.В настоящата статия са поставени два основни проблема. Първият е свързан със ситуирането на повествователната стратегия на представяне на османеца в романите "Случаят Джем" и "Последните Шишмановци" в рамките на българския исторически и литературен контекст от 60-те и 70-те години на ХХ век. Образите на мюсюлманите и турците в историческите романи на Вера Мутафчиева не могат да бъдат разглеждани без контекста на възрожденската и фолклорна традиция на представяне на османските турци. В така начертаните аналитични контекстови полета се очертават три важни конфликтогенни теми, чиeто пресъздаване може да послужи като критерий за оценка на полския превод на романа "Случаят Джем" — темата за Изтока и Запада, темата за многоетничността в Османската империя и темата за българските стереотипи за турците, исляма, за епохата на османско управление и за собствената национална идентичност. Вторият засяга полския прочит на горепосочените романи на Мутафчиева, изразен в превода. Анализът на някои значими детайли показва, че в полската езикова версия образът на османските турци не следва акцентите на оригинала и елиминира неговите локални начения, а следователно — нивелира заложените в него ключови за интерпретацията му конфликти и противоречия.
This paper raises two main questions. The first one is how to situate the strategy of representation of Ottoman Turks in historical novels of Vera Mutafchieva "The Djem Affair" and "The Last Shishmans" in the frames of bulgarian historical and literary context of the ‘60s and ‘70s of the 20th century. It is not possibile to describe this strategy without reference to the impact of folklore and nineteenth century tradition of representing the Muslims and Turks. In this context fields three themes that causes conflicts are distinguished and their interpretation in the translation of the novel could be used as a criterium for the translation’s evaluation. These themes are the notion of East and West, the topic of multiethnicity in Ottoman Empire and bulgarian stereotypes of Turks, Islam and national identity. The second question is how the Polish translator interpreted above mentioned historical novels of Mutafchieva. The analysis of some important details shows that the polish translation of "The Djem Affair" do not follow original emphases and thus eliminate some local meanings of the novel, which means that it obliterates some of its key conflicts and contradictions.

Opis:
The article basing on archaeological, architectural and historical researches makes an attempt reconstruct the historical development of Chomutov (north east part of the Czech Republic). The author depicts the developmental history of the town starting from the 13th century colony connected with the court of the gentry, then mentioning the centre of Teutonic Knights Komtur and finally getting to the point when a town was set up nearby the monastic castle. In the middle of the 14th century a process of measuring the streets networks and parcels started. At the beginning of the 15th century Chomutov becomes a fully established city with all its lawful rights, a crest, seal, town hall and fortifications. Wacław IV has winded up the residence of Komtur in 1411 and then the city becomes a private ownership. A family of Veimitilów become the owners of the town and the castle in 1411 and they rearrange the Komtur’s center for the nobility’s residence which becomes the symbol of power over the city. The city starts to fund churches, public buildings and tenancy houses what increases its importance.

The article constitutes an overview of the most important views of Cracow in the Old Polish times. The keynote is the presentation of specific representations (11 views have been discussed) along with the rules of showing the city and – which is the basic thesis – their subjective interpretation in the social and political context. A view beyond the axiomatic principle of the faithfully portrayed urban space usually carried out interpretations which were more or less visualized (both by their creators and recipients). It should be read as a testimony of the epoch, exploring the circumstances of their creation and possible cultural analysis. The first of the discussed representations is the view in the work of Hartman Schedel of 1493; it is not so much the real image of the city as its sign – it corresponds to the views of the city landscape at that time. The second view, from 1537, probably by Mathias Gerung, despite being generally the faithful reflection of the reality, omits many details or distorts them. However, the first representation which faithfully presents the details is the view of 1581; however, it, in turn, deforms the urban space (which, incidentally, was a conscious choice of the creator). Two views in Civitates orbis terrarum by Georg Braun and Franz Hogenberg, published in 1617, are the most informative views presenting Cracow. The latter is the most beautiful picture of the capital city and it also became the source which was later used by the creators of the next panoramas of Cracow, who changed the prototype more or less uncritically (1619, 1696, the second quarter of the 18th century). A breakthrough in the representation of the city, rooted in modern thinking, was the “rationalist” view of 1785. Iconography, like any historical source, is subject to critical review; it should also be – for verification purposes – confronted with other archival sources. In this process, methods from the area of art history, history of architecture, urban planning and historical landscape architecture are applied. There are mutual relations between iconography and written communication; iconography can be the complement, but it can also be the main source, or even the only one.

  The teacher today works in close relationship with others, which forces him to accept a limited set of attitudes and ways of action. I assume for the purposes of this paper two groups of factors for the teacher modeling approach: external – pedagogical supervision and school-imposed regulations deriving from state teachers’ and society’s expectations, especially from parents and students themselves, the internal factors – the process of educating and teaching every teacher and crucial, long-term formation of conscience. Based on this specific quadrangle I will present the first stage of introducing a young man to the world of history at the second stage of compulsory education in Polish schools. The assumption is that a primary school teacher may encourage or discourage the student to continue learning history, both national and global, in the middle school or in the secondary school. This is a great responsibility, which even teachers themselves often forget. W poniższym artykule przedstawiłem wydarzenia prawne i społeczne towarzyszące wprowadzeniu przedmiotu „historia i teraźniejszość” do polskich szkół ponadpodstawowych. Dokonałem oceny pierwszego podręcznika do tego przedmiotu autorstwa prof. Wojciecha Roszkowskiego przez pryzmat techniczno-redaktorski, metodyczny i merytoryczny, odwołując się do warsztatu pracy nauczyciela, któremu tyle uwagi w swoich publikacjach naukowych poświęcił Profesor Józef Półturzycki. Z przeprowadzonej analizy wypływa wniosek: podręcznik ten nigdy nie powinien trafić do uczniów. Jest on napisany językiem piętnującym, wykluczającym, agresywnym i pogardliwym.
The following article presents the legal and social events accompanying the introduction of the subject “History and the Present” to Polish secondary schools. I have evaluated the first textbook for this subject by prof. Wojciech Roszkowski. This evaluation was carried out from the technical and editorial, methodological, and content perspective, referring to the teacher’s workshop, which Professor Józef Półturzycki devoted a lot of attention to in his academic publications. One conclusion emerges from the analysis carried out: this textbook should never reach students. It is written in stigmatizing, excluding, aggressive, and scornful language.

Referring to the seventy years of tradition, the article shows the link between the National Institute of Telecommunications (NIT) and the State Telecommunications Institute established in 1934. What is a Medium?At the beginning the author expresses his opinion that there is a national confusion which nowadays prevails about the nation of medium. His explications, in which he reminds his readers about the indirectness of media communication, are of historical character and expose numerous examples of notional abuse. One of the these states that without defining, in the broadest possible way, the notion of medium, which is a crucial one for media studies, it appears tha any systematic scientific reflection is impossible. As a remedy for the notional confusion, acceptance of the realistic definition of medium which was worked out by Werner Faulstich and based on the theoretical concept of Urlich Saxer („media are systems which solve problems”) is suggested. Therefore, that definition, four dimensions of which define the bases of empirical media studies, means the symbolic „patricide” of the main founder of modern media studies Marshall McLuhan and makes empirical, functional history and theory of the media possible.

Charles-Joseph de Ligne (1735-1814), a Wallon and European Prince, subject of the Austro-Hungary Empire, a heartbreaker of the French Europe, is considered the most famous representative of literary cosmopolitanism. War, love and writing were inseparable in his life. He took part in numerous military campaigns, serving both Austria and Russia, as a Russian colonel, a commander of the order of Maria Theresa, and an Austrian field marshal. He authored various texts related to war; he admired heroism of Charles II, Conde, the tactics of Frederick II, the strategies of Napoleon, Catherine II. The latter was immortalized in de Ligne’s various texts representing different literary genres. The Prince was clearly fascinated by the Empress, and he depicted her in a positive light as an educated person, both agreable and determined. Can we, however, talk about the documentary character of his work ? Instead, the Prince seems to be a documentalist-interpreter.

Opis:
The main aim of the article is an analysis of entomological motifs in the Nałkowska’s wartime diary. The surprising frequency of these motifs gives an opportunity for a more general discussion: the key context for an explanation of insect metaphors seems to be the tendency, common for modernist authors, to place the concept of humanity in a widely understood philosophy of nature. The rule would also apply for the war, or more generally, for mechanisms of human violence, which Nałkowska subjects in her diary to a peculiar darwinistic representation. Understanding the war as a “naturalistic fact” (Hanna Kirchner’s description) results in a gradual blurring of the differences between the violence of nature and the violence of history. The author of the article has identified a similar procedure in Czesław Miłosz’s work, which constitutes a specific counterpoint for Nałkowska’s wartime diary.

This paper is a review of the book by Rémi Brague, titled The Law of God.A Philosophical History of the Alliance, in which he aims to analyze the concept of divine law, assuming „[...] that human activity is based on norms derived from a divine source.” The author analyses this concept historically and philosophically, and thus searches for its historical conditions and reasons for its existence. Focusing mainly on the Middle Ages, he undertakes a critique of modern times and the modern concept of law, according to which it is merely a convention. He stresses that in pre-modern times law was treated as objective, because it was given by God and was closely connected with religion. Such understanding of law was common in all traditions, the history of which the author is following, and it constitutes the very foundation of european culture. In spite of certain differences in interpreting the idea of law, resulting from differences in the doctrines of Judaism, Islam and Christianity, on the grounds of all of them law possesses divine features—as determined and revealed by God, eternal and inherent to the nature of being.

The author proves that the etymology of the surname Przyboś came from the lexicalised adverb przyboś, na przyboś (walk), “to wear shoes on bare feet, with a bare foot, (walk) slightly barefoot”, that came from the adjective przybosy. The surname did not stem from either compound names such as Przybysław, Przybywój or from the verb przybyć, contrary to what has been stated in the historical and etymological dictionary Nazwiska Polaków by Kazimierz Rymut.

Celem artykułu jest ukazanie kluczowego momentu w rozwoju Ignacego Rzeckiego, bohatera Lalki Bolesława Prusa. Autor, przypominając młodzieńcze lata bohatera, zwraca uwagę na jego udział w kampanii węgierskiej roku 1848 i znaczenie tego momentu, który ukazał młodemu subiektowi przepaść miedzy ideałem a rzeczywistością i dał Rzeckiemu umiejętność trafnego osądu późniejszych wydarzeń. Doświadczenie wojenne uczyniło z niego wprawnego uczestnika warszawskiego zgiełku późnych lat siedemdziesiątych i porte parole autora, gdyż obaj, będąc po swojemu artystami, starają się skierować uwagę innych ludzi na interesujące ich rzeczy i sprawy.
The article aims at presenting a pivotal moment in shaping of the identity of Ignacy Rzecki, one of the main characters of Bolesław Prus’s Lalka (The Doll). In reference to the character’s background the author of the article proves that the participation in the Hungarian campaign of the year 1848 showed the difference between the ideal and the reality and gave Rzecki an important ability of correctly judging subsequent events. His war experience makes him a skilful participant of Warsaw life in the late seventies and a porte parole to the author, both of whom being artists who aim at directing other people’s attention onto issues and aspect of their interest.

The Museum of Krakow, until recently the Historical Museum of the City of Krakow, ranks among the largest Polish museums, not only within the group of municipal museums. It boasts an exceptionally developed infrastructure and a high number of thematic branches, as well as multifaceted operations. The analysed monograph, authored by the Museum’s current Director, presents a long and tedious, albeit systematic process of the Museum’s development over the period of more than a hundred years within the context of numerous external conditionings, with the emphasis on the Museum’s role and importance for the city community and for its culture. Underlining the obvious advantages of the book and its sizeable factual value, as well as balanced opinions, the reviewer, however, observes its certain defaults and deficiencies, while also formulating a number of more general views going beyond the very matter of the book-related review. The extensive publication in question certainly encourages such an approach, this unquestionably adding another to its merits.

Książka Marcina Marona Romantyzm i kino. Idee i wyobrażenia romantyczne w filmach polskich reżyserów z lat 1947-1990 (2019) prezentuje interpretacje jedenastu filmów, których fabuła dotyczy wydarzeń rozgrywających się między rokiem 1789 a 1849; niektóre z nich są ekranizacjami literatury romantycznej . Wyznacznikami romantyzmu okazują się tu poglądy filozoficzne, głównie kręgu jenajskiego, oraz zjawiska historyczne kształtujące ich przyswojenie i aktywizację. Filmy zostały omówione na tle przedstawionej w ostatniej części pracy recepcji romantyzmu w czasach PRL. Książka Marona, nieco statyczna w ścisłym przestrzeganiu ograniczeń chronologicznych i kompozycyjnych, dynamizuje się jednak w lekturze, prowokując do pytań wykraczających zarówno poza ramy czasowe przyjęte przez autora, jak i wyznaczony tu krąg problemów.
Marcin Maron’s book Romantyzm i kino. Idee i wyobrażenia romantyczne w filmach polskich reżyserów z lat 1947-1990 [Romanticism and Cinema: Romantic Ideas and Images in the Films of Polish Directors from 1947-1990] (2019) presents interpretations of eleven films that either depict events taking place between 1789 and 1849 or are adaptations of romantic literature. The notion of romanticism employed in the book is determined by philosophical views, mainly those of the Jena circle, and historical phenomena that support their realization. In the concluding part of the work, the films are discussed in the context of the reception of romanticism in the times of the Polish People’s Republic. Maron’s book, though somewhat static in its strict compliance with chronological and compositional restrictions, nevertheless makes for a dynamic reading experience, as it provokes questions that reach beyond both the time frame adopted by the author and his chosen range of problems.

The aim of this article is to show the methodological principles that govern the interrelationship of the main ideas, concepts, and theories of modern biology. In recent years, several prominent biological researchers attempted to offer insights into the development of biological knowledge. However, a critical examination of these attempts indicates that a methodological analysis is a more fitting approach for achieving this goal. Indeed, the challenge of establishing inter-theoretical connections between biological theories and discoveries falls not within the purview of biology itself but rather within the methodology of biology. This paper explores the key research findings that determine the vertical order of biological knowledge, thereby deepening our cognitive understanding of this field. It also explores the theoretical advancements that expand the horizontal scope of this knowledge. The conceptual framework is illustrated through two diagrams Map I and Map II, which illustrate the methodological structure of biological ideas, concepts, and theories from the era of Linnaeus to the early 21st century. Map II further demonstrates how complex explanatory narratives can be constructed based on contemporary biological and evolutionary knowledge.

Examining the historical development of scientific concepts is important for understanding the structured routines within which these concepts are currently used as goal-directed tools in experiments. To illustrate this, I outline how the concepts of mental imagery and hallucinations each draw on an older interdependent set of associations that, although nominally discarded, continues to structure their current independent uses for pursuing discrete experimental goals. In doing so, I highlight how three strands of literature offer mutually instructive insights into how the uses of current scientific concepts contribute to experimental practices. The first strand of literature includes recent scholarship examining how the uses of scientific concepts can enable scientific practices (e.g., Boon 2012, Brigandt 2012, Feest 2010, Steinle 2012), the second strand comes from the technoscientific studies focused on non-human agency (Pickering 1995), and the third draws attention to how the functions of concepts are grounded by the set of historically contingent experimental practices (e.g., Canguilhem 2008, Tiles 1984).

Actually, Christopher Columbus, the discoverer of the New World and the godfather of American Indians (Native Americans), never set foot on the territory of the contemporary United States. However, since 1937, Americans have been celebrating the federal holiday named Columbus Day. From the 1960s, commemoration of October 12 has been subject to gradually increasing criticism by ancestors of Native Americans. On the 500th anniversary of the discovery of the New World the counterproposal was presented to commemorate this day as the Indigenous Peoples’ Day. In the 21st century, Columbus has become for many the symbol of extermination performed by white colonizers in the New World during the Age of Discovery. His monuments were stained with red paint as a symbol of blood shed by colonizers. According to some opinion poll from 2017, the US society is divided almost in half on which of these two holidays should be commemorated. The purpose of this paper is to present the changes regarding the image of Columbus and the history of colonialism by comparing scientific and educational perspectives in Italy and Poland in the 21st century.
Krzysztof Kolumb, odkrywca Nowego Świata i ojciec chrzestny amerykańskich Indian, nigdy nie postawił stopy na terytorium współczesnych Stanów Zjednoczonych, jednak od 1937 roku Amerykanie obchodzą federalne święto o nazwie Dzień Kolumba. Od lat 60. XX wieku upamiętnienie 12 października jest przedmiotem coraz większej krytyki ze strony potomków amerykańskich Indian. W 500. rocznicę odkrycia Nowego Świata przedstawiono kontrpropozycję upamiętniającą ten dzień jako Dzień Ludów Rdzennych. W XXI wieku Kolumb stał się dla wielu symbolem eksterminacji dokonywanej przez białych kolonizatorów w Nowym Świecie w Wieku Odkrywców. Jego pomniki są oblewane czerwoną farbą, będącą symbolem krwi przelanej przez kolonizatorów. Według niektórych sondaży z 2017 roku społeczeństwo amerykańskie jest podzielone niemalże pół na pół co do tego, które z tych dwóch świąt należy upamiętnić. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie zmian dotyczących wizerunku Kolumba oraz dziejów kolonializmu poprzez porównanie perspektywy naukowej i edukacyjnej we Włoszech i w Polsce w XXI wieku.

The article is a presentation of the research carried on history and nationalism in Polish school education. Researchers have analyzed school textbooks and curricula, as well as conducted interviews with teachers and students. The work is a critical anthropological and cultural studies voice in the discussion on historical education in Polish schools.

This essay reminds us of the correspondence between Piotr Skarga and Jerome Nadal. The author discusses all seven letters of their written dialogue. T hey exchanged not so many letters and we cannot tell enough about Nadal’s personality and his relationship with a well-known Polish preacher, but their correspondence is really interesting as a unique source of knowledge about the early Society of Jesus, history of the Catholic Church and customs in old Poland, which are described from the point of view of Jesuits.

The paper deals with renewal of socialist art history in the Post-Stalinist period in Soviet Union. The modernisation of art history is discussed based on the example of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic (Estonian SSR), where art historians were forced to accept the Soviets’ centrally constructed Marxist-Leninist aesthetic and approach to art and art history. In the art context, the idea of progressiveness began to be reconsidered. In previous discourse, progress was linked with the “realist” artistic method that sprang from a progressive social order. Now, however, art historians found new arguments for accepting different cultures of form, both historical and contemporary, and often these arguments were “discovered” in Marxism itself. As a result, from the middle of 1950’s Soviet art historians fell into two camps in interpreting Realism: the dogmatic and revisionist, and the latter was embraced in Estonia. In 1967, a work was published by the accomplished artist Ott Kangilaski and his nephew, the art historian Jaak Kangilaski: the Kunsti kukeaabits – Basic Art Primer – subtitled “Fundamental Knowledge of Art and Art History.” In its 200 pages, Jaak Kangilaski’s Primer laid out the art history of the world. Kangilaski also chimed in, publishing an article in 1965 entitled “Disputes in Marxist Aesthetics” in the leading Estonian SSR literary journal Looming (Creation). In this paper the Art Primer is under scrutiny and the deviations and shifts in Kangilaski’s approach from the existing socialist art history canon are introduced. For Kangilaski the defining element of art was not the economic base but the “Zeitgeist,” the spirit of the era, which, as he wrote, “does not mean anything mysterious or supernatural but is simply the sum of the social views that objectively existed and exist in each phase of the development of humankind.” Thus, he openly united the “hostile classes” of the social formations and laid a foundation for the rise of common art characteristics, denoted by the term “style.” As is evidenced by various passages in the text, art transforms pursuant to the “will-to-art” (Kunstwollen) characteristic of the entire human society. Thus, under conditions of a fragile discursive pluralism in Soviet Union, quite symbolic concepts and values from formalist Western art history were “smuggled in”: concepts and values that the professional reader certainly recognised, although no names of “bourgeois” authors were mentioned. Kangilaski relied on assistance in interpretation from two grand masters of the Vienna school of art history: Alois Riegl’s term Kunstwollen and the Zeitgeist concept from Max Dvořák (Zeitgeist, Geistesgeschichte). In particular, the declaration of art’s linear, teleological “self-development” can be considered to be inspiration from the two. But Kangilaski’s reading list obviously also included Principles of Art History by Heinrich Wölfflin, who was declared an exemplary formalist art historian in earlier official Soviet historiography. Thaw-era discursive cocktail in art historiography sometimes led Kangilaski to logical contradictions. In spite of it, the Primer was an attempt to modernise the Stalinist approach to art history. In the Primer, the litmus test of the engagement with change was the new narrative of 20th century art history and the illustrative material that depicted “formalist bourgeois” artworks; 150 of the 279 plates are reproductions of Modernist avant-garde works from the early 20th century on. Put into the wider context, one can claim that art history writing in the Estonian SSR was deeply engaged with the ambivalent aims of Late Socialist Soviet politics, politics that was feared and despised but that, beginning in the late 1950s, nevertheless had shown the desire to move on and change.
