The main objective of the study is to show the specifics and features of the social phenomenon of divorce in medieval Moldavia. Divorce was known in all civilizations, however, in the context of European history, both common and specific features were observed in the Principality of Moldavia. The study of documentary historical, legal and act material of the era, notes and information of Catholic missionaries shows that in the Principality of Moldavia not only men, but also women had the right to divorce and remarry. Moldavian women could and had the right to initiate a divorce.

In its principles, the Third Republic was based on the Enlightenment and the French Revolution legacy. In practice, it was confronted to many paradoxes already identified by women’s history. But one of them still remains: exactly at the same time that philosophy was considered as the most republican practice, based on universal concepts, the Ministry of Education banned the teaching of philosophy for women. This article brings elements to build a history of women philosophers during the Third Republic, years before Simone de Beauvoir success, and reminds the existence of the fight for the right to philosophize as men.

The text outlines the efforts of Polish women to be given access to academic education and, in consequence, scholarly career culminating in at least a post-doctoral degree. The author also presents data reflecting the number of women on the territory of Poland who obtained successive scientific degrees/titles, starting with doctorate, through a post-doctoral degree to full professors. To illustrate the data, the author cites specific examples of successful female careers in humanities and sciences. The timeframe spans the period from the turn of the 20th century to 1939.

Ukazuje związki i zależności między modą a warunkami społecznymi, gospodarczymi i ekonomicznymi kraju. Prezentuje także polską modę na tle mody zachodnich projektantów badanego okresu.
The article was based on the analysis of texts devoted to fashion, published in the weekly “Zwierciadło” in the years 1957–1989. It shows the relationships and dependencies between fashion and the social and economic conditions of the country. It also presents Polish fashion against the background of the fashion of Western designers of the analyzed period.

Issues related to women’s history and feminism occupied a central place in Maria Bogucka’s research. It is not without significance that her work in this area corresponds to the dynamic development of research on the history of women in Western Europe and the United States. Women, often overlooked in historical research, represented important heroines not only as queens or saints, but also as characters whose group portrait was essentially worth recreating. Maria Bogucka looked to address women’s (and feminist) issues in biographies, monographs, articles and essays. To this end, she introduced the findings of foreign researchers into Polish historiography, and emphasised the specificity of the situation of women in Poland over the centuries.

Czy naprawdę dokonał się awans kobiet w socjalizmie? Aby odpowiedzieć na to pytanie, warto przyjrzeć się, jakie prace z tego zakresu powstały wówczas w socjologii. Zwartych monografii, rezultatów prac empirycznych było mało. Uderza ograniczony katalog tematów, takich jak: przemiany rodziny w warunkach industrializacji i urbanizacji, pozycja zawodowa kobiet a rodzina, procesy laicyzacji rodziny, modele rodziny w środowisku robotniczym, rodziny w Polsce Ludowej, rodzina wielkomiejska, współczesna rodzina, kobieta – dom – praca oraz oczywiście dominujący motyw pracy zawodowej kobiet. Opracowania te zupełnie nie oddają głosu samym kobietom. Ukierunkowana analiza tych całkiem niedawno powstałych historii mówionych kobiet żyjących w Polsce w komunizmie oraz wywiadów własnych uzyskanych w trakcie realizacji omawianego projektu stanowiła główny problem badawczy projektu: „Odbudować przeszłość, aby uzyskać przyszłość. Narracje kobiet o życiu w komunizmie”. Dylematy metodologiczne, które wynikały z interdyscyplinarności zespołu realizującego ten projekt, stanowiły dominujący wątek zaprezentowanego artykułu. Głównym jego wnioskiem jest to, że postulat pracy w interdyscyplinarnym zespole jest bardzo na czasie. Zarazem realizacja projektów historii społecznej kobiet może dokonywać się według różnych paradygmatów, które czasami stoją wobec siebie w opozycji. Umiejętność elastycznego ich łączenia stanowi o sile takich projektów, jak i o ich wynikach.
Did women’s promotion in socialism really happen? To answer this question, it is worth looking at what works in this field were created then in sociology. There were few compact monographs and results of empirical work. There is a limited catalog of topics such as: family transformation in the conditions of industrialization and urbanization, professional position of women and the family, processes of secularization of the family, family models in the workers’ milieu, families in People’s Poland, urban family, modern family, woman-home-work and obviously dominant motif of women’s professional work. These studies do not give voice to women themselves. A focused analysis of these quite recent stories of spoken women living in Poland under communism, as well as personal interviews obtained during the implementation of this project, was the main research problem of the project: Regaininh the future by rebuilding the past. Narratives of women living in communism. Methodological dilemmas that resulted from the interdisciplinary nature of the team implementing this project constituted the dominant theme of the presented article. His main conclusion is that the postulate of working in an interdisciplinary team is very timely. At the same time, women’s social history projects can be implemented according to various paradigms that sometimes stand in opposition to each other. The ability to combine them flexibly determines the strength of such projects as well as their results.

This article is an attempt to bridge the gap existing in the current scientific reflection. Unlike in the United States and Western Europe, in Poland and other countries of the region no comprehensive reflection on the historical condition of women in science, their contribution to the development of individual disciplines, or individual mechanisms that affect the course of women’s careers etc. has been undertaken. The author presents the struggles of Polish women fighting for access to higher education, outlines the obstacles that had had to be overcome before the university doors were finally opened to female-scholars (which only happened at the end of the nineteenth century). Next, the first scientific achievements of female humanists were presented in the field of history. The experience of Polish female historians could be generalized. Their careers reflected the experiences of other women in science from Central and Eastern Europe in the nineteenth and twentieth century. The text consists of three parts; an introductory part shows women’s struggle for higher education. A second is dedicated to women – pioneers of scientific autonomy in the field of Polish history. The author presents the problem in chronological order including two epochs: the interwar period and the period of so-called real socialism. The third part contains conclusions and refers to the contemporary situation in Polish science.
Artykuł stanowi próbę uzupełnienia luki w polskiej refleksji naukowej. W przeciwieństwie do Stanów Zjednoczonych i Europy Zachodniej w Polsce i innych krajach regionu brak kompleksowego historycznego namysłu nad kondycją kobiet w nauce, ich wkładem w rozwój poszczególnych dyscyplin lub indywidualnych mechanizmów wpływających na przebieg akademickiej kariery kobiet itp. Autorka w sposób syntetyczny zarysowuje zmagania Polek walczących o dostęp do szkolnictwa wyższego; wskazuje przeszkody, które musiały zostać pokonane, zanim drzwi akademii zostały otwarte dla kobiet-uczonych (co miało miejsce w Galicji w 1897 r.). Następnie zaprezentowane zostały losy oraz pierwsze osiągnięcia naukowe humanistek na przykładzie nauki historycznej. Doświadczenia polskich historyczek można uogólnić. Ich kariery odzwierciedlały bowiem to, co było udziałem kobiet w nauce krajów Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej w XIX i XX wieku. Tekst składa się z trzech części. W partii wprowadzającej autorka pokazuje walkę kobiet o dostęp do szkolnictwa wyższego. Część zasadnicza poświęcona została kobietom – pionierkom naukowej autonomii w dziedzinie historii. Przedstawia problem w porządku chronologicznym obejmującym dwie epoki: okres międzywojenny i czasy PRL-u. Trzecia część zawiera wnioski i odnosi się do współczesnej sytuacji kobiet w polskiej nauce.

Cinema in Memories of Women Viewers from Kraków. Oral History as a Methodology of Cinema and SpectatorshipThe main issue of the text is to examine several different methods of studies of women as spectators. The most accurate methodology seems to be a paradigm of oral history, combining methods of history, ethnological studies and sociology. The idea of research on women’s spectatorship is based on interpersonal contacts and interviews with women who have either knowledge or experience of film culture. There were several interviews that had taken place before writing the article, and each of them was given by a women living in Kraków for years. The collected material provided an interesting approach to the history of women as viewers and participants of film culture.

The text attempts to present how the Great War’s impact on emancipation processes and changes in the relationship between the genders were seen in the women’s press. An analysis was conducted of the series of articles by Cecylia Walewska entitled ‘The differentiation of the female type after the war’, published in the weekly Bluszcz in 1927; the series has been confronted with other voices appearing in the interwar press and with the realities of life at that time.

W artykule podjęto rozważania dotyczące wybranych metafor obecnych w feministycznych projektach historycznoliterackich. Autorka szkicu sformułowała pytania o znaczenia i – krytyczne, opisowe – możliwości związane z metaforyką fali, lądu i marginesu. W przypadku opisu literatury kobiet pytania te wyznaczają nie tylko podstawowe dylematy wynikające z prób konceptualizacji literatury kobiet w szerszych, syntetyzujących perspektywach, ale także pozwalają na wskazanie najważniejszych sposobów ujęć kobiecego pisarstwa w jego relacjach ze społeczno-politycznymi przemianami, pisarskimi i badawczymi biografiami, kanonem.
This article takes up a consideration of certain metaphors present in feminist projects of literary history. The essay’s author formulates questions about the meanings and critical and descriptive potential of the metaphors of the wave, the land, and the margin. In the case of describing women’s literature, these questions  highlight not only the fundamental dilemmas resulting from attempts to conceptualize women’s literature in broader comparative perspectives, but they also allow us to identify the most important means for grasping women’s writing in terms of its relation with sociopolitical  transformations, academic and literary biographies, and the canon.

Critical studies on the theatre from the 19 th and 20 th centuries, even founding ones, are limited as they do not include a gender category – a paradox in a space where bodies are central. The actresses, in fact, give life to different stories, which allow for the enrichment of historical-critical reconstructions. Given the vastness of the topic, this article aims to identify some fundamental turning points. We begin with the legacy of the 19 th century, rich from both a linguistic and a historical-critical viewpoint; the article moves on to the post-Duse period, which saw, on the one hand, the birth of the actor-artist’s Italian specificity and, on the other, the crisis of female leaders of theatre companies; then, the article discusses the birth of Italian theatre direction in the period following the Second World War and the reaction of a few actresses, like Anna Magnani, who aimed to re-create the reality that was to be reclaimed by the history of theatre. Finally, the article explores the breakdown caused by the New Theatre and even calls into discussion the word for “actress”, with overlaps in the fields of theatre direction and dramaturgy.
Gli studi critici sul teatro dell’ 800 e del 900, anche quelli fondativi, hanno il limite di non usare la categoria di gender: un paradosso in un ambito in cui il corpo è centrale. Le attrici infatti danno vita a storie diverse, che permettono di arricchire le ricostruzioni storico-critiche. Data l’ampiezza del tema, il saggio punta sull’individuazione di alcuni snodi fondamentali: il lascito ottocentesco, ricco sia dal punto di vista del linguaggio che da quello socio-culturale; il dopo-Duse, che registra da un lato la nascita della specificità italiana dell’attore-artista e, dall’altro, la crisi del capocomicato femminile; la nascita della regia italiana nel secondo dopoguerra e la reazione di alcune attrici che puntano sulla ri-creazione della realtà, come Anna Magnani, che va riconquistata alla storia del teatro; la rottura operata dal Nuovo teatro e la messa in discussione sin della parola attrice, con sconfinamenti nei campi della regia e della drammaturgia.

The article discusses the latest trends in research on women’s history in Poland. Attention is drawn to the increasing number of biographies, and an attempt is made to answer the question of whether and in what direction this type of writing is changing our perception of women’s roles in Polish history. The article discusses the autobiographical literature written by women, whose publications reflect a growing interest in individual history and are a response to the demand to give a voice to previously unheard groups. It raises questions about the role of memoirs in describing past societies and gender order. The role of oral history methods in gaining insight into the past of women and society is also discussed.

Niniejszy artykuł jest próbą ukazania najważniejszych trudności w badaniach prowadzonych nad historią kobiet w późnej starożytności i Bizancjum. Wskazuje najistotniejsze różnice w tego typu badaniach dotyczących różnych epok historycznych. Największym problemem w badaniach kobiecych w epokach przed-nowożytnych jest charakter źródeł, których autorkami w niewielkim jedynie zakresie były kobiety, w dodatku przede wszystkim kobiety wywodzące się z elit. Zazwyczaj na świat kobiet w tych czasach patrzymy przez pryzmat autorów, którzy byli mężczyznami, najczęściej również pochodzącymi z elit. Dlatego aby badać dzieje kobiet w antyku i Bizancjum, trzeba przede wszystkim wykorzystywać metodologię charakterystyczną dla studiów klasycznych, umiejętnie łącząc ją z metodologią wypracowaną dla zgłębiania historii kobiet.
The present article aims to show the most important difficulties connected with the research on the history of women in Late Antiquity and Byzantium. It also points to the significant differences that exist in such studies as relating to various historical periods. The major problem occurring in the women’s studies focused on pre-modern periods is the nature of the sources as represented by only a very limited number of female authors (most of whom would represent the elite circles of society). Most often, the world of women in that period is depicted from the perspective of male authors, usually members of the upper classes themselves. For this reason, the study of the history of women in Antiquity and in the Byzantine period should require the use of the methodology specific to classical studies with the reliance on the applicable methods elaborated for the purposes of women’s studies.
