The following text can also be treated as a contribution to the history of the Agricultural Society - after all, the agricultural exhibition held at that time in the capital of the Lublin and accompanied by the number of attractions (including the horse races) was the last such event organized under the patronage of the Society.

Opis:: Skład mleka klaczy zmienia się podczas laktacji. Od tych zmian zależą tempo wzrostu i rozwoju źrebiąt, natomiast na zmiany te wpływa wiele czynników, m.in. stan fizjologiczny klaczy. Celem pracy było zbadanie wpływu wieku oraz terminu wystąpienia i długości rui na zawartość magnezu w mleku klaczy. Badania prowadzono na 30 klaczach czystej krwi arabskiej. Stwierdzono, że poziom magnezu obniżał się w ciągu 30-dniowej laktacji, szczególnie w okresie od 4. do 12. dnia po oźrebieniu. W mleku klaczy starszych była istotnie wyższa koncentracja magnezu. Także termin wystąpienia rui oddziaływał na poziom omawianego pierwiastka - klacze z rujami dawały mleko uboższe w magnez. Mleko najzasobniejsze w magnez produkowały klacze, u których ruja trwała średnio 4-7 dni.
Milk composition changes during lactation. The growth rate of foals depends on these changes, which could be connected to the physiological state of the mares. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Arabian mares' age and their heat term and length on the magnesium level in the milk. The research was carried out on 30 Arabian mares. It was confirmed that the magnesium concentration decreased during the 30-days' lactation, especially from the 4th to 12th day after parturition. Older mares produced milk with the significantly higher level of magnesium. Also the heat term influenced Mg concentration - mares with earlier heat produced milk with the lowest magnesium content. Mares which were 4 to 7 days on heat produced milk with the highest level of magnesium.

Opis:: The importance of horse studs owned by the State Treasury is strategic for the biological progress in the agriculture, with regard to farm animals breeding. Therefore, the lack of in-depth knowledge of the functioning of studs, or the application of principles of state assets management, as well as the results of the reconnaissance audit and parliamentary questions which prove that certain irregularities exist as for the procedures related to privatisation of horse studs companies, made the Supreme Audit Office carry out, on its own initiative, an audit entitled Performance of tasks and financial management of horse studs owned by the State Treasury. The audit examined the performance of tasks related to horse breeding, taking account of the financial and economic situation, and the assets management, as well as supervision and control of the functioning of horse studs in the years 2011–2013. The audit was carried out at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Agricultural Property Agency and nine horse studs and three stallion studs.

Opis:: Artykuł stanowi próbę przedstawienia działalności hodowlanej Antoniego Bobrowskiego, ziemianina ze Snopkowa koło Lublina. Za jego czasów (1854–1895) malowniczo położony nad rzeką Ciemięgą majątek zyskał rangę jednego z najbardziej znanych ośrodków zarodowej hodowli koni w Królestwie Polskim oraz centrum specjalistycznego wychowu angielskiej trzody chlewnej. Początkowo Bobrowski zajmował się hodowlą koni użytkowych, by po latach skupić się na karecianych i pod ciężką wagę, chętnie kupowanych w Królestwie Polskim i Rosji. Hodowlę świń angielskich rozpoczął w 1872 roku i osiągnął na tym polu doskonałe wyniki, zyskał bowiem miano pioniera i wybitnego hodowcy, którego sława wyszła poza granice Królestwa Polskiego. Prowadził wzorową działalność hodowlaną, nagradzaną na wielu wystawach, aż do śmierci w 1895 roku. Sądzę więc, że postać Bobrowskiego, zapomnianego współcześnie hodowcy, warta jest przypomnienia szerszemu gronu czytelników.
The article is an attempt to present the breeding activity of Antoni Bobrowski, a landowner from Snopków near Lublin. During his time (1854–1895), the estate, picturesquely located on the river Ciemięga, gained the rank of one of the best-known centers of horse breeding in the Kingdom of Poland as well as a center for specialist rearing of English pigs. Initially, Bobrowski dealt with breeding utility horses, and after years focused on saddle and breeding elite sled horses eagerly bought in the Kingdom of Poland and Russia. He started English pigs breeding in 1872 and achieved excellent results in this field, gaining the name of a pioneer and a distinguished breeder whose fame went beyond the borders of the Kingdom of Poland. He led exemplary breeding activity, awarded at many exhibitions, to death in 1895. So, I think that the figure of Bobrowski, a contemporary forgotten breeder, is worth recalling to a wider group of readers.

Opis:: Przedstawiono czynniki kształtujące warunki środowiskowe w pomieszczeniach inwentarskich dla zwierząt gospodarskich z uwzględnieniem specyfiki chowu i hodowli koni. Paper discussed some factors creating the environmental conditions in the livestock buildings with particular attention to specificity of raising and breeding the horses. Considered factors include: design parameters of the livestock buildings, functionality of buildings and their technical equipment, mechanization of technological procedures, the technology of rearing, the systems of keeping horses, herd management and organization, microclimatic conditions in the rooms and the technological - building conditions referring to horse stables under Polish climatic and agricultural circumstances.

Opis:: Horses have been cherished by people for centuries. Either carriage or horseback rides used to be the favourite pastimes of the nobility, as was the case with the Henckel von Donnersmarck family. The largest stable complexes owned by this family were located in places such as Brynek, Krowiarki, Nakło Śląskie, Siemianowice Śląskie and Świerklaniec. The stable premises of each complex were well suited for horse breeding purposes in terms of both technical functions and space arrangement. Moreover, they were renowned for their designers’ attention to architectural details. Nowadays, differences can be observed in the state of preservation of particular complexes: the stable complex in Brynek seems to be best prepared to serve its present functions. As regards the remaining four locations, action should be taken in order to make them suitable for further use.
Konie są zwierzętami, które od wieków cieszyły się zasłużoną sławą wśród ludzi. Przejażdżki powozem czy też wierzchem należały do ulubionych sposobów spędzania wolnego czasu przez ówczesnych arystokratów. Należała do nich rodzina Henckel von Donnersmarcków. Najsłynniejsze kompleksy stajenne stanowiące nich własność znajdowały się w Brynku, Krowiarkach, Nakle Śląskim, Siemianowicach Śląskich i Świerklańcu. Obiekty, w których hodowano konie, dostosowano do tego celu między innymi pod względem funkcji, a także rozplanowania przestrzennego. Dodatkowo odznaczały się one dbałością o detale architektoniczne. Współcześnie ich stan zachowania jest różny. Najlepiej zaadaptowany do nowych potrzeb jest kompleks w Brynku. Pozostałe zespoły czekają na podjęcie właściwych działań przyczyniających się do ich ponownego użytkowania.

Opis:: The objective of this study was to estimate variance components of Polish Arab horses’ racing performance. The traits studied were the log of annual earnings and rank. Fixed effects of the year of race, herd, sex, the annual number of starts and random animal and permanent environment effects were evaluated on both earnings and rank at finish in Polish Arab horses. The obtained data included 2243 records on 4- and 5-year-old horses by 143 sires. Only races in which 4- and 5-year-olds competed were used. Heritability estimates of earnings and rank at finish were 0.22 and 0.25, respectively. Repeatability estimates of these traits were the same as heritability estimates. All the estimates of genetic and phenotypic correlations between the log of earnings and rank at finish were high and positive. Earnings and rank are good criteria for genetic improvement. Rank seems to be a better measure of racing performance.

Opis:: The objective of this study was to estimate genetic trends in the Polish Arab horses population. Annual earnings and rank at finish in fiat races of Polish Arab horses from 1951 to 1993 were analysed with a BLUP animal model. The collected data included 2,234 records of 1,640 4- and 5-year old horses from 143 sires. Only races, in which horses of at least two mentioned age groups took part, were taken into consideration. The model included an individual additive genetic effect as random, the year of race, herd, sex, age, number of starts and the year of race X age effects as fixed effects. Genetic trends were estimated from differences between horses belonging to different age groups and racing in the same year. The annual genetic gains from 1951 to 1993 were 3.5% and 12.3% of the genetic standard deviation for the log of earnings and rank at finish, respectively. Although the main role in breeding Arab horses is played by beauty and exterior, small genetic progress in the log of earnings and rank at finish was obtained.

Opis:: The length of gestation in Carthusian broodmares was calculated on the basis of 339 spontaneous full-term deliveries taking place in the 8-year period 1998-2005 from 158 broodmares and 29 stallions in a major farm of Spanish horses of Carthusian strain in southern Spain. Ultrasonography was used to determine follicular dehiscence, 1st day of pregnancy and to confirm conception in mares. Mean GL was 332.4 ± 12.1 days, and a normal interval of 297-358 days was established for this breed. GL records were grouped on the basis of foal sex (colts or fillies), mating month (between November and January; February and April; May and July), age of the mare (4 to 7 years; 8 to 12 years; 13 to 17 years), breeding year, stallion and parity (primiparous vs. multiparous). GLs were 12.9 days shorter in mares mated between May and July than those mated between November and January and 15.3 days in mares mated between February and April (p<0.001). Mares aged between 8-12 years had 5.3 days shorter GLs than those aged between 13-17 years (p<0.05). Pregnancy was significantly 5.7 days longer when the mare gave birth to colts than fillies (p<0.05). GL was 14.5 days longer in primiparous than in multiparous mares (p<0.001). No statistical differences in GL were found between the studied years. This study shows the influence of certain stallion on GL.
