    The nineteenth century brought, among others, tragic experiences in the life of the Polish nation, which were a consequence of the loss of an independent state. But it also revealed maximalism in philosophical aspirations, expressed by a belief that there is a close connection between philosophy and the life of the nation. No doubt these experiences and aspirations contributed to the creation of the “Polish national philosophy” – the philosophy of romanticism. Disputes about its essence revived in the early twentieth century. It seems that the issues raised at that time now require rethinking. Yet, these days – in the times of modern changes related to the processes of globalization, commercialization and dissemination of the model of a society that is multicultural, individualistic and consumptionist – has not the issue of the “Polish national philosophy” become outdated? The purpose of this paper is to formulate a few remarks on the “national philosophy”. It aims to do so by referring to significant opinions of a few outstanding representatives of Polish philosophy, whose ideas were instrumental in creating and shaping the Polish philosophical thought.

    The paper attempts a theoretical confrontation of two paradigms underlying contemporary historical reflection on the development of Polish philosophical and religious thought: the traditional paradigm of history of philosophy, and the paradigm of history of ideas which predominates in more recent research (and, to a certain extent, constitutes an alternative to the former). What is the general methodological status of scientific procedures employed within each of these approaches? Are these approaches qualitatively akin, i.e. aiming towards relatively equivalent cognitive goals using different theoretical means, or essentially competitive? Is there a mutual genealogical relationship underpinning the evolution of these paradigms? And finally, what factors determine the process of evolution from a metaphysical perspective? The aspects enumerated above, as well as other considerations related to the general problem outlined in the title of the paper, will constitute an attempt to assess the current state of research in this field.

    The article addresses the issue of one of the more intense and captivating European scientific disputes, likewise common to Poland, in the era of the seventeenth-century transformation of knowledge formation, which centered around the possibility of the existence of vacuum, and which culminated in 1647. The fundamental aim of the article comes down to an attempt to determine a position in the scientific-cognitive debate, from which the pro and anti-Polish and European representatives of The Republic of Letters (Respublica literaria)  could voice their opinions. In the course of the analysis of the mid-seventeenth century scientific discourse, the reflections of Valeriano Magni, Torricelli, Jan Brożek, Wojciech Wijuk Kojałowicz, Blaise Pascal, Giovanni Elefantuzzi, Jacob Pierius, and Pierre Guiffart are subjected to close scrutiny. From the perspective of contextualism in the history of science, experiments demonstrating the existence of vacuum are perceived as anomalies that fall into the crisis of normal science, largely based on Aristotle’s physics. The conflict between the old and the new is not, however, presented as a battle of progression with epigonism, but merely as a contest between opposing individual views and the concept of science, which before the formation of the new paradigm was accompanied by ambiguous verification criteria.

    This paper combines on the one hand the educational ideals and didactics in the schools of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth reformed by the Commission of National Education (1773), and on the other hand one of the most representative testimonies of the then intellectual culture, i.e. Encyclopédie ou dictionnaire universel raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers, published in the years 1751–1780. It shows continuity with regard to learned culture and the place of philosophy in modern school. In accord with the standards of the Encyclopédie the European school preserved the course of philosophy in the spirit of philosophia recentiorum, at least at the university level. This philosophy took a critical approach in its assimilation of the elements of modern epistemology, especially the accomplishments of modern natural sciences. Such attitude was also typical of the school reformed in the mid-eighteenth century in the Commonwealth, especially by the orders of Piarists and Jesuits. The Commission had introduced independent mathematical and natural subjects, a fact that limited philosophy. In secondary schools philosophy was reduced to logic and practical ethics, and at universities to natural law with social, political, and economic elements. For this reason they even departed from a traditional structure of university, with a propedeuctic faculty of philosophy, when in the spirit of the physiocratic physical and moral orders a two-element structure of universities was established. Despite these changes, philosophical elements can be found even in the didactics of natural sciences in the schools of the Commission. The same tendencies are apparent in the then European school, therefore in the form of interpretations drawing on the category of substance and its properties, or even the conception of the animal soul.

    The Slavonic theme was one of the important motifs in the reflection present in the Polish literature of the 19th century. It appeared in literary works, in journalism, and in literary criticism – taken up in several contexts: historiosophical, esthetic and political ones. Questions and controversies connected with it were formulated as early as the beginning of Romanticism in Kazimierz Brodziński’s and Zorian Dołęga Chodakowski’s treatises, and the Paris lectures on Slavic literature delivered by Adam Mickiewicz (1840-1844) were the most complete development of the subject. The motif can be found in works of every Polish writer belonging to the Romantic epoch. The present article both outlines the whole panorama and points to particular aspects of the Polish thought about Slavism and attempts to give an answer to the question about what position Norwid’s reflection has against this background, as in his works Slavic motifs with different intensity are present from the end of the 1840s to the last years of his life (the poem The Slav written in 1882). It points to both similarities to Brodziński’s, Mickiewicz’s, and Krasiński’s thought, and to an original character of Norwid’s reflection resulting first of all from the ever present in Norwid’s works tendency to confront Slavism with the Christian universalism. The values from the perspective of which Norwid takes up the subject are: freedom and hope understood not only in the political meaning, but also in the existential and religious sense. Such a view allowed the poet to avoid Slavophil tones and to maintain distrust of Pan-Slavism as a political doctrine. Analyses of Norwid’s works listed in the chronological order reveal the evolution of the poet’s ideological position: from hopes of a philosopher of history to doubts of an ironist. They also emphasized a multitude of aspects of this subject that are connected with the variety of ways to talk about it. Slavic motifs appear in dramatic mysteries (Wanda, Krakus) and in poems (e.g. The Song of Our Land, Chopin’s Piano, The Slav), in poetic treatises (Bondage, About Freedom of Speech), in discussions and letters.

    This article examines the analogies, and more specifically the historical 'theatre of the imagination', between Tytus Czyżewski's Robespierre/Rhapsody (1927) and Stanisław Wyspiańs-ki's poetic dramas Rhapsodies (Kazimierz the Great and Bolesław the Bold). Each of those poems foregrounds its principal historical character. Wyspiański's dramatic poems, commonly known as Rhapsodies, focus on Kazimierz the Great, Bolesław the Bold, and Piast. kings of pivotal significance in his vision of Poland's historical destiny. Twenty years later Tytus Czyżewski, an acclaimed avant-garde painter and poet, composed a poetic-essayistic salmagundi, in which he sought to render in a similarly elevated style and condensed dialogue the drama of the leaders of the French Revolution, Robespierre and Danton. While Robespierre has to face, apart from some common people, God, the Spirit and Judges that sit in judgment on him, the final section of Rhapsody evokes Juliusz Słowacki. A monologue, mimicking his lofty verse, establishes a metaphorical common thread in Polish history – from the days of mail-clad knights to the wretched everyday life in the trenches – set against a broad background of wars, destruction and the French Revolution. For Czyżewski the French Revolution was a ground-breaking event, the first act of a great historical process that ushered in the Modern Age with its ideas of progress, reason, freedom, social justice, the elimination of poverty. It continues to inspire mankind with the hope that even a most ambitious change is possible. For Wyspiański, on the other hand, the grand project of human emancipation does give rise to doubts whether a wholesale obliteration of the Old is justified and to questions about God, free will, theodicy and destiny, and the 'tyranny of reason'. The differences between the two philosophies of history – Wyspiański's, from the turn of the 19th century, and Czyżewski's, representative of the artistic and intellectual climate of the late 1920s – are no doubt profound, and yet, what both of them seem to share is a deep concern with the relevance of history for the present and for designing the future.

    Zygmunt Krasiński w Przedświcie wystąpił jako prorok zwiastujący królestwo Boże, „nowe niebo i nową ziemię”. Poemat nie wyrósł jednak wyłącznie na glebie adwentystycznych marzeń emigracji polskiej, jest bowiem również dziełem artystycznym realizującym założenia nowej formy profetyczno-idealistycznej „poezji trzeciej epoki”. Przedświt to słowo „trzeciego wieszcza” zwieńczające „rozeznawanie się w jestestwie swoim” „duszy narodowej” pozbawionej „ciała politycznego”, tłumaczące najpełniej sens przeszłości i przyszłości narodu oraz charakter jego posłannictwa. To także poemat miłosny, w którym Krasiński uwiecznił swoją Beatricze, przynosząc zarazem objawienie prawd ostatecznych.
    In his epic poem Przedświt [„Predawn”] Zygmunt Krasiński appears as a prophet announcing the Kingdom of God, „a new heaven and a new earth.” However, the poem does not merely express the ‘Adventist dreams’ of the Polish diaspora, since it is also a literary work advancing the ideas of the new prophetic and idealist “poetry of the third epoch.” Przedświt, the voice of the third Polish Romantic “seer,” is simultaneously the conclusion of the “discernment of its own being” by the “nation’s soul” deprived of a political body: the poem explains, in a possibly fullest manner, the meaning of the past and of the future of the Polish nation, pointing to the core of the nation’s mission in the world. Last but not least, Przedświt is also a love poem: while conveying the revelation of the final things, Krasiński also immortalized his Beatrice. Translated by Dorota Chabrajska
