Opis:
The aim of this study was to identify and quantify lignin transported from the River Vistula to the accumulation area in the Gdańsk Basin. Sediment samples collected along the Vistula mouth –Gdańsk Deep transect were analysed for lignin. Lignin was characterised by oxidative degradation, cupric oxide being chosen as the most suitable oxidising agent. The polar functional groups of the oxidation products were silylated and the derivatives analysed by capillary gas chromatography on fused capillary silica columns with flame ionisation detection. Lignin-derived oxidation products were quantified in the range from 3 to 20 μg g−1 dry wt. for phenolic acids and from 6 to 12 μg g−1 dry wt. for phenolic aldehydes. Differences in oxidation products contents are assigned to different lignin sources in the marine environment. The horizontal and vertical gradients of these compounds in the sediments of the Gdańsk Basin are documented. The results are discussed in terms of the origin and fate of organic matter in the Gdańsk Basin. The measured differences in quality and quantity of the identified oxidation products provide insight into diagenetic processes in the surface marine sediments.

Opis:
Wind, flow and wave measurements were performed in November–December in 2008 in the relatively narrow and shallow Suur Strait connecting the waters of the V¨ainameri and the Gulf of Riga. During the measurement period wind conditions were extremely variable, including a severe storm on 23 November. The flow speed along the strait varied between ±0.2 m s−1, except for the 0.4 m s−1 that occurred after the storm as a result of the sea level gradient. The mean and maximum significant wave heights were 0.53 m and 1.6 m respectively. Because of their longer fetch, southerly winds generated higher waves in the strait than winds from the north. All wave events caused by the stronger southerly winds induced sediment resuspension, whereas the current-induced shear velocity slightly exceeded the critical value for resuspension only when the current speed was 0.4 m s−1. A triplenested two-dimensional high resolution (100 m in the Suur Strait) circulation model and the SWAN wave model were used to simulate water exchange in 2008 and the wave-induced shear velocity field in the Suur Strait respectively. Circulation model simulations demonstrated that water exchange was highly variable, that cumulative transport followed an evident seasonal cycle, and that there was an gross annual outflow of 23 km3 from the Gulf of Riga. The horizontal distribution of waveinduced shear velocity during the strong southerly wind event indicated large shear velocities and substantial horizontal variability. The shear velocities were less than the critical value for resuspension in the deep area of the Suur Strait.

Opis:
In this study, we tried to understand the horizontal bearing performances of step-tapered piles using numerical simulations. The influence of the geometric parameters, e.g. the diameter (D) and the distance (L), and the length (H) of the pile were considered, and the soil distribution imposed on the horizontal bearing capacity of the piles was simulated. Numerical results show that when the other geometrical parameters of step-tapered piles are kept unchanged: (a) the increasing diameter (D) of the enlarged upper part of step-tapered piles improves the horizontal ultimate bearing capacity of step-tapered piles; (b) reduced distance (L) improves the horizontal ultimate bearing capacity of the step-tapered piles; (c) Increasing length (H) of the enlarged upper part of steptapered piles increases the horizontal ultimate bearing capacity; (d) the reduced length (H) decreases the bending moment of the pile body. Higher soil strength surrounding the enlarged upper part of step-tapered piles can increase the horizontal ultimate bearing capacity of step-tapered piles. The change of soil strengths at the end of the step-tapered piles does not influence the horizontal ultimate bearing capacity of step-tapered piles.

Opis:
The article is devoted to temperature changes in the ground massif with the horizontal heat exchanger as an energy source for a heat pump. The article was aimed at analyzing temperature changes in the ground massif with the horizontal heat exchanger at the beginning, in the course of and at the end of the heating season. Another aim was to analyze temperature differences in the area of the horizontal exchanger and the reference lot. The heat flow utilized in the evaporator of heat pump was extracted from the ground exchanger (nominal output at the condenser was 10.5 kW). Temperatures of the ground massif with the horizontal heat exchanger were measured in its plane in depths of 0.75 m, 0.5 m and 0.25 m. The temperature inside the ground massif on the reference lot and ambient parameters were measured as well. It is obvious that the difference of energetic potentials inside the ground massif with the heat exchanger and on the reference lot is insignificant at the beginning of the heating season. During the heating season, the difference of ground massif energetic potentials increases; at the end it is constant. The difference of temperatures in horizontal planes was not significant at the beginning of the heating season; however, it gradually increased. Maximum differences were detected in the area of the heat exchanger. In higher strata, the difference between temperatures decreases. During a major part of the heating season, temperatures at pipes of the ground exchanger were negative. This fact affected amounts of heat extracted from the ground massif.

Opis:
The paper deals with assessment of thermal fields and temperature changes in ground massif with horizontal heat exchanger used as a heat source for a heat pump. Temperatures in the zone of the horizontal ground exchanger are compared with temperatures in a reference land. Changes of heat potential of the soil during the heating period are also assessed. Possibilities of recovery of thermal potential of the ground massif when utilizing vertical and horizontal exchangers are analyzed in the opening part of the paper. The results of the first verification indicated that average temperatures in the horizontal planes of the ground massif did not differ considerably with distance from the exchanger tube. Differences in average temperatures in reference and experimental lands confirmed sufficient heat potential of the ground massif even at the peak of the heating period. The differences in average temperatures reached up to 6.51 K in the end of the heating period while at the beginning of the heating period, the differences in average temperatures dropped to 1.35 K. The differences between maximum and minimum temperatures in the zone of the ground exchanger reached up to 1.9 K at the peak of the heating period and rose to 3.9 K at the beginning and end of the heating period. The first results of our measurements indicate the necessity of accumulation of thermal energy in the soil massif in the summer period like in case of the vertical exchangers.
