Most of 378 upper Eifelian crinoid columnals collected from the lower part of Skały Beds in the Holy Cross Mountains display traces of borings produced by endobionts, but only approximately 20% of them show traces of epibionts. These infested crinoids are represented by 5 stem−based species: Tantalocrinus scutellus, Schyschcatocrinus creber, Gilbertsocrinus vetulus, Pentagonostipes petaloides, and Cycloocetocrinussp. They were fouled by 19 species of suspension−feeding epibionts, including saccamminid foraminiferans, rugose and tabulate corals, cyrtinitid and productid brachiopods, “ctenostome bryozoans”, “cyclostome bryozoans”, cystoporate bryozoans, and rhabdomesid? bryozoans, crinoids, and organisms of uncertain affinities. The majority of these epibionts were opportunistic commensals colonizing living crinoids, and only some utilized dead crinoids as hard substrate for attachment. At least some of these epibionts seem to have settled selectively on particular crinoid host species.

Opis:
Colletotrichum truncatum (syn. C. capsici), like many other members of the genus Colletotrichum, displays a highly developed infection mechanism against a number of agriculturally important crops. Among many survival strategies, C. truncatum is well known for its wide host range and high pathogenicity on several major crop species. Meticulous understanding of a pathogen’s infection mechanisms is the best way to achieve successful management of a disease. This study was carried out to evaluate the pathogenicity of C. truncatum on selected crop plants and weed species and to detect the possibility of non-host species to facilitate survival of the pathogen. Inoculation of an isolate of C. truncatum to four crops: curry chilli – Capsicum annuum (var. CA8), eggplant – Solanum melongena (var. Lena Iri), tomato – Solanum lycopersicum (var. Thilina) and green chilli – C. annuum (var. KA2) and three weed species: little ironweed (Vernonia cinerea), billygoat-weed (Ageratum conyzoides) and Bengal dayflower (Commelina benghalensis) resulted in approximately 3.5 disease severity (DS) (100% disease incidence-DI) on S. lycopersicum and C. annuum (var. KA2), followed by 2.8 and 1.8 DS (100%, 75% DI) on C. annuum (var. CA8) and S. melongena (var. Lena Iri), respectively. The three weed species were completely symptomless up to 8 weeks after the inoculation (WAI). However, microscopic studies and serial culturing of the inoculated tissues revealed the presence of the fungus in all the tested plants. Appressoria were present in all treated leaves and eventually broke their dormancy upon leaf senescence nearly 6 WAI. This study reveals the potential of C. truncatum infecting all tested crops and the capability of the three weed species in harboring the pathogen asymptomatically for several weeks. Thus, early management of inoculum in the field is suggested for C. truncatum diseases.

Opis:
Information on species of parasitic helminths native to Poland is provided by the Pasożytnicze helminty Polski. Gatunki. Żywiciele. Białe Plamy [1]. Until the middle of 2007, there were 1205 species of recorded helminths including 126 species of Monogenea, 338 of Trematoda (Digenea), 279 of Cestoda, 427 of Nematoda and 35 of Acanthocephala. They represented 32.9% of the species recorded in Europe (i.e., registered in the Fauna Europaea database). During the following three years up to the middle of 2010, 64 new species of Polish helminths were detected: 7 Monogenea, 15 Trematoda (Digenea), 21 Cestoda, 20 Nematoda and one Acanthocephala. Most hosts of the new helminth species were reported from birds (40 species), but also from fish (13 species) and mammals (10 species). Only one new species of helminth was detected in amphibians.

During 2009–2011, in a faunistic survey of kerman province (Southeast of Iran), the mite fauna of Artemisia (Asteraceae) was investigated. Six species belonging to superfamily tetranychoidea were collected and identified. Artemisia aucheri (Asteraceae) is reported as a new host record for four species Bryobia chrysocomae Meyer, 1974; Strunkobia pamirica Livshitz & Mitrofanov, 1972; Bryobia tuttle is miley & Baker, 1995 and Tetranychus urticae Koch, 1836.
Podczas badań faunistycznych w latach 2009–2011w prowincji Kerman (Południowy Iran), badano faunę roztoczy na roślinach z rodzaju Artemisia (Asteraceae). Stwierdzono sześć gatunków roztoczy należących do nadrodziny tetranychoidea. Odnotowano nowy gatunek żywicielski – Artemisia aucheri (Asteraceae) dla czterech gatunków: Bryobia chrysocomae Meyer, 1974; Strunkobia pamirica Livshitz & Mitrofanow, 1972; B. tuttlei Smiley & Baker, 1995 i Tetranychus urticae Koch, 1836.

Occurrence of nematodes (mostly dominating and common species of Porrocaecum ensicaudatum and P. semiteres) in host populations of birds (Turdus merula, T. philomelos, Sturnus vulgaris and Scolopax rusticola) was summarized in frequency distributions, and tests of agreement with the Poisson model as well as the modified binomial have been computed. Comparisons of the observed frequencies with the expected ones showed the high values (3 - 257) of the coefficient of dispersion, the so-called „overdispersion", characteristic for the negative binomial which is an extension of the Poisson model. A nearly perfect fitness of the counted (observed) with the expected frequencies was found for S. vulgaris both in the analysis of nematode metapopulation and their common species of P. ensicaudatum. Some deviations from the expectations were found for tracing of all nematode species distributions in T. merula, T. philomelos. On the other hand, the same model (negative binomial distribution according to moment method) has fitted quite well to each for common or dominating, nematode species.

Opis:
The increase of Lyme borreliosis (LB) can be expected due to climate change, while the distribution of the disease and annual activity of the vector and host animals depend on several factors of the environment. The presented study aimed to assess expressly the spring season temperature dependence on the incidence of LB in Hungary. The weekly LB data were obtained from the National Epidemiologic and Surveillance System for a period of 13 years – 1998–2010. Daily temperature data were derived from the European Climate Assessment and Dataset. The association was studied at national level, descriptive statistics and linear regression models were applied. A significant increasing trend was observed in the mean temperature of the analysed years (0.052 °C per year). The annual LB incidence doubled during the 13 year period. The incidence rates of the periods 1998–2001 and 2007–2010 were 11.1 resp. 17.0 per 100,000. The start of a steep increase in weekly LB incidence (0.1 per 100,000) shifted significantly by 3 weeks earlier, the start date of spring showed similar trend (p=0.0041). LB incidence increased more steadily in spring than in summer, with 79% of the increase being reported during weeks 15–28, with maximum rates of increase occurring in weeks 23–25. The trend was significant between the weeks 15–28. In the warmer years with 19.02 °C mean temperature in May and June, the LB incidence curve reached the annual peak 2–3 weeks earlier, and the descending phase of the curve started earlier than in the colder years with 17.06 °C of the same period.
