Opis:
The process of forest fragmentation has been observed in many countries, where plant species had adapt to different habitats, such as for example manor parks and rural plantings. A number of scientists have studied the parks as sites where waning environments and landscapes find their shelter. In 2011–2012, research was undertaken on diversity of vegetation in afforestations of parks, rural plantings and oak-hornbeam forests in Sandomierz Basin. In order to compare the means obtained univariate analysis of variance (one-way ANOVA) was used with juxtaposing divided by each of the two criteria: size (the small, and large parks) and conservation(cultivated parks and nonclutivated parks). Tukey’s test was used to examine the significance of differences between respective groups. Analyses were with STATISTICA 9.1. software. Plants classified as forest species, grassland species and those of synanthropic communities were observed in all the afforestations. The parks with high wooded and not mowed areas and oak-hornbeam forests were more forest-like than other types of afforestations studied.

The “Jamno” nature reserve was established to protect the forest community with European silver fir Abies alba Mill. on the northern border of natural occurrence of this tree species in Poland. The results of current phytosociological studies (done in 2011) show that the oak-hornbeam forest – Tilio-Carpinetum calamagrostietosum association with Abies alba, exist within reserve. The present structure and species composition of studied community is determined by spontaneous changes of tree stand. The different proportion of silver fir in shrub and tree stand layers indicate the dynamic changes within this species population.

Opis:
The aim of the studies carried out in the natural oak-hornbeam forest Tilio-Carpinetum typicum and in the degenerated form in the stage of pinetization Pinus-Lamniastrum, was to obtain and compare qualitative-quantitative structures of soil fungi communities in two different oak-hornbeam forests. This degenerated form of oak-hornbeam forest is the result of removing the natural tree population (typical oak-hornbeam forest) and re-afforesting the resultant vacant area with pines. The study plots were located in such a way that the variations of soil fungi communities were affected only by seasonal changes in the vegetation of the degenerated oak-hornbeam forest Pinus-Lamnias- trum. The soils in both study plots are typical forest grey-brown podzolic soils (Luvisols). The results of mycoiogical studies indicate significant differences between soil fungi communities in both oak-hornbeam forests, although similarities especially in species composition of 15 of the most abundant fungi species were also found. The differences are the result of changes in the floral composition of degenerated oak-hornbeam forest. In the past, when typical oak-hornbeam forest covered whole studied areas, the soil fungi communities were probably almost the same in both plots. The first change could have happened after the removal of the trees; the second, after the re-afforestation of the resulting vacant area with pines. The re-appearance of Tilio-Carpinetum typicum in its once occupied habitat causes changes in the soil fungi community in the degenerated oak-hornbeam forest.

This study investigated the extend to which the snail Columella edentula is more strongly associated with the small balsam Impatiens parviflora than with other plants in the herb layer of an oak-hornbeam forest, and to interpret the character of the interaction Impatiens parviflora - Columella edentula. Numbers of C. edentula and rates of colonization were compared on various plant species under natural and laboratory conditions. Seasonal variation in snail abundance on I. parviflora was observed on permanent plots. The leaf injuries caused by C. edentula were localized in respect of the morphological and anatomical structure of leaves. The results show that I. parviflora is one of the plant species of the herb layer that are most abundantly colonized by this snail in oak-hornbeam forest. Snail finds a plant particularly suitable as a place for resting. The most favoured attachment site is on the underside of the leaf, along the midrib, which provides the highest and relatively stable humidity, as well as protection from direct sunlight and predators. I. parviflora is also a food for the snails, but they do not eat these fragments of leaves where calcium carbonate is accumulated.

The paper presents the river valley physiography and the selected hydraulic, physics and chemical parameters of the upper section of small lowland river – Pichna Szadkowicka (the Warta river catchment, Central Poland). The strong relationship between the river and river valley habitat’s characteristics and the plant species and vegetation diversity was noted. Around one hundred (93) of vascular plant species was noted in total, including Listera ovata (strictly protected) and partially protected: Hedera helix, Viburnum opulus, Frangula alnus and Hepatica nobilis. The high natural (botanical) and landscape values of the researched section of the Pichna Szadkowicka river with adjacent parts of Wojsławice forest complex justify additionally their protection in the network of forests reference plots and of the High Conservation Value Forests (HCFV).

Opis:
Forest seed banks mostly studied in managed forests proved to be small, species poor and not reflecting aboveground species composition. Yet studies conducted in undisturbed communities indicate a different seed bank characteristic. Therefore we aimed at describing soil seed bank in an undisturbed forest in a remnant of European lowland temperate forests, the Białowieża Forest. We compared similarity between the herb layer and seed bank, similarity of seed bank between different patches, and dominance structure of species in the herb layer and in the seed bank of two related oak-hornbeam communities. We report relatively high values of Sorensen species similarity index between herb layer and seed bank of both patches. This suggests higher species similarity of the herb layer and soil seed bank in natural, unmanaged forests represented by both plots than in fragmented communities influenced by man. Although there was a set of core seed bank species present at both plots, yielding high Sorensen species similarity index values, considerable differences between plots in seed bank size and dominance structure of species were found, indicating spatial variability of studied seed bank generated by edaphic conditions. Dominance structure of species in the herb layer was not reflected in the underlying seed bank. This stresses, that natural forest regeneration cannot rely only on the seed bank, although some forest species are capable of forming soil seed banks. While forest seed banks may not reflect vegetation composition of past successional stages, they may inform on history and land use of a specific plot.

The article presents a hypothetical history of a stand and the occurring changes resulting from the on−going regeneration processes in the Tilio−Carpinetum hornbeam community following the past forms of forest utilisation. The anthropogenic destruction of stands took place most probably at the end of the 18th century. The regeneration process started at the beginning of the 19th century had led to the appearance of a spruce stand which disappeared in the middle of the 20th century. A lime−spruce−hornbeam stand was formed in its place. Since over 70 years, the regeneration process has been continuing under strict protection regime.

The aim of the present study was to determine how internal diversity of oak-hornbeam forest modifies the course and effects of infestation of small-flowered balsam (Impatiens parviflora) with rust Puccinia komarovii. The study investigated the effect of the disease on the demography of the population, and the habit and biomass allocation of the infested specimens, as well as the initiation of non-specific defense mechanisms. It was shown that: 1) the percentage of infected specimens was independent of the undergrowth-coverage rate and of the I. parviflora density; 2) infected populations differ from healthy ones in the seasonal dynamics of abundance changes; 3) high mortality is observed as early as May and the first part of June, i.e. it pertains to specimens, which did not begin reproduction; 4) the presence of infection and its intensity stimulate the growth of the stem and the hypocotyl; 5) fresh weight of infected specimens is by almost 30% lower in comparison to the weight of uninfected plants; the weight of badly infected plants decreases by 20% in comparison to the less severely infected balsam plants; the weight of generative organs drops most significantly, even by over 50%; 6) biomass allocation does not fluctuate considerably; 7) reproduction effort expressed by the ratio of the weight of fruits (or only seeds) to the total biomass shows a distinct downward trend; 8) the environmental factor does not affect the force of defense mechanisms, the strength of biochemical response of diseased plants depends on the degree of their infestation.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to compare the seven tree species in terms of their role in the formation of a complex vertical structure in mixed broadleaved stands. The data came from 18 multi−storey old−growth forests representing different communities of lowland deciduous forests in the Niepołomice Forest. In each stand, squared sample plot (80×80 m) was established. The height of trees of dbh≥7 cm was measured. Then, for each studied species, values of the two structural indices were determined. The structural diversity index (ZS) quantifies tree height variation within individual population, whereas the index of structure−forming role (RS) expresses the contribution of the given population into vertical structural diversity of the whole stand. The greatest tendency to form a population with a large height diversity belonged to Tilia cordata, Fraxinus excelsior and Ulmus laevis. Significant opportunities in this regard, however, were exhibited by other tree species, including shade−intolerant Pinus sylvestris and Alnus glutinosa. This phenomenon in the conditions of eutrophic habitats, with the constantly present competitive pressure from shade−tolerant species, should be considered as an exceptional. A major contribution to vertical structural diversity of the stand was often an attribute of the populations with a low internal height diversity, which concerned especially Quercus robur. This means that an important ecological mechanism responsible for the formation of a multi−layer canopy is complementary filling the space above ground by trees of the species with different light requirements. However, the lack of correlation between RS and ZS indices suggests that the ability of particular species to form the population with a high internal diversity is equally important. The results prove the possibility of forming stands with a very complex vertical structure in the conditions of lowland mixed deciduous forests. However, in terms of sustainable maintenance of such stand structure, the issue of the growth rate of trees at different competitive pressure and the nature of their response to the release at different stages of ontogeny remains open.

The paper presents vegetation changes of Górki nature reserve in terms of their impact on the main subject of conservation – twinflower Linnaea borealis. The research was conducted between 1969 and 1974 and during this investigation a mixed forest Pino−Quercetum was noted. After 50 years of strict protection the studies were repeated to describe the reserve's flora and vegetation dynamics. A considerable decrease in number is particularly observed in species belonging to Vaccinio−Piceetea class. The main subject of conservation withdrew. Nowadays, vegetation evolved into an oak−hornbeam forest Tilio−Carpinetum betuli. Statistically relevant changes have also been noted as regards the soil acidity and the trophic status of the nature reserve's flora, based on ecological indicators.

The aim of this study was to determine the mutual effect of small balsam (Impatiens parviflora) and other elements of phytocoenosis on their position in the community. In the oak−hornbeam forest of the Wielkopolski National Park, Ficaria verna, Carpinus betulus self−seedlings, Vaccinium myrtillus, Galium odoratum, Pteridium aquilinum and tuft grasses were found to have locally strong inhibitory effect on small balsam growth. The effects of the interaction between Impatiens parviflora and other plants of the herbaceous layer depended not only on plant competitiveness but also on how long was the period of their co−occurrence during the growing season (i.e. on species phenology) and local differences of habitat conditions. Wherever Impatiens parviflora was a dominant species the interspecies competitive pressure (w) and species diversity H' of the herbaceous layer were highest.

The purpose of this paper was to describe processes that took place in the Łowicz-Błonia plain during the long-term drought of 2018 and the series of short-term droughts in 2019. For our analysis we used multispectral satellite images of high- ground hornbeam and mixed coniferous forest in the Młochowski Forest from 2017–2021. Sentinel-2 images provided the means to investigate the impact of mild droughts on the values of the NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), NDWI (Normalized Difference Water Index), and MSI (Moisture Stress Index) as well as their monthly variability and differences between forest divisions. During periods without drought, the variability of all three indices was typical for each phase of the vegetation cycle: in the spring months the value of NDVI and MSI increased, NDWI decreased. During the autumn months, the behavior of the indicators reversed. In the period of long-term drought in 2018, the NDWI was higher in forest divisions with aspecies composition characteristic of a mixed coniferous forest compared to divisions with a higher share of deciduous trees such as oaks and hornbeams, including the rigorously protected area of high–hornbeam forest. NDWI was the only index to show a downward trend during mild droughts, while during moderate droughts, also a decrease in NDVI and MSI was observed. This was most clearly seen in deciduous forests. We did not observed any correlation of NDVI, NDWI, or MSI with the protection status of the forest or the absence thereof

The characteristics of the pigments’ biosynthesis were determined in terms of plant species, vegetation period and growth conditions (under canopy cover and out in the open). The gathered data on the changes of the pigment complex with respect to the examined variables confirms the sensitivity of plastid pigment biosynthesis to environmental factors.
