Opis:
Petals of edible flowers (EF) are rich in biologically active compounds with many proven benefits for human health. However, studies on the effects of EF in humans after consumption are lacking. This pilot explorative study evaluated the changes in urinary phenolic excretion in healthy volunteers to whom different doses of phenolics from edible roses (Gourmet Roses™) have been added to a meal. Rose petals were picked fresh once a week for three weeks, showing significantly increasing values of total phenolic content, total anthocyanin content, and antioxidant activity (measured as ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and as DPPH• and ABTS•+ scavenging activities) from the first to the third week. After the meal, direct associations between urinary phenolics and both the EF phenolic content and the antioxidant activity were found in a multiple regression model. These new insights on EF consumption, to be confirmed by larger trials, suggest that the urinary phenolic excretion of healthy volunteers increases with increasing rose phenolic content.

Computer science is an interdisciplinary science characterized by a wide range of applications. Depending on the chosen specialization, the education of students is extended by the scope of issues relevant to other sciences - eg biology (bioinformatics) or economics (informatics and econometrics). The article presents the connections between computer science and social sciences. It has been shown that the education of IT students requires using the methodological workshop appropriate for these sciences.

Opis:
The aim of the paper is to evaluate the Human Development Index (HDI) as an indicator of economic development. The analysis is based on case studies of five post‑socialist countries: the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Lithuania, and Poland. To carry out the assessment of the HDI, two approaches are employed. The first involves comparing the HDI values to seventeen other indicators related to different aspects of development chosen with reference to Amartya K. Sen’s approach. The second approach refers to public opinion surveys provided by the Eurobarometer and the European Quality of Life Survey programs. In the light of the analysis, it can be said that the HDI is a fairly good measure of economic development. However, certain important dimensions which have a significant impact on people’s living conditions are neglected. Knowing about Sen’s influence on the creation of the HDI and the emphasis he put on the relationship between democracy and development, it may be surprising that such neglected dimensions include the state of democracy.

Opis:
The purpose of this study was to ascertain the problem behaviours among children of Filipino seafarers in Iloilo City, Philippines. The researchers used random sampling technique to determine the 200 respondents of the study. This research employed the descriptive method of analysis. The statistical tools were frequency and rank to describe the children problem behaviours. When taken as an entire group, data showed that the problem behaviours were self-centeredness, substance use, delinquency, and physical aggression. When grouped according to program, the problem behaviours were self-centeredness, delinquency, physical aggression, and substance use as reference to high school program, while those who were in college, the problem behaviours were self-centeredness, substance use, delinquency, physical aggression. When grouped according to sibling rank, the results showed that out of the 76 eldest children, the problem behaviours were self-centeredness, substance use, delinquency, and physical aggression. While, the problem behaviours of the 66 middle children of Filipino seafarers were self-centeredness, substance use, physical aggression, and delinquency. The 58 youngest children of Filipino seafarers’ problem behaviours were self-centeredness, substance use, physical aggression, and delinquency. When grouped according to gender, male children problem behaviours were self-centeredness, delinquency, substance use, and physical aggression. And, 86 female children problem behaviours were self-centeredness, delinquency, substance use, and physical aggression. As to the marital status, children whose parents were living, the problem behaviour were self-centeredness, substance use, delinquency, and physical aggression. Children of Filipino seafarers who had separated parents, the problem behaviours were self-centeredness, substance use, physical aggression, and delinquency.

Opis:
Background: There are many studies on software development teams, but few about the interactions between teams. Current findings suggest that these multi-team systems may have a significant impact on software development projects. Aim: The objective of this exploratory study is to provide more evidence on multi-team systems in software engineering and identify challenges with a potential impact on software quality. Method: A non-participatory approach was used to collect data on one development project within a large telecommunication organization. Verbal interactions between team members were analyzed using a coding scheme following the Grounded Theory approach. Results: The results show that the interactions between teams are often technical in nature, outlining technical dependencies between departments, external providers, and even clients. Conclusion: This article hypothesizes that managers of large software project should (1) identify external teams most likely to interfere with their development work, to (2) appoint brokers to redirect external requests to the appropriate resource, and to (3) ensure that there are opportunities to discuss technical issues at the multi-team level. Failure to do so could results in delays and the persistence of codebase-wide issues.

The paper is focused on some structural paradoxes touching the functioning of the PR activity in companies called „PSFC” (this abbreviation means: the Polish Subsidiary of Foreign Corporation). Because of its dualistic contexts and difficulties with its own identity deeply divided into two different aspects, the PFZK’s communication and its public image tend to suffer from the incoherence and inconsistence. The solution proposed for this issue may consist on the special structure observed in some happy achievements. It is built with two simultaneous approaches: ethical and praxeological using both the idea of “good” as “morally convenient” and “profitable”.

The effect of osmotic-convection drying on the mechanical properties of apples was studied. Both the osmotic dehydration and convection drying were shown to cause the changes in the mechanical properties of apples. These were manifested in the loss of natural 'tenderness' and an increase in the 'plasticity'. For the osmotic dehydration, the changes were the bigger, the higher were the degree and temperature of osmotic dehydration, and molecular weight of osmotic solute.
Celem przeprowadzonych badań była ocena stanu wiedzy z zakresu żywienia człowieka wśród młodzieży szkół średnich Krakowa. Ocenę stanu wiedzy przeprowadzono metodą ankietową. Ogółem przebadano 1830 dziewcząt i chłopców uczęszczających do siedmiu różnych typów szkół.
