Opis:
Goat farming is a major livelihood activity for most smallholder farmers in Botswana. To ensure sustainable livelihoods for these farmers, a shift from the prevalent traditional and subsistence system to a more market-oriented one is considered necessary. Market participation is widely viewed as an effective means of addressing poverty which is particularly rampant in most rural areas of Botswana and other developing countries. Little evidence is however available on the link between market participation and household welfare, especially among livestock and, in particular, small stock farmers. This paper evaluates the effect of market participation on household welfare among smallholder goat farmers. Estimating an endogenous switching regression model, the results show a positive and significant effect of market participation on household income for both participant and non-participant farmers. This effect was found to be more pronounced among the non-participants had they decided to sell. The results suggest that goat farmers should be encouraged to engage in market participation other than their traditional ways of keeping goats. This implies that existing policies and programs that increase market participation and encourage market-oriented farming should be revised in order to provide efficient and sustainable support. Furthermore, the study recommends that information on goat markets should reach rural areas where most farmers reside and are unable to access technology.

Opis:
Aim/purpose – This paper attempts to appraise the potential of water resources for Cameroon and the standard of living conditions confronting people in the country. Design/methodology/approach – A simple descriptive method of data analysis is adopted using analytical tools such as percentages, tables, and means to achieve the objectives of the inquiry. Data for the study were generated from personal observations in one hand and collected from water resources literature, on the other hand. Findings – With the help of the data gathered, the paper establishes that despite the existence of abundant water resources in Cameroon the standard of living conditions of people with respect to basic needs of survival such as drinking water, improved sanitation services, and electricity supply is far below expectation. Research implications/limitations – The main implication of the study is that in spite of the surplus volume of water resources (325.96 km3 or 95.12% of annual total water resources) endowment in Cameroon, the population benefits marginally from it due to the mismanagement of resources and misplacement of priorities as obtained in most sub-Saharan African countries. One limitation of this study is that the use of limited primary data in the investigation offers no room toward establishing the extent of water resources allocation to the various users of water in the country. Originality/value/contribution – The paper suggests that the government of Cameroon should encourage the population to run community basic social services projects and subsidize the activities of such ventures in kind through technical assistance or in cash.

Opis:
Fisheries are one of the agricultural sub-sectors that have abundant natural resources and high production value, but that does not make small fishermen prosper. This study aims to determine the level of welfare of capture fishermen households in Pangandaran Sub-district of Pangandaran Regency and the factors that influence it. This study used descriptive basic methods. The research location is in Pangandaran Sub-district of Pangandaran Regency. Sampling takes the accidental sampling method. The data used are primary and secondary data with interview techniques and observations. For the analysis using the Fisher Exchange Rate formula and multiple linear regression analysis. The results showed that the average Term of trade of fishermen in Pangandaran Sub-district was 0.96 or below one (<1). This means that fishermen have not been able to meet household needs and it can be said that fishermen's households are less prosperous. The factors that influence it are the outflow of work time (X2) with the regression coefficient of 0.017 and income (X3) with a regression coefficient of 0.045.
