and absence of HA and FYM was determined by adding 0, 10, 20, 40, 60, 120, 240 and 360 mg L-1 (initially applied P, IPA) to 5 g soils with and without HA (10 mg kg-1) and FYM (20 g kg-1). The soils along with respective phosphorus solution were taken in duplicates, were shaken on horizontal shaker for 30 hr continuously. The suspension were then filtered through whattman-42 and analyzed for P which represented the equilibrium P concentration (EPC). These soils were then applied another 45 mL distilled water and shaken for 24 hr for desorption study. The study revealed that the soils treated with P+FYM and P+HA significantly decreased the adsorption of Phosphorous at each level of IPA as compared with soil treated with P alone. Furthermore in case of alone P the higher Xad and Kd values attributed towards more P adsorption, at any levels of IPA than the soil which received HA and FYM treatments. Soils treated with P+FYM and P+HA indicated higher desorption of P as well at any IPA than the soil treated with P alone, confirmed that FYM and HA not only reduced P adsorption but also played a vital role in the release of P from soil surfaces into soil solution. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms models were used in the study, however Freundlich model was found best fit in the present study. Such type of studies should be encouraged at field levels.

Opis:
Humic acids are a group of distinctive organic compounds, which are created in complicated biochemical processes, such as oxidation, condensation and polymerization of high-molecular products of plant and animal residue decomposition. They facilitate plants micronutrient uptake, improve soil structure, porosity and consequently aeration, water retention and also viscosity, firmness and creating aggregate structures. The aim of the research was to determine efficiency of humic acids extraction process, using different kinds and fineness of lignite. Stronger fines size reduction provides growth of active surface subjected to extractant treatment and better porosity of mass subjected to extraction, so as the lignite fineness decreasing the increase of efficiency of humic acids production is expected. Finding optimum fineness, which is a compromise between extraction efficiency and raw material grinding costs, will enable economical production of humic acids fertilizer agents.

Opis:
Humic substances are widely applied in many branches of the industry. Their most well-known usage are agricultural and horticultural markets. A popular method of obtaining of mentioned compounds with satisfactory efficiency is an alkaline extraction of them from organic raw materials like peat, leonardite or lignite. The growing use of humic acids preparations is conditioned by improvement of physical, chemical and biological properties of soils. Despite that fact, the use of mineral fertilizers still dominates. Therefore, it seems interesting to produce agents containing both humic substances and traditional fertilizing elements. Such products could be applied as soil improvers. For that reason we have modified the International Humic Substances Society (IHSS) method of humic substances extraction by changing types of extractants and other solutions into solutions of main macroelements (NPK) for plants. The aim of this research was to determine the efficiency of humic acids extraction from polish peat depending on process temperature, its duration and concentration of extractant.

Przeprowadzono badania nad wyznaczeniem izoterm adsorpcji kwasów humusowych, ekstrahowanych z węgla brunatnego i torfu, z modelowych roztworów wodnych na węglach pylistych CWZ-22, CWZ-30 I CWH-22 (Gryfskand, Hajnówka). Otrzymane w testach naczyniowych izotermy adsorpcji stanowiły podstawę do wyboru dawki pylistego węgla aktywnego i warunków prowadzenia procesu sorpcji.
Humic acids extracted from brown coal and peat were made subject to adsorption from model solutions, using three powdered active carbons (PAC), CWZ-22, CWZ-30 and CWH-22, as adsorbents (Gryfskand, Hajnowka). The relations between humic acid content, color, COD and UV absorbance are of practical significance. They make it possible to use the quick determination of the UV absorbance ( =254 nm) for assessing the values of the other water quality parameters. The isotherms of adsorption obtained in the jar tests enabled the choice of the dosage for the active carbon and the conditions for the sorption process. It has been demonstrated that the type of the humid acids that were present in the model solutions (extract from brown coal or extract from peat) exerted an influence on the carbon dose established on the basis of the adsorption isotherms. The PAC doses determined by the jar tests were slightly higher when the water contained a peat extract. The experiments with the choice of the active carbon dose have revealed that the quantity of the powdered active carbon required for attaining an equilibrium concentration of humic acids in treated water is in direct proportion to their concentration in raw water.

Opis:
Barwa wód podziemnych wywołana obecnością kwasów huminowych stwierdzana jest w wodach ujmowanych z różnych warstw stratygraficznych, nawet w wysokiej jakości trzeciorzędowych wodach oligocenu. W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań laboratoryjnych nad zmniejszeniem intensywności barwy, utlenialności i absorbancji w UV (254 nm) w wyniku usuwania kwasów humusowych z wody przeznaczonej do spożycia w procesach utleniania, filtracji, sorpcji i koagulacji.
The colour of groundwater associated with the presence of humic acids is detected in the water drawn from various stratigraphic layers, even in high-quality Tertiary Oligocene water. The laboratory tests reported on in this paper aimed at reducing the coloured matter content, COD and UV absorbance (254 nm) that are concomitant with the removal of humic acids from potable water via oxidation, filtration, sorption and coagulation. The tests were carried out using filters with high-silica sand, pyrolusite or activated carbon beds, as well as reactors enabling sorption on powdered activated carbon and oxidation with ozone, potassium permanganate, or UV (256 nm) radiation. It has been demonstrated that under optimal process conditions the removal of coloured matter from the water during catalytic filtration totalled to 75%, during sorption on powdered activated carbon 93%, during coagulation in contact filters 93%, during oxidation with potassium permanganate 91%, during oxidation with ozone 92%, during oxidation involving UV radiation 20%, during oxidation with sequential doses of ozone and UV 78%, with sequential doses of UV and ozone 79%, and with combined UV + O3 doses 79%.
