Opis:
Spices and medicinal herbs is an important route for human exposure to toxic metals. This study determined total concentrations of heavy metals and risk assessment of ten types of herbs used in cooking, spices and medicinal plants available in local markets of Babylon province/Iraq. Concentrations of Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb, Co, As, Cd, Cr and Hg were estimated by ICP/Mass to identify toxic metals in the used portion of selected spices and medicinal plants. The average concentrations of these elements were within the limits allowed by the WHO. Culinary herbs and spices contained significantly Cu˃Ni˃Zn˃Pb˃Co˃As˃Cd˃Cr˃Hg. However, the concentrations of copper, zinc and nickel, respectively, were higher in all herbal samples. The study recorded the highest concentrations in the aerial parts of plants from the total elemental content of Thymus vulgaris leaves (109.4 μg•g-1). and barks of Cinnamomum verum was recorded (43 μg•g-1). Non-carcinogenic risks and estimated daily consumption of these herbs were assessed on the basis of the target hazard quotient (THQ) and Hazard Index (HI). THQ values for individual minerals were more than one indicating health risks for nickel (15.5) Mentha verticillata leaves, (12.3) for Matricaria chamomilla, other metals Cu, Co, Pb and Zn were recorded THQ˃1 which considered unsafe for human consumption. The mean Hazard Index (HI) for the nine metal elements is ˃1 for all plants except Zingiber officinale, indicating that there are non-carcinogenic risks from these nine elements. this study provides a scientific basis to guide the safe consumption of certain culinary herbs and spices, it suggest potential health concerns for consumers of these products on a daily basis over a prolonged life span.

This article focuses on issues related to risk assessment when maneuvering a loaded bulk carrier in close proximity to a vessel performing underwater work at the time. It is based on a detailed analysis of an incident that took place in the Gulf of Gdansk. The write-up explains real turns of events, conditions and factors that contributed to the incident, but also its consequences are explained. Some other aspects of this article focuses on, are the processes of examination of the direct causes of the incident and identification not compliance with regulations, requirements, or procedures that help to find out the human, technical, and organizational errors. The authors of this text indicate the safety guards that have failed, give the reasons for their failure and, where it was possible, point out the safety guards that should or must be established. The article does not take into account theoretical models for the described accidents, but only practical aspects, human errors and applicable local and international laws and regulations. Particular attention was devoted to the analysis of human errors made by officers maneuvering the surface vessel in the close vicinity of divers performing underwater works.

This study explains water quality in terms of seven heavy metals in the Upstream Citarum River and analyses human health risk (non-carcinogenic risk) for adults and children. Water samples were collected from five sampling locations along the Upstream Citarum River, i.e. from Majalaya Sub-District to Dayeuhkolot Sub-District. The contents of heavy metals were analysed by the Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS) variant 240 FS. The results of the analysis showed that the pollution index value, which was categorised as slightly polluted from the highest to the lowest value, was as follows: location 4 (4.220) > location 1 (3.764) > location 2 (3.219) > location 5 (2.967) > location 3 (2.800). Values of the hazard index (HI) for adults and children were as follows: Pb > Cr > Cd > Zn > Ni > Co > Cu. Pb and Cr have HI values greater than 1. This indicates that these metals can have a negative impact on public health. The HI in the ingestion pathway was greater than that of the dermal pathway, and the HI value for children was greater than that for adults. Further research is needed regarding the health risks from groundwater around the area which is used directly by the community because river water and groundwater systems are interconnected through streambeds.

Hazard identification and occupational risk assessment, defined as the probability of occurrence of unfavorable work-related events, is one of the areas of activity for employers in relation to current legislation and standards. Using occupational risk assessment it is possible to design and use workstations properly, respecting workers’ health. This article presents an issue related to the use of workstations with laser equipment, which describes the nature of work of lasers and the specific impact of the laser beam on the material. The subject of the analysis is the workstations with a CO2 laser for cutting polymers and a workstation with a fiber laser for marking and engraving. For the above-mentioned workstations, using a designed checklist, the features of lasers are verified, hazards are identified, and occupational risk is estimated using the risk graph method. The estimated risk at selected workplaces with lasers clearly indicated that special attention should be paid not only to the device, and the negative impact of their laser beam on the human body, but also on the treated materials. The article also draws attention to protective measures, which should be applied at laser workstations to ensure the safety of employees.

Opis:
Purpose: The main purpose of the paper is to identify the gap between the risks indicated by managers at the beginning of the pandemic and some selected actual challenges. Design/methodology/approach: The text includes both a literature review and the authors’ own study consisting of two parts. The first one deals directly with how companies manage risk. The study used a descriptive form that was completed by managers in the first half of 2020. The second part of the study was conducted using the CAWI method and concerned the evaluation of remote working from the perspective of employees. The particular value of combining these surveys is the possibility to compare risk management with the actual risk. External reports were also used to comment on the results. Findings: Research findings concerning the risks identified at the beginning of the pandemic and the attempt to assess them through the prism of the opinions of employees who worked under pandemic conditions indicate that technology will be an important aspect of many components of the HR function in the future. Thus, it can be accepted that the technological aspect (including the increasing use of IT at work) should be more widely taken into account by employers in the HR risk management methodologies. It is useful to carry out ex-post analysis in risk management methodologies in order to improve the methods of risk identification. Research limitations/implications: The research results presented and the statements put forward are certainly subject to limitations. As mentioned earlier, many of the indications are region- or sector-specific, and a detailed assessment of risk management must be carried out using case study methods. The conclusions arrived at should therefore be treated in a directional manner. However, this does not change the fact that the pandemic itself is certainly a regional as well as a universal issue and poses similar challenges to all. Practical implications: Pointing to the application aspect of the study results, it is worth noting that COVID-19 effects or market changes are conducive to the creation of new standards in the field of human resources risk and the promotion of sustainable use of human capital. The research methodology can be used to analyse the phenomenon of HR risk in organisations, and the research results can be a valuable contribution to building the mentioned standards in organisations. Social implications: Work on new types of risk should also have a positive impact on human capital construction. Further advances in knowledge in this area will be particularly important as it is estimated that the challenges of work organisation (including remote working) in times of pandemic will stay for long time. Originality/value: This paper addresses the issue of HR risk management in the face of the pandemic and the development of remote working. The research problem being identified is whether the pandemic situation gives rise to new areas of HR risk and whether the experiences of this period should influence the way risk is managed in the future.

Opis:
The paper presents a new approach to the evaluation of human factor (HF) influence on the risk of maritime accidents. This approach is based on a formal human–ship–environment system definition including the relationships between humans, technology, environment, and organization. Social and organizational factors have already been included in the International Maritime Organization regulations; however, the individual factors still need investigation. A combination of psychological studies and technical operations of sea-going ships has given a huge opportunity to use HF assessment in rule-making processes. The main scientific goal of the research presented in the paper was the development of a method to assess the influence of HF on the risk of maneuvering accidents in restricted waters. This method is based on research within the area of technical ship operation and the results of the psychological profile of operators. The proposed model is based on a quantitative HF model developed by an authorized psychologist comprising personality traits, vulnerability to stress, and risk approach. The investigations were carried out with a group of 32 experienced ship masters performing a complex maneuvering task on the Full Mission Ship Handling Simulator. The multidimensional dependencies between variables of the psychological profile and the risk of an accident resulting from maneuvering errors were implemented into the Sugeno fuzzy model. The developed model allows risk assessment to be conducted that depends on the selected personality profile features. These features can be measured using psychological questionnaires, and then the risk of an accident due to maneuvering error can be calculated for a captain or marine pilot in order to improve human resource management.

The paper presents a method for assessing the risk of adverse events related with the work on scaffoldings. The method involves collecting input directly on site, and feeding it into a purpose-built model (ORKWIZ) to determine the level of risk. The model accounts for factors related with legal, social, economic, environmental, organizational, technical and behavioural aspects of work. The method applied to the analysis of a large sample of Polish construction sites with scaffoldings indicated that almost 90% of scaffoldings posed a considerable hazard. The factors that contributed the most to the scale of risk are the environmental factors.

Theoretical background: Incorporating behavioral analysis into finance allows for finding responses to many questions that researchers have not been able to answer by relying on assumptions characteristic of the traditional, normative approach. One of the areas where recently the achievements of behavioral finance have been used to analyze selected problems is public finance. In this article, we use the achievements of psychology, incorporating them into public finance, which allows us to shed new light on decisions made by public managers in Poland. Purpose of the article: The aim of this paper is to present the reasons why local governments do not buy insurance that would protect them against potential losses resulting from the occurrence of a catastrophic event. In this paper, we rely on responses from 303 municipalities, following the premise that an obvious way to learn about motives, constraints, and the decision-making process is to ask decision-makers. Research methods: This paper examines the influence of behavioral determinants and the level of tax revenue per capita on the decisions made by public managers. The CART method was used for this purpose. The necessary empirical data were obtained through a CAWI survey conducted in 2020 between August 1 and September 21 by a consortium of two research agencies: Biostat Research & Development Sp. z o.o. and Biostat Sp. z o.o. Main findings: The analysis conducted in this paper demonstrates that behavioral factors significantly impact public managers' decisions not to purchase catastrophe insurance. Our results confirm the significant role of a decision maker's traits, judgments, views, feelings, and experiences in the decision-making process.

Opis:
Many lives and aircrafts have been lost due to human errors associated with mental workload overload (MWLOL). Human errors are successfully considered in existing Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) methods. However, MWLOL is considered through Performance Shaping Factors indirectly and its information is hidden in FT construction, which is not conducive to analyze the root causes of human errors and risks. To overcome this difficulty, we develop a risk analysis method where Multiple Resources Model (MRM) is incorporated into FTA methods. MRM analyzes mental workload by estimating the resources used during performing concurrent tasks, probably including abnormal situation handling tasks introduced by basic events in FT. Such basic events may cause MWLOL and then trigger corresponding human error events. A MWLOL gate is proposed to describe MWLOL explicitly and add these new relationships to traditional FT. This new method extends previous FTA methods and provides a more in-depth risk analysis. An accident, a helicopter crash in Maryland, is analyzed by the proposed method.

Purpose: Develop a system of automated occupational health and safety management to improve the procedure for minimizing occupational risks and ensure comprehensive protection of employees from the impacts of negative factors of the systems "man - machine - environment". Design/methodology/approach: The following set of scientific methods was used in the study: analysis of normative-legal documents and scientific-technical literature in the field of building and functioning of occupational safety and health management systems, methods of system analysis, simulation methods, namely discrete-event simulation (DES) of random and dynamic processes, methods of decision theory and data mining. Findings: Based on the results of the research, a system of automated occupational health and safety management, which due to the connection the functionally independent elements (according to a certain scheme) allows to provide comprehensive protection of employees from the impacts of negative factors of the system "man - machine - environment" and reduce occupational injuries and diseases, was developed. This is done by constant monitoring and promt correcting of parameters of impact on the employee of the specified factors. The developed system was implemented in the occupational health and safety management system of the industrial enterprise "Stalkanat-Silur" (Odessa, Ukraine), resulting in reducing the number of accidents, in particular, in dangerous areas of production by 33.3%, increasing the economic efficiency of the enterprise through increasing the level of productivity by 5% and reducing in the number of social insurance payments by 11%. Research limitations/implications: The developed system can be implemented both within separate industrial premises and in the enterprise as a whole, but the number of its elements could be changed (increase / decrease) depending on the number of jobs and dangerous areas that need control. Practical implications: The implementation of the proposed system allows to increase the level of economic efficiency of the enterprise by increasing the level of labor productivity due to reducing the negative impact on the employee of harmful factors and compliance with rational mode of work and rest in each workplace, as well as by reducing the number of social insurance payments due to reducing the occupational injuries and diseases. Originality/value: For the first time the system of automated occupational health and safety, which, in contrast to existing automated occupational risk minimization systems and traditional occupational health and safety management systems, provides comprehensive protection of employees from the the impacts negative factors of the system "man - machine-environment", by constant monitoring the parameters of such impact and their prompt correction in case of deviation of the specified parameters from the set criteria, was developed and proposed for use at enterprises, institutions and organizations.

The objective of this study was to analyze the content of heavy metals and arsenic in soil and cereal grains as well as to evaluate the possible human risk in the central region of Peru. The soil samples of corn and barley grains were collected from seven agricultural zones and the concentrations of Cu, Fe, Pb, Zn and As were determined with the method of atomic absorption flame spectrophotometry. PERMANOVA showed that the effect of the type of crop and the sampling zone significantly influence the concentrations of heavy metals and As in soil and corn and barley grains (p < 0.05). PCA for heavy metals and As in soil and grain samples of the cereals studied showed that the first two main components represented 81.03% and 94.77% of the total variance, respectively. Hazard Quotient (HQ) for ingestion was the most significant. The HQ values of Pb and As in crop soils indicated that detrimental health effects are unlikely (HQ < 1). The soil hazard index (HI) values of both crops did not exceed the threshold value of 1 (HI < 1). The carcinogenic risk level (CR) of As from ingestion of corn and barley crop soils contaminated by As was higher in children than in farmers and adults. The bioconcentration factor (BCF) of As was higher in barley grains than in corn grains. The THQ of As exceeded the target value of 1 in 100% of the barley and corn sampling sites. The RC of As in grains exceeded the acceptable risk level of 10–6 in all sampling zones.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to analyze risks in the social sphere and their impact on the development of society in Ukraine. Increasing the impact of risks in the sphere of demography, employment, remuneration, etc. in the context of sustainable development has been determined. The conducted research shows that the risks related to the labor sphere and the health of the population are the most aggressive and dangerous for the safety (as shown by the coronavirus pandemic) because protracted problems in the political, social and economic spheres are accompanied by job losses, economic decline, low wages for more than half of the working population. In view of the ambiguity and uneven economic development of the administrative territorial units of Ukraine it has been determined that education and knowledge can become a factor that can lead to the activation of innovative changes and reduce the negative impact of social threats. For this reason, the most important requirement for the sustainable development of Ukraine is the formulation of a social policy, based on an effective system of methods aimed at preventing risks and reducing probability of their occurrence.

This article is a review of the strategic behavior of companies in human resource management (HRM) area under conditions of uncertainty, based on the example of the COVID-19 pandemic. The spread of COVID-19 has prompted governments to take extreme measures such as closing large social and economic sectors, creating global pressure, and significantly impacting all areas of the economy. Relatively, start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the most affected. A crisis begins when a paradigm does not function properly to explain the phenomena that have occurred. Consequently, other approaches emerge that contribute to a reconsideration of the field. During the crisis, many companies have been placed in a strategically difficult situation, often making hasty decisions that are the result of a lack of any preparation or preventive security of the functioning of all areas of activity. The problem primarily concerns the area of employees, which (according to reports) has been most affected by the pandemic. With each announcement of tightening restrictions, job insecurity and the risk of losing it increased, which translated into a real increase in decisions to lay off employees and a significant reluctance to create new positions and hire new staff. In this article used the method of document analysis like a reports that are the result of quantitative research among entrepreneurs. The aim of the analysis is to juxtapose issues that are a common significant element of strategic management during the crisis in conditions of uncertainty, as well as to propose preventive actions for entrepreneurs. By implementing preventive and protective measures, enterprises can increase the probability of maintaining financial liquidity, as well as help to prepare, through a properly prepared strategy, to operate in new conditions.

Opis:
This research aims to analyze whether Human Resource (HR) disclosure relates to the competitive success that proxied by firms performance and bankruptcy risk. This research uses 400 observations of 234 firms listed in Indonesian Stock Exchange (IDX) from 2014 to 2015. The analysis technique used in this research is Ordinary Least Square Regression analysis model processed with STATA 14.0 software. First, the results show positive associations between HR disclosure and firm performance. Further analysis from subsamples shows that larger firms with higher disclosure on HR are more likely to have better future performance than smaller firms. The next finding shows that firms with higher bankruptcy risk are more likely to have a lower level of HR disclosure. Interestingly, the authors find that firms with high and low bankruptcy risk have opposite disclosure behavior. For the investor, human resource disclosure can be one of the indicators of firms’ characteristics for an investment decision. This study provides new insight into the effect of the firms’ human resource disclosure as we believe there is no prior study that investigates the relationships between future performance and bankruptcy risk, especially in the Indonesian context.
