Opis:
Author tells the story of his close and very long-lasting acquaintance with Leszek Kołakowski as well as commentates on his intellectual biography and achievements as political and literary essayist, philosopher, historian of ideas, and public figure. In particular he describes in details the first half of Kołakowski’s life, namely the period when he made his long journey from being communist in his student years to becoming as a young scholar the leading figure of Marxist revisionism in the late fifties and after a time a principled critic of Marxism itself and a fervent anti-communist. In many respects Kołakowski’s itinerary was not exceptional but it had at least two noteworthy characteristics. First, in opposition to quite a few other cases his way away from communism turned out to be scholarly fruitful as it resulted in an uniquely in-depth historical research covering the founders, the golden age and the breakdown of so called “scientific socialism” (his voluminous work Main Currents of Marxism remains one of the best and the most comprehensive monographs of the topic). Second, Kołakowski’s abandoning of his former Weltanschauung was followed by his discovery of religion as an extremely important part of human experience and sine qua non condition of the survival of civilization permanently menaced by barbarians. However it is to be doubt whether he may be considered as a convert or a religious thinker in the strict sense of the word since he believed in horrors of the absence of God rather than in the real presence of his in the world. As defender of transcendence and tradition Kołakowski certainly became a kind of catholic-Christian without denomination but as a critical philosopher remained at the same time highly sceptical about everything. Dreaming of solid fundamentals he was all his life an uncompromising enemy of any fundamentalism. Being nostalgic about the Absolute he was incurable antiabsolutist.

The article shows the evolution of historians’ and sociologists’ views in 1874-2010 period how the historical relations between science and religion should be presented. The key theories have been discussed which are the milestones in this evolution: from 19th century Draper’s and White’s works which formed the so called conflict thesis to the present complexity thesis, which recognizes the religion as significant co-originator of modern science.

Opis:
In “My heart laid bare” Baudelaire writes about the “Universal Religion” devised for “the alchemists of thought,” “a religion that comes from man, considered as a divine memento.” The idea, as we read in the text, was inspired by the writings of Chateaubriand, De Maistre and those of the “Alexandrians”. And indeed, the two former authors wrote explicitly about a „universal tradition” that finds its fulfillment in the Catholic religion. It does not matter if we recognize the “Alexandrians” as representatives of the Neoplatonic school, the Alexandrian Fathers of Church, or disciples of Hermetism, the very term implies a tradition of both syncretic and mystic character that resembles gnosis. Baudelaire’s “Universal Religion,” despite his Catholic convictions, cannot be associated with Catholicism. Based on a universal transmission of myths and symbols, it rather refers to eternal truths about man as well as to the divine source of all beings – also in the modern world, which puts God’s existence in doubt.

The article was devoted to the methodology of research on the relationship between literature-religion. Its aim is a critical reflection on the use of the category of ‘the sacred’ in the research. In Poland, in 70. of the last century, ‘the sacred’ has become the vital category for reflections on the religious aspects of literature (eliminating such terms as ‘catholic literature’ and ‘religious literature’). The historiographical method is used in the article. The author presents the steps of the presence of the category ‘the sacred’ in the humanities, especially in the Polish literature studies. The main results of the analysis: sacrological research had prepared us to meet study of literature and cultural studies. Many factors point to the fact that sacral research was one of the first attempts to build a bond between literary and cultural studies. The term ‘the sacred’ did not have classification or typological aim (such function was sometimes assigned to ‘religious literature’ term). Its wide range allowed activities that led to identification of the religious profile of the literary work. Its primary context was not any ideology or religious doctrine, but cultural anthropology, so it demanded culture studies competence more than being involved in world outlook. The wide range of the notion – completely natural and desirable in the anthropology of culture – did not have to be something obvious in the research of separate literary works, at times evoking the image of the world strictly connected with particular religion, or even particular worship. The answer to this was Stefan Sawicki’s offer to replace ‘the sacred’ category when analysing such works with other terms. Organizational measures undertaken by the founder of Lublin school of sacral research were soon verified by the reality of academic discussion – subject, as each discussion, to the rules of terminology fashion. ‘The sacred’ became fashionable term for some time – used and overused, perhaps. It became the key-word to open all possible references to religious sphere in literary works. It was applied not only where the layer of religious meaning remained generalized in the text, but also in those which were distinctly involved in the symbolic world of a specific religion. There were of course attempts to introduce new notion where the context demanded it. Taken in the article analyzes the concept of the sacred in literary studies have been limited mainly to the area of Polish literary criticism. The text encourages further research. It has practical significance. It explains the methods, can serve students and other readers (such as teachers or students) to acquire the skills to interpret literary texts. The author is not only critically discusses the use of the sacred in the research literature, but also proposes a new research tools in the form of the category of “spirituality”.

Opis:
W celu zapewnienia Kościołowi wolności wyznania, wysiłki duszpasterskie i dyplomatyczne podejmują biskupi miejsca: kardynał John Baptist Wu Cheng-Chung (zmarł w 2002) i aktualny biskup Joseph Zen Ze-kiun.
The Catholic Church in Hong Kong represents the Sino-Asian multi-culture. A Hong Kong Catholic’s identity is set on a triple affiliation: Chinese, Hong Kong, and civic. Although Hong Kong was a British Crown Colony (1898-1997), the first missionaries here were Catholic priests: 1841 – a Swiss priest Theodore Joset (an Irish soldiers’ chaplain); 1842 – the Franciscans began systematic evangelisation of the colonies; 1874 – Timoleon Raimondi (an apostolic vicar) became the first bishop of Hong Kong; 2013 – a former colony’s population is over 7 million people, including 350 thousand of Catholics of Chinese origin and 150 thousand of immigrant Catholics. Since 1 July 1997, Hong Kong has is part of the People’s Republic of China, but the full integration of the former colony is supposed to become effective in 50 years. In practice, this means that in the country there are two systems: the Chinese one and the Hong Kong one. In order to ensure the freedom of religion to the Church, pastoral and diplomatic efforts are taken by the local bishops: Cardinal John Baptist Wu Cheng-Chung (died in 2002) and the current Bishop, Joseph Zen Ze-kiun.

What are we talking about when we talk about universal religion? The purpose of this article is to present a preliminary methodological, typological and historical outline (focusing particularly on modern France modern France), which facilitates answering this question. If we accept the meaning given to religion by modernity (which defines it by a form of worship, doctrine, morality and community), we conclude that the idea of a universal religion, as having numerous historical variants, fulfills its criteria in various ways. At the same time, however, it transcends positive religions, and its critical-investigative attitude towards them are even the necessary conditions of possibility of its emergence. The idea of universal religion can remain at the level of purely intentional solution or project (as in the case of modern natural religion, which is the common denominator of all religions, based on the so-called Credo minimum), it can also although this is rare, adopt a specific social character (as in the case of cults created during the French Revolution). The idea of a universal religion can also be associated with one of the historical religions. In the Western world and its Judeo-Christian context, it would generally be Catholicism.

One of the major ideas of the German poet and philosopher Rudolf Pannwitz consists in treating philosophy, science and art as “one creature”, i.e. they should not be treated separately. Thus the questions are raised of where to place religion in Pannwitz’s thinking and how it refers to philosophy and art. His understanding of religion or its mytho-poetic realization have been discussed on the grounds of a few of his essays and poems. As a poet -philosopher Pannwitz left a rarely discussed which has been dealt with in the article. The author has also pointed out how it refers to Pannwitz’s cosmological concept of religion.

The mysterious term „marzeah” occurs twice in the Old Testament. In the Book of Amos it stands for an aristocratic feast, whereas in the Book of Jeremiah we read about „the house of marzeah” meaning a place used for mourning for the dead. The texts from Ugarit provide us with more information. Thorough analysis of the texts implies that „marzeah” was an institution assembling people representing upper social classes. At least one of its aims was cult of the dead. It clearly resembles mesopotamian „kipsu” – a ritual feast where people called their ancestors to „eat bread and drink water”. In the Bible it is a clear example of the trait of pagan beginnings of Israel, whose elements in their fragmentary form lasted until VI century B.C.

The aim of the article is to show how Quinet formulates this idea at the intersection of three different fields: literature, philosophy of history and history of religion. The first one is used to give it form, the two others to interpret historical data and religious beliefs according to a millenarianist key. The universal religion of Quinet, which fits into a unitive worldview, is paradoxically a religion without religion, emanated from the ‘empty sky’.

Potem rozwijali ją m.in. ks. Stanisław Nagy, ks. Romuald Łukaszyk, religioznawca ks. Henryk Zimoń, a zwłaszcza ks. Marian Rusecki (uczeń ks. Kopcia) – główny współtwórca szkoły i jej najpłodniejszy autor, którego naukowe dokonania są wizytówką szkoły i oddziałują na współczesną polską teologię fundamentalną. Fundamental theology as a discipline and academic centre conducting research as well as didactic and organisational activity has existed at John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin since its beginning, first as Department of Fundamental Theology (1918-20), then Section of Fundamental Theology (1920-99), and since 1999 as Institute of Fundamental Theology. As it has developed, the centre began to take the shape of a school of science – the Lublin School of Fundamental Theology. Its foundations were laid by Rev. Edward Kopeć. Subsequently, it was developed by, among others, Rev. Stanisław Nagy, Rev. Romuald Łukaszyk, Rev. Henryk Zimoń (religious scholar), and especially by Rev. Marian Rusecki (student of Rev. E. Kopeć) – the main co-founder of the school and its most prolific author, whose scientific achievements are the showcase of the school and have influenced the contemporary Polish fundamental theology. During his time, especially from the beginning of the 21st century, the school reported the most significant scientific and organisational achievements. Currently, it is developed by the students of Rev. M. Rusecki who work at the Institute of Fundamental Theology and its graduates working in other centres. This article presents the scientific characteristics (historical outline, features and main trends) of the Lublin School of Fundamental Theology (Section 1) and its most important achievements (Section 2): main publications, organisational achievements as well as national and international cooperation.
