Opis:
Transformations of independent public healthcare centres (SPZOZ) into limited companies was supposed to improve the effectiveness of the healthcare system. Until the 30th April 2014, 174 entities were subject to organisational and legal transformations, while in the years to come the number of entities that operate as companies is going to increase for sure. Considering the importance of the transformation process to the condition of medical entities, NIK has carried out the audit entitled “Activities of self-governmental hospitals transformed into limited companies”. The objective of the audit was to evaluate the impact of transformations on the number and scope of health services financed from the public funds (by the National Health Fund – NFZ), and on the financial situation of these hospitals in the years 2011-2014.

After Poland regained its independence in 1918, Polish people started rebuilding civil hospital network. Bad health conditions of the society and spreading epidemics forced people to undertake the immediate actions. In Bialystok province in the twenties of the twentieth century there were 47 hospitals and among them 18 were epidemic. In following years there appeared the tendency of reducing the amount of hospital institutions. This situation was influenced by the Great Depression in the thirties of the twentieth century. Very often smaller hospitals were merged into one large institution which had several departments with specialized medical staff. The causes of such actions were medical reasons. In the interwar years, in the area of Bialystok province there were also two specialized institutions established. They used innovative ways of treating. It was the Hospital for Mentally and Nervously Ill in Choroszcz and the Public Institute for Nervously Exhausted in Świack.

Purpose: The present study aimed to evaluate mental health and coping strategies among nursing staff in two public hospitals of Greece. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 318 nurses working in two public hospitals in Attica, Greece from February 2017 to May 2017. Data were collected using the Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2), the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire (GAD-2) and the Greek version of the Ways of Coping Questionnaire. The data were presented as mean and standard deviation and analyzed through student tâ“test, chi-square, and descript_ive statistics using SPSS Version 21.0. The significance level was accepted as P values <0.05. Results: Data analysis revealed that 44% of nurses were suffering from depression and 40.3% from anxiety, with the type of hospital (p≤ 0.001) and marital status (p = 0.031) affecting stress levels. Conclusions: Working in mental health hospital and married nurses were the main risk factors for manifestation of anxiety/depression symptoms among nursing staff. Individual nurse characteristics, such as working experience as well as working environment (general and mental health hospital) were found to be associated with the nurses’ coping strategies in their attempt to deal with their work.

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate public hospitals profitability in Poland. The research was carried out on the basis of 67 financial statements and covers the period of time from 2009 to 2011. It has been hypothesized that the profitability of hospitals is systematically deteriorating due to cost pressure and the lack of a significant increase in revenues. In 2009, more than half of hospitals had a net profit and operating profit, while in 2011 only one-third. The average ROA, ROE and EBIT margin and ROS in each year were negative in the research sample. An exception was the average EBITDA margin. However, in hospitals which had an operating profit, ROS and EBIT margin was rather low and achieved approximately a value of 2%.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The main goal of this explorative study is to investigate the public perception of private healthcare providers in Kurdistan region in Iraq. Moreover, the research aims to test the questionnaire and research technique (face-to-face) interviews in terms of their usefulness and adequacy for a further representative survey, which is planned in the upcoming years. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The research problem is to analyze patients’ perception and satisfaction from healthcare services offered by private hospitals in Kurdistan region of Iraq. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: Developing countries have an increasing difficulty in providing cheap and effective healthcare sector for the entire society. In this regard, the autonomous regions like Kurdistan are in a doublydisadvantaged position, as they have to overcome the problems of poor infrastructure, while designing a new health system, at the same time struggling with military conflict with ISIL. RESEARCH RESULT: The research result show surprising gaps in public knowledge about the private hospitals and their healthcare service quality. The study finds, among other, that the easiest way to improve patients’ satisfaction is to improve hygiene and cleaning standards in private hospitals. Although these findings are purely explorative, they should be taken into the account when designing a research project which should produce representative, reliable findings for the entire region. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATION AND RECOMMENDATIONS: As there is no alternative to increase of the role of private providers in Kurdistan region, the regional authorities should monitor the quality of healthcare services offered by both public and private providers to ensure a reasonable standard of healthcare system. Thus, the further studies on healthcare market in Kurdistan should include comparisons between private and public providers.

Opis:
Theoretical background: The COVID-19 pandemic has put a great strain on healthcare systems and hospitals. Although the effects of COVID-19 have affected almost all aspects of the economies and health systems of most countries around the world, relatively little research has been done on the consequences of the pandemic on the financial performance of hospitals around the world. This literature gap is mainly the result of a short research period and difficulties in obtaining reliable and good quality empirical data. The review of the literature shows that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the financial performance of hospitals is ambiguous. Most of them focused primarily on the first year of the pandemic and were mostly based on fragmentary financial data and sometimes only on the case study method.Purpose of the article: The purpose of this article is to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the financial performance of the largest public hospitals owned by local and regional governments. The research, covering mainly the years 2019–2021, was carried out based on financial statements obtained from 40 public hospitals in the form of independent public healthcare institutions (SPZOZ).Research methods: To assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the financial performance of Polish hospitals, a ratio analysis was carried out. Due to the specificity of public health facilities, ratios included in the Ministry of Health Regulation of 12 April 2017 were used, which refer mainly to independent public healthcare facilities.Main findings: The research revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to the deterioration of the financial performance of Polish public hospitals owned by local and regional governments. However, the impact was not dramatic, but only intensified the financial difficulties experienced by Polish hospitals before.

Opis:
The difficult current global situation in the aspect of Human Resources for Health was clearly seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. The spending on healthcare is still increasing and the rate of increase outpaces the growth rate of GDP. Only part of these funds is dedicated to the training of new staff and current healthcare employees migrate in search for better job conditions and worklife balance. Personnel migration combined with the demographic structure in the high-income countries simultaneously leads to increasing demand for healthcare services and limits the supply of specialists who can provide such services. The confrontation between the demand for medical personnel and its supply will lead to a reduction in the quality of care and accessibility of services. In the study based on the large group of Polish county hospitals in 2015–2018, differences and similarities between the hospitals in terms of employment, measured in full-time equivalents (FTEs) and in terms of wages were analyzed. Similarity and dissimilarity analysis was conducted, based on distance measures and cluster analysis. Bigger differences between the hospitals were found for wages than employment levels. The hospitals with an ED and efficient units were less similar to one another than their counterparts in terms of employment (FTEs), except for 2016. When it comes to wages and both types of variables (wages and employment) considered simultaneously, the hospitals with an ED and high number of beds were characterized by lower similarity to one another than their counterparts during the whole period. Clustering all the 3 approaches (FTEs, wages, FTEs and wages) the results were the same. One of these groups was characterized by a rather low employment level per bed, while the other one – by high.

This paper discusses the revalorization of a historical park landscape with therapeutic features of psychiatric hospitals from the second half of the nineteenth and at the beginning of the twentieth century. It presents the history and architectural and landscape values of historical complexes of psychiatric hospitals in Kulparków near Lviv and in Kobierzyn near Cracow. The main features of these park and garden compositions are presented based on historic data and archival sources, the literature, surveys and field research. Despite the passage of time, the preservation of the original park compositions allows one to highlight their primary features and supplement them with harmoniously chosen contemporary elements. As a proposal of contemporary actions, revalorization concepts prepared in recent years developed as part of Master’s thesis projects were presented.

W szpitalach prywatnych natomiast lekarze lepiej rozumieją potrzebę współpracy z menedżerami i z innymi grupami zawodowymi.
This paper surveys the attitudes to managerial roles shown by Polish and British doctors and their evolution over the past decades. The paper is based on a review and analysis of literature, policy documents, healthcare statistic sand semi-structured interviews. Results of this research show that in the past doctors were reluctant to assume managerial roles in the UK system, whereas they were actually keen to do so in the Polish one. Changes in both countries (more market orientation in both countries, UK state policy) changed the doctors’ attitude to management. In the UK, doctors are at the moment more interested in taking on managerial responsibilities, while in Poland they are less interested in doing so in public hospitals due to the financial incentives attached to clinical work. In private hospitals, however, doctors understand the need for collaboration with general managers and other professional groups.

W celu zbadania warunków akustycznych panujących na oddziałach szpitalnych Laboratorium Hałasu i Wibracji Wojewódzkiej Stacji Sanitarno-Epidemiologicznej w Rzeszowie, Oddział Laboratoryjny w Tarnobrzegu wykonało pomiary poziomu dźwięku w wybranych szpitalach powiatowych na terenie województwa podkarpackiego Przebadano 26 sal chorych, w czterech szpitalach, w porze dziennej i porze nocnej. Stwierdzono, ze można zidentyfikować trzy zasadnicze grupy źródeł hałasu. Do pierwszej należy zaliczyć przede wszystkim czynności i komunikację słowną samego personelu medycznego. Druga grupa źródeł z wiązana jest z wyposażeniem technicznym budynków szpitali (windy, klimatyzacja, drzwi do pomieszczeń), a trzecią grupę stanowi infrastruktura otoczenia ( parkingi, drogi).
To gather data on acoustic conditions in wards, sound levels were measured in selected health care facilities in the Podkarpackie voievodeship. In total, 26 wards in 4 hospitals were examined in day and night-time. On this basis, three main groups of noise sources were identified: (a) activities and verbal communication of medical staff in the course of the routine work, and (b) technical equipment of hospital buildings (lifts.air-conditioning, doors) and (c) the surrounding infrastructure (car parts, roads) An acoustic assessment based on tests and the requirements of Standard PN-87/B-02151/02 showed that limit values were exceeded in 58% of the examined wards. In the opinion of the Noise and Vibratron Laboratory in Tarnobrzeg, there are some low- and no-cost organisational and technical ways to improve acoustic conditions in hospital wards.

Abstract: To monasteries and hospitals operating in the Middle Ages in Szczecin the most attention devoted German researchers in the pre-war period. Until the Reformation the city was a strong religious centre. In the 12th century at the St James’ church a Benedictine priory was founded, in the first half of the 13th century to the city arrived the Cistercian nuns and the Franciscans, about 100 years later the Carthusians, and the Carmelites in the 15th century. There were founded two hospitals - St George’s and St Gertrude’s which had their churches and chapels. To our times survived only a small number of early churches remains, a part of the archive materials is lost too.

Opis:
It is commonly thought that breast cancer, like many other cancers, is an illness equivalent to a death sentence. Though this may be true in some cases, the majority of women diagnosed with breast cancer do survive this illness. Breast cancer is a growing illness and is continuing to affect women worldwide, including developing countries like South Africa. Furthermore, this country’s medical system operates in terms of a duality. Here, hospitals and healthcare are mainly situated in either state operated institutions or in privately run practices. This duality emphasizes the inequality within the socio-economic classes, treatment regimens, and ethic-of-care. This article deals with how women from the higher socio-economic stratum of the deeply polarized South Africa deal with breast cancer. The aim is to understand how each participant renegotiates and transforms her self-perception, her identity, and issues around femininity. In addition, the authors also seek to understand if this medical encounter influences the participants’ sense of embodiment, as well as how the medical encounter impacts on their everyday lifeworld.
