India’s rejection of Macmillan’s English Classics series constitutes an important counter-origin that exposes and dismantles underlying assumptions about how colonial Indian readers valued and consumed Shakespeare. In this paper, I examine the failure of Macmillan’s English Classics series to bring about Indian assimilation to British values. I specifically consider Kenneth Deighton’s Shakespeare editions in the series and argue that Deighton’s Shakespeare attempted to utilize its extensive explanatory notes as a primer on Englishness for Indians. The pedantic notes, as well as the manner in which the texts were appropriated into Indian educational systems, were determining factors in their ultimate failure to gain widespread popularity in the colony. The imperial agenda that insists upon one dominant, valid discourse led to Macmillan misreading the market and misreading an already viable field of Shakespeare studies in India. Reflecting on narratives and histories surrounding the origins of Shakespeare studies in India, as well as how Shakespeare’s works were produced for the colonies and the way in which they were duly rejected, reveals how exchanges of power and capital between metropole and colony shape Western systems just as heavily as they do others.

This article is dedicated to the study of the history of the Cyrillic Four Gospels BJ 941 from the manuscript section of the Department of Special Collections of the Jagiellonian Library in Krakow. The study defines that the Gospels were rewritten on a paper variety, the identification of its watermarks implies that the book was created in the last third of the 16thcentury. The analysis of the manuscript margins indicates that the manuscript was rewritten and purchased in Stryi, in the former Przemyśl region. The study of four gift records of the 16thand 17th centuries draws an understanding of how the manuscript has functioned and migrated at the appointed time. First, after the purchase, the codex was donated to the church of Paraskeva Piatnytsa in the Pietniczany village in the Lviv region. In 1641 the codex was gifted over to the Church of the Beheading of John the Baptist in Rozhysche, Sataniv povit. Between 1649 and 1678 the Gospels were presented to the Church of the Intercession of the Virgin in Vinnytsia. In 1678 the book appeared in the Church of the Intercession in the village of Nekhaiky in the Cherkasy region. In the 19th century, the Gospels belonged to the private library of Stanisław Krzyżanowski, who in 1870 donated the manuscript to the Jagiellonian Library.

Opis:
The subject of the article is the phenomenon of handwritten notes on the pages of old prints. Due to their astonishing variety, these notes constitute source material with great research potential, well beyond the history of reading and the history of the book as such. Using the previous observations obtained in the autopsy research with the use of the provenance method, the author presents a study of three examples and conclusions regarding the types of writing activity of owners and users of an antique book in the context of their individual approach to the book and reading. The issues were presented based on old prints materials from the collections of the Polish Academy of Sciences of the Gdańsk Library, taking into account the methodological issues related to obtaining provenance information from the collection of old prints, which in the discussed aspect are still insufficiently developed source data resources.

Artykuł porusza zagadnienie nakładu egzemplarzy pergaminowych oraz papierowych Statutu Jana Łaskiego. Problem ten rozpatrywany jest w dwóch aspektach. Po pierwsze, przybliżono i usystematyzowano funkcjonujące w literaturze przedmiotu poglądy na temat liczby wydrukowanych egzemplarzy. Krytyce poddany został najwcześniejszy, pochodzący z końca XVIII wieku, przekaz autorstwa Tadeusza Czackiego traktujący o nakładzie Statutu. Został on skonfrontowany z obecnym stanem wiedzy o oficynie Jana Hallera. W dalszej części ukazane zostało to, w jaki sposób pogląd o skromnym nakładzie Statutu był powielany w kolejnych publikacjach. Po drugie, przedstawiono rozważania na temat funkcji egzemplarzy pergaminowych oraz papierowych, ich przeznaczenia oraz potencjalnie różnego finansowania nakładu na poszczególnych tworzywach. Całość uzupełniają uwagi na temat prawdopodobnej liczby wydrukowanych egzemplarzy poczynione na podstawie dostępnych źródeł oraz zachowanych do dzisiaj egzemplarzy Statutu.
This article discusses the volume of parchment and paper copies of the Statute by Jan Łaski. The problem is approached by the author within two aspects. The one aims at presenting and systemising various opinions, still functioning in the literature, on the number of printed copies. The earliest mention of the printed volume of the Statute, given by Tadeusz Czacki towards the end of the eighteenth century, is challenged and confronted with the present state of knowledge on Jan Haller’s printing office. The tendency to support the view on the low volume of the edition of the Statute in successive publications is discussed and explained. The other aspect of the issue in question is the considerations on the decidedly separate functions that the parchment and paper copies were to perform, their intended use and potentially different financial support for the editions in either writings. In addition, the author gives his own estimations on the probable number of printed copies, using the available sources and the copies of the Statute that have been preserved until our times.

Wydania średniowiecznych rękopisów liturgicznych typu libri ordinarii wskazują na wzrastające zainteresowanie tymi źródłami ze względu na ich znaczenie dla badań historycznych, tak w zakresie liturgii, jak i kultury okresu średniowiecza (muzyki, sztuki, architektury, obyczajowości). Księgi te powstawały na użytek zakonów i diecezji, a ich celem było unormowanie miejscowych zwyczajów w ramach roku liturgicznego. Libri ordinarii pojawiły się w połowie XI wieku, gdy już używano mszałów, brewiarzy i pontyfikałów, zaś ich rozwój trwał do Soboru Trydenckiego, który dokonał reformy liturgii. Najbardziej produktywnym czasem był wiek XIII i XIV.
The editions of medieval liturgical manuscripts of known as the libri ordinarii indicate a growing interest in these sources due to their importance for historical research, both in the field of the liturgy itself and of the culture of the Middle Ages (music, art, architecture, customs). These books were created for the use of religious orders and dioceses, and their purpose was to normalize the local customs within the frame of the liturgical year. Libri ordinarii appeared in the middle of the 11th century, when the missals, breviaries and pontificals were already in use, and their development continued until the Council of Trent, which reformed the liturgy. The most productive time were the 13th and 14th centuries.

Biblijna księga Judyty, będąca wytworem kultury żydowskiej, należy do greckiego kanonu Septuaginty. Niniejsze studium koncentruje się na wczesnych interpretacjach tej książki w tradycji wschodniego chrześcijaństwa, zwłaszcza w dziełach Klemensa z Aleksandrii i Orygenesa. Obydwa dzieła pokazują, jak twórczo i mądrze chrześcijaństwo wschodnie w drugim i trzecim wieku n.e. rozumiało postać tej tak wyjątkowej biblijnej bohaterki.
The biblical book of Judith, a product of Jewish culture, belongs to the Greek canon of the Septuagint. The present study focuses on early interpretations of this book in the Eastern Christian tradition, particularly in the works of Clement of Alexandria and Origen. Through occasional quotations, both show how creatively and wisely Eastern Christianity of the second and third centuries CE understood the figure of this biblical, unique heroine.
Das biblische Buch Judith, ein Produkt der jüdischen Kultur, gehört zum griechischen Kanon der Septuaginta. Diese Studie konzentriert sich auf die frühen Interpretationen dieses Buches in der ostchristlichen Tradition, insbesondere in den Werken von Clemens von Alexandria und Origenes. Beide Werke zeigen, wie kreativ und weise das östliche Christentum im zweiten und dritten Jahrhundert u. die Figur dieser einzigartigen biblischen Heldin verstehen.

Статья посвящена истории экземпляра Грамматики Мелетия Смотрицкого 1619 г., хранящегося в Библиотеке Вильнюсского университета (шифр  хранения – Rk 337). Несмотря на то, что информация об этом экземпляре была опубликована в 1908 г., некоторые его особенности остались без внимания. Целью нового исследования является раскрытие с помощью комплексного книговедческого анализа материальных особенностей Грамматики Смотрицкого, с указанием признаков, которыми она была наделена до выхода в свет, и признаков, которые появились на вильнюсском университетском экземпляре после издания (переплет, утраты и реставрации, провениенции и маргиналии). Среди бывших владельцев экземпляра выявлены три частных лица из духовного сословия и несколько учреждений. Раскрытые факты использования Грамматики выводят к более широкому кругу вопросов, связанных с рецепцией научного наследия Смотрицкого в среде Ордена василиан Великого Княжества Литовского и Речи Посполитой. Выводы исследования могут быть полезны для нескольких исторических направлений, среди которых можно указать исследования книжной культуры XVII–XVIII в., а также текстологию литургических текстов греко-католической Церкви.
There is a copy of Meletius Smotrytsky Grammar, published in 1619 in Yev’ye (Vievis), which is kept in the Library of Vilnius university (the shelf number – Rk 337) nowadays. Despite the fact that the main information about this copy was published in 1908, some of its features were overlooked. The aim of the research is to reveal, by using methods of bibliographical analysis, all the material features of the copy of Smotrytsky Grammar before its release (the structure of the book, types, ornaments) and after it was published (bookbinding, damages and restorations, provenances and annotations). During the research several owners of this copy were identified – three clergymen (priest Grzegorz Sanocki, student of Vilnius Pontifical Seminary Procopius Hucewicz, and Basilian Samuel Nowicki) and several institutions. Procopius Hucewicz and Samuel Nowicki belonged to the Greek Catholic Church of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The newly established facts related to the use of Smotrytsky‘s Grammar by monks offer a basis for further research on the reception and impact of Smotrytsky’s scholarly legacy among the Basilians of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The findings of the study may be valuable for several historical directions; among those of note are studies of the book culture of the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as the textual scholarship of the liturgical texts of the Greek Catholic Church.

Opis:
One of the important factors determining the public activity of the Galician Ruthenians (Ukrainians) after 1848 was the realization of the idea of educating the people. In the 1850-1860’s exclusively intellectuals were engaged in educational work; peasants and burghers were only recipients. At the time, the main attention was paid to the publication of educational literature for elementary schools and gymnasiums, as well as scientific, popular and religious lectures for intellectuals and common people. This was done by both private publishers and specially created non-gov0ernmental organizations such as the Russophile society Halytsko-Ruska Matytsia (since 1848) and the Ukrainophile society Prosvita (since 1868). Among the editions of Matytsia prevailing publications for the intelligentsia, Prosvita began its publishing activity mainly from small books for the common people.

After 1700 we observe a clear increase in the number of conscious collectors gathering works of art, naturalia and various curiosities – mirabilia, typical of many Baroque “chambers” (Kammer) that were created by collectors during the previous, 17th century. Michael Bernhard Valentini (1657–1729), court physician at the court of the Landgrave of Hessen, published a compendium of encyclopaedic knowledge, a work for academic collectors of natural history specimens, entitled Museum museorum (Vol. I–II, Frankfurt am Main 1704–1714). Valentini provided information about various noteworthy things found in the Old and New World as well as in Asia (India), sometimes exceeding the limits of previous knowledge, both for researchers and collectors. Valentini’s work may be seen as evidence of a real collector’s fever, directed not only at all kinds of rare and curious things (curiosities) but also research objects collected for study purposes, especially in countries north of the Alps (e.g. natural amber and amber with insect inclusions). This German author recommended in his proposed programme for the creation of an ideal modern museum that objects should be arranged into groups, for example naturalia and artificialia and then divided into more detailed subgroups in order to make them more visible and their content more comprehensible, therefore enriching the knowledge of the surrounding world.

Artykuł ma na celu przedstawić ujęcie poszczególnych okresów biblijnego Izraela, które zawiera Pochwała ojców (Syr 44 – 49) Księgi Syracha. Na początku autorka zaznacza kontekst i granice tekstu przyjętego do analizy. Następnie pokrótce przedstawia ogólne wprowadzenie do Pochwały ojców (Syr 44,1-15). Kolejne części artykułu stanowią propozycję periodyzacji, która składa się z trzech części: etapu przymierza (Syr 44,16 – 45,26), etapu proroków i królów (Syr 46,1 – 49,10) oraz etapu odnowy (Syr 49,11-16). Całość zamyka apendyks, który stanowi wypełnienie wcześniejszych etapów historii w osobie Szymona II, arcykapłana świątyni jerozolimskiej (Syr 50,1-24). Periodyzacja dziejów obecna w Pochwale ojców, oprócz chronologii jest prezentacją, w której można zauważyć podejście teologiczne, kanoniczne i kapłańskie.
The article aims at providing a perspective on the successive periods of Biblical Israel as found in the Praise of the Ancestors (Sir 44–49) in the Book of Sirach. The writer begins with determining the boundaries and context of the analyzed text. She then presents briefly a general introduction to the Praise of the Ancestors (Sir 44–49). The next parts of the article offer a proposal for periodization, consisting of three parts: the covenant period (Sir 44:16–45:26), the period of the prophets and kings (Sir 46:1–49:10), and finally the renewal period (Sir 49:11-16). The full text of the Praise is rounded out by an appendix which concerns the fulfillment of all the previous historical periods in the person of Simon II, the high priest of the Jerusalem Temple (Sir 50:1-24). The periodization of history in the Praise of the Ancestors, besides providing chronology, is a presentation that might be described as a theological, canonical and sacerdotal approach.

W Księdze Daniela pojawia się charakterystyczna dla pism apokaliptycznych specyficzna koncepcja historii mająca wymiar uniwersalny, która swoim zasięgiem obejmuje dzieje całego świata. Historia w Księdze Daniela jest ukazana przede wszystkim w aspekcie teologicznym, ponieważ jedynie Bóg jest Panem historii objawiającym w niej swoją królewską władzę, potęgę i majestat, jak również Władcą kontrolującym bieg wydarzeń w dziejach wielkich imperiów ziemskich. Cechą koncepcji historii ukazanej w Księdze Daniela (Dn 2 i 7) jest jej periodyzacja, której podłożem jest tzw. schemat czterech królestw, co wyraża prawdę o tym, że  historia zmierza do swego kresu. Dzieje świata są ukazane jako kolejno następujące po sobie imperia ziemskie, z których każde następne jest gorsze od poprzedniego, co uwypukla prawdę o ich stopniowej degradacji moralnej. Z powodu nasilającego się zła, wszystkie ziemskie imperia będą unicestwione, a na ich miejscu zostanie ustanowione przez Boga wieczne i niezniszczalne królestwo. W odmienny sposób periodyzacja historii została ujęta w Dn 9, gdzie w nawiązaniu do chronologii „szabatowej” (Kpł 25-26), historia została podzielona na „siedemdziesiąt tygodni (lat)”, a przy końcu tego okresu nastanie „wieczna sprawiedliwość”, czyli era ostatecznego zbawienia.
The Book of Daniel presents a particular conception of history having a universal dimension, covering all events in the history of the world. The Book features mostly the theological aspect of history: that only God is the Lord of history, and in it and through it he reveals his royal authority, might and majesty, and evinces himself as the Ruler exercising control over the course of events in the history of great world powers. The periodization of history is the distinctive feature of this conception of history portrayed in the Book of Daniel (Dan 2 and 7). The scheme of four kingdoms underlies such a view, which reflects the belief that history is coming to an end. World history is pictured as a series of successive world empires, with each subsequent kingdom worse than the previous one, testifying to their ever increasing moral depravity. Due to this escalating evil, all the world empires will be annihilated, and in their place God will establish his eternal and indestructible kingdom. The periodization of history is depicted rather differently however in Dan 9, where, with reference to a Shabbat chronology, history is divided into “seventy weeks (of years)” that end with the time of “eternal justice”, i.e. the era of the ultimate salvation.

Pismo o profilu skierowanym do bibliotekarzy bibliotek publicznych Dolnego Śląska jest wydawane przez Dolnośląską Bibliotekę Publiczną im. Tadeusza Mikulskiego we Wrocławiu. Pierwotnie, od 1956 r., miało tytuł „Materiały Metodyczne”, który zmieniono w 1981 r. na „Książka i Czytelnik”. W 2005 r. powstała strona internetowa pisma, a od 2010 r. archiwalne numery upubliczniano w internetowej Bibliotece Cyfrowej. Od początku 2016 r. pismo jest po raz trzeci w swej historii zawieszone. W artykule omówiono zmiany pisma na przestrzeni jego dziejów oraz przeanalizowano zawartość w celu odpowiedzenia na pytanie o przyczyny zawieszenia pisma.
A magazine with a profile addressed to librarians of public libraries in Lower Silesia is published by the Lower Silesian Public Library Tadeusz Mikulski in Wroclaw. Originally, since 1956, it had the title “Methodological Materials” (“Materiały Metodyczne”), which was changed in 1981 to “Book and Reader” (“Książka i Czytelnik”). In 2005, the magazine’s website was created, and since 2010, archival issues have been published in the Digital Library. From the beginning of 2016, the magazine is suspended for the third time in its history. The article discusses the changes of the magazine throughout its history and analyzes the subject content to answer the question about the reasons for suspension of the magazine.

A little recognized to date collection of letters of the renowned Poznań bookseller and editor Jan Konstanty Żupański to Józef Ignacy Kraszewski preserved In the Jagiellonian Library can valuably complement the story of an excellent book by the eminent Polish-Livonian historian, Baron Gustaw Manteuffel (1832–1916). In 1869, Manteuffel published in Riga a book Polnisch Livland [Polish Livonia], which came to interest Polish readers, including Józef Ignacy Kraszewski. The famous novelist encouraged the Polish‑Livonian author to publish his work also in Polish. This correspondence, related in part to preparing Polish publication (Inflanty Polskie, Poznań 1879) brings a lot of interesting details, most importantly concerning its editorial form and technical questions involved, including that of making prints for Manteuffel’s work by graphic artists from Leipzig. The letters indicate also the changing attitude of the Poznań bookseller to the planned publishing project.
