Modern critical reception characterizes patriarch Isaac as a particular character type: the schlemiel. This article provides a tour through the cumulative evidence for this comedic read, focusing on Genesis 27, the blessing of Jacob. It provides a revised narratological and literary context, arguing that Isaac’s fivefold questioning demonstrates not confusion, but awareness: he knows exactly which son is in front of him. The paper presents an alternative narratological and literary context for Isaac, framing his questions in terms of the editing process: a synchronic reading of Isaac’s acumen is corroborated by evidence from diachronic reading. The redaction history of the Isaac material in chapter 26 yields a number of points suggesting the dependence of the Abraham material on the Isaac narrative. A number of features indicate a stronger, less subordinate Isaac figure based on the earlier tradition revealed by a complex transmission history than the image arising from the mainstream synchronic reading of chapter 27 seems to depict.

In his earliest letter, 1 Thessalonians, Paul addresses the issue of eschatology, leaving us a surprising anthropological description of the human being as “spirit, soul, and body.” Paul uses terms that are familiar to his readers. However, the first term in this threefold division of a human being, “spirit,” is the most emphasised, since the human being is no longer made up exclusively of “body and soul.” In this brief contribution, I will attempt to examine this term, “spirit,” as illuminated by its immediate narrative context and by other Pauline pneumatological texts and by its first reception. In this way, the reader will better understand the Pauline vision of the human being in the eschatology, in his ultimate destiny.

The review focuses on presenting to the reader the latest book by Marek Buś, titled Idee i formy. Studia i szkice o Norwidzie, Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, Lublin 2014. Due to the nature of the publication, which is largely a collection of previously published articles – it describes their character and purpose. It answers the question of how the author managed to organise studies that differ in terms of genre and that are addressed to various recipients with different reading competences. It discusses the role of the publication in relation to the previous researcher’s works, and its unique value, also related to its contribution to the abolition of the barrier dividing books into those intended for a small group of specialists and those for the general public.
Recenzja skupia się na przybliżeniu czytelnikowi treści najnowszej książki Marka Busia Idee i formy. Studia i szkice o Norwidzie. Ze względu na charakter omawianej publikacji, która w znacznej części jest zbiorem wcześniej wydanych artykułów, opisuje ich charakter i przeznaczenie. Odpowiada na pytanie, w jaki sposób Autor poradził sobie z uporządkowaniem studiów różniących się pod względem gatunkowym i kierowanych do rozmaitych odbiorów, o odmiennych kompetencjach czytelniczych. Wskazuje na rolę książki Busia względem wcześniejszych jego prac, oraz jej wyjątkową wartość, także związaną z wkładem w znoszenie bariery dzielącej książki na te, przeznaczone dla wąskiego grona specjalistów, i na popularnonaukowe.

In 1 Cor 15:54-55, Paul quotes Isa 25:8 and Hos 13:14. A significant distance between these citations and the corresponding MT and LXX has been often explained as Paul’s intervention. The present article discusses the Hebrew original and compares the citations from 1 Cor 15 with other ancient translations. The polyvalence of the original source, semantic shifts due to the target languages, and accretion of meaning in the transmission process explain Paul’s text without a need of charging him of pia fraus. In the end, we try to deduce from this case study some elements of Paul's hermeneutics.

The aim of the article is to answer the question how Cyprian Norwid understood Juliusz Słowacki’s poem entitled Anhelli (1838). Norwid’s interpretation of Anhelli, which was put forward in his lectures O Juliuszu Słowackim (1961), was significantly different from the previous ones. Before Norwid, the critics of Anhelli admired its aesthetic layer and appreciated the documentary motifs, but could not make sense of its extremely pessimistic message. Norwid, however, interpreted Anhelli as an allegorical reflection of what Charles Taylor would have called the Polish social imaginary. Emphasising the role of the metaphorical meaning of a few motifs in the world presented (especially the one of Siberia as the „negative pole” of the Polish civilisation and the picture of characters as supporters of particular ethical views), Norwid interpreted Słowacki’s poem as an allegory of a grave crisis of the Polish collective consciousness as well as a picture of the decay of the national community. In this way, Norwid’s reflection on Anhelli gave him the opportunity to criticise the qualities of the 19th-century Polish culture and the mentality of the then emigrants.

Celem artykułu jest odpowiedź na pytanie, jak Cyprian Norwid rozumiał poemat Juliusza Słowackiego pt. Anhelli (1838). Norwidowska interpretacja Anhellego, którą przedstawił w swoich wykładach O Juliuszu Słowackim (1961) znacznie różniła się od poprzednich. Przed Norwidem krytycy Anhellego podziwiali jego warstwę estetyczną i doceniali wątki dokumentalne, choć nie potrafili zaakceptować jego skrajnie pesymistycznego przekazu. Natomiast Norwid zinterpretował poemat jako alegoryczne odzwierciedlenie tego, co Charles Taylor nazwałby polskim imaginarium społecznym. Podkreślając rolę metaforycznego znaczenia najważniejszych motywów w świecie przedstawionym utworu (zwłaszcza motywu Sybiru jako „bieguna ujemnego” polskiej cywilizacji, a także kreacji bohaterów jako reprezentantów określonych postaw ideowych), Norwid zinterpretował wiersz Słowackiego jako alegorię głębokiego kryzysu polskiej świadomości zbiorowej oraz obraz rozpadu społeczności narodowej. W ten sposób refleksja Norwida na temat Anhellego umożliwiła mu dokonanie krytycznej oceny charakterystycznych cech dziewiętnastowiecznej kultury polskiej i mentalności ówczesnych emigrantów.

The following article addresses the usefulness of Noraʼs concept of a ʻsite of memoryʼ for the preservation and interpretation of those historic buildings and structures which already enjoy legal protection as monument. First, the denotations of Pierre Noraʼs notion of lieux de mémoire and Alois Rieglʼs concept of a Denkmal (or monument) are juxtaposed. Second, the paper presents the methodological problems involved in studying sites of memory, and offers guidelines inspired by Aleida and Jan Assmanʼs works on cultural memory. Third, these theoretical notions are then related to practical experience gathered while completing a project devoted to “Church of Peace in Jawor as a site of memory”; insights from the project lead to conclusions regarding the possibility of studying the social aspects of built heritage conservation. The conclusion of the paper identifies the characteristics and features of lieux de mémoire which may assist in the identification of places of memory from the perspective of heritage protection.
Poniższy artykuł dotyczy przydatności koncepcji "miejsc pamięci" Nory w zachowaniu i interpretacji tych historycznych budynków i struktur, które już korzystają z ochrony prawnej jako zabytki. Po pierwsze, zestawiono denotacje pojęcia lieux de mémoire Pierre'a Nory i pojęcia Denkmal (lub monumentu) Aloisa Riegla. Po drugie, w artykule przedstawiono problemy metodologiczne związane z badaniem miejsc pamięci i zaproponowano wskazówki inspirowane pracami Aleidy i Jana Assmanów na temat pamięci kulturowej. Po trzecie, te teoretyczne koncepcje są następnie odnoszone do praktycznych doświadczeń zebranych podczas realizacji projektu "Kościół Pokoju w Jaworze jako miejsce pamięci"; spostrzeżenia z projektu prowadzą do wniosków dotyczących możliwości badania społecznych aspektów konserwacji dziedzictwa budowlanego. W podsumowaniu artykułu wskazano cechy i właściwości lieux de mémoire, które mogą być pomocne w identyfikacji miejsc pamięci z perspektywy ochrony dziedzictwa.

The author of the article has recalled Stefan Żeromski’s comedy, its premiere at Juliusz Osterwa and Mieczysław Limanowski’s Reduta and, above all, the discussion which began in the Warsaw press in 1925 and has been continued to this day. The author has identified and discussed some basic threads: the genology of the work, and its theatricality and ideology. Almost all critics of the interwar period got involved in the beginnings of the discussion, regardless of their experience and political orientation. Readers and theatre critics (incidentally, the play Uciekła mi przepióreczka came in literary and theatrical circulation almost at the same time) perceived a call for a new patriotism in the work, which Przełęcki was supposed to spread in the liberated Homeland. The formal shape of the work, too, contributed to calling it a masterpiece, while the quick death of the author transformed the comedy almost in a literary testament.

The figure of the first Roman emperor in many ways had an impact on the Polish culture, especially in historiography and literature. In my paper I focus on some issues connected with the subject. I discuss the ideas presented by Tadeusz Zieliński, one of the most eminent researchers of the ancient world in Europe in the first part of 20th century. He devoted a significant part of his opus to present his own vision of Augustus seen as a reformer of the Roman state religion. Zieliński built the emperor’s image as the saviour of the Roman world in the face of „the end of times”. This term played significant role in Zieliński’s thinking about Roman history at the end of the Republic. For the Polish scholar celebration of the secular game in 17 BC was the final task done by Augustus. This task Zieliński defined as the sacred mission and connected with the figure of Sibyl and the impact of the Etruscan theory of saeculum. For Zieliński, Augustus belonged to the most important men of providence in Roman history. In the same way I discuss the ideas presented by Ludwik Piotrowicz and Mieczysław St. Popławski. Both scholars analised the question of imperial cult in depth. Popławski expressed original view on Augustus apotheosis seen as the development of imperial cult in transcendental perspective. Piotrowicz instead saw this problem as a purely political phenomenon. Last part of my paper is devoted to short resentation of the echos of Augustus’ bimillenium in Polish scholar activity.

The article att empts to defi ne the history of historiography as a subdiscipline of history; it indicates the numerous competences of historians of historiography which are nessesary for undertaking an (auto)refl ection around the history of their discipline, for touching the theoretical and methodological aspects of historiography, and for the study of historicity of historiographical texts. Th e author asks about the current status of the history of historiography and new horizons of research. Regarding the fi eld of changes in the ways of comunication, she sees potential chances for increasing the interest of new recipients in the history of historiography. The author amplifi es the weft of reception, understood as a phenomenon that belongs to the comunication situation occuring between the author of transmission and his recipients. The author refers to the inspiration of the methodological conception of the school of reception aesthetics from Constance (W. Iser, R. Jauss) and the hermeneutics of H-G. Gadamer. Reception is a new concept for presenting the history of historiography as a fi eld of research on the historicity of historical works.

The paper provides a brief outline of the biography and works of Stanisław Lisiecki (1872–1960), a little-known Polish classics scholar, who is remembered only, if at all, as a translator of Plato’s Republic. In his early fifties, having given up his career as a Catholic priest, he started working in the field of classics and managed to publish several minor works on Plato in Polish and Latin. His decision to abandon the clergy was not welcomed by many members of the Polish academia and most of his translations of Plato and Aristotle remained unpublished. His renderings of Plato could not compete with the highly accessible translations made by W. Witwicki, which were becoming increasingly popular at that time. Furthermore, Lisiecki’s translations of Aristotle, despite the pioneering nature of his undertaking, met with strong criticism at various university seminars.

Opis:
The article discusses the research proposal presented in Światowa historia literatury polskiej. Interpretacje [World History of Polish Literature. Interpretations], edited by Magdalena Popiel, Tomasz Bilczewski and Stanley Bill. Mikołajczak contrasts the research concept of world literature with the dominant approaches to the world literature in the area of contemporary literary studies and the traditional model of the history of literature. She reflects on the situation of Polish literature in the world, taking into account the ways in which Polish works circulate in other cultural circles, the possibilities and limitations of translation as well as shifts within the canon. She also indicates the opportunities that open up for Polish literature in the global context.
