Opis:
Museum education is a subdiscipline of Pedagogy which has been changing rapidly during the current century. The beginning of such education was inevitably related to the origin of the museum. The richest royal men as kings, princes and priests set up their own individual collections which were displayed only to chosen people. The first museums are claimed to have existed during the Italian Renaissance, for instance Pope Sixtus IV hired Michaelangelo Buonarrotti to create a special place for ancient collections. During the French Revolution it was believed that art had got an unique ability to rehabilitate those members of society who suffered from alcoholism and other kinds of pathology. The Louvre was opened to the public in 1793 and, since that time, art collections have started to be organised in special exhibition form. At the end of the 19th century two German art historians and educationists Alfred Lichtwark and Georg Kerchensteiner started to form a special educational programme for children and young people, concerning the museum collection. In the history of Pedagogy they are claimed to be the forerunners of museum education which has been developing into one of the most influential and potential kinds of cultural education in the 21st century. Among history studies, I would like to present museum education in the context of one selected Polish historical museum and then analyze and interpret the ‘museum lesson’ in comparison with contemporary movements in museology and critical, progressive pedagogy.

Opis:
How is the memory of the Holocaust and Auschwitz seen today among young Poles and Germans, is it different from that of the past? What are the differences in the memory space and education about the Holocaust between the two countries, and what do they have in common? The article is ba- sed on three pillars, and what served as foundations for them was a survey conducted with Polish and German youth in late April and May 2013, imme- diately after their visit to the Auschwitz-Birkenau. The first part concerns the individual and family memory of young people from Poland and Germany, who came to the Memorial and Museum of Auschwitz-Birkenau (MMA-B); there are also issues related to the intergenerational transmission of war fate of the relatives. The second pillar takes on teaching about the Holocaust at school and the evaluation of historical education from the student’s point of view. There are presented the opinions of many historians, teachers and edu- cators struggling with the effects of the reform of history teaching. The third and most extensive part of the article presents the issues related to historical education in the memorial site and young people confronting their past expe- rience, knowledge, notions with the authenticity of MMA-B. Fundamental questions has been raised about the sense of maintaining authenticity of the memorial site and the reason that makes the memory of the Holocaust such an important task for future generations.

Opis:
The subject of this article is the use of public consultations in the process of planning a participatory museum. The authors start by mentioning current discussions about participation in culture and debates among museum curators, culture experts, and sociologists concerning a new type of museum. In this context, they present Nina Simon’s idea of a participatory museum, which is a theoretic frame of reference for the long-term activities of the Józef Piłsudski Museum in Sulejówek, an institution desiring to establish a modern participatory museum in a certain social context. At the end, the results of the public consultations are presented. The data shows that one condition for the creation of a participatory museum is an effective, institutionalized, interactive system of communication. Three areas connected with the local community in which the museum could develop participatory projects were also indicated: the joint creation of memorial sites, community integration, and exhibition and educational activities.
