The author undertakes problem of connections between history of culture and places of memory studies. The notion of milieu de mémoire is discussed in an interdisciplinary perspective, taking as an example the city of Wałbrzych. The city map is scanned for “meaningful places” in order to find their axiological content and (cultural) modes-of-being connected to them. Also, certain peculiarities of Lower Silesian places of memory have to be taken into consideration given the plurality of historical layers and often hard to identify cultural influences characterizing the region. Postulated interdisciplinary approach, which is always important when studying places of memory, becomes even more valuable because in this case a historical research is necessary. Also, a ponderable part of the article is concerned with a local photographer’s – Paweł Sokołowski – work, which is an inspiring example of visual presentation of places of memory.

The centenary of the establishment of the Department for the History of Polish Culture at the Jagiellonian University is a good opportunity to recall the scientific achievements in this discipline. In Galicia, in the second half of the 19th century, research on the history of education, literature and culture was conducted at the Academy of Arts and Sciences, founded in 1872, and the Jagiellonian University, where Stanisław Tarnowski, Ignacy Chrzanowski, Kazimierz Morawski, Józef Szujski, Wacław Szujski, Antoni Karbowiak, Jan Ptaśnik, Jan Leniek and others delivered lectures. However, it was not until Stanisław Kot’s scientific activity that he was appointed associate professor at the Department for the History of Polish Culture at the Jagiellonian University in 1920. His seminar on the history of culture has enjoyed significant popularity and was attended by students of various political orientations and national identities. Between 1925 and 1939, Kot promoted 22 doctors and four of his students obtained habilitation. Due to his political involvement, the Sanation authorities, introducing a new law on academic schools in 1933, decided to abolish his chair. After the Second World War and a short diplomatic episode as an ambassador in Rome from 1945 to 1947, Kot remained in exile. In Kraków, research on the history of culture and education was continued by his students, Henryk Barycz and Jan Hulewicz. The administrative and human resources structure of their teams was changed several times. In 1971, the Department for the History of Education and Culture was established. After Barycz’s retirement, it was consecutively managed by Jan Hulewicz, Kamilla Mrozowska, Renata Dutkowa, Julian Dybiec, Andrzej Banach and Krzysztof Stopka. Currently, the entity bears the name of the Department for the History of Culture and Education. Its six employees carry out extensive research in the fields of cultural history, the history of science and education as well as the history of Polish Armenians.

Elżbieta Nowicka’s book Zapisane w operze. Studia z historii i estetyki opery (Wydawnictwo Poznańskie 2012) [Written in opera. The studies from history and aesthetics of opera] is an attempt to read the ideas, myths and idioms of culture enshrined in works of opera from the 17th to the 20th century. This process of registering takes place on several levels of operatic works: in the librettos, the music and in their staging. It is thanks to these that operas often prove to be the most interesting expression of the presence of myths and ideas in culture, and Elżbieta Nowicka’s book encourages the reader to return to such works.

This article focuses on the prepositions of the monastery of the Canon Regular of the Lateran in Krasnik from its foundation in May 1468 to the reform of 1620-1627. Founded by Jan Rabsztynski of Teczyn, the owner of Krasnik goods, the monastery was considered as one of the prominent centers in terms of religions, social and cultural activity in the Lublin Region. Therefore, the studying of its history, culture and religious activities are important for getting to know the history of the city and its region. The culture of the monastery influenced the culture of the local environment, while the culture of the surroundings area left traces in the culture and activities of the monastery.

The text presents the scholarly accomplishments of Edward Potkowski, a historian of the written culture of the Middle Ages, researcher of the history of manuscripts. Edward Potkowski was a professor at the University of Warsaw and the Aleksander Gieysztor Academy of Humanities in Pułtusk, as well as director of the Central Archive of Historical Records in Warsaw (1981–1986) and member of many scholarly institutions, both Polish and foreign.

Recenzowana pozycja ukazuje problem kształtowania się galicyjskiej świadomości w istniejącej 146 lat prowincji cesarstwa Austro-Węgier, którą określano mianem Galicji. Autor omawianej pracy prezentuje poszczególne etapy kształtowania się „idei Galicji”, odwołując się do polskich, ukraińskich, żydowskich oraz niemiecko-austriackich aspektów historii politycznej, społecznej, ekonomicznej i kulturowej tego regionu. Autor nie wartościuje poszczególnych narracji, traktuje je jako poznawczo równorzędne, a zarazem omawia wnikliwie zarówno obszerne, jak i drobne teksty, na zasadzie ich związku tematycznego z Galicją. Podstawową tezą książki jest przekonanie o ukształtowaniu się swoistego rodzaju „narodu galicyjskiego”, czyli wspólnej dla mieszkańców tego regionu tożsamości zbiorowej: wieloetnicznej i wielokulturowej, opartej na wzorcu Galicjanina jako obywatela w pełni utożsamiającego się ze swoją „ojczyzną prywatną”. Monografia Wolffa jest wielostronną, interdyscyplinarną syntezą z pogranicza historii politycznej i historii kultury, imponującą wymiarami obszarów badawczych uwzględnionych przez autora.
The study provides a comprehensive overview of Larry Wolff’s monograph "The Idea of Galicia. History and Fantasy in Habsburg Political Culture" (Stanford University Press, Stanford, California 2010, pp. 486). The reviewed publication shows the problem of the formation of Galician awareness in the province of Austro-Hungarian Empire existing for 146 years, which was described as Galicia. The author of the work presents the various stages of the formation of ‘Galicia’s idea’, referring to the Polish, Ukrainian, Jewish and German-Austrian aspects of political, social, economic and cultural history of the region. The author does not evaluate individual narratives, treats them as equivalent cognitively, yet thoroughly discusses both extensive and minor texts on the basis of their thematic link with Galicia. The basic thesis of the book is the belief about the creation of a kind of ‘Galician nation’ that is common for residents of the region of collective multiethnic and multicultural identity based on the pattern of a Galician as a citizen fully identifying himself with his ‘private homeland’. Wolff’s monograph is a multilateral and interdisciplinary synthesis of borderline political history and cultural history, impressive because of its dimensions of research areas covered by the author.

The subject of the article is a discussion of methodology of history of philosophy in Poland. In particular, the value of the inspiring role of the intellectual history in practicing history of philosophy understood as the history of philosophical culture is defended. To do this, on the one hand S. Swieżawski’s theory of philosophical historiography is referred to Swieżawski, following É. Gilson, postulated the idea of philosophically understood history of philosophy in the form of analyses of philosophical problems, significant for practicing philosophy understood systematically. However, on the other hand it has been noticed that in Swieżawski’s theory and research practice elements of history of philosophical culture can be noticed, among others those formulated and practiced by the so-called Warsaw school of historians of the idea. Considering the methodology of history of philosophy in Poland the school pointed to the significance of the history of the Polish philosophical culture. It concentrated not so much on original and influential works in the history of philosophy, as on the abounding philosophical literature. And it is this literature that without claiming epoch-making originality, is often a testimony to a reliable philosophical method; and also it has been an inspiration for the national culture.

The article characterises the achievements and specificities of research into the Polish cultural history of the interwar period. It outlines the difference in exploring cultural history between sociologists and historians. The text is structured into two parts – the introductory first and the main one, presenting the contribution of Polish sociologists to the reflection on the history of culture.

Wenn Rudolf Pannwitz (1881‒1969) Philosophie, Wissenschaft und Kunst als „kentaurische[s] Geschöpf “, d.h. als untrennbar betrachtete, so fragt es sich, wo die Religion in seinem Denken zu verorten ist bzw. wie sie sich in seinem Verständnis zur Philosophie und Kunst verhält. Seine Auffassung über Religion bzw. ihre (mytho)poetische Realisierung werden im Folgenden in Anbetracht einiger seiner Essays und Dichtungen behandelt. Als Dichterphilosoph hat Pannwitz ein komplexes, wenn auch (unverdienterweise) selten behandeltes philosophisches und dichterisches Oeuvre hinterlassen, dessen Korrelationen miteinander bzw. Relationen zu seinem Konzept einer kosmischen Religion im Beitrag nachgegangen werden.
One of the major ideas of the German poet and philosopher Rudolf Pannwitz consists in treating philosophy, science and art as “one creature”, i.e. they should not be treated separately. Thus the questions are raised of where to place religion in Pannwitz’s thinking and how it refers to philosophy and art. His understanding of religion or its mytho-poetic realization have been discussed on the grounds of a few of his essays and poems. As a poet -philosopher Pannwitz left a rarely discussed which has been dealt with in the article. The author has also pointed out how it refers to Pannwitz’s cosmological concept of religion.

Na przestrzeni wieków odzienie – mówiąc najogólniej o wszelkich odmianach ubiorów, strojów czy kostiumów – zyskało wiele funkcji, stając się jednym z najbardziej reprezentatywnych wyznaczników kultury. Ubiory, stroje, kostiumy w całej swojej diachronicznej i synchronicznej złożoności – poza ich ściśle pragmatycznym, utylitarnym wymiarem – pełnią bowiem funkcję swoistych symbolicznych markerów jasno i jednoznacznie określających odgrywaną przez kogoś w danej chwili rolę społeczną, a także odzwierciedlających aprobatę bądź sprzeciw wobec obowiązującej hierarchii wartości i dominujących wzorów kulturowych. Ubranie, a szczególnie strój czy kostium, ujmowane jako integralna całość lub też jako ich poszczególne elementy, mimo swojej materialności są bowiem nasycone tym, co niematerialne wartościami estetycznymi, jak również właśnie znaczeniami symbolicznymi, komunikującymi (bardziej lub mniej bezpośrednio) tożsamość, poglądy, system przynależności do określonego kręgu kulturowego, warstwy społecznej, grupy zawodowej czy subkulturowej. Odzież może bowiem hierarchizować bądź egalitaryzować: wyróżniać kogoś na tle innych lub pozwolić mu się zamaskować, może ujednolicać, zacierać różnice, wskazywać na społeczny prestiż lub poślednią funkcję pełnioną w danej społeczności, ujawniać pragnienia, tęsknoty, marzenia i aspiracje, a także wpisywać się w dyskurs pomiędzy wzorotwórczymi centrami kulturowymi a satelickimi peryferiami z ich kompleksami bądź buntem wobec tego, co nie jest własne i rodzime, czego konsekwencją bywa współcześnie zwrot ku etnicznym źródłom postrzegania siebie i otaczającego świata.
Over the centuries, clothing – generally speaking of all kinds of outfits or costumes – has gained many functions, becoming one of the most representative determinants of culture. Clothes, dresses, costumes in all their diachronic and synchronous complexity – apart from their strictly pragmatic and utilitarian dimension – act as specific symbolic markers clearly and unambiguously defining the social role played by someone at a given moment, as well as reflecting approval or opposition to the existing hierarchy of values and dominant cultural patterns. Clothing, especially costume, understood as an integral whole or as its individual elements, despite their materiality, is saturated with something intangible – aesthetic values in addition symbolic meanings, communicating (more or less directly) identity, views, system of belonging to a specific cultural circle, social stratum, professional or subcultural group. Clothing can hierarchize or egalitarianize: it can distinguish someone from others or allow them to disguise themselves, it can unify, blur differences, indicate social prestige or an inferior function performed in a given community, reveal desires, longings, dreams and aspirations, as well as fit into the discourse between model-creating cultural centers and satellite peripheries with their complexes or rebellion against what is not own and native, which sometimes results in a turn towards ethnic sources of perception of oneself and the surrounding world.

Referring to Rafał Nahirny’s Granice kontroli [Limits of Control], this article discusses the implications of some problems raised in the book. An analysis of Jeremy Bentham’s social projects as well as his personal fears (as indicated in his writings) reveals a crack in the figure of this English philosopher. Bentham presented rational, systematic attempts that were intended to address social risks. To this end, he proposed to establish institutions similar to those operating in England already in the 16th century; however, at the same time he sabotaged their implementation. The emphasis that he put on his panopticon solutions to ensure control reveals the entanglement between the rational need for control and irrational anxiety to have someone that stands guard.

Opis:
Prezentowany artykuł jest rozdziałem przygotowywanej do druku przez Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego książki Kazimierza Brauna „Mój teatr Norwida”. Artykuł zawiera analizę Za kulisami Norwida z punktów widzenia historii kultury, dramatu i teatru. Odwołuje się również do doświadczeń reżyserskich autora, który sztukę tę zrealizował w Teatrze Telewizji w Warszawie (1966) i w Teatrze im. J. Słowackiego w Krakowie (1970).
The article constitutes a chapter from the book “Mój teatr Norwida” (“My theatre of Norwid”) by Kazimierz Braun, prepared for the publication by the University of Rzeszów publishing house. The article contains the analysis of “Behind the scenes” by Norwid from the point of view of the history of culture, drama and theatre. At the same time, the article refers to the author’s experience who – as the director – staged the play at the TV Theatre in Warsaw (in 1966) and at the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre in Cracow (in 1970).
